Shumpert Big Name in Next Workouts

The Nets will have 12 players in for workouts on Monday and Tuesday but none are among the big names among the 2011 Draft.  Only one of the 12 is listed in the first round of Draft Express' latest mock draft, 6'5" Georgia Tech combo guard Iman Shumpert, at #22. Two others, small forwards Travis Leslie of Georgia and Jereme Richmond of Illinois, are listed in top half of the second round.

Here's the breakdown: On Monday, the Nets will look at Leslie; Richmond; Chaisson Allen, 6'4" shooting guard from  Northeastern, LaceDarius Dunn, 6'4" shooting guard from Baylor; Lavoy Allen, 6'9" power forward from Temple and Jamel McLean, 6'8" power forward from Xavier of Ohio.

On Tuesday, it will be Shumpert, who's fast moving up many draft boards; Xavier Silas, 6'5" point guard from Northern Illinois; DeAndre Liggins, 6'6" defense-minded shooting guard from Kentucky; Corey Fisher and Antonio Pena, a 6'4" shooting guard and a 6'8" power forward from Villanova; and Alex Tyus, a 6'8" power forward from Florida.

I like Shumpert’s potential and upside in the second round thought. At 6’5" he can play either guard spot and his measurable are off the charts. At the combine he did 18 reps on the bench press and has an absolutely ridiculous 42" vertical leap. His offensive game needs a ton of work, and I doubt he’ll ever be a reliable offensive player, but he could develop into a lock down defender, which this team badly needs. Also, the same argument many applied to Favors can be applied to Shumpert. Anthony Morrow, Will Bynum, Jarrett Jack, Chris Bosh, and Thaddeus Young were all coached by Hewitt at Georgia Tech. All have been vastly superior in the pros than they were in college.

Jamel McLean

“… 6’8” power forward from Xavier of Ohio…"

Can never really go wrong taking a big from Xavier. Those guys seem to always be solid in the pros.

If Leslie is available at 27…then he’s a must IMO.

He’s the best athlete in the draft.

I like Leslie a lot, but I think we can buy another 2nd rounder and he'll be available then.

"Leslie, best athlete" ?

I get real nervous with the “best athlete available” option.

How about the “best player available” !

I’m a fan of Travis Leslie too.

by Coach Joe on Jun 3, 2011 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Is he even the best athlete in this workout? That may go to Shumpert.

Anyway, I’m not interested in athletes. I’ve seen enough of them between the Jets (Vernon Gholston, etc.) and the Nets (Terrence Williams, etc.). I’m more interested in basketball players. Leslie’s nothing special as a prospect, way too small to log any minutes at SF in the NBA, doesn’t really shoot as well as you’d like at SG.

Ever get the feeling that the names "leaked" now...

will not be the same names drafted later ?

Most of the name being mentioned for the Nets are guards or small forwards

So this leads me to believe one of these three European SF/PF will be drafted by the Nets..

1) Nikola Vucevic

2) Davis Bertans

3) Nikola Mirotic

How come mock drafts have the "smart" teams drafting these guys...

San Antonio, Dallas, Boston etc…while we draft Reggie Jackson ?

Shumpert

Might not have the best basketball IQ. To be fair, it’s very hard to judge players coming out of Paul Hewitt’s system, because Paul Hewitt was a terrible basketball coach, and he let Shumpert do whatever he wanted out there. That said, he could be another Tyreke Evans.

Does anybody remember Terrico White, from last year's Draft..?

Me neither..Well, Shumpert is this Draft’s Terrico White, except unlike White, he can’t shoot to save his Pro prospects..Recall D.FAV?
Yeah well, Shumpert was the point guard who somehow found a way to keep one of the top bigs in College Basketball from getting the ball. Remember Ben Uzoh? He’s better than Shumpert, and he has a year of NBA experience on “Shump”..

BTW..
Josh Selby or bust.

i remember terrico white. him and that puerto rican dude at ole miss were sick

its just that ole miss went through a slew of injuries. i remember terrico tore his acl his sophomore year but he still kept his explosiveness. now terrico can barely shoot beyond 20 feet so i assume shumpert has the offensive polish of thabo sefolosha in his chicago days

Can't stand Shumpert.

I watched tons of GT games back when I was scouting Favors and Shumpert is a horrendous basketball player. He’s like the homeless man’s J.R. Smith.

Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
