Whenever The NBA Lockout Is Over, Nets Should Have Big Advantages
Whenever the lockout ends, the Nets should have some built-in advantages: a small market team about to move into a new arena in a big market; the third smallest payroll going into next season (only two teams, both small market—the Pacers and Kings, have smaller payrolls); two first round picks in a great draft (one of three teams with two picks—and in each case, one is protected); some reasonably priced and thus attractive assets; a mega-rich owner and one of the league's ten best players.
Billy King and Bobby Marks will have to very aggressive when the time comes...Mikhail Prokhorov will demand it...but the foundation is built, both literally and figuratively.
Billion Dollar Arena
A week from next Saturday, August 27, will start a year-long countdown to completion of the Barclays Center. Although the Nets plan a week long grand opening starting September 28, 2012, the arena is expected to done and ready for occupancy a month earlier on August 27. The Barclays Center will no longer be years away but rather month away. No more lawsuits to slow it. No more jokes about it being nothing more than a hole in the middle of Brooklyn.
The Nets will officially go from a small market team in a big market to a big market team, period. The Barclays Center will be the world's most expensive arena with amenities that have enthralled everyone from Deron Williams ("a baller's paradise") to Stephen A. Smith ("that arena looks fantastic"). Moreover, beyond basketball, It will be an iconic piece of architecture, a New York landmark.
On his tour last month, Billy King said he saw the Barclays Center as a big positive for the franchise and Brooklyn, comparing it to Chicago's United Center and Staples Center in L.A. "We have the best owner, and we’re going to have the best building. We’ll have all the tools. If a guy doesn’t want to play here, he doesn’t want to play in the city".
Prokhorov has said he expects the Nets to go from a team losing $30 million to one making $30 million almost immediately. It's that big of a deal.
Small Payroll
No one knows what the salary cap will look like until after a new CBA gets done, but one thing is certain: it's better to have less salary on your books than more. In that regard, the Nets rank third, behind the Kings and Pacers, in lowest payroll commitment.
Based on an analysis of the three most popular (and most accurate) salary lists, on ShamSports, Storytellers and Hoopshype, The Nets have about $39.8 million committed next season, which is behind only the Kings, at $28.1 million, and the Pacers, at $36.1 million. The Wizards are close at $40.9 million. (The Nuggets and Nets are close and the Grizzlies were in the mix until they signed Zach Randolph)
The three sites differ slightly in which contracts they count but all are in the same ball park. All four teams--the Pacers, Kings, Nets and Nuggets--have 10 players with contracts, options or qualifying offers, not all of which will be exercised.
Draft Picks
So far, the Nets are one of only three teams that have two first round picks in the 2012 draft. The Bulls and Celtics also have two. In each case, the teams have their own pick and a protected pick from another team. The Nets have their own pick and the Rockets pick (protected 1-14) from the Terrence Williams trade; the Bulls have their own pick and the Bobcats' pick (protected 1-14) from the Tyrus Thomas trade; while the Celtics have their own pick and either the Thunder's or the Clippers' pick (protected 1-10) from the Kendrick Perkins trade.
The Nets also have the Heat second round pick in 2012, acquired along with Chris Quinn during the 2009-10 season,
The Nets have all their own first round picks going forward. They have dealt their second round picks in each of the next three drafts. having sent their 2012 pick to the Warriors in the Troy Murphy deal (If Brandan Wright, who's still only 23, works out, not a big price to pay); their 2013 pick to the Timberwolves for Bojan Bogdanovic; and their 2014 pick to the Celtics for MarShon Brooks.
In comparison, the Knicks have no pick in 2012 unless they collapse next season and wind up with a top five pick. They sent it to the Rockets in one of their cap-clearing moves. They don't have a first round pick in 2014, which was sent to the Nuggets for Carmelo Anthony and agreed to swap picks with the Nuggets in 2016 as well.
Tradeable Assets
Only Deron Williams and Travis Outlaw have contracts that pay more than $4 million next season. The other players on the roster have smaller and thus more easy-to-trade contracts...and no one currently on the Nets roster next season is older than 27. Anthony Morrow's contract pays him $4 million in each of the next two years. He is 25. Jordan Farmar, 24, has a contract that pays him $4 million in 2011-12, with a player option for $4.25 million the next year. Johan Petro's contract pays out $3.25 million and $3.5 million over the next two seasons. He's 25. MarShon Brooks, 22, and Jordan Williams, 20, are on rookie contracts, whose details won't be known until the new CBA is worked out. However, Brooks is unlikely to make $1 million and Williams half that. The Nets also control the draft rights to Bogdanovic, 22. As a second round pick, his salary can be negotiated without the restrictions of a rookie salary scale.
Mega-Rich Owner
Mikhail Prokhorov is the wealthiest owner in all of sports (unless you want to count the Indian owner of a Mumbai cricket team...we don't). His net worth has been estimated at $18 billion by Forbes, $22 billion by Russia's Finans Magazine and more than $25 billion by ESPN's Marc Stein who spoke with NBA types who reviewed his ownership application.
He has already invested around a half billion dollars in the Nets and Barclays Center, acquiring 80% of the team, 45% of the arena (with the distinct possibility of raising that percentage fo 80% in September 2013) and an option to purchase up to 20% of the overall Atlantic Yards. The investment has gone beyond the initial purchase to include improving basketball operations, upgrading team amenities from hotels and meals to the use of digital tools like the iPad (which reportedly impresses Deron Williams); establishing a hybrid affiliation with the Springfield Armor; spending $4 million to break the lease at the horrid IZOD Center and doling out nearly $8 million to facilitate trades, most recently $1.5 million to acquire the second round pick used to take Bogdanovic in the draft.
The latest indication that he's still spending money is the news that the team will likely build a new training facility to go with the practice facility at Barclays. He has also promised to make the Nets the NBA's "first global brand" and make Deron Williams a global superstar, twice agreeing to forsake home court dates to play in London.
Deron Williams
He may be packing his bags for Turkey, but as this week's player rankings note once again, the 27-year-old is one of the top ten players in the NBA and his acquisition could mirror that of Jason Kidd in 2001, a franchise changer. Yes, he has a player's option at the end of this season (assuming the new CBA doesn't alter that) but a new, more stringent CBA could work in the Nets favor.
As Fred Kerber pointed out after his press conference back in February.
The Nets may find an enormous ally in a new collective bargaining agreement. After next season, when he will make $16.35 million, Williams can opt out of his final year, (2012-13) when he is due for $17.77 million. It can be Carmelo Anthony all over again...But a new CBA, with owners and the league seeking greater fiscal restraints and lesser contract lengths, could make $17 million irresistible.
Moreover, D-Will has done nothing, said nothing to make the front office believe they aren't in his good graces as we have chronicled in our recurring feature, "Deron Williams In His Own Words". As Chris Broussard wrote last month, his interest in the team in genuine...as long as they get him some players.
Deron spent five-and-a-half seasons in Utah in near anonymity, so being the face of the Nets' move to Brooklyn has excited him. He truly feels good about staying in New Jersey, although it's not a done deal yet. If the Nets can lure (Dwight) Howard there, however, it will be; there would be no reason whatsoever for D-Will to leave in that case.
Did someone say Dwight Howard? We'll stop there.

Yup, the Nets will not trade Deron
Let him walk away from all this. G’head.

Hate to say this but
I think the Nets would be better off if the NBA season is cancelled.
Possible lottery pick, more free agents, Barclays will be open
On paper it seems like we would be better off not playing this year...
but when you think a negative situation is somehow going to produce a positive one for you, down the road, your skating on thin ice. Too many variables involved…
I would rather play this year and let the future take care of itself…

Agree with this
Who knows what the new CBA will be like and should Deron decide to opt out of his contract, we won’t have been given a chance to win with him.
On the flip side, if we use our cap space, sign players, and we still are a miserable team… Deron is not going to see much of a bright future.
Who knows.

It just seems like there is more room for error by signing FAs this season and having to make a deal to get Dwight. Missing the season would make an easier path for him to sign as a FA and maybe at a lower price. Its risky either way I guess

Either way, whatever happens...
the Nets will have to come out and play, whether it’s in 2011/2012 or 2012/2013…
The main goal is keeping Deron in Brooklyn. If he wants to stay with us everything else can be worked out eventually.
Deron knows the score. He might even tell King that’s he’s willing to wait until 2012/2013 free agency players come out, if we can’t get the right players in 2011/2012 free agency.
I think as long as the Nets are willing to go after good players, Deron should be happy. Plus it will help if Deron actually “recruits” the players he wants on the team. Then he can’t say the Nets let him down.

My hope is for a half season.
From everything I have read/heard/seen, it seems like there’s no chance at all that we are seeing a full season of basketball. In fact, I expect no basketball at all. But I hope for a half season.

There would be too much uncertainty if the season was cancelled because...
on the one hand it may help if they condensed the time periods between the 2011 free agency, 2012 trade deadline and 2012 draft / 2012 free agency.
People are not considering how complicated it would become – would blow some people’s minds to figure it out.
The 2011 free agency decisions might then be geared to maintain cap space, knowing that Dwight might be coming.
On the other hand, if it didn’t meet DWill’s approval he could leave.
Or if the CBA is resolved in say April, rather than early February, the NBA could do things differently. No one will know until the CBA is resolved and also whether there is a Franchise tag.
It will be complicated if the season was canceled...
but the NBA is a multi billion dollars business with plenty of egg heads on call to sort out the mess.
What makes me really worry is what if the 2011/2012 season is canceled and the lockout still continues into the 2012/2013 season. That would be a nightmare of epic proportions !

Anyone ever think that maybe deron will opt out and sign a smaller deal with us to make room to sign dwight and whoever else? That could be another reason hes going over seas also? To make up money hes giving up to make us competitive?
I could definately see that happening.

Are you related to Jerry25 by any chance ?
I seriously doubt Deron is playing in Turkey to make enough money so he can sign for less, so that the Nets can afford to sign Dwight Howard.
NetsDaily NetsDaily.com

lol no relation..Im all for him going overseas…just thinking different scenarios and maybe it is also in his agenda. The 3 creeps in south beach took less money to play together to try and win.

Who knows... you might be right...
As Chris Broussard wrote last month, his interest in the team in genuine…as long as they get him some players.
I wonder what players would keep Deron interested in signing with the Nets ?
Of course landing Dwight would most likely make it happen, but if we can’t get Howard, would players like Nene, Prince, West, AK-47 etc. be enough to keep Deron happy with Brooklyn ?
NetsDaily NetsDaily.com
@darooster8 we are a small but intelligent group of superbeings.
I would never suggest that would be Deron's motivation.
I have suggested is 1st motivation is to “stick it” to Emperor Stern and the Evil Lords (not Proky) who run the NBA.
That plus Deron’s desire to get on the BB court and regain his reputation (pre January injury) as one of the world’s elite players (he wasn’t even voted 3rd team NBA this past season).
And making a nice income plus giving his family a vacation where his children can learn a new culture is also a plus, compared with the negatives of playing in a 3,500 seat arena where people throw hot coins at you and ownership is crooked.
What the Nets might have in their favor when regarding Deron's future choice...
is that Deron seems to march to his own drummer. He seems to do what he wants, when he wants. He might just tell other players to follow him and come to the Nets, not the other way around…
If Deron is a true leader he will lead the Nets, not run off to someone else’s team. Just like Wade, he will have player’s follow him, to his team, the Brooklyn Nets, hopefully…

I have just finished a psychological profile on Mr. Williams...
and I have determined he is passive-aggressive in nature.
That means he will usually stay put, sulk and complain, unless forced to leave.
He stayed in Utah and complained, until Utah forced him out.
He is going to play in Turkey because the NBA forced him out.
As long as the Nets don’t “force” him out he is most likely to stay with the Nets. He might still sulk and complain but most likely will stay put, happy in his unhappiness.
Sincerely, yours truly…Dr. M I K E…Doctor of Psychology, ND University…

well put...
but there’s a level of victimization with all passive-aggressive personalities. “forcing him out” could be redefined to mean “they didn’t build a Chip-caliber squad in a year, so they’re forcing me out”
Very true Dr. Chakroot...
One must be very careful when dealing with this type of disorder.
That is why we must have Deron believe he has built the team himself.
Have Deron sign off on any major player decision.
Hopefully once he signs with us, we can get him proper treatment and avoid any further disruptive behavior in the future…

Turkey? No
But it wouldn’t shock me if he opted out of his contract, along with Dwight, and they both signed for the same amount that allowed the Nets some flexibility.

Sorry but...
I want to watch some basketball this year. It would be aggravating going a whole year without watching basketball…. And some of you guys think it’s already a done deal that Howard will sign here when anything can happen between now and 2012. If the Lockout can come to an end, then at least changes can be made whether its through free agency or trades.
i just dont want another Melodrama plus loosing draft picks.
Austin Rivers is one i would give up on a season and both players and owners not even talking about CBA at all. Breez, Manning star players from NFL did it but NBa players going overseas.

Nene said he’s not worried about the money but wants to play for a winner.
It would be another trade chip
I don’t know….Do you guys think Marshon Brooks and Lopez are good trade chips together?
I would love to eventually swing a trade for Josh smith.
But there is not a chance in hell that we trade them Brook. But what we could do is give them pieces to get a real center…

The Nets wouldnt trade Brook for Melo or D-Will
who would they trade him for?
Other than Dwight Howard. And if they had an opportunity to get Howard, I don’t care who they sent, but you can guarantee that either Morrow or Brooks would go as well as Bogdanovic.
well, the Nets wouldn't
and luckily for our side, they didn’t have to.
7-foot 23 year olds who can average 20 ppg over a full 82 game season are very, very rare, something which some fans do not get…but the Nets do.
Well we're lucky we didnt have to do that.
And we got arguably the best PG in the league for a PG who peaked, a rookie who looks like a total question mark, and Euro in the weakest draft in a long, long time.

I can't imagine D-Will walking away from this.
I just can’t.

I'm glad you wrote this article...
This team us headed in the right direction. All the panicked Net fans can finally take a deep breath. Let’s say Deron does opt out, where would realistically go? What other team with cap space to sign him can match what we have to offer? I think Deron understands this and knows that Brooklyn is is best shot at glory.
Welcome to Nets City

That video should go viral.

We need a season.
There is no way we can risk all of this just for Dwight and a high draft pick. Just like this article says, Deron can opt in for his 17.75 million, which with the new CBA would make it extremely attractive, but Dwight can do it also. He has an option for another year. He can just take the money that he cant get anywhere else for another year and stay in Orlando. It is virtually the same situation. Except for one thing, if there is a lost season, Deron played a total of 12 games with us, and we didnt sign any FA, which would make Deron more tempted to leave. Dwight knows he will at least get into the playoffs and be competitive. It is all a question mark for D-Will. Without a season, we wasted a whole year of basketball, signings, and go into Brooklyn possibly without Deron, and for What? A high Draft pick and a shot at Dwight? I’d rather have a season.
Hi guys, sorry for the question, I've been out maybe and you already discussed it, but I'm not aware of how it is on a lockout situation.
If this year is really a full season lockout, how will be the order of the draft picks!? Stays the same as this year, and the Nets get the 3rd pick? or the Jazz still have the rights of the 3rd pick?
Please elucidate me!
DWill all the way to the Finals!! some day, very close...
Nets own all their future #1 picks no matter what happens...
If no season is played at all, the Nets will most likely will get a good or very good first round draft pick in 2012-2013 draft, but no formula has been announced on how exactly they will determine the draft order. I hope I have electrocuted you !
NetsDaily NetsDaily.com
@darooster8 we are a small but intelligent group of superbeings.
Well, thanks =)
If no formula has been announced probably it’s going to be the order as this past draft… just don’t know if it’s going to be by the the Final Draft Order or if it needs another Darft Lottery.
Either way the Nets are big winners, they still get the pick they traded for D-Will, it’s like they “save” their pick for the a Greater Draft, and would make the D-Will’s trade look a even bigger robbery.
I love basketball, but more and more looking at all factors I see the Full season lockout as Great oportunnity for the Nets, we are the 3rd team with most cap space and with the full season lockout we would have more options on free agency and a lot of flexibitility with so many top draft picks.
DWill all the way to the Finals!! some day, very close...
No season is much better option
Still have a large amount of capspace.
Even more FA to choose from.
Better draft class and most likely a top 10 pick.
Boggy comes over.
We then will be able to sign FA and make major deals to put a championship caliber squad on the court immediately.
If we play this season we have to scramble for best case scenario. Nene and Prince, that team may get us 40 wins.
The 2012 team imo will walk backwards to 45-55 wins. Especially if we can retain Lopez and grab Howard. There will have to be an amnesty clause if no season is played this year and the cap is rolled back. Meaning no Outlaw thus allowing us to get a quality starting SF thru a trade of assets.
You mean
get Howard and either keep Hump or sign/trade for a 4. I’m not at all comfortable with having Lopez play the power forward.
And as I said earlier, the draft could very easily be a randomized 30 team draft, and knowing the NBA, the Nets could wind up with the last pick lol.
