Could Atlantic Terminal Lure Isles?

MTA

We haven't seen NHL commissioner Gary Bettman wandering around Atlantic and Flatbush in a construction helmet, carrying a measuring tape. Things have calmed down a bit regarding an Islander move to Brooklyn.

Still, there are some out there, like the Brooklyn hockey fans the Daily News found Tuesday, who want to see the Isles move 22 miles to the west despite a smaller capacity and questionable sightlines.

In the calculus, however, one thing isn't getting a lot of attention: the Long Island Railroad's new Atlantic Terminal, at the other end of an underground passageway from Barclays Center. Opened in 2010, it accommodates 25,000 LIRR passengers daily, many of whom switch in Brooklyn for subway rides to the Financial District. Some are suggesting that a return trip in the evening, with time out for a hockey game, could be a big lure for the Islanders and their fans.

it’s bad enough my nets are moving to brooklyn. if they’re going to be aligned with the repugnant islanders that’s probably more than i can take

the best thing that could happen to the islanders

would be for Wang to sell the Islanders to someone who would immediately begin negotiations to buyout that lease and leave Nassau forever.

They have two great assets (other than Tavares and a couple of other decent players): their Cablevision TV rights deal and their right to play anywhere in NYC. They made a deal with the Rangers in the 1970’s.

Still not made for NHL

Oder mentions the false assumptions of the arena not being made to fit an NHL for a regular season as well as saying that the cable deal is still a question mark.

yeah, so have we.

the issue is not the “arena fit”. The issue is how many seats would the NHL be willing to live with.

There have ALWAYS been plans for a hockey pad and ice rink, even after the downsizing. Barclays has a deal with IMG Sports to book college hockey, which requires the same size pad as the NHL. It has also booked Disney on Ice. Moreover, it has already installed the largest refrigeration unit available from the NHL’s preferred supplier, CIMCO Refrigeration of Toronto.

I still see Quebec making a strong push.

I mentioned this on another thread but I’ll sum it up again…

Let’s say that Quebec City gets their 20,000 seat arena. Like Montreal, they’ll sell out every night. Even assuming the Islanders could sell out the 14,500 seats at Barclays, which is a longshot given their 11,000 attendance last year, they would still be 5,500 short of what they can get in Quebec.

Multiply 5,500 times an average NHL ticket price of $50 and you get an extra $275,000 a night or around $11 million a season so you’ve cut the difference from $20 million to $9 million right there.

Throw in the fact that demand for tickets will be so great that many people will be forced to watch on tv and you have advertisers willing to pay a premium in Quebec to the point where they can get a tv deal that is close enough to $9 million in order to justify relocation.

Throw in all the extra arena revenue from concessions and merchandise sold from 20,000 patrons as opposed to just 14,500, again a very liberal projection, and you get a better overall deal in Quebec.

New collective bargaining agreement is simple. Give small markets a larger share of the national tv revenue sharing pie, limit MLE's to teams under the lux tax threshold, allow owners to terminate one deal every other year provided players have played at least 3 years on it and limit raises to 5 and 10%

the problem for Quebec

is can their new arena make up for the loss of local TV rights. The Islanders have a deal with Cablevision that extends to 2032-33. Right now, it pays $20 million. That’s double what the Nets get from YES. It goes up to $36 million in 2032.

Islanders have two assets: that deal and the right to play anywhere in the city limits, as part of an agreement made with the Rangers in the 1970’s. Their biggest liability is Nassau Coliseum, its size and location, its lease, its upkeep, etc.

Well, I don't know what they can get in Quebec City.

But the main point I was making was that even if the Islanders sell out every game at Barclays, and that’s a big IF, Quebec City would still most likely sell $11 million more per season in ticket sales.

So now you’ve cut the $20 million advantage to $9 million. With the demand for tickets at a high in Quebec, tv stations and advertisers are going to see an opportunity for all the viewers who can’t get tickets in person so I’m guessing that you can get a tv deal worth at least $9 million despite being in a small market.
