ESPN: Brooks Best Pure Scorer

ESPN's David Thorpe is out with his rookie rankings and he has taken the full measure of the 2012 Rookie Class and declared that Marshon Brooks is "the best pure scorer in this class" of rookies, ahead of a number of players taken well before him at#25. Thorpe ranks Brooks third, just behind Ricky Rubio and Kyrie Irving. So does John Hollinger.

"Brooks has shown the talent to slash for buckets while also making almost 40 percent of his 3s," writes Thorpe. "I like that he's mixing in both skills rather than one or the other". Thorpe also takes measure of Brooks measurements. "At 6-foot-5, he's a bit smaller than ideal for a shooting guard, but he's a tall man from shoulders to floor. Plus, his huge wingspan helps him overwhelm many guards who are listed at his size."

His arms are freakishly long

That’s the difference maker in his game. Steal of the draft!

by breaking20 on Jan 13, 2012 6:25 PM EST reply actions

It kills Hollinger to give dap to Brooks
The 25th pick in the draft, Brooks has wowed with his shot-creating skills. Unexpectedly, he’s also been fairly efficient, which was a problem for him in college.

Brooks has become the Nets’ go-to scorer by default, averaging a team-best 21.7 points per 40 minutes for the league’s 23rd-ranked offensive team. This isn’t just a guy putting up numbers on a bad team, either; Brooks’ 55.7 TS% is in the top third of all shooting guards, and he’s been a major plus on the boards. While he can suffer from tunnel vision offensively, and it remains to be seen if he can continue shooting this accurately, he’s a major steal if he plays anywhere remotely this well.

Brooks unexpectedly leads all rookies in estimated wins added, although it’s a close three-way race. Two factors will hurt him, however, in the Rookie of the Year race. First, his team — the fact that New Jersey gets hammered every game will weigh negatively on him since he’ll be seen as just a gunner. Second, however, is the hype factor — the two point guards ahead of him are simply generating more highlights, and that can be tough to overcome.

It’s like one of those back handed compliments. LOL He hates us. Brooks was one of the most effient players in the NCAA last year so how was that unexpected.

by DWILL-of-the-GODZ on Jan 13, 2012 6:29 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

Every “negative” thing Hollinger had to say about Brooks in that article is true. I don’t think anyone expected him to be this good.

If Deron left, I would be fine and MarShon and Brook Lopez as a good core. Maybe Hump in there too. Add Bojan and that’s 4 good young players going into Brooklyn. Add one of the young bigs from the draft and a veteran PG through free agency. There may be a chance to trade for another star player in a couple of years. (Lebron)

Rubio could be the best PG in the league a few years down the road. His ceiling is really high.

Yeah it makes no sense for Minny

They would be giving up two great prospects to rent D-Will for a couple months, and even with him they probably wouldn’t be competitive this year. IF D-Will is traded, its going to be hard to get equal value for him, because teams aren’t going to give up a lot of a rental player

by M I K E on Jan 13, 2012 6:48 PM EST up reply actions

bingo

Rubio goes out there to go to work, Deron is usually throwing his hands up in disgust every other play. Rubio is going to revitalize the Timberwolves, while the Nets stagnant and wilt with Deron looking like he wants to walk off of the floor.

Not feeling that garbage, sorry M I K E. You were the first one to question this dude and imo, your initial assessment was right.

Play hard, win or lose. IMO if Deron put out 100% the team would give a greater effort and hell we might have had more than just two wins, but its not hard to see why these guys don’t give max effort when their alleged leader is too busy holding his nose up in the air to play basketball like a man.

We have been improving every game so far (except for defense) and we’re rested while suns are not. They also play no defense whatsoever so that will not hinder us on offense. If we shoot like we did last game vs the nuggets and play some defense no reason we shouldn’t be able to win this game.

A little knock on the Nets fans, deservedly so
Asked what he misses most about being with the Jazz, Williams talked about the 19,911 who filled EnergySolutions Arena with electricity, passion and, in his opinion, a vibe unparalleled elsewhere.

“I think playing in front of the fans,” Williams said. “We …”

Williams caught himself and chuckled after saying “we,” and continued.

“They have the best fans in the NBA, I believe, game in and game out,” Williams said. “They support the Jazz no matter what the record is, how we’re playing, who we were going up against. They just always had our back.”

from the moment he was traded here mike. It’s killing me right now to read this from you, like seriously? You’re telling everyone else to chill? You wanted to stick with Favors and Harris

still

he was dogging deron on here before any of this happened, and now when fans have a legit reason to be pissed, we’re not supposed to be pissed?

does not compute

by MrDollarBills on Jan 13, 2012 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't kick him personally speaking...Deron's a great player.

I just wanted to go another direction.

I never was comfortable with this “Superstar Theory” on how to bulid a team.

But when your given your marching orders…you march.

You guys ever been in the service ? I thought so.

LETS GO DERON…

LETS GO NETS !!!

Very untrue

You killed him when he went to turkey. Questioning his leadership saying he needs to be here for the team. Let’s not re-write history.

Maybe if D-Will and the team were playing better, a few more people would go to see them.

Just a thought.

Beat The Suns? I'm going to pray on it!

Calling upon the spirit of Tim Tebow…..only doing it as a Jew, I am now praying that we pick up our third win versus the sad Suns tonight. Like TT, I think G-d has nothing else to do, but to involve himself (or herself) in who wins and loses sporting contests. So everybody, put you hands together and bow your heads, and pray for a win tonight. Did you know that Marshon is 1/4 Jewish, on his mother’s side?

IF Howard is traded to LA

I’m still not sure that D-Will gets traded. How much value could the Nets possibly expect back for him? Its not realistic to expect any team to give up elite prospects for a player that probably won’t re-sign with them anyway. It might be better to just keep him, make some moves in free agency, and try and convince him to re-sign in the summer.

WHAT

Of course we would change our minds. We are dogging him because he has put on consistently bad performances while expressing a negative attitude.

If he plays well and actually leads the team I’ll be glad to change my mind.

Do you guys think that maybe Deron is just now realizing that he alone can't carry a team?

This is probably a terrible shock to his ego right now. I’m sure he thought of himself as a superstar as well, but his talent alone can’t will us to victory… At least it hasn’t yet.

by Rudibager on Jan 13, 2012 8:21 PM EST reply actions

All he has to do...

is tell him self that Petro is his starting center. That should make him fill better…

or worse.

"Beware the Ides of March."

by Andy. on Jan 13, 2012 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

No, I don't think he expected to have to carry a team himself.

I think he expected to have more help. That is the problem.

However, when he is hitting his shot, he CAN carry a team himself, if only he had some help up front, besides from Hump.

by jerry25 on Jan 13, 2012 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

If at least Lopez was healthy it would be a different team and DWill

The plan was Howard or Lopez. Not Petro and injury-prone Okur.

I know, I know, that’s the first time that’s been said here.

by stenpoint on Jan 13, 2012 8:28 PM EST up reply actions

that's the thing

If he’s in on the “all in for Dwight”, he should know having a less than stellar supporting cast is a consequence of this strategy.

by sheepareevil on Jan 13, 2012 8:28 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

But we didn't expect an injured Lopez

Up until a few days before the season started, It was “all in” with the expirings and Lopez still around while we wait on Orlando for Dwight.

It became a different situation altogether when Brook went down. He did warn us we won’t like him because he’ll be grumpy.

Then upload it to a website link tinypic.com

The photo must be online somewhere

Find it online and copy the URL (or click something like “share this photo”). Create a post on ND. Click the little tree and paste in the link to the picture. Click preview. If it doesn’t work, the link is formatted incorrectly. Mess around until it shows up in preview. The click post.
