Jordan Williams

Hey everyone.  I've been a long time follower of the site, and decided to make a little fanpost of our 2nd round pick, Jordan Williams.  I've been following MD basketball for quite some time now, and I wanted to share a few thoughts about our new member.

First off, the kid was barely recruited out of high school.  Being from UConns backyard, never received an offer to play for them even though he was Mr.Connecticut his senior year.  I believe he was barely top 100.  Due to an academic eligibility to one of the upper classmen, he got a chance to start early on for the Terps and never gave up his starting position even when the teammate became eligible again.  He kept improving throughout the year, put up 20+ pts and 10+ boards in one of the NCAA tournament games.  I believe he ended up with around a 10 pt/9 reb average, finishing as a runner up to Derrick Favors for ACC Rookie of the year.

This past year, he became the first option for the Terps.  Having graduated 3 seniors (including Greivis Vasquez), he had to carry his team, resulting in a 17 pt and 12 reb avgs.  Although the numbers vastly improved, being the first option wasn’t a good look for JWill, and many times when he got the ball, no one else got any touches.  His free throw shooting is another area of concern. However, while his range is limited, he has very good hands/soft touch, and he will be able to finish around the basket. Although every scouting report says he is overweight (which he is), he had no problem running the break

IMHO, he was the most efficient his freshman year as a role player, going after offensive putbacks and Greivis getting the ball to him in the right places, which I have no doubt DWill will be able to do.  He has played with a chip on his shoulder going from a barely recruited high schooler to All ACC Rookie Team to All ACC First team.  He is a willing worker (as evidenced by almost 40 lbs lost since HS), and I'm sure being drafted in the 2nd round is another reason for him to prove all the doubters wrong.  Anyway, i think I went on too long, if anyone has any questions about JWill, I will try my best to answer.
