Howard To Clips? How So?

Dwight Howard has basically denied Chris Sheridan's report that he's interested in joining the Clippers, tweeting to a fan who noted it, "love how everything y’all see y’all believe. If it ain’t from the horse don’t believe it. But God bless u." Moreover, Otis Smith said Howard's agent has not told him the center has expanded his list of preferred teams beyond the Nets, Lakers and Mavericks.

And if that isn't enough, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN LA says the Clippers and Magic "haven't had any serious discussions with the Clippers about Howard since the lockout was lifted," which would mean before the Clips traded for Chris Paul. Moreover, Shelburne reports that Magic would almost assuredly ask for Blake Griffin or Paul, which the Clippers would laugh at and that the other big man doing well in L.A., DeAndre Jordan, can't be traded this season.

Sheridan is an idiot! When if he tries to say Howard will be a net then and only should you pack it in haha!

The Dwight to the Nets is as bad of a kept secret at the Melo situation was so yeah in all honesty I will be surprised if Howard isn’t a net by the deadline… Stranger things have happened though but oh well my life is good and I’m far from a fanatic when it comes to sports… It’s just entertainment baby haha

Again

Sheridan is just trying to drive site traffic, since right now that is his only source of income.

Sheridan is always suspect at best

along with most of the media, creating stories from the most obscure and ridiculous of sources. I’m sure Howard has better things to do than be editing his “list” when he has absolutely no control over his situation until the end of the season.

If they amnesty Mo Williams this summer

Could the Clipps sign Dwight outright to pair with Griffin and CP3?

As you said, the only other (besides Blake) interesting young big on the roster is DeAndre Jordan, but it doesn’t look like he can be traded this year.

So for Dwight to go to the Clipps, the Magic would need to let him walk for nothing at the end of the season. Are they really that stupid? I’m kind of wiling to believe they are. ::smh::

I have no idea what they’re thinking….

clipper fan

We are discussing that on CN, the only way i could see it happeningis if Dwight force his way, say he wants to be a clipper and in the offseason we do a S&T with Orlando for DJ and Bledsoe and if Orlando won’t do it we trade DJ for a second rounder to some team, this however is very unlikely. I believe he is going to be a Laker, hopefully you get him before them.

What a bad team can do for you ... via GM Survey !!!

Who is the best point guard in the NBA?
1. Derrick Rose, Chicago — 59.3%
2. Chris Paul, L.A. Clippers — 37.0%
3. Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City — 3.7%
Last year: Deron Williams — 50.0%

There was a story in Peter King's MMQB this week about the Eli trade

That shows us what we have to do with Marshon Brooks:

Smith, the Chargers’ rookie GM at the time, asked then-Giants GM Accorsi for unknown second-year pass-rusher Umenyiora in the week before the draft. No, Accorsi said; I don’t trade young pass-rushers.

San Diego had the first pick in the draft, and Manning said he didn’t want to play for San Diego, but the Chargers picked him anyway — and everyone in football knew they wanted North Carolina State quarterback Philip Rivers instead; the Manning pick was going to force the Giants to deal a ransom for him because Accorsi loved Manning and Smith knew it. So with the Giants on the clock, Smith called again.

"He brought up Umenyiora again,‘’ Accorsi told me last night, "and I said no. We were not giving him up. There was no way.’’

So now the trade teetered. If Smith had insisted on Umenyiora and killed the deal, Accorsi had an ace up his sleeve: He could trade down three spots and pick up a second-round pick from Cleveland … and still draft the Giants’ No. 2 quarterback on the board, Ben Roethlisberger from Miami of Ohio. The Giants liked Manning much more, but Accorsi wouldn’t budge on Umenyiora. Accorsi offered the Giants’ first- and third-round picks in ‘04, and an ’05 first-rounder. "We still want Osi,’’ Smith told him.

Tick, tick, tick …

Two minutes left.

Accorsi’s last, best offer.

"No Osi,‘’ he said. "That’s still a deal-breaker. But we’ll throw in a six next year.’’

Pause on the line from San Diego.

Tick, tick, tick …

"Make it a four,’’ Smith said.

"I’ll give you a five,’’ Accorsi said.

Done.

already did

but we need to bombard him with it

by Anthony Perez on Jan 17, 2012 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

it's a bold move

and a test of will power.

The one thing Giants had going for them, was how bad San Diego really wanted Rivers. The Giants truly were fine either way, they had other options at their disposal.

In the Nets case, they are the Chargers. Magic know how bad the Nets want and need Howard. Yes, Nets can play hardball and say fine, we’ll wait to FA, but IF the Lakers step in, the Nets are forced to do whatever it takes to get the deal done. If Brooks is a deal breaker between Howard going to the Nets or Howard going to LA…then bye bye Brooks.

We can all say that Magic have no leverage, but they still hold Dwight.

by domininaldo1981 on Jan 17, 2012 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

It would be amazing if King was able to do that

but its extremely unlikely. If Dwight truly has his mind made up that its Nets or nothing, and he tells Orlando that he will only resign with the Nets, I guess it might be possible for him to exclude MarShon.

We'll Be Fine.

PROBLEM
Accorsi had an ace up his sleeve: He could trade down three spots and pick up a second-round pick from Cleveland … and still draft the Giants’ No. 2 quarterback on the board, Ben Roethlisberger from Miami of Ohio.

We don’t have that alternative. We lose leverage of Dwight wanting to play for us if the Lakers make an offer, and Cap Relief + more low draft picks can’t make up the difference of getting the better big man.

We NEED Dwight. Without him we probably kiss Deron goodbye.

Blake is Clippers’ franchise young player.
This is big core for Clippers fans.

1 - D. Williams / J. Farmar / S. Gaines
2 - A. Morrow / M. Brooks
3 - D. Stevenson / S. Williams / D.James
4 - K. Humphries / S. Williams / J. Williams / D. Horner

Right now, Dwight is better, but not worlds better than Blake. Blake is also much more entertaining, much cheaper & “their guy.” They also have a perfect compliment to him in Jordan. I think the Clippers stick with their frontcourt & focus on upgrading their SG position.

Howard and Griffin have two different play styles and play different positions. I just think the Dwight to Clippers scenario is bologna and is just another team used to ante up the offer. I too think Dwight’s not going anywhere until the end of the season. Blake Griffin would be a great step towards rebuilding, but I’m pretty sure the Clips won’t let him go. Except for the blocks, he and Dwight have similar numbers (12 obviously has the experience and better stats overall, of course). They have shot blockers, they have scorers, and as tempting as CP3 + D12 sounds, it’s not happening.

complacency at work is damaging to the brain

how about this for a conspiracy theory(some of this likely mentioned already).
Nets and Magic already have a deal in place that includes:
- Nets tank as much of the season they can before deadline so pick has better chance of being in the top 10
- BLo’s injury is faked in order for his value to not be tarnished any more by being bad while playing with DWill
- BLo’s return will suddenly result in a few unexpected wins which makes him look better to Magic fans
- MarShon is not part of the trade because of Nets agreeing to tank season for above reasons
- OJ Mayo or Wallace will be part of deal

Hello Nets Blogger

Clippers fan here. You guys have a great active blog supporting a team that is having challenges. I have an off the wall question. We used to have a Nets blogger (troller) at Clips Nation named Jade (followed by a few numbers) that posted consistently for a few months with questions sounding like Napoleon Dynamite “Is Vinny a good coach?” “Do you like how Blake Griffins dunks?” etc. He fell off the earth and we used to like to play with him when he posted. He was harmless but quite bizarre. Is he still posting here?

Hello fellow fan of another team that has always also had "challenges"

Glad to see you are enjoying the success we had in the Jason Kidd days. Nothing like high flying dunks and premier PG’s to rejuvenate a franchise!

I’m not sure I know this “jade” character.

Someone had to do it. Clearly Avery isnt as tough as I thought. I wonder if Elie told stevenson to do it. then Avery benched Stevenson for yelling at Brooks.

by SIC One on Jan 17, 2012 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Didn't Avery approve of it in the post game conference

And said that’s what he’s here for.

And to be honest, I don’t think Avery didn’t benched Stevenson. He was trading offense for defense near the end of the game. The lineup that brought the Nets back into the game is what he ran with for most of that 4th qtr. Granted, Farmar probably shouldn’t have been in down the stretch, but based on last few games, I can see why he was.

by MrDollarBills on Jan 17, 2012 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

seriously

Does Avery teach the nets to foul lightly so they can always get a 3 point conversion? I mean have you noticed we foul AFTER they get the shot off? I’d almost rather them just let the basket go in. Why can’t we be one of those teams where we have no defensive talent but at least we play hard and foul hard so nobody thinks they can just lay it on us.

by Roccor420 on Jan 17, 2012 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

DeShawn needed to send a message, though not to the Clippers, to our own team. they were humiliating us with all those alley oops, and we were letting them walk all over us. DeShawn’s offense is limited but I love having him on the team, if for nothing more than to instill defensive passion into MarShon.

complacency at work is damaging to the brain -- part II

using a waste basket in the corner break room at work, I’ll shoot used paper towels from the opposite corner of the room — I usually miss. A few minutes ago, I’m in the break room, empty room of course, and I tell myself if I make this shot then D12 is getting traded to the Nets. I MADE THE SHOT!!!

by Versifiervt on Jan 17, 2012 3:36 PM EST reply actions

Maybe I'm crazy

But I would not trade Blake Griffin at this point. Not even for Dwight. This kid doesn’t even know how to really play basketball yet – scoring 20 and 10 on pure talent. When he learns how to play he’s going to be a real monster. WHY IN THE WORLD would they give him up.

So here’s my question to you: Your’re the Clippers. The Magic propose:

Clippers Get: Dwight Howard, Turkoglu, Duhon
Magic Get: Blake Griffin, Caron Butler, Ryan Gomes

DO YOU DO IT?

Do you do it?

You HAVE to try to keep Marshon.

You see two guys of the guys, Deron & Deshawn, who are part of “the bigger picture” talk openly about “the bigger picture” while coaching & mentoring him as if he were meant to be here for the long haul.

You could argue they’re doing that to up his trade value. You could also argue they see how important he can be to a championship team.

Either way, Billy isn’t giving him up without a fight.

If you're a team with cap space or TPE and

you can’t sign anyone or are looking for a missing piece and a team offers you a very athletic center like Jordan so they can sign Howard, are you really going to say no.

Heck if DWill bolts, so there’s cap space and the Clips want to dump Jordan on the Nets, what do you do.

by stenpoint on Jan 17, 2012 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

Having cap space doesn't mean a thing

Howard has an extremely small list of teams he wants to play for. The Charlotte Bobcats clearling cap space won’t get them Dwight Howard.

by NetsKiNG on Jan 17, 2012 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

It's the Clippers with Chris Paul, one of his preferred teammates, and Blake Griffin as PF

It’s going to be a very interesting option for Howard if he hits free agency.

by stenpoint on Jan 17, 2012 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

Dwight wants to be the man

Blake Griffin is the man for LAC.

Derrick Rose is the man for CHI.

Kobe is the man for LAL.

There’s a reason why Brooklyn and Dwill is the most appealing situation for him. He would be the MAN.

by NetsKiNG on Jan 17, 2012 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

Dwight will still be the man in LAC

It’s Griffin who’ll have to come to terms with him being the other big guy. He’s just been ROY, the other guy’s perennial All-Star and multiple DPOY.

The only obstacle of Howard to the Clippers is that they’re the Clippers. That may be OK with Paul but Dwight? The Nets have been under the shadow of the Knicks but those guys haven’t won anything in recent memory. The Lakers are the most famous franchise in pro basketball. Their shadow looms much much larger. Would Dwight be playing in the same city, in the same arena, as the Lakers while not being part of all that hoopla.

then it’s just the Mavs and Nets.

Even if

DWill was shooting a good say 46%, his career average and that of Paul as well, he’ll be averaging just 2-3 points more. Is that enough to cover the point differential in our losses? He’s getting the same 8 assists as Paul with a far inferior cast. Since you already hate DWill, every smile, every frown, every raised finger drives you crazy. Can’t help that.

Now, Chris Paul doesn’t get all the attention, does he. Griffin’s a handful so I heard. And DeAndre Jordan. And Butler. Even Billups, who’s shooting the same rate as DWill. You fail to see that because you want to ignore the ‘teammates’ bit.

This will change when DWill is playing at least with Brook. It’s not even Griffin, Jordan, Butler and Billups, just have Brook back. You’ll see. We saw some of it last year even when he had a broken wrist.

I can honestly think of 50 different times where Dwill has set up one of our stiffs for a layup or dunk and they’ve missed.

and that gives him a pass because?

I can’t support a quitter, sorry. He’s getting torched until he steps it up

by MrDollarBills on Jan 17, 2012 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

You are right

Deron doesn’t deserve a pass. The whole team is playing like trash, and Deron is a part of it. With the exception of MarShon, Stevenson and SheWill, the rest of this team at times looks like they have better things to do than to be playing basketball. Heck, add Petro to the list of guys that look like they want to play (he just simply can’t).

The Nets schedule has been brutal to say the least, so I can expect some games like this. But nearly every game, something has to give. And it does need to start with Deron. If he TRULY WANTS TO WIN, then he needs to leave it on the floor for 48mins. It doesn’t matter if those around him suck, he needs to go out and play. Yes, he doesn’t have Brook, or Boozer or Milsap or Jefferson or any other low post presence he’s had in the past, if he is a top 10 star, then adjust his game and play balls out every game.

some players just have to work harder for it. In Deron’s case, just because you’re a star doesn’t mean you have to stop working. If puts as much effort on the court as he does pouting, then this team will have more fire in them. Look at Kobe, when a teammate makes a mistake, he either get in their ear and encourages or explains it to them, or he gets in their grill and shouts and lets them know. Then he goes out and plays. Not once have I seen Deron do such a thing.

by domininaldo1981 on Jan 17, 2012 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

lol you really hate him, don't you

Outlaw the same as DWill? DWill makes mistakes, yes, but you have it figured in your head that he’s Outlaw. Now that is ridiculous and exposes your mind-set on DWill as if it wasn’t already obvious.

by stenpoint on Jan 17, 2012 5:27 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Outlaw was a Nets player

that got destroyed on here for playing like crap.

Please tell me you’re playing ignorant on purpose, and you really can understand why I brought up Outlaw to the people whining about D-Will getting his back kicked in on here? I’m not comparing their talent or skill level, I’m calling you all a bunch of hypocrites over it.

ANY PLAYER can catch crap for playing bad. D-Will isn’t playing special, so he’s not getting special treatment from me at least. You guys go ahead though, continue to get mad because the worse D-Will plays the worse the response will be.

And its poor form to lose your footing and go for the “oh, you hate him” route. Come on. Your entire response was dishonest as all hell

by MrDollarBills on Jan 17, 2012 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Nothing dishonest in any of my response. You’re just showing selective comprehension.

by stenpoint on Jan 17, 2012 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not ready to yell "trade Deron!" quite yet

but I agree he’s played like crap and we have every right to call him out, he deserves it.

by sheepareevil on Jan 17, 2012 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

The bigger problem to me is the turnovers

He is at 4.3 per game. His shooting % should drop due to defenses keying in on him, but his turnovers should not be so high. His career average is 3.

by fumblesnout on Jan 17, 2012 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

DWill's average for Utah in recent years was 3.5 TOs

He does get a good amount of turnovers.

But also to put that in context, last year, Westbrook averaged 3.6 TOs, Rondo 3.4, Rose 3.3. CP3 was best last year among the young elite PGs at a mere 2.2. DWill’s current rate is high but hopefully he eventually brings down his TOs to around his Utah average.

by stenpoint on Jan 17, 2012 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

Traps / Double-teams

Good looking up the Stats Mr. Dollar Bills. Difference? He was able to get clean shots off in Utah. He isn’t able to do the same with the Nets.

I agree he is playing horribly, and that needs to be addressed. It’s why I haven’t posted any response lately because he does need to be criticized for his lack of shooting %.

However…just to note. Posting once or twice I understand, posting the same message over about Deron in each thread (and I’m not saying this is you) or reposting and saying the same things. It’s a bit much. We all celebrate and/or criticize the team in our own way as fans, but I was hoping it would be less immature and more respectful. But then again I was hoping we would’ve actually won that Utah and Clippers games. We could EASILY won both. Jazz aren’t actually THAT good and Clippers without Paul? We should’ve won.

Both losses I admit were contributed greatly by Dwill.

by Roccor420 on Jan 17, 2012 4:55 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

when Outlaw/Graham were torched

did you scream about respect? when Lopez was dogged on here after his shoe fell off, were you worried about it being respectful? No, I think not.

by MrDollarBills on Jan 17, 2012 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

Actually Yes

I was. Not that I voiced it for Outlaw and you’re right I’m being hypocritical in that sense. Nor did I voice it for Graham because he was just terrible. However I think we all know that Deron Williams is NOT a stephen graham OR a travis outlaw. he may be playing terribly and not worth the 17 mil max contract player at the MOMENT but grahm/outlaw never had a 35 and 14 peformance nor put up any of the numbers that Deron Williams has THIS season (18 and 8 is still respectable in my opinion, not 17 mil / year respectable but you get my point).

Just saying we disagree on how we go about criticizing a max player or a “superstar” or “allstar” or “star”.

Oh yeah my response above was TO you but not ABOUT you. I actually respect your points because although you tend to be negative you make very good points that I can’t deny or logically fault in a debate.

by Roccor420 on Jan 17, 2012 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

eh? no i didn't take anything personal

I just totally disagree with you guys on this subject.

Deron should not be put on a pedestal. If he was playing to the best of his ability sure, but clearly he isn’t and its not 100% his teammates fault

by MrDollarBills on Jan 17, 2012 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

I will say this

If he played better in the Utah game and Clippers game I’m sure we could’ve won both.

I do agree that he disappeared on BOTH nights as a “leader” for the nets. He needed to step up, especially in the Utah game. Who returns to their hometown of 6 years and shoots 3 for 15? That squad although decent should not have beat us by 13, especially with Harris and Favors playing like crap.

Guess we did win that trade. =) I mean even with Dwill playing like crap, he’s producing more than harris and favors combined.

Anyway, back to the original point, I can only hope that he’ll get better. I am on the team that wants Deron Williams here period. For the next 5 years. Even if we don’t get Dwight. I say that because you’re right, I put Deron on another level because I want another Jason Kidd. If we don’t get Dwight it’s not the end of the world, if Deron leaves us because we don’t get Dwight the image of this franchise is done. For years and years to come. Like I said in an earlier post, the clippers finally got around to building a team the right way through picks and being bad…..it just took them almost a decade. I don’t want to wait 10 years to be proud about the nets.

It’s more than just player output or productivity vs their salary cap or star status. It’s about the franchise. Deron williams to me is our last hope. If he leaves (and in no way does you or anyone posting on this website diminish or lessen his chances of staying, although the direct twitter posts are somewhat childish) then this franchise is done in my mind and I don’t want him to leave.

That is why I’ll give him a break. That is why I’ll let things slide.

by Roccor420 on Jan 17, 2012 5:26 PM EST up reply actions

if he leaves he leaves

Shameer being a meanie to him on twitter, or me saying that the dude is dogging it will not help or hinder the situation

Good Find

by SIC One on Jan 17, 2012 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know guys, I still don't buy the Magic's Bynum interest & Lopez hate

I think it’s somewhat posturing by their part to try to squeeze more out of us.

Bynum is inarguably better than Lopez, but Lopez is very good and though he finally suffered the first injury of his career, Bynum’s injury history is far SCARIER especially if you compare it to the data on the bigs whose careers have fizzled out after similar struggles in their first 6 seasons.

Bill Simmons did just that, analyzing the careers of all the notable bigs who’ve played in the last 35 years by how many games they played and how many games they missed. The list included Dwight Howard, Karl Malone, Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Kevin McHale, Charles Barkley, Dikembe Mutombo… etc you get the idea.

Here’s what he found:

What jumps out? First, the durable guys remained durable throughout their careers, with just one exception: McHale, who ruined the second half of his career by bravely (and some would say foolishly) playing on a broken foot in the 1987 playoffs. Second, anyone who missed more than 80 games and couldn’t play in 90 percent of the games in at least four of their first six seasons went on to have injury-plagued careers. And third, if you can’t stay on the court at your youngest/healthiest/freshest/most energetic, it’s a pretty safe bet that things won’t change as you get older.

It’s straight DNA: Some dudes are structurally built for 82-game NBA seasons, others aren’t. So if you make the argument “If Bynum can stay healthy, he’s a franchise center,” just make sure you also mention that we have 35 years of evidence that there’s a tipping point when “If he can stay healthy …” becomes “… he’s not going to stay healthy.” We’re there with Andrew Bynum. He’s not going to stay healthy. If I were the Lakers, I would trade him right now.

(Actually, what am I saying? They should definitely keep him! The guy is built like solid oak!)

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/110217

Are you really trading your franchise player for one of the least durable bigs in recent memory not named Greg Oden? And nothing else? Bad draft picks? Lord knows they’re not getting Gasol with him.

Plus, Bynum expires after next year. What if he doesn’t want to re-up either?

by Anthony Perez on Jan 17, 2012 4:54 PM EST reply actions

And let's not discount how much the Magic fanbase would crucify them

For sending “another Shaq” to the Lakers, especially if the big trade asset they get turns into one big medical bill.

by Anthony Perez on Jan 17, 2012 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

After his incredible start, Bynum's luster has faded a bit

He’s still at 16 and 14 but that won’t be enough for a straight-up Howard for Bynum, a good thing as LA’s been very hesitant to deal both Bynum and Gasol.

by stenpoint on Jan 17, 2012 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

for those who think OKC would trade Westbrick for Deron

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=aw-wojnarowski_kendrick_perkins_thunder_celtics_nba_011712

Thunder GM Sam Presti wouldn’t consider a Westbrook deal for Chris Paul, so why would he entertain a Rondo deal? Westbrook’s relationships with coach Scott Brooks and Durant have had their moments, but the young point guard’s rapidly become a top-10 player in the NBA. Presti and assistant GM Troy Weaver drafted him fourth overall, when no one else in the league would’ve done that. They discovered him, raised him and they think they’ll win titles with him.

by Andres B on Jan 17, 2012 5:12 PM EST reply actions

the notion is silly

a 12-2 team is gonna break up what’s worked great so far for a guy shooting 35% and averaging 4 turnovers? sounds legit

by sheepareevil on Jan 17, 2012 5:39 PM EST up reply actions

exactly, once

you become a very good team in the league you focus within and try to do all the things bad teams/constantly changing teams can’t do: i.e. become perfect at all of the minatuae of the game- setting picks, spacing, ball movement, pacing, confidence in know where your teammates will be, cohesion off the court. next level stuff.

i’m dying to be able to see the nets get to this level one day

If we dont d12 we just have to suck it up and deal with. We all have to unstand that d-will wants to win now and is looking for a playoff team. I think we still have a bright future ahead. We have draft picks and assets, you never know who may come up. Example MarShon.

by SIC One on Jan 17, 2012 5:37 PM EST up reply actions

Boston would do Rondo for DWill

But you’ll also be saying goodbye to Howard. And Rondo would be double-teamed here too. Rubio’s probably untouchable, he’s too promising.

But KMart was part of the equation. And Lopez right now isn’t. That’s not hypothetical, that’s reality.

If Lopez was playing and it was the same, we’re losing and DWill’s playing badly, you’ve got a point. But last year we saw what it could be with him and Lopez together, with an injured wrist to boot. The situation should change when Lopez is back or we trade for that other guy.

by stenpoint on Jan 17, 2012 5:53 PM EST up reply actions

Just to point out:

Richard Jefferson – much better talent in basketball than anyone we have minus lopez and brooks.
Kerry Kittles – while he played he also was a much better basketball player than what we have on the roster.
Aaron Williams – not the best scorer in the world but down low physical presence (I didn’t say post)
Jason Collins – I can’t believe i’m writing this, I hated jason collins but he was our big man and did his job. We won many games because of his efforts, not necessarily on the offensive end.

by Roccor420 on Jan 17, 2012 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

Kittles was a great defender and good shooter

so is Deshawn. RJ was a good defender and athlete, so is DJ. Aaron williams and Shelden Williams are the same player. Collins was an excellent defender, then again the Finals Nets never had a scorer of MarShon caliber, who can create his own shot at will.

by sheepareevil on Jan 17, 2012 6:18 PM EST up reply actions

Not to nitpick

Deshwawn and Kittles I’ll agree although Deshawn stat wise is a much better 3 point shooter. Richard Jefferson and Damion James? I’d have to disagree. RJ was an offensive threat, slasher, high flyer and occasional 3 point shooter with great physicality. Damion James is…well…damion james. Great physical defensive presence but offensive black hole. It’s not a fluke that we scored 100+ games the second he came off our rotation due to his foot injury. Aaron Williams and Shelden Williams is roughly the same player theoretically, but Aaron Williams physical presence was unmistakable. Dude was like 250 with 1 % body fat. Solid Muscle. Shelden…not so much.

The only thing the 2000 – 2002 nets that went to the finals didn’t have was a low post scoring big man, ie. Brook Lopez.

That’s why it’s my belief that without Dwight, we still have a chance to compete as long as we keep Deron. WIthout Deron…..it’s back to the drawing board.

Something I need help with

Many say that in the Nets offer they can give Magic cap relief, but how is that?

One of the reasons Nets wanted the deal done early was because they could absorb Hedo’s contract.

IMO, That no longer exists. Hedo and Dwight combine is 29mil

Obviously the Nets will need to involve another team to make salaries work, but will the Nets be able to send out enough salary to take in both Hedo and Dwight (since I doubt any team involved will want Hedo)

Humphries can veto a trade…so who does that leave

Lopez, Okur, Farmar, Morrow, Petro, is only $25mil That’s 4 big pieces for Dwight and Hedo’s ugly contract. But still missing $$$ to match. Add $3million cash and the picks, maybe gets it done.

I guess I just don’t see the point of taking on Hedo’s contract when one can do Lopez/Okur/Petro/Farmar + picks for Dwight

Sleeper team

We’ve all heard the usual suspects: Nets, Lakers & Mavs. We’ve heard some chatter about the Bulls or Clippers sniffing around. There is another team that scares me though, especially via the free agency route. That team is the Boston Celtics. Their payroll is very light for next year, with only Pierce & Rondo making significant money. Teams are rumored to already be calling Boston waiting for them to blow things up. By simply trading one of Pierce or Rondo for an expiring deal (both guys have very tradable contracts), the Celtics would have the ability to sign both Howard & DWill. At a minimum they’ll already have the cap space to sign Howard.

The Celtics are a storied franchise in a big market, who feasibly could reload in one offseason fielding a new big 3 of Howard, DWill & Pierce.
