Avery Confirms John Loyer's Gone, Praises P.J. Carlesimo to Beats

In a 30-minute talk with the team's beat writers, Avery Johnson confirmed that John Loyer, the team's highly thought of assistant, will join Lawrence Frank's staff in Detroit. Although he wouldn't confirm that P.J. Carlesimo will be joining the the Nets, he heaped praise on the former Seton Hall and Warriors coach.

In addition, tweets from beats report Johnson says Sam Mitchell could return to the bench after losing out on the Timberwolves' job, but would make no commitment. Both Popeye Jones, who worked with Johnson in Dallas, and Doug Overton will get more responsibility.  In other coaching news, the Armor will hold a press conference Wednesday to officially name Bob MacKinnon Jr. as head coach and introduce other members of the Springfield staff.

Johnson also said Mikhail Prokhorov's political ambitions will cause some "shifting" in the organization but it shouldn't change much.  One "shift" that's already happened: Sergey Kushchenko, who's now described as an executive board member "is going to have more of a role."

Doubtful it'll be "news"

I was afraid of this...

Stern and the owners will now have public opinion on their side and blame players for continued lockout. Owners have players right where they want them. Owners probably wanted this result. They can break the union just like they did in 1998/1999. Owners will make tons of money in the end to offset any losses incurred if season is canceled…

by M I K E on Sep 13, 2011 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think either side is likely to have public opinion in its favor

if this continues too much longer.

I'm on the owners side.

The players are incredibly greedy and delusional.

True but

If there is full parity in ownership, Prokhorov’s fortunes become less of an asset. A hard cap is bad for he Nets I think…

Absolutely.

I think I worded that wrong or didn’t expound.

I am not on the owner’s side for a hard cap, I’m on the owners side in general though.

Truthfully, I could care less if the players wind up with a 65% revenue split as long as this thing gets done though. :)

Maybe there is still hope according to Howard Beck, NY Times...

http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/22748484/31952023

If there’s any good news to be gleamed, it’s that things aren’t as bad as they could be. Howard Beck of the New York Times reports that people in the know are saying things aren’t nearly as bad as they were in the last lockout:
As one person monitoring the talks said, "They’re not just sticking to one side and saying, ‘We’re not moving.’ "

That is a vast improvement from August and puts these talks light-years ahead of where they were during the 1998 lockout. While the circumstances may differ, the comparison is worth noting.

All this negative talk coming out of the meeting today...

on the players side, may just be negotiating tactics.

As long as they are still meeting and talking I am hopeful that this thing will get resolved in the next two weeks…

After Mason and Fisher leaked "positive" news last week...

the players union might be playing last minute hardball just to counter balance any perception that the union was going to be push overs and cave in without a fight. I’m still optimistic that the whole season will be played once everyone has saved face…

by M I K E on Sep 13, 2011 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

These MFer's are so arrogant and stubborn, they should be meeting 3 times a week.

I think it was Scott Van Pelt today who said something along the lines of this will keep going until someone on one side or the other says something disrespectful, then an argument will ensue and the talks halt altogether cause of pride and ego.

Ridiculous.

by vincecarter4pres on Sep 13, 2011 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

especially after the season we just had. Sport was reaching new heights, and these idiots can’t come to an agreement.

by NetsKiNG on Sep 13, 2011 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

The point some people keep making which is entirely correct is...

No matter what, whether it’s 2 months, or 2 days or 2 years, eventually an agreement will be made.

So why are they meeting once every few weeks instead of getting the most important reps from each side in a room with Stern and some other mediators day after day, or again, even 2 or 3 times a week until they hammer it out?

by vincecarter4pres on Sep 14, 2011 2:59 AM EDT up reply actions

If the labor situation ever is cleared, it could be a free agent frenzy like the NFL experienced. Figure that two names mentioned before, PF/C Nene of Denver and SF Tayshaun Prince of Detroit will be Nets targets.

I wonder if AJ planted this in Fred Kerbers ear...
Last season, Johnson started from scratch. He knew of his players, but he didn’t KNOW them. And they certainly didn’t know him. A very wise coach once claimed you never, ever know a player until you coach him (Actually, the way he put it was "You can want a guy for years, then you get him and realize he’s a (jerk)."

by M I K E on Sep 13, 2011 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Who did ?

I can’t understand how in such a small business relatively speaking, how G.M’s and Coaches don’t hear negative talk about certain players. Don’t they have connections with other organizations and their players, coaches, reporters and front office people ?

I would think if I’m going to spend millions of dollars on a player I would hire a detective or some firm to check out my future investment…

by M I K E on Sep 13, 2011 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

He has to be talking about Outlaw. Who else on this team has avery wanted for a long time?? Who else fell on Averys bad side?

by power_njerz on Sep 13, 2011 5:49 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I just read Billy Hunter's full comments a few minutes ago...

and it don’t sound like the union truly understands that the owners want them to continue the lockout. The players will end up getting screwed and losing millions of dollars that they will never see again. The fans will lose out on their love of NBA basketball and the owners will continue to be rich and get even richer.

I rather have no season then a 50 game phony season…Billy Hunter seems to think that staying out for a few months will somehow be to the players benefit. I doubt that will happen this time…Lets just pray that both sides are playing a game of chicken right now.

Actually, the longer this lasts,

the worse I hope it gets for BOTH SIDES. MUCH WORSE.

Fire Johnson and hire Brown - I'm telling you Thorn was smoking somethin' when he let Brown slip away in the night.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Sep 13, 2011 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know about both sides...

Most of these owners are filthy rich and have creative accountants and tax lawyers at their beckon call. NBA owners want to get even richer down the road. That is why they can afford to lose money during this lockout. Don’t ever underestimate the greediness of rich folk…Lose money now and reap the windfall in the future…

Players have very short careers to begin with. Most players in the NBA won’t be around in 10 years. Many mediocre NBA players have been grossly over paid in the last 10 years and now that will probably be coming to an end.

I just can’t understand how Derek Fisher and Mason Jr. were sending out positive messages and now it seems they are still many miles apart…

I just hope cooler heads prevail in the next week or so.

by M I K E on Sep 13, 2011 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

In this economy,

you could count the number of owners who stand to make any money or AT LEAST lose less money from a prolonged lockout than they already are on one hand: Herb Simon (Pacers) and Glen Taylor (Timberwolves).

Fire Johnson and hire Brown - I'm telling you Thorn was smoking somethin' when he let Brown slip away in the night.

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Sep 13, 2011 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know that Mason sent out a positive message.

It was probably meant to be private in reply and he made it public by mistake that’s why it was taken down so fast.

A player may have asked, “How long do you think the lockout will last?”

And Mason repsonded, “Looking like a season.”

Hate to be negative and I didn’t come up with that theory, but it’s an interesting angle.

by vincecarter4pres on Sep 13, 2011 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions

let's all remember this...

It is nowhere near crunchtime in these negotiations…

1. Players get paid up until November 1.

2. Owners don’t miss game revenue until November 2.

3. The NLRB has not ruled in the players charge that the NBA is not bargaining in good faith.

by Net Income on Sep 13, 2011 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

I suspect in this case

the NLRB will decide that neither side is bargaining in good faith.

IMO Sheridan continues to have the correct reading of the situation

http://sheridanhoops.com/2011/09/13/nba-lockout-dont-panic-they-are-posturing/

Judging from my own legal experience while negotiating, he is spot on. Right now, both sides are threatening scorched earth. Now’s not the time to get serious.

2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said
2011-2012 = make the playoffs without hindering future flexibility
2012 off-season = sign the second All-Star
2012-2013 = make a run for the championship

Mission accomplished thus far.

Woj sums it up best...

“@WojYahooNBA: Union and agents always knew NBA was going distance for hard cap. They want this to look like NHL. And hockey lost a full season getting it.”

Like I have been hoping all along. And if a hard cap comes then so does an Amnesty accordiing to Coon. Bye Bye Outlaw and hello Dwight and a good SF. Its worth the wait.

A half season is the worst thing to happen for us I think. Whole or nothing!
