Deron Williams...In His Own Words, Part III
Every once in a while, panic sets in. When Deron Williams speaks, the parsing begins among Nets fans. He said that but must have meant this. He's leaving. No, he's staying. So, again every once in a while we think it's wise and reasonable to lay out just what D-Will actually said.
We've updated D-Will quotes from the NetsDaily files, starting with Williams' introductory press conference and including his Facebook message, where he said Barclays Center "will be a baller's paradise" and what he said while playing video games with Tyreke Evans in San Diego in early May, what he said to Al Iannazzone in June and finally what he said to Chris Broussard about Turkey and the lockout as it affects his role with the Nets. We've eliminated the quotes from his ex-agent (although they were quite nice.)
Bottom line: there has been little if any change in his comments since Day 1. He likes what the Nets have to offer but wants them to add talent to their roster. And since Billy King said way back in May that people should pay attention only to what he and D-Will say, parse away...
"I'm excited to be a Net..."At first, it was a little bit of shock, but after talking to (GM) Billy King, talking to coach (Avery) Johnson, and just seeing the direction that they want to go in and the vision for their organization , it just really got me excited about the possibilities of competing for a championship in the next couple of years...It’s definitely a change, and a challenge, but I look forward to turning this thing around and competing for a title.
"They're very ambitious in going after a lot of guys. I'm going to help with that as well."
"I can’t really give any assurances, or say that I’ll be here [because] I don’t know what the future holds. I look forward to the possibility of it; it’s definitely a strong possibility. It all depends on how the next year goes – the CBA, the type of moves we make and the people we bring into this organization."
--February 24, Introductory Press Conference, PNY Center
"I’m gonna look to recruit guys... Since I’ve been in this league my ultimate goal is a championship. I want that and hopefully this franchise is going in the right direction. A lot of things appeal to me. The move to Brooklyn and we have a lot of money to get marquee guys and bring some guys in here is definitely appealing to me."
--February 25, Interview with Evan Roberts & Joe Benigno, WFAN
"There’s a lot of stuff that appeals to me as far as my future here. When your owner says he’s going to spend the money and put people around you that’s definitely appealing. Hopefully we can start winning some games and that the owner has a lot of power to get some people here. That will definitely draw some crowds. I’m sure the move to Brooklyn will.
"I'm excited to be here and trying to lead this team in the right direction: toward the goal of a championship."
--February 28, Home Debut, Prudential Center
"Everybody’s been great, the team has been great, the coaching staff has been great. The whole coaching staff has been great, making my experience great so far..."I’m going to have to [turn into a recruiter]. I tried to do it in Utah. But it’s tough. It was a tough situation. You’ve got to do it. Guys have to want to play with you and hopefully they will. And I’m going to try and recruit some guys to come here and help."
--March 3, Interview with Sekou Smith, NBA.com
"Yesterday, Amy and I were thrilled to welcome our new son and Nets fan into the family! I’m looking forward to hooping it up with him one day. It was a win-win day as my Nets pulled off a W against the Warriors. Next up? Clips at home Friday night!"
--March 10, Facebook
"[The Nets] are doing everything they can to get me stay here. The organization is great, the coaching staff is great, the players are great. Im having a lot of fun."
--March 16, Interview with Dan Patrick
"How can you commit to something you just got into? I just got here. I haven't even been here a month. How can I just say I'm going to stay here? That'll be great because that's what people want to hear, but I can't say that."
"You can definitely tell their objective is to keep me here. I've had a lot of good conversations. I met with Dmitry Razumov (Prokhorov's chief aide) and Mr. Prokhorov. They're pretty much keeping me in the loop.
"I've never been a free agent so, I mean, at some point I'm probably going to become a free agent.
"I'm going to need some help. We're going to need to get some other pieces."
--March 29, Interview with Stefan Bondy.
"I like this organization a lot. I like the direction they’re going. They made me and my family feel real comfortable since I’ve gotten here.
"I like Coach (Avery) Johnson — the way he coaches and the way he carries himself. I definitely can see myself staying here.
"We’ve had a lot of open communication in a short period of time that I really like. And just the organization in general, how they handle themselves from top to bottom. I think everybody has just been great here and I like how things are run.
"I would like to not have the distraction (of looming free agency) during the season."
--April 14, Season's End Press Conference
"It's cool to see the beams up. You hear about how it's going to look and how it's going to be finished. But it's good to come and see how the progress is. You can kind of start picturing it, what it's going to be like, see the layout of things. And it's good to see the area – I hadn't been to this area yet. It's different. This is in the heart of the city. It's kind of like the Garden. It's the same feel. It's special."
--April 27, Barclays Center Tour
"This place will be a ballers' paradise!"
--April 28 on Facebook, following Barclays Center tour
"We got the young pieces, but we need some proven guys, some veterans that have been around that have won. That’s what we are going to try and accomplish in the off-season ... I am all about winning. I’m not really interested in being on a team that’s going to try and rebuild for years and years".
--May 3, Interview with Cub Beunning, SLAM
"I'm definitely liking the organization. I'm liking Coach Johnson, and after numerous discussions with the organization, i feel they're going in the right direction... I think they know that. I think they knew that going into the situation...i think that's doable, especially now. In Utah, it wasn't as easy. Here once they move to brooklyn, thats definitely appealing to people, a new arena and the ownership. The owner is committed to winning. So it's a lot easier still."
--May 3, Interview with Scott Van Pelt and Ryen Russillo, ESPN Radio
"I like the prospect of staying here..."To be honest with you, we just have to get players. That's it. Everything else is great: the organization is great from top to bottom, the owner is committed to winning, committed to getting players. That's the bottom line. We have to get some players."
--May 3, Interview with Chris Carrino, New Jersey Nets
"It was definitely different. It caught me off guard when I got traded, and took me a little while to fit in. It wasn’t the best timing for everything to happen. But, since things have settled down, and I’ve had a chance to be around the organization, they’ve been great to me. They’ve made me feel really comfortable. I had a conversation with the owner, Mr. Prokhorov, and the direction he wants to take things in has got me really excited. I went and saw the site for the new arena, and how things are progressing there. There’s definitely some things that I’m looking forward to over the next year, and that will help me decide on what I want to do with my future after that.
--May 3, Interview with Brent Ringenbach, FUEL TV
(On the trade:)
"It was a little unexpected, took a little while to process and for the little cloud to go away. It wasn't the best timing for my family, but it's a new chapter, a new challenge and I look forward to it."
(On whether he'll stay a Net:)
"We'll see. we got to see how things go in free agency, get some guys in there. The organization has been so great to me, you know, in my little time there, making me comfortable so I'm defintely going to have to look hard at it."
(On Mikhail Prokhorov:)
"(Prokhorov) definitely has cash. I've had a couple of sitdowns with him, had some good conversations. He's a nice guy, definitely motivated to win, which you have to love and dedicated to find ways to win a championship. That's what you want to hear".
(On whether Prokhorov asked him to do "recruitng D-Wade style":)
"That's my job anyway. Got to do my job. I've already started and keep going."
(On whether he has players in mind:)
"Of course, but I can't really name names."
(On Avery Johnson:)
"He's been great as well, when I talk about the organization, from top to bottom, they've made me feel great and Coach Johnson is a big part of that. You know, we've had a short time to be together, but we've formed a good relationship. We talk still and I look forward to playing for him."
(On getting top recruits to join him, and getting the Nets to the championship:)
"Hopefully, that's the plan (smiles)."
--May 4, Interview with Zac Dubasik, Sole Collector
"We'll see. I'm definitely warming up to it and the organization has been great to me since I've been there and has made me feel real comfortable. I like coach Johnson and the rest of the coaching staff. I just want to win. That's my main objective. If we can get good guys in there and do something with the cap space that we have, then I can see myself staying there".
--May 5, Interview with Nicki Jhabvala, Sports Illustrated
(On Barclays Center)
"It was great. It was great to see the new site, the surrounding areas, get a feel for where everything is going to be and seeing a little more of the vision the franchise has."
"It’s cool. You can see everything coming together and they kind of walked me through where everything is going to be at. There was enough up to see where the fans are and get a feel for how it’s going to be and what type of what type of arena it’s going to be. It’s going to be a real close, intimate atmosphere. I kind of like that. You know it’s going to be spectacular. They’re spending so much money it has to be. Until you see it in person you can’t really imagine how it’s going to be."
(On contact with Billy King and Avery Johnson)
"I’ve had quite a bit if contact with them. I’ve stayed in touch with both of them. We text back and forth and talk on occasion."
"[Winning] is No. 1. I want to win. That’s what I want to do. I’m not really interested in being a part of an extended rebuilding process. They know that. They understand that. You go from there...They’re willing to do whatever it takes to put together a contender. I like that."
(On NBA teams emulating the Heat)
"They’re going to try. That’s what you have to do now. If you want to be as a team as good as them you have to have some players as good as them. You have to have some athletes. We’re going to have to try and follow that model."
"It’s always been said that defense wins championships. They are a great defensive team. All those guys get out and guard. I think it goes with their athleticism. They’re able to cover a lot of ground and cover a lot players that a lot of teams aren’t able to cover and that’s what makes them so special."
(On the Nets emulating the Heat)
"I hope so. That’s what we’re going to have to do. We talk a lot about getting some athletes in there. We have some good pieces and athletes, but we need some more. We need to be a team that can get up and down and lock down defensively when we have to."
(On moving to the New York area)
"I’m going to wait until after the lockout."
(On where he plans to live once things are settled)
"I’m probably going to do Manhattan.
--June 2, Interview with Al Iannazzone, The Record
"They have big dreams for Brooklyn and I can kind of picture that. It kind of excites me. I think it can be big."
(On the possibility of the lockout lasting the entire season)
"I think it will kind of put a damper on things because I want to see where the Nets are going this season. See what kind of additions we can make, because that will definitely help. But I don't know. I still can't really say anything until the new CBA because who knows if I even can opt out? There's no telling."
--July 9, Interview with Chris Broussard, ESPN
"For my Nets fans, I want you to know that while I'm comfortable over here, I'm not too comfortable. I'm still always ready to come back to the U.S. and have a good NBA season, and hopefully make some noise in the Eastern Conference".

I haven't been reading the panic Net Income refers to in this article because I've been out hiking this week but...
why do people assume Nets need to get Nene + Prince/AK and Deron will resign? I don’t think LeBron would have resigned with Cleveland if they had acquired Nene + Prince. We should be going whole hog after Dwight. Besides, when Pat Riley had Wade coming up on free agency, he was shedding salaries left and right rather than signing guys like Nene and Prince/AK to appease Wade.
2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said
2011-2012 = make the playoffs without hindering future flexibility
2012 off-season = sign the second All-Star
2012-2013 = make a run for the championship
Mission accomplished thus far.
If we preserved cap space for Dwight, didn't do much this summer, and won 30-38 games next year
Dwill would go bye-bye. Unless we have an absolute guarentee that Dwight would sign here, I think it is in our best interest and Dwill’s best interest to improve the team NOW and not rely on something that may not even happen.

While there is a chance that Dwight does become a FA
Because A. Orlando doesn’t think Dwight will leave them for anybody but the Lakers, and they know the only way he gets there is via trade and not free agency, they’’ll essentially dare Dwight to see what else is out there for him
You have to do at least something to improve this year, because unlike Wade, Deron has no connection or deep involvement with this team just yet. If the Nets do not show that there’s something there worth staying for, then an extension will get pretty iffy

“who knows if I even can opt out. There’s no telling.”
That sounds real postive if I’m a Nets fan…
Why are people surprised by this?
We all knew when we got him without an extension that there were no guarantees, there were no committments
he can't do anything till there is a new cba
He may be forced to play here for 2 years if the cba says so. Right now he has no contract until the new cba. Therefore, he can not make any plans regarding the nets. Till then he is playing in a summer league in Turkey until the nba gets its act together.
If he were to say anything else he would be lying cause there is no new cba.
Get it???
Nets definitely need something to improve NOW, and not wait for the summer of 2012
I think it will kind of put a damper on things because I want to see where the Nets are going this season. See what kind of additions we can make, because that will definitely help.
i think they are aware of that

Can we get a list of teams that will have low salary figures in 2012, after factoring in guys on rookie contracts that have to be extended
Because that will really be the list of Dwight’s likely options in 2012. Orlando is gonna tell Dwight: The Lakers don’t have money to sign you, so where are you gonna go? Charlotte? It better be somewhere worth being hated in Orlando for.
So ideally, we should try and have cap space in 2012, since we may be able to get Dwight without giving up Brook, but at the same time we need to do something, even something minor, to improve this year, in order to get the Deron situation under control
if there's a season he's going to play out all the game's according to otis
I have a feeling Nets should not give up Lopez so fast i got gutsy feeling he will surprise everybody.

I don't have a doubt that if we provide him with a good chance of competing
better than any other franchise then he is going to stay here. Also feel he is the best and most suitable leader out there right now for NETS.
Note it is always necessary to not take anything for granted that is the only way to remain competitive. NETS have to be competitive and aim to win the championship he is a piece and need to treat him as that. He expects the same from NETS that they will do what is good for the organization and keep themselves always competitive.
Orlando and Cleaveland tried to appease their star and landlocked themselves.
We cannot do that we need to find the pieces and remain competitive.
You cannot blindly follow the Heat model that is not the goal, the goal is to be a champion and Heat are definitely in the way, what we need is a team in place that can challenge them for years to come if it is a super team so be it. If it is another working model so be it
we need that.
DWill or none of the other super stars were aware of what Heat pulled off last year, similarly what Dwill did in terms of Turkey was a surprise for a lot of guys across the board.
We know the moves of Cleaveland and Orlando we need to avoid that but put ourselves in position like Memphis. Thunder, Portland and we would be fine with or without Dwill.
The point is if we are good with or without him, it would definitiely be a place where he would want to be,
My favorite

People have to realize that the perception about the Nets among players will not change until we officially "arrive"
They will continue to look at the Nets as that 12-70 team until we have our first big moment. Like the Grizzlies, they were playing fantastic all season, but they officially arrived once the playoffs started and they played like crazy.
The Nets still only won 24 games last year. Until the first big moment that signals their arrival, the Nets will still be the same old Nets, even to Deron

Wait, so you want to keep winning 12-24 games a year?
I mean, let’s forget about talented players altogether
We should sign back Kidd, get RJ, get KMart, get Jason Collins, find Hassan Adams, Antoine Wright, and be the REAL Nets
If LeBron or Carmelo were on the Nets, then yeah, they would be the “key”. I mean, I don’t really like Carmelo, but LeBron is arguably the best player in basketball, so if he is on your team, he leads to winning. Just because the Nets pursued LeBron and failed doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have been the key to winning.
The Nets have a superstar as of now. He is the most important player on the team…so yeah, he is the key.
By your logic
we should sit and wait through more incompetence and ignore the fact that superstars are available.

I really love people
who laugh off $5million dollars simply because they’ve “made a lot of money” in their careers.
Let alone that is mainly tax free and his living expenses are completely paid for while he's there.
by vincecarter4pres on Jul 10, 2011 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions
It is not tax free
There would be no state taxes for the period he resided in another country. However, he would certainly be taxed at the federal level, which is where taxes would hit him the worst anyways.
he would get a 90K exemption plus
all of his expenses could be a write off, but what i don’t know is if he has to pay Turkey taxes. If so he could write them off of his federal taxes. Either way he takes home more money if he just sat around in the US and waited for the lockout to end.
Considering the short length of the league's season
I’m leaning towards him not qualifying for that exemption for residency reasons. And if his living expenses are completely paid for, like said above (No idea if that’s true or not) then he can’t write that off either. :)
Either way, 5 Million is nothing to scoff at if your regular source for millions can’t be relied upon.
Mike...I would just count Deron out now....
And start rebuilding again……He ain’t staying here….
Who knows what Deron wants or don't want...
But if I’m in charge that issue would of been resolved by now…
And maybe it has…
If you were in charge it would be prudent to show patience

Ok so enlighten me on what Nene has ever won in his NBA Career?
The success of the Nuggets has always been attributes to Melo Karl and Billups. Never to Nono and even with that Nono has won nothing.
Prince makes more sense. He has a ring, won the ring playing on a very intense defensive juggernaut of a team, plays a position of weakness for us, played on Team USA with Deron and has a skillset that would work well with Deron.
Prince makes more sense in every way to sign then Nono. I feel like if we signed Nono Deron will be like you guys were not listening to what I asked you for. LOL. Signing Nono is just doing something to do it.

"We're not there yet, but we're going somewhere," Johnson said. "And we're going to Brooklyn. We're not going to contract. We're going to Brooklyn."
Actually , I am very optimistic....
But not with the Nets…..

or maybe he is using history to make his
judgment.
He said he is optimistic but not with the Nets.
Similar to the Mavericks. People thought that because of what they seen with the Mavs before they were destine to lose early. (me included.)
Until proven otherwise the Mavericks always had a reputation about them.
with that being said I can’t blame no one for thinking the way they do even if I don’t agree with it.

but I can’t blame someone who is feels iffy if Deron will resign or not.
It seems if someone feel that Deron won’t resign they are being negative.
Now I said before I will say again I don’t know if he will stay or not. I do know his decision will be based on if he feels he can win here.

I agree, I don't know if he will or not, although I lean towards yes and I also respect one's right to their own opinion.
But on the same hand, if I don’t agree with that opinion and if that person is trying to force that opinion on mean in a small doll with wild brightly colored haired manner, it gets a little annoying.

I'm talking about the Mavericks who since the 2006
collapse had a certain stink around them.
Losing in the first round.
losing to lower seed teams
losing to inexperience teams.
again how many people felt the Blazers were going to win the series just because it was the Mavericks.
Hell the game where Brandon Roy had a career playoff game people said “well these are the mavericks we know and love.”
again the Mavericks though different players, different coaches and even a different acting mark cuban were still judge based on their past performances.
My lil man.....can't tell me god don't exist.

It certainly didn't change Kidd's preception of them when he demanded their or Lakers. It didn't change Dirk's mind about resigning when he could have left for a plethora of strong teams this past offseason.
Players want to play for the Mavericks, some upset special playoff series and underachieving did not change that.
by vincecarter4pres on Jul 10, 2011 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions
what did that have to do
with someone making their judgments on past events.
dude said he is optimistic but not with the Nets though.
again the underachieving had a demon they needed to exorcise same way Lebron has one now.
Again until proven wrong people will feel a certain way about him.
Again after the Nets signed Travis Outlaw. I saw this said many times. “the nets have never made a huge off season signing” it was almost as to give an excuse as to say why the Travis Outlaw situation happen again.
Using past events to either make judgments or justify what has or is happening

I realize that's hyperbole but the optimism at hand here is not nearly that over the top
People think Deron is going to resign. As NI wonderfully displayed with this post there is certainly reason to believe that. The pessimists on the other hand are saying that Deron’s a goner even though there has been virtually no evidence to point to that.

So when I do I just want to make sure. You didn’t never say the Chicago Bulls would rather have Yi than Noah.
You never said that Krstic would be an all star. because of the 19 and 9 averages he put up against Shaq in the 2005 playoffs as a rookie????
You never said Kevin Durant would opt out and would give consideration to nets after being in small market okc??
You are right my comments are online difference is I always stand by.
I don’t change opinions just because the situation does.
Remember how high you were on Melo and people who didn’t feel he was worth all that Denver was asking for was silly.

it's barely skepticism
there is NOTHING that Williams has said SINCE FEBRUARY to lead any reasonable person to assume that he will not resign…as long as the team improves.
It is a very arrogant position
who profess this as a realism believe somehow they own some secret truth, some special powers.
I laid out EVERY interview I could find to show the consistency of what HE has said.
As Broussard wrote, Williams spoke highly of the Nets organization (and knowing how interviews work, I would assume that Williams told him much more than he reported. If indeed Williams had said something negative, even off the record, Broussard would not be writing what he wrote.

I don’t care if he says “keep my options open”, “I hate all teams that end in consonants”, or “Nets are my #1 choice”.
All that matter is actions, and he can’t make any now. Neither can the Nets to improve this team until there’s a new CBA.
All about new CBA. Although that said, I’d hate to think he’s staying only because it’s financially better for him.

Wow, a thread full of pointless bickering and trolling
Until the new CBA is finished, and Deron actually signs an extension, which I am about 70% sure he will, there’s no point to scrutinize every single thing that comes out of his mouth.
Only thing that will be of substance is the words said after it’s announced that he’s signed an extension with the team
til then, I will hope that we hit it big with our two main FA options, Nene and Tayshaun Prince when things resume. I really think that those two are our best bets to infuse some umph into our starting 5.
