Vecsey: Mitchell Won't Return
Peter Vecsey's New York Post column is syndicated, appearing in newspapers around the world...often with more news items in the expanded, syndicated version. Last weekend's column included one item of interest to Nets fans: "Sources say Sam Mitchell will not return to the Nets to assist Avery Johnson..."
Mitchell has been traveling in Canada the last two weeks, selling local officials and businessmen on the viability of the new National Basketball League, looking like the leading candidate for commissioner of the NBL, the David Stern of Canada. Vecsey's expanded column also notes that two NBA assistants, Dave Joerger of Memphis and Reggie Theus of Minnesota, may be looking for work. If Mitchell goes leave, it would mean Avery Johnson's top two assistants won't be returning. Larry Krystkowiak has already signed on with the University of Utah.

Yeah really bummed
That we missed out on Messina.
Maybe Avery threw a stink about bringing on a possible replacement for him.
Or maybe he just preferred L.A.
Who knows?
I'm curious about the Messina love tho
Have you guys seen him coach lol, know his strengths and weaknesses? I haven’t

Yeah Frank, who's been shot down every time so far
He was a horrible coach. I recall NI saying he would be a head coach very very soon after getting fired.
Nada.

the team defense kept getting worse and worse and worse while the offense stayed in the same stagnant place

Mitchell didn't seem to do much as an assistant....
Might as well give him a chance to be a head coach somewhere….

No problem
Mike Budenholzer
Mario Elie
Budenholzer is a terrific assistant for San Antonio, very good defensively and very smart. Elie is good as well

Dave Joerger
Is mentioned by Vecsey as being pursued by unidentified teams. He is a rising star in NBA ranks. Won D-League twice.

Not worried about changing of Agents
D-will needs someone thats ready to take his career to the next level, and ready for the big stage and has more contacts for him, to get him the big market love. The assistant coaching thing is not that big a deal Proky has the money we will get some solid minds in here I’m sure.

Atronic
I agree 100% with both points
I would hope you would support who we are. Not, who we are not. Coach Norman Dale "Hoosiers"
So who so we have left? Loyer & Barrise only?
Can we get Hakeem as our bigs coach + 2 other future coach candidates for us?

CAA is currently winning the NBA Finals
The biggest thing in that source is that Deron wants to bring stars to Brooklyn. That’s an AMAZING tidbit of news.

Not yet lol

Yup
He has been wanting to get in Proky’s circle for the longest you can’t blame them. But if it is true then they see the potential of Brooklyn as well which pushes the momentum even more in our favor.

So where are the individuals
that thought that Deron firing his old agent meant he was leaving and we had to trade him?
i mean if anyone can control him
its avery johnson, right?
wait, or just send him down to the d-league?
wait, or just trade him for 2 first and an ex-laker?
i bet it's more about DWILL
going with a firm that is tops in entertainment/endorsement opportunities.
smart move.
imagine something extremely witty here
is it me or is anyone else somewhat happy these assistants are leaving?
first. the avery rep continues to grow. i’m shocked how everyone jumped ship for another job after one year with him
B. what did our assistants do? hump is the only person that showed real progress without overall regression in his strength. and he was in his contract year spike
III. i’m glad we are cleaning house once again. this year was just a stopgap to better the foundation

I doubt
Mitchell ever planned to stay very long in any assistant position. Probably a gig that was available at the time so he took it, but having been a head coach he most likely didn’t plan on making a career of being a second fiddle type guy. The Nets staff probably expected this too.
"A little boy went out to play. When he opened his door, he saw the world. As he passed through the doorway, he caused a reflection. Evil was born. Evil was born, and followed the boy."
Two things
1) we have not heard anyone is leaving due to Avery. They are leaving because of opportunities being presented to them. No need to manufacture things that aren’t there. Like it or not Avery is definitely here next year so why start creating some drama around the franchise when it’s not there. Not good for recruiting or stability. I don’t have any strong opinions about Avery one way or the other. I think this season with D-Will will give us a better view of his abilities.
2) I think they should look into bringing Eddie Jordan in as an assistant. Our offense was one of the weakest things last year and he can really help with ball movement and fast break. The team needs to learn how to make lesser skilled players more efficient through ball movement until they get more alpha dogs on offense.
no. eddie jordan and that princeton offense
it was terrible in philly and even more dreadful in washington. i do not want him on the coaching bench

not suggesting they make him the head coach.
