Nets Set To Call Up Larry Owens, Send Down Dennis Horner

Marc Stein reports that the Nets will sign small forward Larry Owens of the Tulsa 66ers to a non-guaranteed contract Wednesday. To make room for Owens, they are expected to waive Dennis Horner from their current roster and return him to the Springfield Armor

Owens, 6'7" and 28 years old, played in 12 games for the Spurs and Wizards last season, hitting six of his 13 3-point attempts. He was cut by the Wizards in training camp this season. Owens was averaging 13.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in 10 games at Tulsa. He was a D-League All-Star and Second-Team All-D-League last season. He's also played overseas in Turkey, Belgium and France.

A Eurobasket profile of him describes Owens this way: "A forward with great leaping ability and quickness, who gives his best at the defensive side and in fast breaks. Needs to improve his technical skills and outside shooting, even a better FT accuracy would help..." Since that was written, Owens has improved his free throw shooting, hitting 94.4% this season, up from 44.4% in the NBA last season.

2010-11's top 10 d-league call ups, Larry Owens number 8
Though Owensโ€™ numbers donโ€™t pop off the page, he was an all-around solid performer for Tulsa, giving the 66ers a little bit of whatever they needed. With the ability to score in a variety of ways and the ability to use his length to be disruptive on defense, Owens earned two 10-day contracts from the Spurs before returning to help Tulsa secure the fourth seed in the D-League playoffs. The Wizards then swooped in and called up Owens just before the end of the season. A 2011 D-League All-Star and a 2nd-Team All-NBA Development League performer, Owens finished the 2010-11 D-League campaign with averages of 12.4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1.2 steals in 30.7 minutes per game over 43 games.

In the NBA: Owens played a total of just 31 minutes in 7 games with the Spurs, but he made the most of his short stint with the Wizards, averaging 22.4 minutes over 5 games while posting 6.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and perhaps most impressively, 1.4 steals per game.

Best game as a call-up: On April 11, Owens played 22 minutes, scored 7 points, and registered 4 steals in a 95-94 win against the Boston Celtics

How does the D-League work?

We’re allowed to sign anyone from any team? Why do we have our own D-League team if other teams are able to sign our “farm system,” away from us. Defeats the purpose.

Maybe i’m not seeing this the right way, could someone explain?

by breaking20 on Jan 17, 2012 9:04 PM EST reply actions

you develop your own players

Jordan Williams likely to go down. J-WIll is ours and what you will see in next couple of years (and Nets have three year deal with Armor) is a system more like the MLB minor leagues.

This is a longer term investment and 15 games.

"It's as sweet as it ever was, I'll tell you. Now, hopefully, we started something and we can win some more championships, but we're going to enjoy this one right now. Have a little champagne." --Julius Erving, May 12, 1976, ABA champion Nets locker room.

by Net Income on Jan 17, 2012 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

So as long as we have the player under contract

Other teams can’t sign them away? I thought all of our players were under contract by the NETS. Who pays their salaries?

It’s just not making any sense to me.

I can understand that in the future it will evolve into something more than it is now but i still don’t understand how teams are able to sign players from other D-League teams.

by breaking20 on Jan 17, 2012 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

Only 15

guys can be under contract with the Nets. Right now, they’re all on the Nets, but J-Will could be sent down to the Armor and remain under contract with the Nets.

It would be cool if NBA rosters were expanded so that teams could hold rights to 2-3 D-Leaguers, but then those guys could only be called up by one team. If no one holds their rights, they’re free agents who have the opportunity to be called up by anybody, which is better for them.

NetsDaily.com

by NetsDaily on Jan 17, 2012 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

That makes more sense, thanks.

I figured there were some type of rules in place already but it sounds like the D-League is still in development mode lol. I’m surprised this wasn’t included in the new CBA. You would think that the idea of developing your own younger players would be appealing to teams. They hold a draft, i wouldn’t want another team to sign one of the players i drafted away.

Hopefully in the near future they put more guidelines in place and it evolves into something similar to MLB. Right now it’s too flawed.

by breaking20 on Jan 17, 2012 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

We do which is why i brought up the question

We own the team but not the rights to the players that are playing on the team. It sounds like they will be adopting new rules and guidelines in the future so teams can hold their D-Leaguer’s rights. That just seems like the right thing to do. Keeps the competitiveness within the game at all aspects.

Allows

you to develop coaches & staff.

More importantly, it allows you to send a young player or a rehabbing player down and have him play in the same system. That’s probably key if you have a rookie who’s raw and needs work, like the Knicks w/ Jerome Jordan.

All the staff are Nets personnel

so if they like a young video guy, they can hire him for the Armor and have him work there for a couple of years.

“Couldnt some other team pick up that player too?”
Not if he’s on the Nets’ 15-man roster, like Jordan Williams. If the Nets decide they don’t need J-Will right now, they can send him down to Springfield and have him play with the Armor all year, so that he gets needed experience. Other teams couldn’t pick him up, because he’s on the Nets’ roster.

After the Nets’ sign Owens, they could even send him to Springfield and keep him on their roster. But if they waive Horner and he goes back to Springfield, other teams could sign him, because he’s no longer on the Nets’ roster.

NetsDaily.com

by NetsDaily on Jan 17, 2012 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

Yep

But itโ€™s better if you run that D-League team and can have them play in your system, play for the coaches you hired, and have those coaches use him exactly the way you want them to.

If the Raptors were to send a player to Bakersfield, for example, they donโ€™t have that control.

I'm becoming a DeShawn Stevenson fan really quick
Stevenson showed just how valuable he can be Monday, when he fouled Blake Griffin hard as the big man attempted yet another highlight reel dunk. Someone had to put a stop to the dunk show, fittingly it was Stevenson.

He has to pay 10k for that flagrant, right? Sucks.

I gotta admit I judged a book by it’s cover just seeing his buffoonery on the court these last few years. He seems like an intelligent guy in interviews and brings a solid vet presence to the Nets. I liked the play where he called timeout and slammed the ball because people were just standing around on offense.

by NetFan48 on Jan 17, 2012 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

In regards to Dwight, I still don't buy the Magic's Bynum interest & Lopez hate

I think itโ€™s somewhat posturing by their part to try to squeeze more out of us.

Bynum is inarguably better than Lopez, but Lopez is very good and though he finally suffered the first injury of his career, Bynumโ€™s injury history is far SCARIER especially if you compare it to the data on the bigs whose careers have fizzled out after similar struggles in their first 6 seasons.

Bill Simmons did just that, analyzing the careers of all the notable bigs whoโ€™ve played in the last 35 years by how many games they played and how many games they missed. The list included Dwight Howard, Karl Malone, Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Kevin McHale, Charles Barkley, Dikembe Mutomboโ€ฆ etc you get the idea.

Hereโ€™s what he found:

What jumps out? First, the durable guys remained durable throughout their careers, with just one exception: McHale, who ruined the second half of his career by bravely (and some would say foolishly) playing on a broken foot in the 1987 playoffs. Second, anyone who missed more than 80 games and couldnโ€™t play in 90 percent of the games in at least four of their first six seasons went on to have injury-plagued careers. And third, if you canโ€™t stay on the court at your youngest/healthiest/freshest/most energetic, itโ€™s a pretty safe bet that things wonโ€™t change as you get older.

Itโ€™s straight DNA: Some dudes are structurally built for 82-game NBA seasons, others arenโ€™t. So if you make the argument "If Bynum can stay healthy, heโ€™s a franchise center," just make sure you also mention that we have 35 years of evidence that thereโ€™s a tipping point when "If he can stay healthy โ€ฆ" becomes "โ€ฆ heโ€™s not going to stay healthy." Weโ€™re there with Andrew Bynum. Heโ€™s not going to stay healthy. If I were the Lakers, I would trade him right now.

(Actually, what am I saying? They should definitely keep him! The guy is built like solid oak!)

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/110217

Are you really trading your franchise player for one of the least durable bigs in recent memory not named Greg Oden? And nothing else? Bad draft picks? Lord knows theyโ€™re not getting Gasol with him.

Plus, Bynum expires after next year. What if he doesnโ€™t want to re-up either?

by Anthony Perez on Jan 17, 2012 9:42 PM EST reply actions

I won’t get into a big argument about this because I got banned for it last week.

But neither Lopez or Bynum is a very attractive offer for Orlando.

I think the Magic and Smith will eventually end up taking the Lopez package because Dwight has a preference for the Nets, but I believe the speculation that the Magic are not high on Brook Lopez. Why should they wan Brook? He’s got a lot of work to do to prove that Season 3 was a fluke. He hasn’t improved his ability to set a screen, still plays too much on the perimeter and botches rotations on defense.

So Season 1 and 2 was a fluke

but Season 3 wasn’t? This logic….

You’re mixing it up. He improved from Season 1 to Season 2 and then took a big step back in Season 3.

What’s the misstep in logic? I said he has to prove that his worst season was the EXCEPTION and not the RULE.

A small forward.....finally?

I guess this is the best that Billy King could do. He’s known that we needed a decent small forward for how long? DJames is being treated by the Mets’ medical staff, so I am betting that he is out for the season. I am getting really disgusted. Except for against the defenseless SUNS, DWill has looked awful. The only good news this year, has been both Crash Davis and MarShon. Ryan Anderson had 30 for the Magic yesterday. Now that was a great trade…..I am sorry I paid $200 for League Pass. Maybe they’ll play hockey in Brooklyn?

Lets see what he can do

We just need someone to fill space and play defense and be able to make a layup. Shouldnt be that difficult, right?

by power_njerz on Jan 17, 2012 9:52 PM EST reply actions

stevieboy made two predictions

Larry Owens was the really difficult one.

The other that J-Will is being sent down…we await word

From what I heard he'll be at the game tomorrow.

Getting sent down after the game.I think it’s good since there is noway he’ll get into game shape sitting on the bench.

You play to win the game!

All we can hope is this guy gives us something similar to what this Fortson kid is giving the Clippers. BTW Blake looks cute on the bench, doesn’t he?This kid Evans for Utah will be having all the highlights on Sportscenter tonight.

The Clippers-Jazz game. They just got the doors blown off them alley oop style. Blake had to spend the whole 4th quarter on the bench. Ahhhhhh………Payback!

no Hollinger normally makes a bunch of subliminal jokes

new jersey has played the most road games in the league so far. 10 against the 4 home games they have lost

denver has won 3/6. OKC has won 6/7.

this time i think he is trying to be sincere

Better than nothing

atleast We have a player that is a average height at the sf position. We would play 6’5 player (brooks,Stevenson) starting at the sf. If he is good as they described him then he should fit good in our system.

by xxdariel17xx on Jan 18, 2012 4:01 AM EST via mobile reply actions

agreed!

possibly holding him out till less than a minute left just so he can get a taste before his big game of a full 3 minutes the next game
