The Net Who Changed Basketball

New Jersey Nets

A few years ago, a hoops writer joked that Julius Erving in the NBA is the most overrated player of all time and Julius Erving in the ABA the most underrated.

Fran Blinebury of NBA.com doesn't go that far, but writes this weekend that Dr. J's time as a Net changed basketball.

"Doc was the first guy to fly, he did things with a basketball nobody else had ever done," said Kevin Loughery, who coached Erving in the ABA with the New York Nets. "I honestly believe that Doc did more for basketball than anybody, on and off the court."

The NBA also posted a highlight package from years ago where Dr. J describes his time with the Nets as "getting a glimpse of the game in the 90's in the 70's so our game was probably a little ahead of its time."

I would love to see that uniform make a comeback.

Absolutely

The Nets should definitely strengthen their ties to their greatest player ever. I had the pleasure of watching the good doctor play many times, including a game at the Garden when he was still on the Squires. It is a shame that most people remember him as a fading star on those Sixers teams that were just slightly worse than their legendary Laker and Celtic counterparts. He makes my all-time favorite team with Magic, MJ, Duncan and Wilt.

I was at 2 games this past year...

…and didn’t understand why they have Magic Johnson (who is NOT/was never a NET) on the big screen prompting people to make noise, I’m sure Dr J would would do it, and that would make more sense. That really aggravated me, nothing personal against Magic, but again, he was never a NET!

Don’t they use the same video/graphics in all the arenas? the 3 diff teams I visit often all play the same stuff at least.

Amazing Dr. "J" stat...

In his NBA career Erving Shot 1.000 from 3pt range.

He only took (1) 3pt shot in his NBA career, in his last season, and hit it…

In the ABA he only took 2 three pointers…

You can debate all you want on how good he really was in comparison to the NBA all time greats, but he is a iconic, legendary and revolutionary player and there are very few of those around.

Erving and Ali both had that special quality which is very hard to describe but when you see it, you know it, and there is no and’s, if’s or but’s about it…

I consider myself very fortunate to have seen him play…

whats the benefit to the Nets having a season??

They will be forced to overspend just to fill in some spots. SF and PF.

If there is no amnesty clause we are screwed.

If they don’t make the playoffs Deron prob leaves.

1 more season in Newark.

I see a much brighter side if the season is canceled for the Nets.

by OneCGuy on Sep 6, 2011 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Scared thinking...but I think I understand your logic.

The most important item on your list of so called benefits if the season is canceled is Deron Williams staying or leaving.

I would rather have Deron play a whole season with us, then let him decide if he wants to stay or leave.

If the season is canceled we will then have to hope he decides to pick up his option for 2012-2013. Knowing Deron, who knows, maybe he doesn’t take the option and becomes a free agent next year.

You sound like a guy who doesn’t want to date a girl right now, because your not confident enough, but next year you will feel ready. The problem with that kind of thinking is she might be gone by then.

by M I K E on Sep 6, 2011 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

No not scared at all. I just see the Nets making a desperation signing to appease Deron for the short term.

The Fa class the following year will be deeper and we will have the trade assets of the 2012 draft allowing much better signings and trades.

Ian Eagle has told people

that losing the season would be the worst possible thing for the Nets in their pursuit of D-Will.

by Net Income on Sep 6, 2011 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

why is that.

There’s not many teams out there that can make a tarde for D WILL or sign him as a free agent. The only team i can think off is Houstons but they going to rebuilding mode. Therefore let him go check his options, he said he’s going to opt out anyway.

by Aidar Berlinbayev on Sep 6, 2011 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think anybody really knows what will happen in the future...

Maybe canceling the season turns out great maybe it turns into a disaster, maybe it’s a little of both.

But there is something perverse about wanting to have the season canceled. It’s like deliberately deciding to dump the season from the start, thinking you will then get the #1 pick. Might make sense on paper, but it’s fundamentally a perverted way of doing business.

by M I K E on Sep 6, 2011 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Russell is a good player

but he is almost like a Marbury or Francis type of player. Lots of flash but doesn’t have what it takes to win big games. A guy like Dwill is almost like the Jason Kidd of the early 2000’s. Not too flashy but makes the correct plays to win you a game and doesn’t do too much.

D WILL wasnt all that at the beggining but he turned out top3 PG let’s see how Westbrook will devalope over next year. In addition he got leader skills wich make him very interesting player to watch and i’m going to say it again boy is Freakish athlete.

Deron makes teamates better

Same can be said for Chris Paul. (Top point guards)

They’re like Kidd & Nash running the team and scoring when needed.

I like Westbrook he is a freak athlete and has that bull mentality.
In the playoffs when Harden ran the club Wbrook looked comfortable attacking which is good.
He’s a combo guard while Deron is definitely a point gaurd.

New owners don't have the clout that older owners have...

They have a pecking order in the NBA among owners.

d-will's words are the key here

he’s said that this team NEEDS to improve its roster for him to stay. he knows that he adds more value to this team than almost any other player in the league, but with a lost season, the Nets will not even have a chance to improve the roster.

at least if the season starts, the Nets will have an opportunity to build up a solid starting rotation and maybe even some depth on the bench.

by Chakroot on Sep 6, 2011 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

that's a good reason why

by nets14 on Sep 6, 2011 11:13 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Kidd of course was a great Net...

but there might of been no Nets team in the NBA if it wasn’t for Dr. “J”…

Julius Irving transformed the game. He was one of the first high flyers who truly electrified crowds with his ability to play above the rim. Plus he was a fundamentally complete all round player. I love how Dr. “J” described his and the ABA’s influence on the modern NBA game we have seen in the past twenty years…

Dr. J describes his game with the Nets as “getting a glimpse of the game in the 90’s in the 70’s so our game was probably a little ahead of its time.”

by M I K E on Sep 6, 2011 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

No Doubt

Dr.J was an extremely important player to NBA history, and a very important Net. I didnt live in that time, so I never saw him play. Kidd to me was the greatest Net ever because he saved our franchise in the NBA. I just dont know where the Nets would be right now if not for Kidd. Kidd is my favorite Net of all time because as a kid in the early 2000’s, I became a net fan the year before Kidd. They were terrible. Then when Kidd came, they became an electrifying team who had amazing success. Kidd really got me into basketball, which is why to me, he is the greatest Net of all time, im sure others have different opinions.

"What Dr. J did in the ABA has absolutely nothing to do with the Nets now"

That’s like saying your parents and grand parents have nothing to do with what you are now…

Dr. “J” was the premier player in the ABA, and one of the most exciting talents ever to play in pro basketball and without him the four ABA teams that were finally accepted into the NBA, the Nets being one of those teams, most likely would not have allowed into the NBA. The ABA league would of eventually folded since it could not afford to compete with the NBA indefinitely, and only the ABA players, not the four ABA teams, would of been allowed into the NBA…Hence no Nets franchise…

at the last meeting

nothing substantive was discussed. That’s why you haven’t heard anything out of the talks.

It was all about establishing the protocols on what gets talked about first, priorities, breaking out working groups, etc. The owners did not present a new proposal, which is what the players had hoped for. More importantly, Stern has said if games are lost, then the owners’ proposals will become more hardline to make up for lost income.

I believe that as the season gets closer

They will meet more, nobody wants to lose money, especially millionaires. Nobody benefits from a lost season, no one. In the sheridan article, he explains that they arent really as far apart as they say. I think the next two meetings are vital, I have a feeling these next two meetings will lay the groundwork for the owners drawing a good proposal that both either agree on or amkes the sides come closer in the next meeting. I think there will be a season, and a full one.

by Aidar Berlinbayev on Sep 6, 2011 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I found some of these comments about how sports agents are paid...
I think in all sports (at least in the US) guaranteed or not, the funds are not received until the client is paid. Same as lawyers, most say “we don’t get paid until you do” unless the lawyer states up front the fees.

That ensures the agent’s loyalty and continued hard work…
Agent fees are often taken as a portion of each applicable revenue event or paycheck.
You don’t get commissions for work not yet completed. By definition, a commission is a fee paid for a completed transaction.

While contracts can vary, generally for each check received, a portion is paid in commissions.

by M I K E on Sep 6, 2011 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

wow, awesome

thanks for the clarification.

now i’m beginning to think that the money-hungry moochers (agents) will be the driving force behind gettng something accomplished.

by Chakroot on Sep 6, 2011 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

The last time there was an NBA lockout in 1998...

Higher paid players and their agents pushed the union to end the lockout. It was generally considered a victory for the owners at that time…

On December 23, Stern announced that he would recommend canceling the season if there was no deal by January 7, 1999. As Stern’s deadline approached, the NBPA showed signs of division from within. Highly paid players were seen as the ones most affected by the disputed issues, rather than the union’s membership as a whole.

On January 6, the day before Stern’s deadline, he and Hunter reached an agreement, which was ratified by the NBPA later that day and by the NBA Board of Governors on January 7.

Widely viewed as a victory for Stern and the owners, the agreement was signed by both parties on January 20, officially ending the lockout after 204 days

by M I K E on Sep 6, 2011 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

CBA has a ceiling for agents

they can get no more than 4% of their players’ salary. Player and agent can negotiate a fee arrangement on things like endorsements and personal appearances beyond their NBA salary. That can be 10% or 15% or 8%.

Remember the Subway ad at the IZOD where Devin Harris is seen on the Jumbotron ordering a sandwich at Subway and then Sly runs onto the court with it? Harris got $2,500 for that. His agent got more than 4%.

Players still lose money, the sneakers they advertise dont sell as much because they arent playing.

you assume

that they are getting paid per sneaker.

they are not.

just as the owners keep getting the TV revenue, the players keep getting whatever sponsorship, endorsement revenue they have contracted for

How many players got sneakers deals 10 maybe 20

there’s over 500 players in the league and most of them getting paid by teams only. That’s Chandler went overseas DWILL, Farmar etc.

Sounds like Amare is leading the Knicks like a true leader leads...

Too bad Deron couldn’t be the same leader for the Nets team…

If the NBA and NBPA can’t come to an agreement in time to preserve the regularly-scheduled training camp, Stoudemire has organized a minicamp at the IMG Basketball facility in Bradenton, Fla. The camp is scheduled to run from Oct. 19 to Nov. 6.

According to several players, the Knicks’ captain sent out emails about the plan to all 10 players under contract for 2011-12, plus draft picks Iman Shumpert (who is already working out at IMG) and Josh Harrellson and a few free agents from the 2010-11 roster.

Well... Amare is happy being in NY and a member of the Knicks

So that’s a difference right there.

D-Will organized the P3 training in Santa Barbara just before the lockout

got all the players under contract plus Brooks and JWill to go to Peak Performance for three or four days. Each was given a very specific routine to follow during the lockout.

You may recall that Anthony Morrow tweeted at the time he had never spent more time with teammates than he did with the Nets.

what exactly are the rules governing the player-to-player contact at this point?

FO’s can’t contact players and vice versa, but players can contact other players under contract to work out together (for the TEAM’S greater good) even though the team isn’t paying them?

correct

front office cannot attend or watch workouts unless they are open to the public.

Ha Sheridan

all those sparkling pieces on the Knicks cost him his job? I’m shocked!

His new website is put together very well though..somebody must have spent at least 30 minutes on it.

I figured 16 but you could be right.

I am told he feared ESPN wouldn’t renew him. His fear was justified.

Hate to see anyone lose his or her job, but he just wasnt that good.

I don't get how anyone could think losing the season would be a benefit to the Nets

It’s pretty obvious to me that the less time Deron spends with the team, the less likely he is to identify with it and the more likely he is to leave.
