Prokhorov On Why He's Running

In his first English language video interview since he announced he's running for President of Russia, Mikhail Prokhorov spoke to Reuters' Chrystia Freeland about his reasons for running and the risks associated with his candidacy. Prokhorov also says he expects to win"at the end of the day, I am sure I will win. I was a winner in business. I want to be a winner in politics." Well, all but one "business." Part II of the interview runs Wednesday.

Don't mean to stray away from the Nets

But he may have a higher chance of winning than some may think. I don’t mean he has a high chance of winning, but rather than most believing he has 0.0000001, he probably has 0.1% chance.

I have friends from Russia who says that the polls and elections from Russia are rigged. For example, they will send a truck of special people to go around different polling stations and vote and the voting station employees won’t cross their names off so they can keep voting. Moreover, there are starting to be people in Russia who are following the trend of countries such as Egypt that are starting to proteset.

So Prokohov’s 0.1% winning chance really depends on whether the people of Russia are ready for a true democracy. Unfortunately, my Russian friends believe they are not, because their lives are not so terrible that they are willing to risk being shot in attempt to overthrow the government.

Last May, he elevated his big sports advisor to the Nets board of directors

Sergei Kushchenko, former Euroleague Executive of the Year. I can assure you that Sergei is 1) fully involved and 2) talks regularly to Prokhorov.

there are various schools of management

he isn’t the only owner who has other interests that keep him away. Bucks owner is US Senator Herb Kohl (of Kohl’s supermarkets). The ownership of the Hawks is so fractured no one can name their principal owner.

Some are hands on. Some are hands off. Prokhorov is unique in that he is a foreign owner and the richest owner in the HISTORY OF SPORTS.

As he told the Times last, Euroleague is checkers, NBA is chess.

He just needs to keep his wallet open and let the ONEXIM Execs he put in place run the show on the day to day, and every now and then play the role of stern voiced mysterious owner.

If he were to become president

I don’t think it was ever precedented where a leader of another country owned an American sports team.. no? Would he be forced to sell the team? I mean, would David Stern really be able to slap a fine on the President of Russia?

It is my life's work

People should remember that last May, as he was getting into politics, Prokhorov appointed Sergei Kushchenko to the Nets board. Kushchenko was the Euroleague Executive of the Year when he ran CSKA, getting to the Euroleague Final Four seven straight times, winning it twice in 2006 and 2008.

Kushchenko, who is very knowledgeable about the Nets and the NBA, is 1) quite involved with the Nets and 2) is one of Prokhorov’s closest friends.

lowballing love

According to twincities.com:
Look for the Minnesota Timberwolves to offer Kevin Love a $60 million, four-year contract extension within the next eight days.

Love, 23, who is playing for $4.6 million this season, can become a restricted free agent after the season unless he signs an extension before Jan. 25. If Love opts for free agency, the Wolves would have the right to match any outside offer. Love also can return to Minnesota in 2012-13 for $6.1 million and become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

Cuban made mistakes

Remember it was Cuban who wouldn’t resign Steve Nash.

He also had 11 assistant coaches at one point.

Better sometimes to have basketball guys run a franchise. Prokhorov pays the bills…nine scouts, six assistant coaches, D-League affiliations, five star hotels, team chef, team psychologist, billion dollar arena.

stretching out into the future, the Nets are dead last at $71 million and I believe that includes player options, so Farmar’s $4.25 million and Shw Williams’ $3.15 million count. Next highest are Cleveland at $87 million and Indiana $88 million.

The teams with the most guaranteed, Chicago is at $292 million; Miami at $291 million; Atlanta at $244 million and New York, $235 million. Lakers? $207 million.

Loved how he deflected the question about whether he’s suspicious that Putin is corrupt. Bright man; i think we’re lucky to have such a high profile, politically savvy, business-smart owner. Dolan v Prokhorov – we won that one. Ratner v. Proky… hmm let me think. I think he’s got most owners beat. He seems tenacious and patient, so i don’t think he’s going to lose interest in the Nets and walk away – even while running for President. What surprised me is how much better his English is – one yr after his press conf about shutting down Melo drama. Now he’s involved in his own drama. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Owens will receive a non-guaranteed contract for the rest of the season, sources said, that becomes guaranteed if he lasts with New Jersey past Feb. 10.

The move is on track to be finalized Wednesday, sources said, but details are still being finalized. With a 15-man roster, New Jersey has to make a move first to create a slot for Owens.

Owens made his NBA debut last season when he was called up by the San Antonio Spurs from Tulsa in January. He served out two 10-day contracts with the Spurs before joining the Washington Wizards in April and finishing the season with them.

The 6-7, 210-pound forward is averaging 13.2 points and 5.2 rebounds in just over 34 minutes per game for Tulsa. Owens will become the 16th NBA call-up from the D-League this season.

"I think suspicion is more for women" haha prokhorov is the man

Honestly, I love Proky. I think he is one of the sharpest minds in the NBA and his points against Putin’s campaign are totally valid. He needs to be careful how sharply he goes after Putin though.. Putin still holds a lot of power and it’s pretty well known that he won’t exactly fight fair to win.

He's 28 so he knows its coming up on his last rodeo so I'm sure he will play hard

"We're not there yet, but we're going somewhere," Johnson said. "And we're going to Brooklyn. We're not going to contract. We're going to Brooklyn."

The Cleveland Cavaliers are rebuilding the right way. No short cuts, just making the right draft picks and trades...

The NY Knicks are overpaying melo, amare and chandler in hopes to win a championship. Currently, the Cavaliers have a better record than the knicks.

I hope Billy King is paying close attention. Shortcuts rarely work…

lebron and wade are 2 of the top 3 players in the league (kobe being the other one)...

Then throw bosh in there who is a top 15 player. So miami is the exception.
