Power Rankings: Nets Down Again

It's been a while since the Nets rose above #20 in the Power Rankings, maybe in early 2008-09 when Devin Harris and Vince Carter were dropping 30 points on alternate nights. Not since. Not that we can recall. And with fans fearing the worst (12-70 worst) and Deron Williams unable to sleep, it's hard to be optimistic.

That pessimism is reflected in the first full power rankings of the season. John Schuhmann ranks the Nets at 28th. He offers that "Williams' supporting cast is pretty awful without Brook Lopez and that the Nets' schedule is toughest early". Marc Stein goes worst case scenario noting that if things get worse, Deron Williams could leave, "So, yeah, it's panic time already".

Obviously we could argue over this, but I think the Nets right now are probably one of the worst teams in the NBA to root for…

Outside of Toronto, Cleveland, Detroit, Charlotte, Washington, Phoenix I think it would be more fun to be a fan of any other team

VC was a leader

He was 32 and still had a young and not so good team fighting for a playoff spot. He made Devin an AllStar that year.

and somehow the roster got even worse than that

Boone, Swat, Simmons, Hayes, Yi, Hassel, Dooling, RA, CD-R, Brook at that stages in their career with Harris and VC would crush any nets lineup after that season up to current day

Great my moiso
He couldn’t run the pick and roll

Never got Brook the ball in the 3rd Q

by mytoemytoe on Jan 2, 2012 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

No

VC was never selfish. Dude was the greatest scorer to play the game! Bron and James were gifted to play basketball , Kobe and Jordan worked at their craft and took it serious.

When I say Vince was the greatest scorer, I mean that he could not be stopped and could brake Wilts record if he felt to. Vince was just always too damn nice. Stilly most favorite to play the game and that’s saying a lot , cause he was a punk/nice.

I think we’ve collectively reached the next stage of Nets Fandoom: acceptance. We had our annual episode of hope (D12 coming!), next denial (we can possibly make playoffs with this roster!), and now acceptance (yup, we stink!).

If we play the same lineups as yesterday we won't beat the Wizards

At one point it was shelden will, hump, DJ/Stevenson, Morrow, Gaines.

The thing that pisses me off the most is that he had the audacity to say that we can't keep

Avery is so much smarter than everyone of us, players, coaches, gms, scouts, etc……he is the only one that knew the potential of outlaw, djames as a starter, brooks as a benchwarmer, dwill as a 2 guard and most importantly sundiata gaines as a starting pg!!!!

He’s brilliant!!!!!!!!

Gaines is a 3rd pg on any other team

Go back to standard lineup of Dwill/Farmar/Gaines
Gaines takes way too much dribbles to get into rhythm its killing our offense.
Wdf is Avery doing

by T o n y on Jan 2, 2012 2:56 PM EST reply actions

We could use Farmar's offense and shooting

why this guy is playing Deron Williams as the 2 guard makes NO SENSE.

Its like having a 2 guard who doesnt want to score, because Deron 100% does NOT want to score, he is constantly passing to teammates who either cant score or are in a bad position to score.

He is trying to distribute too much, essentially saying — hey, look, I have no one to help me, get me some help or Im gone.

Maybe your right but..

Avery has been playing with rotations since he got here, it’s cool when a player like Graham gives you a spark to get in the game but starting caliber players have to finish. Clowns like Petro , Sheldon a and Outlaw should never finish because they played well all game . Those players will allway find a way to lose.

If Avery continues with his line up and rotation follies, we can only expect to lose.

from basketbawful:
Pacers at Nyets, 7:30pm: The Pacers are likewise 3-1, but are shooting 38.5% from the field so far this season. They have not cracked the 40% mark in any of their games so far. Worst in the league.

…And the Nyets are second-worst at 38.7%.

The NBA better burn all video evidence of this game the second the final buzzer sounds.

I like him as the backup 1.

He’s useless off-the-ball on offense, though. And DWill needs to be handling the ball. Which means he should be coming off the bench and probably playing w/ a guy like Morrow, trying to create wide-open shots and playing pesky defense.

LOL...

The only thing I’m not guilty of on that list is #2…and that’s probably due to losing my appetite watching the Nets all these years…

Have you ever noticed that there are few “older” Nets fans…Now you know why.

by M I K E on Jan 2, 2012 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely. Can’t wait to see them as alternates this season on our pathetic good for nothing team. Oh wait, oops.

Avery had to have been saving MarShon for today

when we need him more. Only thing that makes sense

The sad thing is these guys aren’t even a young team. These are mostly veterans from winning programs, playing with no heart here. Again, when all these guys hear that no one is untouchable, everybody thinks this team is temporary, so they don’t put in the all out effort. In the past we stunk because it was a bunch of kids, now we have some proven vets and they’re all out of sorts.

by the Hunk on Jan 2, 2012 5:45 PM EST reply actions

Who are these “vets from winning programs” you are speaking of?
Are they good players?

Or the worst players on great teams?

by mytoemytoe on Jan 2, 2012 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

Basketball is Really Crazy

Watching the lackluster Suns leading the Looking Good Warriors.

On any given day, anybody can beat anybody…………unless the teams is……..

the one with the player who says he cannot sleep.

by Lady in Texas on Jan 2, 2012 5:46 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, there’s so much parity now, the NBA got their wish.. not!

Everyone is expecting great basketball right away but these guys are all still rusty. They had a huge lay-off and then were expected to get back into game shape in a ridiculously short amount of time.

Deron should have been ready to go from his time in Turkey but in reality the two leagues are completely different. The talent over here is so vastly superior to the talent in Turkey that it was outrageous that anybody really expected Deron to be in all star form out of the gate.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 2, 2012 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

He’s looked pretty great at some points, great drives to the hoop hitting difficult lay-ups, but his jumper isn’t falling and he is trying to force the issue on offense because he doesn’t have any weapons.

Hard to build a team like OKC if you’re not lucking into Kevin Durant in the draft.

by mytoemytoe on Jan 2, 2012 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

You mean a team of

Brooks and a Lopez, Favors, Kanter(Maybe Kemba to replace Devin) frontcourt + 2 more picks in this year’s draft? Yeah same

Not the same because no one you listed is any where near the level of Durant.

by BROOK88 on Jan 2, 2012 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

Meh

maybe we’ll get lucky in a draft or so. I thought he was talking about building thro draft and getting young homegrown players

Yea it would be a similar process….just saying it would be hard to match OKC’s success.

by BROOK88 on Jan 2, 2012 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

Oh well yeah

We’d have to either get lucky and draft and amazing player, get the #1 pick, or BK has to get the right player

Interesting comment from Avery. Said they’re playing small backcourt til next time they change lineup in a couple games.

by ItsAllNets on Jan 2, 2012 6:36 PM EST reply actions

Hollinger is a Jersey boy isn’t he? Is he a Nets fan?

by mytoemytoe on Jan 2, 2012 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

Also, I forgot to add, WTF?

by mytoemytoe on Jan 2, 2012 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

not a fan of these lineup changes.

just make a decision and stick to it. and pit.dwill back in his natural position. why are we tanking? why did I get season tickets? why did the lockout end? why will I still be.glued to the screen at 730 when jayz and proky can go 0-82 and ish is still gravy?

by SteViePoPzBK on Jan 2, 2012 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

Had to think about it for a little bit.. I think Avery is trying to say that he’s going to have to change the starters up every now and then to get these guys some extra rest because of the grueling schedule this season.

A lot of teams are probably going to be doing the same thing but only Avery can make it sound so stupid.
