Game 11 - Nets @ Nuggets - Wednesday, January 11, 9:00 p.m.

Avery Johnson spoke to reporters in Denver Tuesday about Deron Williams' comments on leadership and frustration. Williams had told reporters following Monday's game, "I gotta do a better job of leading these guys. They can't see me visibly frustrated, because that's not good for anybody's confidence."

For Johnson, the comments were welcome and he said he and D-Will had spoken before the Hawks game about the issue, specifically his point guard's body language. "Anybody that’s in a leadership role, a lot of times it’s not always what you say, but it’s what people see." Johnson told reporters that after the discussion, he felt Williams had shown a better attitude and it helped the team's performance. Johnson ripped into all his players at a practice in Denver late Tuesday, calling them out on their defensive performance.

Their next test will be Wednesday night when the Nets open a four-game western swing vs. the Nuggets.who are 6-4 but have lost two straight. The Nets will get a good look at Nene, their top free agent target who decided to stay in Denver for $69 million over five. His numbers are a little below those of Kris Humphries, who signed a one year deal at $8 million. Nene has been slowed by a sore heel. For the Nets, DeShawn Stevenson (knee) and Damion James (foot) are out. Mehmet Okur (back) is a game-time decision, but he's more likely to play than not.

My expectations for this game

I want to see what Brooks does against a supposed good defender like Afflalo.

Hump and Nene are going to go at it under the basket.

Ty lawson is going to give Deron the business.

Gallo is going to drop at least 25.

Big game for Farmar.

We get this win.

The latest Bondy article says Avery's the reason why he acted better on monday
Frustrated by his team’s ugly start (2-8 heading into Wednesday), he sought advice from Johnson on how to cope with something unfamiliar: losing. His instinctual reaction was to vent through body language on the court, wear it on his sleeve, and then criticize himself and the team to the media afterward.

"Our offense sucks," he said after the Nets lost to the Heat on Saturday.

But Williams changed it up for Monday against the Hawks, a loss that was a much better showing from the Nets. He said it was a conscious effort.

"He brought it up," Johnson said. "He said that’s an area he wants to improve in. I said, ‘Let’s improve in that area.’ I thought he was terrific last night in leading the team, especially when things didn’t go well.

Deron is showing maturity by seeking out AJ's advice on how to cope with losing...

He is also showing he cares. If he was thinking about leaving us he could just sit back and enjoy the ride until trading deadline or free agency arrive.

I suspect Deron really wants to make it work here… even with all the setbacks, disappointments and losing. Deron might be taking a big step forward in becoming the leader of this team now, and going forward.

Who really cares about how he is "acting" or his "body language"

Screw that. Shoot the ball better, Deron. Stop dribbling the ball off your foot and getting the ball stolen. Play like a top-5 Point Guard, rather than the scrub you’ve been so far this season.

News flash! Not even Jesus can make this team decent with the way it is currently constructed. As for his performance, he is not a sg, he is a pg that feeds others with open shots which btw they never hit. We are last in shooting percentage! What else can Dwill do? a ton?

Devin Harris is two years older and nowhere near as good.

Derrick Favors may or may not be an All-Star, but if he is, it won’t be for several more years and it will be based on his defensive prowess.

Who would rather have right now, Enes Kanter or MarShon Brooks? In the future, Kanter may be a very good player. I always thought Jazz should have taken Valenciunas of Lithuania, who is playing in Europe this year and is better than Kanter.

The Warrior pick is protected. If after the lottery, the Warriors pick is 1-7, Golden State keeps it. They are 3-6. No guarantee that pick goes to Utah. If it doesn’t, it’s 1-7 protected in 2013, 1-6 protected in 2015 and then becomes two second round picks in 2016 and 2017.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, not one of those guys would give a shot at Dwight Howard. End of story.

(By the way, the Terrence Williams trade may turn out to have been a great trade. Right now, it’s Terrence Williams, Joe Smith, (Darius Morris) and the Bulls second round pick this year, for Sasha Vujacic, (MarShon Brooks) and the Rockets first round pick, protected 1-14.)

Well, so far this year he’s better than DWill.

“By the way, the Terrence Williams trade…”
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Can we try to focus, people?! The question was “why we suck,” not whether DWill may yet be awesome again or who does Dwight like.

Devin Harris, Derrick Favors and MarShon Brooks

I’ll take it.
Agreed on drafting the guy from Lithuania over Kanter.

The team keeps the picks for a trade during the season of Devin Harris and 2 round pick for Ish Smith and Louis Amundson. Or BK just brings Hump to Hulk up on the competition and the team keeps the picks for some other deal.

Still not sure if Nene would’ve been a bad thing:

1) With Lopez out, we would’ve had at least Nene as starting center, not Petro or Shelden (no Okur then). Nene could’ve been that quality big man who can finish DWill could pass to.

2) Orlando supposedly wants veterans. Nene’s numbers could’ve been inflated playing alongside DWill and without Lopez. A Lopez-Nene package might be more appealing to Orlando than Lopez and expirings at the trade deadline.

3) If we miss out on Howard, a Lopez-Nene frontcourt would’ve still be one of the better ones in the league, and one or the other could be future trade assets if their numbers were up.

I don't buy that the Magic want veterans & to keep winning

No GM in their right mind is going to think the Magic will compete at ALL after the Dwight trade. Even Otis Smith can’t be that stupid.

Their best bet is to dump their bad contracts as a tax for taking on Dwight, get young promising guys on rookie contracts and a lottery pick in the most stacked draft in years. Who is to say the next big Orlando star isn’t in the Top 5?

There’s a lot of posturing going on. You have to think logical here.

Otis Smith apparently didn't think they needed vets

But ownership did, which is what matters. The owner is old, they have a new arena and need to stay relevant.

They also made win now signings with J.Rich and G.Davis knowing full well Dwight wanted out.

by Jack Handy Jr on Jan 11, 2012 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

Whether or not the Orlando owner’s desire for veterans instead of rebuilding from scratch is right or wrong isn’t up for us to decide.

That’s just what has been persistently reported. Also, we of all people should know that cap space is not a guarantor of future success.

There was a timing issue of a couple of days or so. If Nene had still been available after Orlando called off trade talks and after Lopez got hurt, we might’ve signed Nene, which would’ve benefited us a number of ways as I listed above.

Anyway, history took a different turn but just pointing out that if we had gotten Nene, it wouldn’t have been such a bad thing, both in terms of this team now and our future trade position.

"There are certain areas of our games and our system that we’ve been explaining the correct way to do something and we have been consistently malfunctioning in that area," the coach concluded, "so they had to understand how important it is to us as a coaching staff."

Hence, the raised voice that was picked up on recording devices in Newfoundland.

"I am not disappointed or angry [at them]," Johnson said. "I just expect us to stop making the same mistakes over and over again at some point this season."

He just sounded and acted disappointed and angry.

"It was definitely the angriest I’ve ever seen him," rookie MarShon Brooks said. "His main point was the little things. They’ve been doing a lot of trapping of Deron, and we haven’t been there in the bailout spots, just the spots we need to be. Little things. He was mad about that because he felt it was something he shouldn’t have to go over with us."

Yeah, but never assume.

"He’s passionate about playing the right way and executing a certain way," Kris Humphries said. "It’s better to have a coach get worked up and care versus not care and not say anything."

No one disagreed, either.

"He was angry because we keep doing the same mistakes over and over again," said Mehmet Okur, who did a limited practice and will be a game-time decision while Damion James (foot) and DeShawn Stevenson (knee) missed practice and were ruled out for tonight’s game. "We’re trying to be on the same page at the same time, but in the last few games we got confused a little bit. We got panicked a little maybe. But hopefully we learned our lesson."

If not, the wrath of Avery awaits.

THIS, is the Avery Johnson that we need!!!!

For an unlucky and often injured rotation. Our offense will struggle, even with Brook back in the lineup, but I expect to see a better coaches defense. And while I bleed Syracuse orange, the 2-3 zone has no place in the NBA, especially playing against sharp shooters like ATL.

i like AJ but

I felt like MFratello would have been a better fit
He watched the Nets for the last few years while announcing
He helped rebuild Cleve and almost went to the finals with ATL

He is right about players not moving to the bail out position.

I have noticed it over and over. Deron or whoever dribbles to the right or left, the double comes (trapping him against the sideline) and there is nobody popping up top to take the outlet pass (and swing the all to the weak side). It’s so basic, I can’t understand why the aren’t doing it.

I'm all in. Go Nets!

Hey Deron, if you go to Dallas

You’ll get to sit on the bench with these guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CLD9WfKIyBM#!

I never use this word, but...

Could the Pistons pull two bigger douches? I mean, come on.

I’m gonna steal Ernie Johnson’s joke: They couldn’t move them over? It’s not like The Palace (of Auburn Hills) has ever had any problems with security in the past.

Did I see Yi over there?

Looks like he plays for Mavs now. Bring him back…. he is better than Petro.

Note the score at the time of the Wright dunk

he barely plays. WIll be interested in seeing whether he or Yi gets the minutes. I’m going with Yi.

i’m not the only one who thinks YI and Wrighr is trash just like Petro

by Aidar Berlinbayev on Jan 11, 2012 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

They are only getting garbage minutes this season....

It is interesting Yi gets to play with the guys he’s been most compared with during his rookie and sophomore seasons, there’s still time for him.

by Aidar Berlinbayev on Jan 11, 2012 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

minnesota isn't gonna just let him walk

after we trade half this team for dwight howard, who are you trading for kevin love (assuming he even leaves)?

also, how many times can you keep asking this?

by shane gayle on Jan 11, 2012 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

I think we are in trouble.. road trip and altitude= loss

No chance Jordan Williams sees the floor. If he is out of shape and cant get minutes at home games, how will he do in Denver?

Could be trying for Deron as well.. he isnt in the best shape.. I know he lived in SLC.. but his body is now adapted to East Coast altitude..

Also.. Denver losing to New Orleans at home is particularly bad.. they had their lemon game a few days ago.. unlikely to happen two in a row

by orangeeater on Jan 11, 2012 11:09 AM EST reply actions

Denver = trash

whats your problem with D Will he’s a Net that want to win haven’t have those in a while…if you got some one tell me who?

by Aidar Berlinbayev on Jan 11, 2012 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

Denver = .600 win pct

Nets = .200 win pct

Are the New Orleans players in better shape?

How were they able to adapt to the altitude and we supposedly can’t?

by stenpoint on Jan 11, 2012 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

Honestly i'm fine with players like D Will

Attract players here!!!win a chip maybe!!! i’ll take that over Outlol Graham Yi etc

whenever a good player comes to the Nets

fans always try to find some fault and run him out of town, just accept the fact that the man cares about winning and gets mad when he loses..thats what good players do!

Belichick said it best !!!

They will be breathing the same air we are …

by d2d on Jan 11, 2012 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

They need more practice...

They are visibly a more cohesive unit the last three games, starting to build some chemistry on the floor.

Just got to play thought and hang with those teams, the schedule begins to ease up late in the month.

Go Nets!

exactly. just let them ride it out

by avilanets85 on Jan 11, 2012 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

I hope DWILL

realizes that he clearly is a slow starter and feeds off his teammates for his offense to flow.

So this is MY message to DWILL

STOP CHUCKING THE BALL IN THE FIRST QUARTER!!!!!

Breakdown the defense. So your teammates are not hitting their shots but at least you have time to set up the defense instead of fast breaks off your high rebounding 3pt BRICK.

We should be competitive in this game.

Dwill, Brooks, Stevenson/ShaWill, Hump, Petro should be the starting lineup. Morrow is another slow starter that doesnt realize —> JUST SHOOT THE BALL. STOP PUTTING THE BALL ON THE FLOOR.

by SIC One on Jan 11, 2012 12:26 PM EST reply actions

I agree it's pretty sad watching Morrow's dribbling skills...

5 seconds of him with the ball in his hands equals 5 seconds of wasted possession.

He should start though, he’s been picking his spots wisely on the floor and has been knocking 3’s in a bunch, got to take advantage of that for the starting and closing minutes.
