Woj: Carlesimo "Strong Candidate" For Nets' Bench

Adrian Wojnarowski tweets that P.J. Carlesimo is a "strong candidate" to join the Nets' coaching staff. The Nets have lost assistant Larry Krystkowiak to the University of Utah and may lose Sam Mitchell to the Timberwolves in the coming weeks.

After leading Seton Hall to the national championship game in 1989, Carlesimo was a head coach for the Blazers, Warriors and Sonics/Thunder in the NBA, compiling a 204-296 record. He's also been an assistant for the Spurs for five years, and was on Jay Triano's bench in Toronto last season.

(A strict coach who emphasized crisp execution, Carlesimo also developed a reputation as an “unrepentant screamer” in his first two NBA jobs at Portland and Golden State. After a five-year stint on Popovich’s staff, he insisted that he had learned how to develop relationships with players, but several sources insisted that as Sonics/Thunder coach he reverted back to the strident ways that precipitated the Latrell Sprewell attack in 1999.)

i hope not

i’d rather PJ scream at and belittle outlaw every practice for not putting “extra mustard” on his passes and then outlaw choke him out and clock him square in the jaw.

then hopefully the team has added a true hothead who gets in outlaw’s grill for sucking and then outlaw rolls up with a two by four and then says he got the steel in the truck when its time to take it to the parking lot

and then the league suspends him for the season and knowing he cant be traded allow the nets to void his contract without an arbitration hearing

Not a gigantic difference being a 6'9" SF and a 6'9" shooting guard

Durant was so thin when he entered the league that being a SG was probably a good idea, he’d have an even bigger height advantage and less beefier opponents

If Gaines plays tonight, that will be very good news for the Nets...

It will mean his injury has healed significantly enough, if he can play again two days after scoring 39 points.

Gaines did look pretty good last year when he got important minutes down the stretch when games were on the line.

From that brief recap it sounds like Gaines was the star of the game, for the winning Franchise team…

39 points isn't a good enough indication???

seems like he’s fine. Played well with Durant last week at Ruckers.

Of course if the season is lost, he’s a free agent and Farmar has a player option and Williams has an ETO. So they could also be gone.

Oh God, what does it matter?

My fantasy is that after T-Will’s rookie contract expires, he will be waived, learn his lesson, and the Nets will bring him on board again. Playing for minimum he would then put it all together and become a nice role player for our team.

He wants -- Needs -- to be the center of attention. He's psychologically hard wired that way.

What I’ve continually said is that he is unable to be an NBA role player because of his psychological needs, yet he’s not a good enough player to be the star of an NBA team. That’s why what’s best for him is to go and stay overseas and be the best player of a team over there somewhere and bask in the attention he gets from 5,000 fans each game. There’s no shame in that. The shame is in not knowing yourself, which I’m unsure he does yet. That’s the sad part — to see someone misguided and lose his/her direction in life. He would be happy overseas, I think. Clearly, the attempt to become an NBA role player is not working for him.

Johnson, Mitchell and Krystowiak all had part of their salaries paid by their old teams last year.

Under offset clauses in their deals, if they were fired and hired by another team, their old team was responsible only for the difference. Of course, their new team could save some money by not paying them big salaries and let the old team pick up the rest. Nets apparently gave each of the three less than the market rate and then had their old teams make up the difference.

John Loyer, who was dumped by Philly when Maurice Cheeks was fired, also was still being paid by the Sixers in 2009-10 and maybe even last year (and someone suggested to me that Billy King also was still being paid by Philly last year.)
