From Jersey Shore to Jersey Sure: Who Knew Brooks from N.J.?

Photo

MarShon Brooks (not Marshon) thought he'd be taken at #15 by the Pacers. So did the Nets. That's where they had him on their in-house Draft Board. But Kawhi Leonard had fallen out of the top 10 and the temptation proved too great for Larry Bird and so Brooks kept falling and falling until Billy King scooped him up in a trade with Boston at #25.

No matter. After switching from Celtic to Net headgear, he revealed not only that he's happy to be a Net, but that he's Jersey Shore boy, having been born in Long Branch before moving to Stone Mountain, GA. He's the 14th (and quite possibly the last) New Jersey native to join the hometown club.

"It’s a great opportunity. I was born here. I have a lot of family in the state. I’m looking forward to helping them," Brooks said of the Nets, offering to name the Nets starting lineup, but noting which player he hopes to work closest with.  "They have a really good point guard in Deron Williams. It’s going to make life easy for me. I’m just looking forward to helping him."

In his ESPN chat, Brooks also talked about wanting to meet two others in the Nets' organization, Jay-Z and Beyonce', "Two people I listen to. I look forward to meeting them. Especially Beyonce."

Regarding the Knicks, it makes no sense to take someone who would only reduce Landry Fields' minutes.

Is it possible Knicks are going to try again to get Steve Nash by offering a package including Landry Fields + Billups?

by jerry25 on Jun 24, 2011 8:54 AM EDT reply actions

Billups may be damaged goods, even though he is younger than Nash.

If I was Phoenix, I would need evidence that Billups will be 100% before considering trade.

by jerry25 on Jun 24, 2011 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions

They won't care if Billups can play or not

The only reason they would consider him is because his contract expires. Them trading Nash means the end of their even slightest dreams of the playoffs. They will need rebuilding pieces

No matter who they offer

I actually think the Delfino comparison is okay with him

He’s a shot creator. He can score in isolation, that’s the one thing we know about him. His jump shot does not seem that great though. More of a streaky shooter rather than a knockdown shooter.

Perhaps… a Manu ginobili early in his career (manu did start off in the NBA with a shaky jump shot) but without the defense

by muwu on Jun 24, 2011 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

for the offense i could do delfino, thats why i said poor man peja, emphasis on the poor

but thats about it. delfino is a very underrated defender, as is ginobili. bojan is strictly offense right now.

He is more like Sasha than anyone would care to accept...

And unfortunately he as athletic or (less even) as Sasha. But Bojan is more creative driving the basketball to the hoop and may prove to be a more efficient shooter— they go hand in hand once you learn how to exploit what your defender is giving you, so I would even expect Sasha to be a better slasher one day if he could hit one of his 15 shot attempts a game. Either way, its a good pick if only to get some veteran-like offense off the bench at the wings for cheap.

Let's get real here

Marshon Brooks has talent, but it’s not likely he’s much more than Nick Young or Jordan Crawford.

I predict he will have a 40+ point game next year, causing everyone to go gaga over him regardless of other faults. Much like Nick Young and Jordan Crawford.

He’s got talent but I think his very best year ever is something like… 17-3-3

Question to pose to the esteemed members of this site/board.....

Since we acquired an elite scorer in marshon brooks, and also already possess a deadly 3 point shooter in anthony morrow…..assuming we feel that we are locked up in the 2 guard position where do we go from here as far as using some cap space……How much does this change things…..i think we can all stop arguing about jr smith, nick young, marcus thornton etc. (barring a trade involving morrow)
Do we spend big bucks on a 3, get a backup 4 and go over the cap to resign the hump…..do we sign a big time 4 such as a nene and a lesser 3….what are your opinions…..because assuming we are confident with our 2 guards as they stand right now, things may have changed dramatically in the free agent market.

but if he's gonna play the three he has to stretch the floor

gotta make the defense honest

and i believe this year he toned back on his long range shooting.

just like atl: they know j-smoove can play the three but in the natural flow of offense when you have an established low post scorer(horford, lopez) the sf is going to end up with open looks from the perimeter

and we heard more groans than a skinemax flick from the phillips arena in the playoffs this year when j-smoove took a jumper.

He's alright from three.

He shot about 35% in the 09-10 season and is at 33.8% for his career.

He’s not a zero from three and is young so he can still improve.

I wouldn't hold my breath on him shooting threes

Improving his midrange game a bit yes, but by much I don’t think so. He is who he is. He’s Josh Smith without the massive steals and blocks numbers and less athletic. He has his uses, but isn’t some homerun. He won’t perform well every night, but he’ll be good every other night

i understand but thats if the nets play fast

and with lopez on the floor idk how fast this team can play

he is at his best when he can get a board and fly down the court for an easy bucket

i agree he is a great at-the-rim finisher but one of the nets problem was being unable to create perimeter shots and stretch the floor. hence why morrow got bottled up so much the second half of the season

i wouldnt mind him being the starting three and then moving to small-ball 4 and then sign another backcourt scorer/shooter to keep the defense honest

Actually, looking at our rotation, we will have a young SF in Damion James that will need minutes to develop. Thaddeus Young still needs some extra time to develop himself. Outlaw is even still developing into his role on this team. I actually think, with the pieces we have we might be better off going for Tayshaun Prince.

we were discussing this at my house last night during the draft…..

And it makes even more sense now that we walked away with Marshon Brooks (to pair with Morrow at the 2).

I wouldn’t be surprised if once Phoenix waives VC – that the Nets resign him to be that veteran presence for the next 2 years….to close out NJ and open Brooklyn. Considering he is going to get paid a lot of money by Phoenix to waive him – and his comments about the Nets – I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take a minimum deal or $2m a year to come to NJ on a 2 year deal. Adds a big time professional to help mentor the younger guys – and would be a very good player to “coach up” MarShon Brooks over the next couple of years.

by Ryan243 on Jun 24, 2011 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

And I have a feeling that AK47 will also be coming to the Nets on a 2-3 year contract – due to his ties to Proky and to DWill.

I am not a huge AK47 fan – but adding another veteran presence (and one with ties to DWill) is not a bad organizational strategy.

by Ryan243 on Jun 24, 2011 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t Deron Williams openly complain about AK47’s defensive effort and toughness while in Utah, or am I mis-remembering some internet chatter I heard a ways back?

Could very well be…..I never paid attention to anything in Utah in the past.

I would prefer to see a healthy Damion James get some big minutes this year at the 3 spot. The kid has the talent to be a very good player down the road. I remember seeing him live at Coaches vs Cancer his frosh year at Texas and he looked much better than Durant that early in the year.

I agree 100%

Thaddeus Young is still a role player. He still needs to develop into a legitimate starter. Same goes with Thornton (since so many seem to be in love with the guy as well)

A 3yr deal for someone like Prince, who can defend, is a veteran, can spread the floor and run with DWill makes the most sense for a team that is trying to get better at defense and at the same time score. I would be bold to say that the Nets should get both Prince and AK47 (with AK backing up Hump at the 4). DJames and Outlaw will be the reserves, and you have a very deep bench. The only thing left will be getting a legit backup C for Brook instead of Petro, and this team is playoff bound contending with the top teams of the East next year.

People seem to think things translate directly

I don’t care how good of a scorer you were in college or in Europe, the NBA is a whole different ball game. The players guarding you are completely different, it’s like facing college PFs on defense for em

by muwu on Jun 24, 2011 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

the only thing that translates directly

is defense and rebounding if you maintain the work ethic

how many guys came in as defenders and still around who eventually developed a jumper(e.g. afflalo, ibaka)

or hustle hard rebounders like millsap

scorers come and go. some guys are naturally good. other guys have to work hard at it. otherwise the leading scorer of every big name school would have a solid nba career

Everyone talks about his scoring but check again. He pulled down 7 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and 1.5 stls thanks to that freakish length. He has all the tools to be a very good defender.

The Nets definitely need a big man in FA

We have 2 rotation big men (if Hump re-signs). Petro is not worth playing, Williams is a rookie. We desperately need someone to provide interior defense.

At SG, I think we can stand pat a little bit for now. If it looks like Outlaw is still the same old Outlaw, we’ll need a SF. But maybe we should give it one more year.

So that’s the number 1 thing on my shopping list in FA, the best defensive bench big man. I don’t need a necessarily starting caliber guy if Hump is around.

From Tom Ziller
UPDATE
2011 NBA Draft Grades: Nets Flutter About, Pick Up MarShon Brooks

The New Jersey Nets couldn’t have been expected to pick up impact player with the No. 27 pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, but thanks to some slippage for a touted prospect, the team came out looking pretty smooth.

Gained: MarShon Brooks, Bogan Bogadanovic, Jordan Williams.

Gave up: Future second-round pick, cash.

Synopsis: Brooks was widely expected to be off of the board at No. 15 to the Pacers, but Indiana had Kawhi Leonard available and worked out a deal with the San Antonio Spurs for George Hill. That began Brooks’ freefall into the 20s; the Nets saw him at No. 25, offered up a future second-round pick to the Boston Celtics to move up a couple picks and nailed it. Well done.

I’m not sure Brooks ever belonged all the way up at No. 15 — he’s a volume scorer, and I can get those at the dollar store — but at No. 27? That’ll work just fine.

The Nets bought Bogdanovic; he’ll apparently remain in Turkey for one season and then jump to the Brooklyn Nets. (Some are skeptical he’ll come over that soon.) Williams so vexed Maryland coach Gary Williams that the legend resigned. So he’s … something.

Grade: B+.

Williams is a good kid who had some bad advice. He will be fine. He has tons of post moves and has quick ups. He is an excellent rebounder and knows he belongs in the paint.

Read what Chad Ford had to say last month about Williams...

ESPN’s Chad Ford unveiled his second mock draft yesterday, and for Connecticut high school hoops fans, the name going to the Celtics should ring pretty familiar.

Ford has the Celtics taking Torrington native and Maryland sophomore Jordan Williams at the No. 25 spot, writing, “The Celtics miss Kendrick Perkins, who was drafted (by Memphis) late in the first round of the 2003 draft. Williams could be another potential sleeper. He is big and physical and was one of the best rebounders in college basketball this past season. If he can stay in the sort of shape he displayed in Las Vegas, he could be a steal at this juncture in the draft.”

When he came into MD as a Freshman he had some baby fat, but in his Sophomore year he was in much better shape. Now we’re hearing he dropped another 20lbs. It doesn’t sound like his weight has been fluctuating. More like once he got into a serious program he’s only shown improvement.

Looking forward to see Brooks play..

Based on his reaction to being drafted, his interviews that I’ve watched, and some of the comparisons being made, I think we got a really nice 2 guard who will definitely end up starting sometime this season.

Listening to Chad Ford and Ryan Rusillo’s podcast this morning, both agreed that he modeled his game after Kobe, who is damn fine player to model your game after. Plus, the kid is smart enough not to compare himself to Kobe, instead saying Jamal Crawford, so he’s not that crazy. I really like this pick.

Only reason I see him starting..

Only reason I see him potentially starting is Morrow’s foot speed. Brooks won’t really have to make hard decisions because he’ll play off the ball. Draftexpress had him averaging 1.7 points per attempt on unguarded shots. I think D.Will will be able to get him a couple unguarded shots. =)

by viridus on Jun 24, 2011 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Actually isn't off ball movement one of his question marks? We don't know how he'll adapt to not having the ball since he never did it in college
Playing with the ball in his hands so often and having free reign to take shots whenever and wherever he wanted, Brooks didn’t do a ton of off-ball movement at Providence, with just 6.7% of his possessions coming off cuts and 1.2% of his possessions coming around screens according to Synergy. No team is likely to run their offense through Brooks in the pros (and if they do, definitely not nearly to the extent Providence did), so adapting to get more shots in that manner will be important.

I feel like that’s one of the easiest things to learn. It’s like running routes as a wide receiver. It mind boggling to time and time again see the best players in the world struggle to simply add moving without the ball to their repertoire.

by Coach Joe on Jun 24, 2011 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

AKA LeBron and Wade

I guess it’s just that they’ve tailored their skills to on the ball moves like crossovers and dribble moves. They don’t know what to do when they don’t have a ball to dribble, unlike big men. They don’t know what to do when they can’t shake their man with a crossover or dribble move anyore

by muwu on Jun 24, 2011 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s all upstairs with a lot of these guys. All they need to do is run, work hard and follow the shapes the coach draws up at practice. It sounds like kindergarten.

by Coach Joe on Jun 24, 2011 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess they can't follow because they've been following their own judgement for so long

When you’re an isolation type off the dribble scorer, it’s instinct and your own judgement rather than plays

by muwu on Jun 24, 2011 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I think

I think main reason Lebron and Wade aren’t great off the ball is because they’ve never developed confidence in their outside shooting. This kid can shoot.

But, yeah, moving off the ball is difficult and he’ll definitely have to learn how to do it, though I think he can because of his shot. If everyone could catch and shoot off the screen like Ray Allen, then he why wouldn’t everyone be doing it?

by viridus on Jun 24, 2011 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

MarShon Brooks doesn’t have that ridiculous athleticism like Wade and Lebron. I think the fact that he needs to pick and choose his spots more and not rely on otherworldy athleticism will help him learn to develop more of an all around game. If that means moving without the ball to put the ball in the bucket, I think he will do it.

by Coach Joe on Jun 24, 2011 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

True. However...
Doing the majority of his damage offensively with this perimeter jump shot, Brooks is highly capable both off the dribble and spotting up, though he’s far more consistent with the latter. When spotting up, Brooks has outstanding form, boasting a high and quick release along with excellent balance, though these opportunities are rare given the role he plays in his team’s offense. Of the 234 jump shots Brooks took in the half court setting according to Synergy this season, just 27 were of the unguarded, catch-and-shoot variety, but he scored a lethal 1.7 points per shot on those attempts.

If his BBIQ is so high...

you would think he could have led Providence to a few more wins in his college career. The guy never made a NCAA tournament and had losing season his last 2 years at Providence. I cannot believe people here think he may be the next Kobe…lol.

by Pawley on Jun 24, 2011 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he has a high BBIQ at all

His shot selection leaves a lot to be desired and he turns the ball over way too much, let alone for someone who is not a playmaker.

by Andres B on Jun 24, 2011 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

David Thorpe:

Does he really resemble Kobe, the iconic scoring guard? Yes, but not in most of the ways that matter most, and that is the problem.

Multiple men with trained eyes, including Bryant’s current trainer, Tim Grover, and Chad Ford have seen “a little bit” of Kobe when they watch Brooks play. I also saw things that connected the two of them: big hands that palm the ball like it’s a sponge and long arms that make it tough for a defender to get at the ball when Brooks is in motion or as he nears the rim for a layup. And some of his general movements as a player look strikingly similar to things we’ve seen from Kobe hundreds of times.

To be fair, Brooks has more in common with Kobe than just similar long limbs and movements. He’s a scorer, pure and simple, and he’s always in attack mode. Brooks had the ball in his hands more than almost any college player this season but averaged just 2.5 assists. I’m not convinced Brooks sees the game well, unlike Kobe, who chooses to shoot often but knows where to pass at all times.

Brooks does share something with Kobe as an offensive player that is not so good — he takes bad shots. No player I’ve studied this season had worse shot selection than Brooks, who took 197 3-pointers, just 22 fewer than the number of free throws he earned. As a comparison, Kobe shot at least twice as many free throws as 3-pointers each season from his second NBA season to his eighth. For his college career, Brooks attempted 475 3s (and made 33 percent) and 402 free throws. Kobe, even after many seasons in which his somewhat worn-out legs forced him to take a lot more 3s, has still never even come close to taking as many 3s as he has free throws made in any season. For his career, he’s made over 7,000 free throws and attempted 4,185 3s.

I have been very high on Brooks for a while.

I think he could be the best wing player in this draft. He is a proven scorer and has the potential to be a GREAT, not good, defender. He can block shots, gets steals, and rebounds extremely well for a guard. he is good in transition and is a very good iso player. I think he is also a hard worker since he got better every year in college and will keep that chip on his shoulder because he went so late.

He is ready to play now being a senior and dont be surprised if he is the starter opening day because he is that good.

I always find your insights informative.

by M I K E on Jun 24, 2011 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I give it an A. Given what we entered that draft with, we really couldn’t have done any better. Brooks at 25 is ridiculous. I expected him to be gone at 15 (if he even lasted that long), and then when Kawhi fell and Indy took him, I thought Brooks would go 16…then 17…then 18… you get the idea. Immediately fills a huge needed as a guy who can create his own shot. The man can flat out score. He’s got some holes in his game, but I think they’re very fixable. He doesn’t appear to me to be a selfish player, I think he was just forced to become that guy at Providence because nobody else can score. His defensive ability intrigues me. I don’t know if he truly just didn’t want to play defense at providence, or again, he didn’t out of necessity (needed all of his energy for offense). He’s got intriguing tools with a great wingspan, and good shot blocking ability. Averaged over a steal and over a block per game. His blocking ability reminds me of Wade a little bit. Obviously he’s not the defender Wade is, and I’d be stunned if he ever becomes that, but he does have that one aspect of his game in common. I don’t ever expect Brooks to be a great or even particularly good defender, but down the line I don’t think he’ll be a liability.

Admittedly I don’t know too much about Bogdanovich, but it’s a no risk pick. If he doesn’t pan out or doesn’t come over, what’s the loss? One million Prokhorov dollars? That’s about a $1.50 to him. I’ve heard comparisons ranging from Stojakovic to Delfino to Nachbar. If he turns out to be any of those players, I’m happy. No risk, seems like there will be a good reward.

Jordan Williams doesn’t seem like anything particularly special, and I don’t know if I buy the Carlos Boozer comparisons, I think he can be a quality role player for us. I would have preferred Harrelson, but Williams probably has more upside than Harrelson. I think he’ll be a guy who could potentially get us something like 8 and 6 off the bench, and that’s got it’s value. If the 2nd round, if you get a real NBA player, you made a good pick.

On June 29th, 2001, the New Jersey Nets and the Phoenix Suns agreed to a trade involving Stephon Marbury and Jason Kidd.

Brooks is more Jamal Crawford then Nick Young

He has that devestating hesitation dribble that helps him get his jumper off at will in isolation

From that Brooklyn Bound link.
I watched a Providence – Georgetown game earlier in the year (I know, I have no life) where Brooks just had "the look". I can’t explain it, but Brooks just carried himself in a way that you just knew he was going to be successful. Like just about every other game this season, Brooks put up 43 points against the Hoyas, but Providence still lost. But, Brooks was the real winner of the game. He showed me, and every other person watching that game, that MarShon Brooks could be a very good NBA player. I said in my Draft Preview that unless the Nets traded up they would not be able to get him, and this is for good reason. Brooks can finish at the hoop like few could in college basketball this season, and rebounds really well for a guard. He is a wing that will be able to play both sides of the ball well, and that is exactly what the Nets needed in this draft.

It would only take about .701% of the population of Brooklyn alone to fill the Barclays Center.

I'm very excited and happy the Nets traded for this young man

As King mentioned, the kid is an athlete, and he knows how to score point blank.

In addition, he has so much defensive potential, with his length and large wingspan. I hope Avery Johnson can help him in that regard.

I know playing next to Mr. Williams, a player that will set Brooks up for good shots, we’ll get to see a very talented player blossom in front of our very own eyes.

Can somone explain to me what's going to happen next?

I’ve been hearing that the last day of the CBA is June 30th? Is that correct?

If so, won’t there be all trades going down before then? like Josh Smith, Iguodala, Monta Ellis, Dwight Howard??

And when are we allowed to start offering to Free Agents. Can someone get the short term future in order for me…

by The Big Russian on Jun 24, 2011 11:52 AM EDT reply actions

Need a new collective bargaining agreement in place...

.. before any team can pursue free agents.

No one knows when the owners and the NBPA will come to an agreement, or how the terms of the new CBA will impact teams ability to pursue free agents.

You’ll have to wait and ask again when the new CBA is ratified.

Lou Williams, Monta Ellis, Jordan Crawford, Nick Young, they all have value in the league, and if any of them played D and toned down their shot selection they’d be really important players…

So if we bring Marshon into the right situation, and Avery and Deron get in his head, he seems like a good guy, I think he can be perfect for us.

Nets getting no respect on National programs.

Noone ever mentioned the Bojan to Nets trade on any program last night or even this AM.

Neither ESPN nor NBATV had any evaluation of Brooks to Nets.
ESPN only mentioned Brooks as a Celtic, and when it was learned he wasn’t going to the Celtics, they just shut up.

I didn’t hear the Nets mentioned on NBATV at all, and this AM no mention of Nets on ESPN First Take (shown on ESPN News). They only talk about the top players and top teams.

It is just as well though. Not many in the media have detailed knowledge of the Nets situation.

by jerry25 on Jun 24, 2011 12:28 PM EDT reply actions

NBATV did.

It was towards the end of their draft recap.

They said they liked his fit for NJ.

They thought he could help NJ on offense.

Jerry ... look at it objectively.

There are 30 teams in the NBA. The national networks don’t have time to go through each team effectively. There were plenty of teams that didn’t receive coverage (the Nets were one of them) and it’s just the nature of TV.

I’m not sure why so many Nets fans take it personal that the team doesn’t get national coverage. Much to the chagrin of the fan population, nobody cares about the Nets. There’s no reason for national broadcasts to waste time talking about the team. It’s completely understandable.

If you're interested, you can follow me @TokenNBR.

Anyone with knowledge of the Nets would have to agree that they well exceeded expectations.

I was in favor of trading for a 2012 pick so that it would increase the Nets assets to include in a big trade (such as for DHoward before the trade deadline).

However, by getting Bojan (for just cash and a future 2nd round pick), they essentially accomplished the same thing.
Bojan could be a mid 1st round pick if he were available in 2012. It normally would take a lot more that $3 million to buy such a pick.

A couple of the beat writers thought it might be possible to buy him out. They weren't sure.

Proky certainly has the money.

However, it appears that it wasn’t the Nets intention. Nets need to give minutes to Brooks, Morrow, DJames etc. to develop them first. Farmar should be playing some SG also.
Bojan just turned 22 and should be getting lots of PT in Europe to develop there. Meanwhile he is still a pretty valuable trade chip if he does well.

A pending lock-out would make it even wiser to keep him in Europe.

9:12 — The Knicks take 2-guard Iman Shumpert at no. 17 (huh?), followed by lusty boos from the Knicks fans in Newark, the obligatory shot of a confused Spike Lee, and David Stern blessing the pick by saying, “Iman is not with us tonight.” Ooooof. So to recap: Donnie Walsh made Landry Fields untouchable over Danilo Gallinari, then four months later, picked someone who plays the exact same position as Fields. Another savvy move by one of the classiest guys in sports! By the way, can someone loop every confused Spike Lee draft reaction on You Tube? Don’t we have enough for a 90-second clip at this point?

Can somone explain to me what's going to happen next?

I’ve been hearing that the last day of the CBA is June 30th? Is that correct?

If so, won’t there be all trades going down before then? like Josh Smith, Iguodala, Monta Ellis, Dwight Howard??

And when are we allowed to start offering to Free Agents. Can someone get the short term future in order for me…

by The Big Russian on Jun 24, 2011 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

alright

1) cba is expired june 30th
2)if no lockout free agency starts on july 1
3)i believe free agents can be signed starting july 5
and trades may go down before hand as there’s still a week before the lock out.

Jordan Williams will be fine

Remember Udonis Haslem at U of F? Dude was huuuuge, but was a beast on the glass, great touch, etc. Sound familiar? Jordan has been working his tail off and looks to be in solid shape right now…I think he can be a great backup 4 or 5 for the Nets

by smp369 on Jun 24, 2011 1:29 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Exactly...

I would rather get a realistic backup with the #36 pick In Jordan Williams, then reach for a player hoping that he becomes a star. We know Williams can rebound and with Deron getting him easy garbage points he might just be what we need at PF.

Ric Bucher saying Valciunas was best player in Draft

I don’t know where that comes from because just from watching the short clips of him and reading about him, he does’nt seem like he is superstar material.

by The Big Russian on Jun 24, 2011 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

He and Kanter and Irving have the most potential..

But remember Yi Jianliang was a “potential” pick too… Anyway Kanter and Irving are more proven than Jonas and have as much “potential”, so I don’t see how J. Valanciunas is a given to be the “best player” in the draft.

I would even say Kemba Walker or Kanter are the best prospects. They have skill and potential to get even better.

Kemba could even have a better career than John Wall

I saw him one on one against Wall and thought, wow two great players… id take Kemba today, maybe tomorrow John Wall will figure it out.. and sure Wall is more flashy, but I am talking about substance.

by Nets! on Jun 24, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't see this happening.

John Wall is on a whole different level than Kemba. Number one, Wall is an actual point guard. Let’s also not forget he is 6’4 and quicker than Kemba. Number two, Kemba is a 5’11 shooting guard who has to develop into a pg.

by netsareboss on Jun 24, 2011 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

OK, you cant say one player is their height without shoes on while the others height with his shoes on.

BOTH players with their shoes off:

Kemba 5’11.75 (basically my height, 6 feet)

John Wall 6’2.75 (basically half an inch taller than Devin Harris’ real height)..

So John Wall is only 2 inches taller than Kemba… Not 5 inches, what you were reporting.

Kemba is as fast as Wall. Kemba Jumps as high as Wall (or higher in some accounts).

by Nets! on Jun 24, 2011 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

So this other "different" level talk is mostly in your head.

And the pure point guard stuff is nonsense. Dude, if Kemba was on North Carolinas team they would have won! Kemba took a bunch of freshmen and a couple of sophmores to win EVERY tournament they played in. Can’t say that Wall is better just because he is fancier and travels all the time while getting 7 turnovers along with his 9 assists. Theres something called a big picture, Kemba would have made Cousins his best, Wall couldn’t. Kemba is a better point guard and shooter. The only thing Wall is better at is being taller.

by Nets! on Jun 24, 2011 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions

STOP

Kemba was drafted 9th in one of the worst drafts of all time. John wall was the #1 pick. If GM’s had to draft again, with Wall and Walker in same draft, every GM would take Wall over Walker. Kemba is a great player, but he is not on the same level as Wall.

“That’s why we’re bringing him in,” King said. “He’s a basketball player that knows how to put the ball in the hole and do a lot of things well on the court, and we were surprised and shocked that he was there.”

The Nets envision Brooks potentially playing in the same backcourt with superstar point guard Deron Williams, giving them a dynamic scoring duo in the backcourt. New Jersey ranked 28th in the NBA in scoring last season (94.2 ppg).

It would only take about .701% of the population of Brooklyn alone to fill the Barclays Center.

"It's kind of like the Garden. It's the same feel. It's special." - Deron Williams on the Barclays Center.

If you go to the link, they have a write up accompanying each player. So, who would you like to see for this team and/or Springfield?

On June 29th, 2001, the New Jersey Nets and the Phoenix Suns agreed to a trade involving Stephon Marbury and Jason Kidd.
On February 23rd, 2011, the New Jersey Nets and the Utah Jazz agreed to a trade involving Devin Harris and Deron Williams.
A new beginning. LETS GO NETS!

I’ll throw in a name not listed there, and admit my complete bias as a St. John’s student – DJ Kennedy, F. Tore his ACL at the end of the season, would have been drafted otherwise. Let him rehab in Springfield, he’s a hard worker, good defender, willing passer, can generate some offense. Not great at anything in particular, but he’s good at everything, and has shown a willingness to sacrifice for the sake of the team.

"We'll be the first really global team in the NBA. For me, being the first foreign owner, I want to do my best to invite all the fans for the team all over the world. I think the NBA is worldwide. But other teams [possess a] more local mentality. We are going to create and to build a global franchise to sell all around the world. I think I have a competitive advantage compared to other owners." - Mikhail Prokhorov

I always wanted Hansbrough on this team somehow.

He’s going to be a terrific pro. Just don’t know if there’s a spot for him with 3 PG’s under contract. I think I’d cut Gaines if I had to , he’s just that good. What scares me most is if a rival picks him up on the cheap.

Always liked Lighty too.

Although I can’t imagine two more different personalities.

Not even that. Majok was drafted specifically because they knew he’d never come over to the NBA. Dunno if you call that a stash. If they could, they would have simply skipped the pick.

One thing I can say about Brooks and Williams

Talent aside, they are CONFIDENT kids if you watch both interviews. Haven’t seen that on this team in a while.

by Anthony Perez on Jun 24, 2011 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

I fear Brooks is confident

in the same way Sasha is confident.

by Andres B on Jun 24, 2011 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

And the way T-Will was confident?

I figure you’d like Brooks.

Brooks reportedly torched everyone he played against: Shumpert, Singleton, etc. Meanwhile Jimmer was held in check by Shumpert, which is what caught Walsh’s eye. Brooks lit him up.

BROOKS was the best scorer in college bball, IMO

by Anthony Perez on Jun 24, 2011 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

There is a MAJOR difference

In athleticism, handle, quickness, post game etc, just Talent, dude can do it all offensively.

"We're not there yet, but we're going somewhere," Johnson said. "And we're going to Brooklyn. We're not going to contract. We're going to Brooklyn."

Wow. I guess you aren’t allowed to say anything without people bashing TWill…

Pick up Ben Hansbrough

Trade

Farmar + Morrow + Outlaw
Jefferson + McDyess

Cap space for Thornton at starting shooting guard and use some more for cheap and effective veteran role players who can defend and shoot.

D.Will – Hansbrough – Gaines
Thornton – Brooks
Jefferson – James
Hump – J.Will – McDyess
Lopez – Petro

D.Will and Thornton in the backcourt will be a FORCE.
Hansbrough and Brooks bench backcourt will be a FORCE.
Hump (The Hulk) and J.Will (The Thing) platoon will be a rebounding FORCE.

Lopez will overcome shoegate , and learn how to rebound with 2 hands and how to pass out of double teams better.

Maybe bring in some thuggery defensive guys with Jeff Foster and DeShawn Stephenson.
