Stein: D-Will a "Lock" For London

Photo

Marc Stein tries his hand at paring the Team USA training camp invite list down to an Olympic roster and thinks Deron Williams is a lock for one of the final 12 who will take to the London Basketball Arena court to defend their country's gold medal.

Stein believes that nine spots are a given: They are Chris Paul, Derrick Rose and Williams at point guard; Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade at shooting guard; Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and LeBron James at forward; Dwight Howard at center. Of course, that could change. Players could get injured or have personal crises.

Rounding out the roster, thinks Stein, will be Blake Griffin, Chris Bosh and Kevin Love, with Tyson Chandler and LaMarcus Aldridge ready to fill in if any of the bigs can't make the trip.

Then why is DWill 5th among Eastern Conference guards for All Star game?

The fans are obviously uninformed and don’t like his team.

DWill might have a better disposition if he makes the Olympics as well as the All Star game.

by jerry25 on Jan 20, 2012 7:01 PM EST reply actions

everyone knew this was going to happen.

Deron never was voted by the fans while being in the west. He is now in the east. Wade and Rose are more popular.

How about the Nets suck, are relatively unpopular, and D-Will is having a down year so far.

it's not a conspiracy theory

facts are facts… Wade and Rose are more popular

because he isn't one of the top 2 guards in the conference

it’s pretty simple, not everything is because people “hate” the nets.

He hasn't played like on either

There are probably 4 Guards that have played better than him PLUS his team.

Is it true that Westbrook can no longer be traded before March 15 because of his extension?

I think they are missing shooters...

The other teams will just clog up the paint when they play against the US.

In contrast to the negative news from Broussard about DWill eyeing other teams (which I don't believe) ....

Ric Bucher today re-affirmed DH’s preference to go to Nets in an ESPN Internet chat:

Brian (SLC):
Why wouldn’t the Clips trade Blake for Dwight? Perfect time to sell high on a guy with serious defensive limitations and a chance to pair CP3 with the second best player in the game as both are in the middle of their primes.

Ric Bucher
(1:14 PM)
Clippers realize that Dwight is a better player right now. But Blake is on his rookie contract and the bang for the buck simply isn’t close. Bottom line is, DH isn’t coming to the Clips. They explored that last summer and while if there was a fourth team on his list they’d probably be it, they are not in the same place in his thinking as the Nets, Mavs and Lakers. In that order.

http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/42180/nba-with-ric-bucher

In a separate Email, Bucher maintains that Bynum wouldn’t be enough to get Howard and that Dallas doesn’t have enough to trade.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 20, 2012 7:20 PM EST reply actions

My 12 are:

- Paul; DWill; Rose;
- Kobe; Wade;
- LeBron; Melo; Durant;
- Aldridge; Griffin;
- Howard; Love;

Bosh has been in US team for a while, he deserves to be there too, but Griffin has more hype around him, and that means more hype around team USA, and there’s no better place than the Olympics, to show to the world all the talent you have in your country.

2012 Lineup: D-Will - Brooks - AK47 - Lopez - D12... Book it!

by Heavinsent on Jan 20, 2012 7:24 PM EST reply actions

team usa isn't about hype or superstar visibility

It’s about team play and being willing to sacrifice what you’re used to doing as a star. That’s why Iguodala was successful, why Bosh will be successful, and why Griffin is probably a bad fit. He’s pretty immature, I don’t see him giving up his “lob city” status in order to do what’s best for the team

by sheepareevil on Jan 20, 2012 7:59 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Like I said to 3ptChucker...

I don’t think Griffin or other PF will have space to play much time, because Melo and Durant will spend much time in there, but it would be funny just to play some minutes and make some monster dunks in the biggest stage, and show off to the world.
But agree Bosh deserves it more.

Paul – Deron
Kobe – Wade

Durant – Melo
Dwight – Bosh

can you blame

him?? They assume the Magic will go after the better player to replace their star.

Bynum will be an all star and playing great

LAL probably doesn't get Howard

If they don’t offer Bynum + Gasol.

by djeterfan on Jan 20, 2012 8:06 PM EST via Android app up reply actions

They also don't get him if he's hesitant about resigning

In the offseason before I said it was a lock he would resign with LA not so sure anymore.

still on his list of teams he would resign with if he was traded

that being said the list is for the Magic to find a suitable trade partner and work something out.

by outkast on Jan 20, 2012 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

I know but my point is whatever team he goes to hes not going to resign until the offseason

If LA feels he is hesitant becasue of whatever reason they would be hesitant to give up a Bynum and especially not Gasol as well.

I don't think it will just take bynum and gasol

the way Bynum is playing he will be an all star. So the Lakers could put together a package with a third team and really don’t have to worry about losing too much.

still Lakers are holding the cards right now

It makes the good times that much more worth it. I haven’t been a Nets fan for as long as some others (only since 1995) but man, that 6 year wait for the Nets to be great paid off big time. I’m patiently biding my time for the next great era in Nets basketball.

As much as were worried about D12

We know he would resign with the Nets, but has anybody heard concretely he would resign with the Lakers? Taking the Lakers cache out of it of course? The more I hear its looking more uncertain especially about that Shaq thing wanting to create his own legacy. D12 talking to Kobe on the phone and feeling turnt off, after already calling him old.

The point of having a superstar core

is to attract 3 things
1) fans
2) sponsors
3) free agents

Look at Miami. Guys will want to play with A) an elite PG and B) by far the best center in the league, especially if it’s in a brand new arena in the greatest city in the world.

I think it's fine.

Fourth in the NBA right now.

Average of 20k a night. We are averaging 15k right now. Call me crazy, but moving this team to a city with a population of 2.5 million with 2 superstars, there should not be attendance problems.

I think it's fine.

Melo is capable of performing to the expectations of the big city and bright lights.

The problem is he’s known for his unexpected level of motivation. We’ve already seen two or three MAJOR slumps for the Knicks since his arrival. Granted, they are still in the early stages of their super team, but this is why I am so grateful that we ended up with a better player at a lower price.

I thank the good Lord for making Deron Williams a Net.

by Heavinsent on Jan 20, 2012 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

If you didn't see a drastic difference in the team's play after the Deron trade last year, I don't know what to tell you.

He was playing with both wrists injured. Along with that, it’s tough for a playmaker to come onto a new team and be totally effect. And STILL, he had several brilliant games. He had 47 assists in his first three games with us, which was a record for assists in the first three games with a new team. Even with off-shooting, he was great. Do you really call that awful?

This season, there’s no question he’s been in a slump, but his struggles have been blown out of proportion. He tore it up against Golden State and Phoenix. And let’s not forget, without Brook, this team’s depth is very limited.

by TWilliAM on Jan 20, 2012 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

he's better at SF, he's a good defender and can make the 3.

But that’s not a problem, they are very young and even if they don’t sign anyone in the next years they will make the playoffs soon, they will get better and better every year they have so much talent, but if they don’t add some D to their game they will never pass the 1st round of the playoffs. I think C is abigger problem than SG

by Heavinsent on Jan 20, 2012 11:11 PM EST up reply actions

That's not how it works

And even if we ignore his rebounding, It’s not like he’s shot particularly well (especially as a SF, where the standard is higher). He almost never gets to the line because his handle is so weak and he can’t to the basket.

He’s a bust. if he’s even in the league in a few years, he’ll be coming off the bench.

Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!

by TWilliAM on Jan 20, 2012 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, I didn't said he's a star or starter, but his defense and 3pt shot makes him a decent player.

he’s going to get better than this, he’s playing worst than his rookie year, give some time.

But forgeting Wes, the Wolves are the team with most young talent in the league, and now that they seem finally setting their team, Khan will stop stockpiling talent and may be starting to trade some of the many young players they have. I like a lot Anthony Tolliver, great defender, can play the SF and PF and make the 3, he would be a great addition for our Super Team. Fo me a guy that defends well and can shoot the 3 is an excellent role player, even more with the size Tolliver has.

i must be in the minority of...

…one.

I don’t buy into the Nets will trade DWill if Dwight doesn’t come. Let me point out:

- DWill for as much as he wants to win; he also loves him some green cash; the only superstar to go overseas for money; he’ll also be the one who says “wait, who said I was leaving the Nets cuz of Dwight being dealt somewhere else? was it Ham-berger again? Or maybe Knicks fans disguised as ESPN reporters?”

- DWill has never had a backcourt mate with the potential of Brooks. Nor has he or any other NBA player in the past 36 years been part of a team re-branding itself and going into a brand spankin new arena in NY; a team that will soon have the pressure of building a winner in NYC, and actually having the assets to do so quickly.

- Everyone seems to think they know what’s going on inside DWill’s head, including us fans. But if anything, from what we’re learning and from what he’s shown going back to the infamous “ham-berger” incident all the way to the present — whenever we’ve seen the frustration on the court or sitting on the bench, is that we all end up being wrong cuz he’s come up big in the few games we have won and he sure looks like he’s happy being here after those wins.

Anyway…I just can’t allow myself to only look at the glass half empty version of what could happen should D12 end up anywhere but NJ/BKLN without also being fair and looking at the glass half full version of that scenario.

let us understand ESPN

espnny got a lot of hits earlier in the week cuz of the Giants. Towards the end of the week, and as the Knicks faltered…the site lost some traction — now with the Broussard article, the site is getting hits again.

There are sponsors the site needs to keep happy. The only articles we should pay attention to are the ones that are headlined with “Nets trade pending….details coming soon!”

Its not only ESPN

even this site is getting dull to me with the losing, many fans thoughts I disagree with, and the Howard watch. ESPN only post 100% confirmed stuff as well, and not get there sources from google search like this site.

Dwill from what we seen

doesn’t look like a patient man. He will not buy into promises of BK

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 12:17 AM EST up reply actions

Dwill will leave if Dwight isn't a Net

1. Deron has said himself he doesn’t care about big market this or that he wants to win. If this season has shown us anything Deron does not handle losing very well. He has no interest in a rebuilding product.

2. Deron said himself that he could make up what he loses in endorsements.

3. This is about Deron being happy. He is not going to be happy if the Nets are rebuilding. He would rather go back to Dallas. He knows Cuban history and admires him. Cuban has proven he is willing to go all out to ensure that his team competes. Plus teaming up with a hall of player like Dirk is better than Lopez.

4. Deron has said himself he wants to play for whatever team gives him the best chance to win a ring. He personally feels the Nets bets chance to win a ring is Dwight.

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 12:16 AM EST up reply actions

he has many reasons to go to dallas

it goes from playing in your home state, playing along side a hall of fame player, having a hands on owner who is dedicated to winning and has proven he can build a championship team and so on

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 12:22 AM EST up reply actions

I don't see him

staying with a team that doesn’t have Dwight just to get a 5th year either. If his actions have shown you anything this guy does not tolerate losing well

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

So Dwight is the only way to make this a winning team?

With our cap space, a healthy Brook, Brooks in his second year and a pick in the lottery why is Dwight the only way we can become a good team going into
BK?

he did in order to get Deron. That nearly similar to the Nets who assemble their team to be in play for Dwight if he wasn’t traded

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

but Nets will have a better chance to being a winner

without D12.

Lopez, Hump, Brooks, draft picks, capspace DWill >>>>> Dirk/Dwill

by Versifiervt on Jan 21, 2012 12:24 AM EST up reply actions

no they won't

that team still loses in the first round. If that is the case Dwill would have given Billy the go ahead for Nene and others.

Dallas will be able to lure free agents. Nets have yet to prove they can

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

oh boy

so DWill would rather give up 30 million and lose in the first round with Dirk.

by Versifiervt on Jan 21, 2012 12:27 AM EST up reply actions

who knows

one thing for sure. Looks like he would rather leave than being on an 8 seed team at best.

again that line up you name is nothing special.

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

the point is

that lineup includes the chance of drafting a good player and the capspace to sign an additional player. Put all that together and you have the potential of something special.

Whereas in Dallas, DWill gives up money to go there. Dallas uses capspace to get him. They have no assets to get anyone else.

by Versifiervt on Jan 21, 2012 12:33 AM EST up reply actions

the point is you are still talking about building

if what you say was all it would take to get Deron to commit the Nets could have settle for Nene because it is not a sure thing they will get Dwight.

If all it took was an okay team to get Deron to commit the Nets could have sign nene and made other moves but obliviously it takes more than that

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

so true i think the team’s objective is to get a ring not just settle for first round exits

by avilanets85 on Jan 21, 2012 12:44 AM EST up reply actions

so what dallas would be doing next year is not rebuilding?

how so? Tell me the clear advantage they have that makes them instant championship contenders? And consider the fact that two of the big FAs in the offseason is going to be signed — Love and Westbrook.

Dallas would have to “build around” dirk and DWill.

So if both teams are starting from scratch but one team only has dirk and some cap space and the Nets already have good young talent and more assets to get even better players…which team do you pick to build with?

by Versifiervt on Jan 21, 2012 12:46 AM EST up reply actions

they already have an hall of fame player

who said they would be instant contenders.

The thing is that Dallas would be better for Deron than a rebuilding team still trying to make the playoffs and convince free agents to sign.

Again Dallas doesn’t have that problem. Dallas chose to go this route in order to get Deron.

I seen what Cuban can do. I seen Rick coach his squad to the promise land. Dallas has accomplish goals that the Nets are trying to.

Both teams are not starting for scratch. One will have a hall of fame player. The other will have a Brook Lopez

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 12:49 AM EST up reply actions

WOW.

Do you do Dirk’s errands too? Dirk will be a HOF in the twilight of his career….LMAO.

How old do you think Dirk is? 27? LMAO. If DWill wanted commit the next 5 years of his life to the high potential that dirk has maybe 2 good years left, then he would’ve just told King to sign Nene, Caron, Chandler.

I don’t think you understand that Dallas wouldn’t be in any better position to build a championship.

You say you saw Dallas build a championship, then you’ll know that Cuban did it with trial and error for the past decade before getting it right. And when he finally did get it right, he blew it up in hopes to get DWill to agree to commit another trial and error blue print.

by Versifiervt on Jan 21, 2012 12:53 AM EST up reply actions

and by the way

i don’t know what super stars you refer to when you say Dallas can attract super stars. Last i checked, they were always overpaying better than average role players.

So even in that sense…I don’t see Dallas enticing Dwill.

by Versifiervt on Jan 21, 2012 12:58 AM EST up reply actions

i agree with outkast on the part that dallas would intrigue deron and dwight beacuse of dirk and that championship last year. i do agree with versifiervt also on the point that cuban did do it with trial and error it’s not he built a dynasty like the spurs or lakers so it’s guaranteed that they’ll get one real soon. not hating on the mavs i applaud them for their championship but at the same time with cuban aka the big money spender they did take awhile to win that first chip

by avilanets85 on Jan 21, 2012 1:03 AM EST up reply actions

You not making sense

1. this is your point. Deron will stay because of the potential of being on a team with Brook Lopez hump Brooks and a draft pick.

Are you serious? are you for real?? come on stop it.

You are not making sense. You are coming off as a homer.

Again if your logic was correct. If that was all it took to keep Deron why didn’t the Nets sign Nene on day one??

I mean trading for Dwight they would have to take on bad contracts like Hedo and Chris Duhon while giving up assets as well.

See that doesn’t make much sense does it. Deron said himself he has been on playoff teams. The team he signs with will be the team he feels will help him accomplish his goal. The line up you just name was an 8 seed team at best.

So I will say this again if all it took was an 8 seed team to get Deron to commit why are the Nets in the situation they are in right now. Why are they going all out for Dwight?

Having their star player struggle and grow upset after each loss?

because Billy King knows an 8 seed team is not enough. If Utah felt that Deron was going to walk away from them when they were a playoff team what makes you think he won’t from a lottery team like the Nets.

again your argument is lacking logic.

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 1:03 AM EST up reply actions

last thing I'll say

Dirk and DWill may not even be an 8th seed in the west and Dallas would face some major challenges in building around those two.

You’re clearly low selling Brooks, Lopez, Hump, draft picks, and Nets capspace.

It’s not homerism. It’s a near 40 year old dirk vs. a team with youth and a center who’s still might be one of the better centers in the league.

by Versifiervt on Jan 21, 2012 1:06 AM EST up reply actions

again I will say

this if that is all it would take to sign Deron why are the Nets in the situation they are in now??

See it makes no sense.

If Deron told King. I would like Dwight but hey I will stay if the team was okay. I really want that 5 year.

lets see billy could go through the same BS he did with Melo or he could sign Nene and other solid players and ensure the Nets have a good roster on the court

by outkast on Jan 21, 2012 1:11 AM EST up reply actions

oops...wasn't the last thing...lol...

…if you’re going assume Dallas can “build around DWill and Dirk”, then it’s only fair for me to assume that King will be able to put the right pieces around DWill and a squad that’s really only just one to two pieces away from being legit.

Dallas would have to find more than just a few pieces to build around Dirk and Dwill. Nets would already have a SG, a Center, a PF as well as the assets to get at least one more really good player.

Now i’m done. I don’t know how i can make it any clearer to you. It’s late. This was fun. Won’t matter whether either of us are right cuz Dirk, DWill, Blo or Marshon don’t pay our bills. LOL. laterz.

by Versifiervt on Jan 21, 2012 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

Oh...and Dallas won't be luring nobody...

…without capspace which they’ll ultimately lose with signing DWiill.

And the Nets passed on Nene for the chance to get Dwight.

speak for yourself

I ALWAYS liked Collins. he always played hard despite his obvious offensive shortcomings, never complained, took tough contact (not all were flops, he wasn’t Varejao), and was generally really reliable. we certainly could have done better at the center position, but I admire a guy to stick it out in this league with little athletic ability and mostly hard work.

I didn't say he was an ideal starting center

but we certainly could have done worse. at least the guy knew his place on the floor and didn’t try anything he couldn’t do (the exception of a few “set shot willie” games) like Johan Petro. just because he was put in a position he didn’t belong doesn’t mean I should hate the guy.

It’s the same with Graham, honestly. he worked hard to get onto an NBA roster, we shouldn’t hate him because the Nets had terrible depth, injury and incompetence at the wing position, forcing him to play heavy minutes for us. he was obviously out of place, and I didn’t want him playing, but I don’t hate him for being thrust into a role he doesn’t fit into.

Blake Griffin's offensive strategy

option 1: call for lob
-if successful, instant sportscenter highlight
-if unsuccessful, whine to ref

option 2: get ball in post and dribble off foot

option 3: push someone in the back for an offensive rebound and dunk, don’t worry they won’t call it

by sheepareevil on Jan 21, 2012 12:30 AM EST reply actions

I'm really starting to dislike Blake griffin

I felt like this guy basically threw himself on the floor hard earlier when love barely touched him.
Then later the man acted like Ridnour killed him and almost bit the ball complaining to the refs.
He’s worse than wade smh, he’s still a great basketball player though juss a drama queen

i don’t believe he’s just a dunker but at the same time i think he’s just playing off his athletic ability and should focus on building a more complete game because dude has potential

by avilanets85 on Jan 21, 2012 12:46 AM EST up reply actions

the worst was when he tried to start a beef with Shelden Williams

who did nothing more than force a tie up off an offensive board. Blake had to make it personal and trash talk, like dude wtf? are you that insecure?

by sheepareevil on Jan 21, 2012 12:41 AM EST up reply actions

trash talk is "personal"?

are these the same fans that watched kenyon martin headbutt people for no good reason here (and loved it)?

by shane gayle on Jan 21, 2012 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

no trash talk isn't necessarily personal

but in that case it seemed so forced and out of place, like I can’t imagine Shelden did anything to push someone to talk smack to him. and looking at the replay, all he did was tie up Griffin after the shot, but Blake had to flop and talk moiso as he was getting up. whatever dude, gotta prove how alpha you are, get over yourself, it’s Shelden Williams.

Couple things worth noting with the Barclays Center design:

http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/394103_345569025461968_299028480116023_1349937_1387044019_n.jpg

1) Genius move by the Nets to make it so that there won’t be any distractions behind the basket for the Nets when shooting free throws in the second half (particularly down the stretch).

2) The tightness of the bowl and the proximity of the fans to the court is awesome! I’m hoping it will be loud in there.

by OTRWaldo on Jan 21, 2012 12:42 AM EST reply actions

wow refs just screwed GS

Monte Ellis had a chance to win at the end, George Hill cleary kicked the ball, refs didn’t see, and Hill got a 3 point play to win it.

My only thing with OKC is that article I read which had Stern quotes about how OKC would not be able to hold onto their core because of the financial obligations each guy would command. And then Westbrook signs a max contract. They will have to give Harden and Ibaka decent sized contracts in the coming years.

Dude is a loser that makes his team worse.

god sportscenter is the worst

first they have that awfully suggesting story about “will Kevin Love leave Minnesota?!”, even though it’s extremely unlucky. then they just had a brief blurb about Deron, claiming he WILL leave New Jersey if the Nets don’t get Dwight.

Look, we all know it’s likely he won’t stay if he don’t get Dwight, but to declare at a uncertainty because of “sources” is just bad journalism, and misleading. Sportscenter is so key to creating perceptions, it’s not surprising everyone thinks we’re a joke when ESPN already assumes Deron is gone.

I was thinking of the worst case scenario for us and I think I found one worse than Deron leaving us after we fail to get Dwight

We lose out on Dwight, Deron leaves, the lottery balls are extremely unkind to us, and Brook pulls a Lamar Odom and is so hurt by our attempts to trade him that he requests a trade too.
