A trade that could actually get rid of Outlaw...

I know the thought of a team actually taking Outlaw is ridiculous, and I know this can't happen till after the new CBA is signed, but hear me out on this trade:

Nets Trade: Travis Outlaw, 3mil

Pistons Trade: Rip Hamilton

The Pistons right now have a big logjam at PG/SG. They just drafted Brandon Knight to be their future PG, where they already have Rodney Stuckey, Will Bynum, and Terrico White. Chances are they will shift Rodney Stuckey over to SG, which means that Rip Hamilton and Ben Gordon are backing him up. The Pistons would be paying their backup SG's over 24 million next year. Looking at their SF position right now, Tayshaun Prince and Dajuan Summers are free agents. They have Austin Daye, and they just drafted Kyle Singler. Needless to say they need more depth. Outlaw might have 2 more years on his contract than Hamilton's, but that won't make as big a difference to the Pistons because they won't be ready to compete for a while anyway. That will give them a nice expiring contract when they are ready to compete (to think that Outlaw could actually be a valuable trade asset!). If they did this deal they would be saving 4.3 mil in the long run (which would actually be 7.3mil if Proky throws 3mil into the deal), while also getting a young SF and clearing that logjam at the guard positions.

Sounds pretty good for them, so why would the Nets do this deal then? First of all, I think Hamilton could provide a wealth of knowledge to the two SG's we have right now. Some of the criticism towards our draft pick Brooks last night was that he was a ball hog and that isn't going to fly with Dwill. He needs to learn how to play off the ball and come off screens. Well it just so happens that Hamilton has made a career out of moving without the ball in his hands. He also provides veteran leadership and he knows how to win, something that can really help a young team like ours. Him mentoring Brooks could be the best thing for his career, which means it could be the best thing for us. One thing this might prohibit us from doing right now is spending more money if we think we can sign Dwight Howard next summer. But I think it will make a big difference in the long run.

Thinking farther down the road, say if our first season in Brooklyn we do have Deron Williams and Dwight Howard along with Rip. At that point we have run out of cap space and need to get creative in order to get better. Rip could actually be a valuable trade piece because of his big expiring contract that year. A team that is trying to shed salary and rebuild might have a good player with a long term contract that they are trying to get out of. Just an example, but maybe someone like Andrea Bargnani of the Raptors becomes available. He would be perfect to pair with Howard, and would add to that international appeal Prokhorov and Yormark are looking for. Hamilton, along with maybe draft picks/money, could land us a nice player as a result of a salary dump. If you look after that first season in Brooklyn, Farmar, Morrow, and Petro's contracts all end. Which essentially means we can then add depth to go along with Williams, Howard, Brooks, and maybe someone of Bargnani's caliber.

I know some will say "we need to get better NOW, this is the year we need to impress DWill or else he leaves...doing this trade will take away from our cap space now." I don't think it really is like that. I think he realizes its going to take a little time, we aren't going to make it to the finals next year. Not only that, but if he does want to play with Howard, there aren't many places that will be able to sign both of them. Especially with the allure of opening a brand new arena in one of the biggest cities in the world. I think we are in the driver's seat here, and this deal will only make us better in the long run.

Detroit isn't going to be able to get much for him right now considering his age and contract

They essentially get an asset in a few years (Outlaw’s expiring contract) when they are ready to compete. That could give them that last piece they are looking for when Knight and Monroe are ready. They could keep Rip and trade his expiring contract in a year and a half, but they won’t be ready to compete for a title yet. They also even out their depth chart a bit for the next few years.

Not so sure

Most playoff bound teams were waiting for the Pistons to buy him out prior to the trade deadline last year. I’m sure the Piston’s mindset now is that they would like to unload him for whatever they can once the CBA is settled. Furthermore, Hamilton has openly said he felt betrayed by the organization and was one of the main culprits that triggered the mutiny against John Kuester last season. There is no doubt the Pistons want to rebuild. While Outlaw may not be the ideal trade piece, a draft pick or young player along with Outlaw may do it.

I could see it happening if we add Damion James or dare I say MarShon Brooks and $3 million cash..

Detroit needs to dump this guy and he’s being a dick about where he’ll go, he literally vetoed the trade to Cleveland at the deadline, saying he would never report or play for them.

They don’t exactly have a ton of options.

Outlaw’s contract is gross, but you’re basically spreading out Hamilton’s money over 4 years, which also frees up cap space to resign guys this offseason.

Add in a legit prospect, even if both are B rate ones, I don’t see them getting much better.

Of course there is always the obvious that a team could offer an expiring, but will that team be one Rip will agree to play for?

We know he’ll welcome us with open arms…

Untradeable

No one is going to take Outlaw off our hands, we are stuck with him. Thanks Thorn!

Off season PLAN FTW

Here’s my dream plan…maybe its just that a pipe dream..but we’ll see.

SO- The drafting of Marshon Brooks makes the idea of trading Morrow a little bit more palatable…This is the plan.

Sign JR Smith ( high risk, high reward-but thats life isnt it?)
Sign AK47 ( To play the 3)

Front load both of these contracts…as much as possible to have a cap favorable situation.

Then you can package….Farmar,Morrow,Humphries, either Djames or OutLulz and then whatever picks/ cash to make the trade even for Josh Smith, Pachulia and whatever scrubs they toss at us..Hopefully this is possible capwise even after the new CBA

So you end up with…

Dwilll/gaines/uzoh
Smith/Brooks/Mario West
Ak47/Outlaw or Djames/ D leaguer or undraftee
J Smoove/ B Wright/ AK47
Lopez// J Williams….

I like the trade

for Smith. But the JR signing is a bad move. We dont need him. Im content with Morrow and Brooks at the 2 spot. Hopefully Brooks surprises and can actually contribute. I would to see him show some flashes of greatness to solidify himself as the starter in the future.

JR is garbage.

Farmar, Djames, Hump with the Rockets 1st round pick next season for Josh Smith sounds reasonable to me. Farmar and Hump would contribute to their team.

I like AK47 but only if other options arent available.

well that settles that...

Alright sounds like the consensus is that JR Smith is not worth the headache…

Would you guys prefer a trade for Josh Smith or Michael Beasley? with the same package..

I don't know if I missed an update..

But didn’t the owners propose a clause to remove 1 contract from the payroll? Has this been completely dismissed?

i'm saying you guys write this stuff like a facebook message

you gotta indent. use bullets, bold, italics

use proper spacing. make the words jump out

when you type up a bunch of words like this on and on with no change in font or spacing it becomes hard on the eyes to want to read through it without getting lost in the words. i just typed this sentence to show how ineffective this style can be. this does not grab attention to the eyes it only makes it worse. and when you start off with a bad proposal that already discourages me from reading. you could provide a link to show detroit’s financial troubles in the middle of selling ownership. again i doubt you are enjoying reading this paragraph like this. detroit is not going to take on more money or extended deals. they are trying to clear up the cap space and having gordon and charlie v makes it highly unlikely they would take travis back especially since charlie v, daye, jerebko, maxiell already have the forward positions occupied. get my point now

its not fun to the eyes with wall of words

see how easier it is to read when you use bullets or spacing/indentation like a formal essay/resume

Throw in a second round pick or two

And that probably makes it a fair deal. But since we drafted Brooks and the Nets organization expects him to contribute right away, I’m not sure where Rip fits.
