Frank Likely To Join Pistons
Lawrence Frank, who started his Nets tenure with 13 straight wins and ended it with 16 straight losses, is expected to be named coach of the Pistons Friday, following a year as the Celtics defensive assistant. Frank, a New Jersey native, inherits a team that was often in open revolt against head coach John Kuester.
Meanwhile, the Nets coaching staff is likely to expand in the next few months. Larry Krystkowiak, who left for the college ranks, has yet to be replaced and the team is expected to add two coaches for the Springfield Armor, a head coach and an assistant, who'll be Nets employees. Avery Johnson has said that despite the lockout he and the staff will start preparing for next season in August.

hopefully he can take it to another level in his coaching. but not enough to beat us regularly. =)
Poop!
LFrank is certainly taking over a big pile of poop in Detroit. But I expect many of those players from last year will be gone by the time the season starts. LFrank is a good coach and a good guy and I wish him luck, as he will need plenty of it in Detroit.

Congrats Lawrence Frank
and good luck, Opie.
Godspeed to him because that roster is a mess and they’ve got a lot of bad salary on the books.
I always thought he was a good coach.
With one year under Doc Rivers, maybe now he will be a great coach.

thats absurd
avery is an awful coach. lets just hope our players win despite him. lawrence frank was a good coach in a terrible situation. he put his players in position to succeed. 34 wins in 08-09 or whatever it was, was really a great season considering that roster.
Frank was in a worse situation?
REALLY? Kidd, Carter Jefferson vs. Harris, Lopez, Outlaw, REALLY?

when are we talking about? when frank had kidd carter jefferson he won 40+ games every year
when frank had harris, a declining carter, a rookie lopez and no-one else (simmons yi boone anderson dooling and hayes) he won 34. devin harris was an all star when he coached him, right after avery had him riding the bench in dallas

I think it’s easy to criticize a coach. Both men have their shortcomings but work tirelessly and should be given some respect.

Congratulations
I was always a fan of his. He always gave 100%. He had great self-discipline, great prep skills and a will to do his best. Of course, to live in Detroit, as opposed to near Manhattan or even Boston – ugh. And in the winter no less. If there’s a place worse to be in February than East Rutherford, I think he’s found it. That’s going to be a tough couple of years. Lots of screaming from the sidelines, lots of “tip your hat to the other team”, and large men laughing at Frank when he’s trying to teach them a game he never played himself.

On June 29th, 2001, the New Jersey Nets and the Phoenix Suns agreed to a trade involving Stephon Marbury and Jason Kidd.
On February 23rd, 2011, the New Jersey Nets and the Utah Jazz agreed to a trade involving Devin Harris and Deron Williams.
A new beginning. LETS GO NETS!

Well you gotta do what you gotta do
I mean you can’t talk in your normal tone when someone’s a good foot and a half taller than you.
I don't think he just kissed arse, he's a studier
He knew every play of every team and has every X and O down pat. That makes him an excellent assistant coach, perhaps one of the best, and he was thrown in the head coaching gig in NJ after Kidd got Scott fired.
But he is no head coach and never will be. He didn’t even make his high school basketball team. The guy has never stood on the hardwood and directed an offense. He’s never banded together with his teammates in a huddle to inspire victory.
He’s just never experienced the game beyond the whiteboard, and that’s why he wasn’t a good head coach for the Nets. Maybe Doc taught him a few things, but there are certain things that you just can’t learn unless you’ve played the game. His players know that and he knows that.

why wouldn't the same things you cite as reasons non-players can't coach apply to the gridiron?
You cite all this relate to the players stuff… How is that any different?
JJ for 3!
Football IS a total X and O's game
All of those players on the field, and so many reserves, everyone has an exact spot to be in and they run that exact play. So if the play is a run up the middle for Bradshaw, that’s what Eli is going to do. That’s what the offensive lineup are going to move for, and that’s what the receivers are going to do.
Frank would probably make for a pretty great NFL head coach.

NFl, is also a more complicated game
I dont think because he hasnt played at a high level he cant be a great coach
???
Popovich? Thibodeau? The Van Gundys? Flip Saunders? Alvin Gentry, Dwayne Casey, Frank Vogel None of them ever played in the NBA.
Does it really matter?
If your a NBA and your coach played in Highschool are you going to respect him more?
Is it respect?
Or was my original point being someone who understand the game played on the hardwood because they actually played on the floor?

Because of course
playing on the hardwood of a high school gym translates well to understanding what it’s like for NBA players.
Have you ever played organized basketball?
Section 18, Row 7 at The Rock!
"Your 2010-2011 New Jersey Nets - It Is What It Is"
yes I have
so has a million other people… doesn’t mean I’m ready to coach a the highest level. I don’t think having played on a crappy high school team would provide someone with great insight.
It’s one piece of the puzzle. You can always find something missing on someone’s resume to point out. Point is he did it. He coached at the highest level in professional basketball. Obviously it didn’t matter to the professionals that hired him (twice now) and the guys that played for him.
If you don’t like the guy as a head coach that’s fine. I just don’t think that one thing is the end all be all of why he shouldn’ t be a coach.
If you have NEVER played the game
Then you have NO idea what it’s like to be on the court. And that alone gives you a ton of perspective when you are a coach.

One time he was explaining the game in an interview
And said the players have to not make mistakes when tired.
Play through it he used to say??.
That’s one example of him not having played the game and how it hurt his decision making…
If you play someone for a full quarter they’re tired and will likely make more mistakes. Especially when the other team puts fresh bodies in.

Does it sometimes have an effect on Frank’s coaching ability? Yes, you can definitely tell it does. Can this problem be overcome by some assistants with strong player relations skills? Sure. If your top assistant can be an X’s and O’s guy, then he can also be a player guy. However, Frank does need to work on being more concise with his motivational speeches and post-game analysis.
by BrooklynNets on Jul 23, 2011 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions
he's a young coach plenty of time to work out the kinks
When he was here he didn’t have strong assistants always except Brian Hill.
Frank came off as a control freak at times but overall I think he was humble.

What? The coach couldn't win games without good players?
What a shocking revelation!
Frank
his main problem, aside from the fact that he couldn’t motivate those guys(not that grown men making millions should have a reason to play hard, which is another reason as to why they’ve been locked out of work), if that his in game adjustments were terrible and his offensive schemes were putrid.
I think he also made things way too complex. Simplification is the best way to teach imo, break down everything to the basics and then build on that. Seems like half the time the players were lost, especially on defense, but that also is probably because the roster was horrible after the 03-04 season.

He is as good as anyone regarding in-game adjustments. His talent pool above 6.6" sucked.
March 18, 2006, New York Times:
Frank predicted the play that Lakers Coach Phil Jackson would call on the final possession, and that allowed the Nets to defend it nearly to perfection.
‘’They made a great read defensively as far as Lawrence Frank,’’ [Kobe] Bryant said. ‘’He sent out all smalls, so they were able to switch everything, and that kind of took the play away from us.’’

That Detroit team is hurting.
I think first and foremost, they need to get young. I know with guys like Rip Hamilton bringing in over 12 million dollars a year at 33 years old, and sub par players like Charlie VIllanueva and Ben Gordon making nearly as much as Rip, they aren’t exactly in a position to make too many moves.
However, players like Brandon Knight, Kyle Singler, Austin Daye and Greg Monroe should give them a nice core to work with in the future. Especially Brandon Knight. I would like to even see him starting with Rodney Stuckey coming off the bench, but if I had to guess Stuckey is starting. At least Rip Hamilton only has one year left on his big contract, and fits in at SG with that young core.
I would like to see Frank convince Dumars to bring in Detroit guy, CDR. Frank still seems to keep in contact with him and even mentors him on twitter. I would like to see him get things together.

Frank is a fine coach..
As is Avery. Lawrence did what he could with what he had…with VC, Kidd and RJ he had a 2nd round and out team…and thats exactly what seemed to happen while he was here.
After the Nets blew it up he had less talent than any team in the NBA…and the Nets preceded to play horribly.
Unfortunatly for him, he is joining a team currently devoid of talent with only one marginal piece (Greg Monroe) to build on and a crummy cap situation. So unless they hit the lottery and land a mega star within two years, he will unfairly get blamed and be fired yet again just like he was here.
why take the Pistons job at all...

If he would have just shot free throws underhand he would still be in the league right now.

Boone also clashed with the team’s general manager, who told him “You don’t drink beer? You no man!” at one of the team’s early post-game dinners. "I came back and had like 20 and 10 in the next game, and he said "OK, you a man.’ "

I'm still waiting for Frank to prove he can coach
I still remember the footage of Frank “teaching” Kristic how to box out. The top of his head reaches Nenad’s nads & he was teaching him to box out. Right then it hit me how bad that season was gonna be. Now I’m not saying you need to be tall to teach someone how to box out, but you do need to have actually boxed someone out before to teach someone how to box out. Get an asst. coach in there to teach him please. That’s what a good coach does.
And I’m tired of hearing about his accomplishments with NJ. The Nets were fresh off representing the East in the Finals for the last 2 seasons when he got the job. Why is he still getting credit for the start & making the playoffs with a championship contending team? Did Phil Jackson get credit for making the playoffs year after year? No because he was SUPPOSED to be in the playoffs with those rosters! If Frank didn’t make the playoffs with those NJ teams he should’ve been demoted back down to towel boy…at Indiana University.

Everybody keeps busting on the rebounding thing
So it would’ve been better for him not to have told Nenad to grow a pair and learn to swing his elbows to secure the ball? Just keep letting him be a big 7’ wuss? People enjoyed watching him get the rebound and then getting it stolen? I vividly remember that happening with him.
Sometimes in life when you are put in charge of a situation, and you need to lead people, you need to step up and do things yourself if you want them done right. Regardless of how it looks.
I rather have a guy taking ownership of a his situation and going out there trying to fix things then sitting on his butt taking his paycheck and complaining about his players to the media. That’s why the players liked Frank… he communicated with them.
People should be more ashamed of Nenad for needing to be reminded of something he wasn’t doing.
Once again
It would have been better for him to get a guy that knows how to rebound to teach a guy how to rebound. I don’t get what’s so hard to understand there. And you wonder why people keep busting on the rebounding thing? You had a problem with Kristic’s rebounding & still see no issue when the guy teaching him couldn’t get a rebound in a Hoop It Up Game? One of the keys of being a leader is assigning the right guys in the right areas. Frank should know he is NOT the guy to teach rebounding no matter how much of a “Rudy” attitude he has!
That's ridiculous
With Frank, the Nets consistently had one of the best defensive rebounding teams without having a singular dominant rebounder. Boxing out was never an issue for the Nets, largely because the schemes Frank employed (and because of Jason Collins being awesome).
Frank knew how to rebound.

What an absolutely lame criticism
Of all the things to nitpick about. So he got on the court and tried to demonstrate rebounding himself. That makes him a bad coach? Thank god Nets fans don’t run this franchise.

Don't get confused by mention of that one clip I saw
He had a championship caliber team & only took them backwards! What else is there to say? THE END

The seven players representing Ooh-Way included: Dwight “Top Shelf” Hardy, Corey “The Priceless One” Fisher, Darren “DP” Phillip, Justin “Megatron” Burrell, Brian “Hitman” Laing, Corey “Homicide” Williams and Sundiata “Yatta”

Kobe weighing offer from Besiktas.
This may be the most important news for ending the lockout sooner than expected:
According to Lynn Zinser of the New York Times, Ataman has indicated Besiktas has made an offer to Bryant, and is awaiting a response from his agent.
DWill will have to find another NBA teammate in Turkey.

There was lot of talking me going to play for Besiktas during lockout. We couldn’t agree on the therms and I’m not going to play for them.

It is amazing how much criticism is lobbed at Lawrence Frank because he's a white guy who didn't play
by people who wanted us to bring back Byron ‘First to Worst Scott’ and were excited by Avery WTF? Johnson.
JJ for 3!
Wow because he's white?
Because he didn’t play…ok understandable maybe. But because he’s white? Really?
Yes.
Think back to the search for our new coach a year ago.
There was more than 1 person who explicitly said we needed a black former player to attract players and keep players happy.
JJ for 3!
If only David Stern was a black former player
Avery Johnson can go Outlaw himself.
NETS BASKETBALL…. JUST DEAL WITH IT!
I myself could care less what color frank is......
He still is a terrible NBA coach……
We should make a trade with Detroit immediately.....................
For their “2012 and 2013” …1st round picks (Not lottery Protected) because with frank as their head coach they sure are going to stink……..
One thing I've never understood...
Frank has never had trouble with his players not respecting him. To quote:
“Very passionate about the game,” said VC. “He wants to win. And he tries to bring out the best in his players. He’s great. He pushes you. He listens.” "
