So if the Nets don't get Dwight Howard, then who?

This season, the media, the Nets' front office, and we the fans spent all our time focusing on the pursuit of Carmelo Anthony but we wound up losing out to another team (Knicks).  Fortunately for us, we wound up getting an even better player in Deron Williams. Now, we are all now shifting our focus to Dwight Howard.  Many are optimistic when thinking about what could possibly be while others are realistic in looking back at the Nets' history of failure in being able to bring in the Lebrons, the Bosh's, or the Wade's, etc.

Rumor has it that D Howard could possibly prefer to go to L.A., and I am sure Jerry Buss wouldn't prevent that from happening.  Especially when you consider how the L.A. Lakers just lost to the Dallas Mavericks, they are definitely going to be looking to upgrade players, get younger, and possibly lose some salary to help them revitalize their franchise.  As much as it pains me, playing with the Lakers and Kobe Bryant is much more attractive to a free agent than what potentially could happen in BKLN.

Some have said that we shouldn't focus on the "big ticket" player, rather who the Nets could get unexpectedly to help rebuild our own team.  So that being said, if the Nets don't get Dwight Howard via trade or during free agency, who should be the next player be that we go after?

Agree...

AK or Prince….. Nene and lopez would be hard to Stop… If Dwight becomes available, we still got a lot off assets to trade.. picks and Lopez.. But for now, we need to build our talents,,,

OJ Mayo

He’s not an elite player, but he fits what we need. We need a wing player that can put the ball on the floor and make something happen and that’s just what OJ Mayo brings to the table. He was also the number one player in the country coming out of high school, so even if the production isn’t there, you know the talent is. He could probably use someone like Avery to tough him up. The Grizzlies have tried to trade him a number of times which suggests that they’d continue to be willing to do so. Farmar+first rounder or two second rounders would probably work. I think given the right situation, and D-Will being his point guard certainly fits the criteria, Mayo could score 20 a night…

Nice!!

Plus it was said that O.J. Mayo was about to be shipped out right before the trade deadline ended. I would think he is expendible!

mayo's price

has gone up signifcantly since the trade deadline, and these playoffs. he wont go for a pile of poop. I dont see Farmar as a big asset for them considering Conley plays 38 minutes a game.

by Hitdog42 on May 8, 2011 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

not by much...

I’m sure his price has gone up from Josh McRoberts and a 1st rounder, but farmar is certainly better than McRoberts. Mayo is playing well in spurts but he’s not even starting for them. Conley got a large contract but he really hasn’t been all that good this year and Farmar’s numbers as a starter are better than his. The fact that Conley’s playing 38 minutes a game just shows the lack of point guard depth they have…

The Nets are good

As long as they upgrade the 2 and 3, re-sign Humphries, possibly find a back-up center, and as some have suggested, maybe even re-sign Humphries AND get Nene, they’re good. With that team, and gradual improvements over time, the Nets won’t be far from contending

by JerseysFinest. on May 8, 2011 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

Thad Young, Rudy Gay, Mayo, Nene, i don’t know, i don’t think this free agent class is that good.

by mjf900 on May 8, 2011 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

no nene and mayo are going to make us contenders. none of the guys anyone named will make us contenders.

by mjf900 on May 8, 2011 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Contenders for a championship or just contenders? Because Deron already make us a playoff team, so with the right pieces and a little luck anything can happen.

Dwight Howard would obviously help the Nets, but they don't need him.

Trade Farmar and Petro. Resign Humphries. Sign Nene, Kirilenko and Smith. Get. It. Done.

Iggy..

Iggy, Smith, Mayo….some one who would make our backcourt explosive

What about Josh Smith?

I have always like J Smith from the Atlanta Hawks. A young, strong power forward who the Nets could trade for and put next to B Lopez.

Lol

I know its a terrible trade but this would be amazing:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=3spuaag

Add Sasha and 2 firsts going to Philly and 1st round pick going to Hawks. (Trade machine wouldn’t let me add them)

After looking at that trade...

I really KNOW you must be a Nets fan. Could it possibly be more lopsided in our favor? LOL!!

Play with an old Kobe or Play with a younger overall team

Let Howard decide. Heck, Im still not convince he will leave the Magics. If they do well next season, it might be hard for him to leave a “proven” winner.

lopez taking the next step

is the best chance the nets have at getting to 50 wins without destroying their cap situation.
Lopez showing everyone he can be the #2 guy on a good team, signing a guy like prince, and returning players showing large improvement (morrow, outlaw in shape, farmar).

by Hitdog42 on May 9, 2011 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

just build around Dwill, Lopez, and Hump and establish team chemistry.

WHEN YOU DESCRIBE the prototypical NBA center, he is not complete without superlative size, strength and athleticism. He’ll fight for the tough rebounds in the trenches, but is just as quick to burn you with a shot from 15 feet.

Johan Petro possesses all of these skills and more, and at a mere 23 years of age, he bears all the promise of fulfilling his vast potential.

If there is no Dwight..

I say we chase after a wing superstar. Of course, superstars are hard to come by.. so if we don’t find one, I’m ok with signing TRADEABLE players. Eventually, we’re gonna need that superstar.. and I’d like to have pieces to give away in order to get him.

Tradeable not meaning great assets like Lopez or Favors.. but tradeable as in Farmar, Humphries, etc. None of that Petro/Outlaw crap.

by KingofDenial on May 9, 2011 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

There arent any super stars out there that are tradeable

Everyone knew Deron would be gone because of his issues in Utah, we just didnt predict it would be this season. Everyone expected it next season. I dont see any other players like that. With that said….

if no dwight…

Say no to nene, Hump is just fine as our starting PF and will be cheaper.

OJ mayo is a must, if hes available then make the trade billy. If not then JR.

say no to prince. too much money and past his prime. if hes cheap then sure.

Sign AK for 2 year contract for vet min. He said himself money isnt a factor and he has plenty of it.

That leaves us with plenty of cap to pursue other avenues.

The Lakers will be going after Dwight very hard now that their team is in disarray. But ultimately i think it will be up to Orlando and i think we can give them a better deal. Its too hard to predict though, so im not counting on dwight to come. Being a Nets fan clouds my thoughts on these matters but i honestly believe Dwight would be better off going to Brooklyn than LA. Kobe is in decline… he makes them lose games by taking so many shots to get the points he gets.

the knicks are a non factor unless they include melo or amare so its really between LA and the Nets.

Oh and i thoroughly enjoyed the Petro>Collins hahahahaha i remember hating Collins for so many years. Having Brook is such a pleasure after watching Collins horrendous play for so long. I hope he never comes back to the Nets and i am content with Brook at Center! lol

by breaking20 on May 9, 2011 5:28 PM EDT reply actions

Those suggesting Mayo

never show a viable package to get him. The aren’t just going to dump him. If that was the case, any team could get him, teams with cap room that is.

by JerseysFinest. on May 9, 2011 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I still don't think they're going to want Farmar or his salary.

I just don’t know that the Lakers pick is good enough to entice them.

It’s definitely not going to be if Indiana jumps back in with the 15th pick.

by vincecarter4pres on May 9, 2011 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

A lot of speculations

Like Breaking20 said there arent many Stars out there whether FA or Trade.

Howard is the one and only SuperStar that would fit with Dwill. Everyone else is speculation.

Iggy and his contract like VC4Prez said doesnt automatically FIT with this team. Granger may FIT more then Iggy but his contract isnt attractive too and Indy might not want to trade him now. Gay might FIT more then Iggy but his contract is a NO NO.

Mayo, JR SMith (Overrated on this board), Thornton, and etc.. are not STARS and may never be. I dont even think they FIT with Dwill.

Then WHO fits with Dwill? Who knows. Dwill seems to make below average players better but not good enough. Look at the UTAH teams, young guys that FIT Sloans system. Dwill made those guys better then what they were. Even Boozer needs to change his game to play with Rose and he hasnt looked the same. People are saying injury but Boozer is always injured. He was injured in Utah, but the Pick and Roll hid all that.

SO WHO DO WE NEED?
Boozer (Too Expensive now)
CJ Miles (Have to wait until 2012)
Paul Millsap (Utah would really need cap space to let him go)
Al Jefferson ($14 mill would be better then give Nene $11 mil or Hump $8 mil)
Kyle Korver (No way bulls trade him might have to wait)
Rony Brewer (No way Bulls let him go might have to wait)
Raja Bell (too old but maybe utah wants cap space but he is cheap)
AK47 – (A lot of people here wants him but I am on the fence about signing him)

i would say

Phily needs to resign Yaung and Williams both high priority and recently Memphis said M Gasol would be a must sign for them that’s make me think that we can get Iggy and Gay via trade of expiring contracts and darft picks wich Nets have for next few years however as we heard from D WILL he dont really need D12 but he want’s to play that would compete every year so my list would look like this:
D WILL – Gaines
Iggy-Outlaw hate to have him at SG but his contract is killing us
Gay-AK-Prince
Hump-Wright
Lopez- jas Collins former net for vet min as we sow this year can play vs D12
