I've been watching the NBA my whole life (not quite 20 years)

Max, do you think Deron Williams is a top-10 player?

I was debating a few people about his production in another thread and I’m curious for your input.

I’m leaning towards no.

by Dopeness on Jan 12, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

Prior to the season it was:

1) LeBron James
2) Dwight Howard
3) Dwyane Wade
4) Chris Paul
5) Dirk Nowitzki
6) Kevin Durant
7) Kobe Bryant
8) Derrick Rose
9) Deron Williams
10) LaMarcus Aldridge

Now, I’d move Rose up and probably drop Williams out. Not sure who I’d put in his place. Sample size is still too small to dramatically change the list.

Kevin Love annoys me.

He makes me feel like a hypocrite.

I’m a numbers guy, I’ve been one since I was old enough to understand them. Kevin Love’s numbers suggest that he is not only a top-10 player, but a top-5 one. I just … there’s something about him. I don’t know. As I said, it makes me feel like a hypocrite. And it’s illogical because he’s the only player where I’ve somewhat dismissed his numbers.

I guess my only logical rebuttal would be that LMA is leading a winning team, Love isn’t. And I hate that argument.

Thanks, now I feel like moiso.

No, but in all seriousness, that’s probably the reason. I feel more comfortable now. Kevin Love is not a top-10 player because he’s white.

I agree

there’s something about Kevin Love that doesn’t fit well with me. I think he’s a stat padder, and anyone who calls proclaims himself to the best at his position while playing on a bad team raises red flags (not unlike a certain PG…)

Aldridge wins games.

Love doesn’t. Aldridge is less flashy, but more substance, more along the lines of Tim Duncan than Al Jefferson, who puts up great numbers, but doesn’t get his team anywhere.

Morrow and Hump were the Nets other two All-Star representatives

what does that tell you about the Nets? D-Will is the only player of starting caliber on the whole entire team! Obviously as a pass first PG with absolutely no talent surrounding him he’s not going to put up good numbers. Ya I’m not happy with his body language either but you know, he acknowledged it and said he needs to get better. He’s not going to all of a sudden exhibit great body language a few hours later. It’s going to take time but he will get better. Also for all of you saying he’s already quit on the Nets, he sprained his ankle and stayed in the game when he easily could of just said ow my ankle hurts too much I can’t play. Also 3 straight double-doubles sounds pretty good to me. I can understand this D-Will isn’t the D-Will we expected him to be but I don’t even think the reigning MVP D-Rose or the #1 PG in the league Chris Paul can put up numbers on this team like they have in the past.

That was mainly because I wanted to build through the draft...

I didn’t want to trade for Melo and Williams made me very nervous since we would have to resign him in a year and we know that was not a given.

I never liked the “superstar blueprint for success” idea but now that’s all water under the bridge. Deron’s on our team now and the most important guy on our team for obvious reasons. I don’t think it’s a good idea to bite the hand that feeds you.

All we need now is Deron to get booed at home games and on this influential website.

It’s very important to keep Deron happy right now and support him through these tough times. And if he ends up leaving us then we just have too start all over. But until then I will be Deron’s biggest fan…for obvious reasons.

by M I K E on Jan 12, 2012 5:19 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

(Us all) becoming Deron's fanboys will not help him play any better

I’m sure he wants to win badly, and is already trying his best to win (at least, he was the first 2 weeks… now he might be coasting).

We can kiss his arse like Avery day in and out. But ultimately, Deron will get sick of the losing and he’ll demand a trade of walk off in FA because of the losing.

Nets fans ultimately don’t really factor in his decision to stay/go.

Would you want to bring your best as a teamate? Like i said in the game thread yesterday deron is one of those dudes who plays good only with good players but when he has to play with players lesser than him, he doesnt give his all. Its like a mental check out because “these dudes stink”. Real leaders give theyre all no mattter who they play with and hold guys accountable to make them bettter. I havent seen deron do this at all this year. You think cp3 would do that? He seems to have more fire and will and most importantly leadership.

by 1stnamelastname on Jan 12, 2012 4:33 PM EST reply actions

I got one more thing to say lol

For everybody saying we are screwed if we don’t land Dwight, think of this. Kevin Love is a FA, albeit a RFA. Offer him a huge contract, try to drive up the price so Minny can’t retain him. Also, Wilson Chandler and Danillo are going to be free agents. Go after one of them to play SF. I’m not 100% sure but I think even before paying Nene the Nuggets were going to have a very tough time being able to afford both of them and now that Nene has signed a huge deal I think (but not 100% sure) the Nuggets can’t afford to keep both of them. Also, we will have a top 5 pick in the draft! Gerald Wallace is also a FA next year. And last but not least, we can definitely make a trade for Josh Smith. We are on his short list, he wants out of ATL, ATL wants a legit Center so they can move Horford to PF. Lopez for Smith.
There are plenty of roster moves other than getting Dwight (though he has been my favorite player since the day he was drafted so I really really really want him) that will make us a good team and entice D-Will to stay with the Brooklyn Nets.

Had the Nets not made the trade for D-Will would their package have been enough to Net Chris Paul this year based on what the Clippers gave up?
The Clippers will send guard Eric Gordon, center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu and Minnesota’s unprotected 2012 first-round pick to the Hornets for Paul. The Clippers will also receive two future second-round picks.
The Nets will send Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, two first-round draft picks and cash considerations to Utah for the All-Star point guard.

I don’t think so, but Gordon & Kaman are going to be free agents and I would take Favors over Aminu easily.

Horford out 3-4 Months

Al Horford is out 3-4 months which is devastating for the Hawks. When Brook somes back, I would imagine the BK will explore 3 team deal sending Brook to the Hawks and Josh Smith to the Magic and Dwight Howard to the Nets. It would make sense for Atlanta (a) becuase Josh Smith wants out of there anyway and (b) the Hawks could slide Horford over to PF when he returns. Orlando gets an athletic All Star quality forward, and of course we would end up with Dwight. Certainly there would likely be other pieces involved (Swag, draft picks etc), but the key pieces (Lopez, Smith and Howard) would seem to make sense for all three teams

wow that is huge

one of the trades ideas i’ve brought up several times here is Smoove for brook for the reasons you listed above (he wants out and a legit c to move horford to pf). this definitely helps us though I think, seems to me like brook to atl and smoove to orl could be legit. also, stop mentioning brooks in trade talks. we have leverage (supposedly) so dont give him up so easily! havent heard his name mentioned anywhere but here in trade talks.

we sign Howard in FA! haha that would be the best

dont get me wrong I love brook but trading for Josh Smith, signing Dwight (and obviously re-signing Deron) along with a top 5 pick going into Brooklyn would be SWEET. Brook is a restricted FA, could we make a hugely insane offer and hope the hawks dont bite? anyway, realistically, if we trade lopez for smoove lopez would stay in ATL. lets say dwight goes somewhere else (LA is the only other place) long term. McGee from WAS is a restricted FA, Bynum is a FA (with 16 mil team option), Kaman is an unrestricted, Roy Hibbert is a restricted FA. There are options, albeit many are restricted FA’s. Totally understand your point though it would put us in a tough spot

Deron William

You guys are seriously starting to become overboard in your lynching of Deron Williams because he isn’t “performing” to your expectations. Honestly, as Nets fans having to deal with the Ratner selling of the team and the 12-70 season, i don’t think us Fans have real expectations anyway.

If Brook Lopez was playing I think Williams would easily be playing the numbers everyone wants, but on such a bad team with terrible teammates I don’t think he’s going to produce nearly what we want. And that’s not solely DWIll’s fault.

You guys are all over him for every little thing he does or doesn’t do. Stop being Knick fans. It’s getting ugly.

He played with Brook for 12 games last year and shot 34.9% from the floor.

This year, in 10 games without Brook, he is shooting 35.4%.

The problem is not his assists, it is his shooting.

It's not ALL DWill's fault being leader or not.

I mean there’s so much blame to go around but we naturally blame DWill? That is such a Jersey attitude problem. Realize that we have so many other people that are to blame, ie.

Morrow – I’m loving him right now but 4 games ago he was an embarrassment. And in terms of his dribbling skills he still is. he is trapped at least a few times a game and loses the ball either driving to the basket to get open or pass off. Note if he does become better at slashing/driving and/or scoring down the post because of our need to play him there that would only help him but still, he is a one dimensional shooter for the most part.

Shawne Williams – Please send him back to the knicks. He’s hit about the same percentage I would have as a 6’0 Asian @ 200 lbs would playing for the Nets with no professional experience. Dude is terrible.

Shelden Williams – If he misses another sweet pass by DWill again down low in the past after drawing defenders I’m going to go ape moiso. He may have had a good dunk or two, but thats after fumbling 6 or 7 from Dwill.

Damion James – Have you noticed we score (even though we lose) better and put up higher numbers end game with him out of the entire rotation? He should be called a black hole because that’s what he is on offense.

Johan Petro -To give him credit he HAS improved this season. I mean i’ve seen him do things this season he never did before but he’s still bad at this point. I’ll refrain from saying “Turrible” for now but he has to understand defense does not equal fouling the opposing team lightly so they make the bucket and have an ANd 1 oppurtunity.

Realize that all players mentioned above short of Ammo are our Bigs. In the Denver game last night our starters came out firing and we were doing good until our second team came in and offensive black hole it was. And our DEFENSE. My god. My 5 month old nephew could’ve played better defense.

Who have we actually been able to say has been playing well?

Deron Williams – PPG 16.9 RPG 3.50 APG 8.2 EFF + 14.70. And this is playing on a terrible team (let’s face it, our current roster will not get anything done in terms of our goals this year). His shooting % could be better and his turnover rate is terrible but then again i see that more because of our bigs and teammates than him.

Marshon Brooks – nothing else much to say. Only spotlight on this team. He is smooth like molasses and not very quick but has mad skills to score. He’s made some rookie mistakes defintely but hopefully he will only improve. Defense needs have higher intensity.

Sundiata Gaines – He isn’t playing terribly which is why he’s on this list. He is exactly what we need during the times we need it. We as a team can’t seem to close it out but dribble penetration, up tempo and defense is why he’s here. He’s done all those things.

Kris Humprhies – I’m honestly wishing he would pull in more double doubles this season but I can see why this is more difficult without brook lopez playing. Defensive teams can close around him and we all know his offense is very limited to a jumpshot and a dunk. Everything else he’s scored is just lucky IMO.

Mehmet Okur – after the rust of the first few games I’m loving him (besides the back spasm bs). Dude won’t give us any defense but he will absolutely shoot lights out for us on the perimeter, stretch the floor and if brook lopez was playing he would be a great backup. I would love to keep him.

DeShawn Stevenson – again, he’s done nothing but come on this team, show/play defense and make big 3 point shots. Can’t knock what he’s doing, if he continues to get more in shape and lose some weight I would also like to keep him as a starting/backup depending on who else we bring in.

Awful!

DWill is playing some of the worst ball of his career. But some things are just not his fault.
He creates open looks for his teammates, like THE HUMPH. But THE HUMPH doesn’t finish, so DWILL gets no assists. He has no one to play pick and roll with. Sheldon is a clod and Shawne wants to shoot 25 foot set shots from the corners. AND we are playing 4 on 5 at the offensive end, so DWILL has to chuck long range shots as the clock winds down. But still, he is missing shots that he used to make. If I was on the coaching staff (BTW…why aren’t I on the coaching staff…) If I were on the coaching staff, I would design some two man games for Dwill and MarShon, or Dwill and Morrow. They are the only three players we have who have a real offensive game. The rest of the team is just offensive…..

i agree with the sentiment of this article

the lakers can contend for a title right now if they upgrade point guard or get another shooter/scorer. ryan anderson, j-richardson, reddick, even jameer nelson would be good fits for them. however, i wouldn’t trade gasol for any of them.

but these types of players are what the lakers need. they’re close, they just need to tinker and build around kobe/gasol/bynum. how they can get one or two more pieces without breaking up the trio is another story.

Which Nets players are suffering from DWill's 'poor leadership'?

Anybody have the answer to this?

Morrow? DWill kept passing to him even when he was on a slump, and now he does seem to have gotten his shot back.

Brooks? Some veterans take it as a personal affront when waved off by a rookie. DWill doesn’t mind.

Hump? DWill feeds him inside and outside.

Is is DWill’s fault James has been called stone hands? Is Petro getting the DWill snub? Is DWill’s bad attitude to blame for Shawne Williams’ missing shot? Shelden? Okur? Farmar? Gaines? Did I miss anybody?

So, which Nets players have suffered from DWill’s poor leadership and how, causing them to underperform and thus contribute to losses?

DWill has been awful. He’s below replacement-level right now. That’s Stephen Graham-esque.

At what point are the Nets going to express concern over his shooting? DWill has been shooting like TWill with a broken wrist since he came here. It’s not a fluke. It’s no longer a small sample size. His TS% was just as bad last year when he had a healthy Lopez.

Something has to change or i’m not giving him a max contract. Unless there are extenuating circumstances that we don’t know about (possible), he needs to start being more efficient soon…. not tomorrow or next year.

Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
