Melo Was Ready to Play with the Nets

Photo

Carmelo Anthony said Thursday what he hinted at before: he thought he'd wind up not with Knicks, but with the Nets. And since he had always insisted he would sign an extension before the trade deadline, he implied that he'd have signd with the Nets as well. 'Melo talked about the last minute trade talks on "The View".

"I think it was a lot of negotiation back and forth between a lot of the teams," said Anthony, who was joined on the TV show by his wife, LaLa Vasquez. "With the Knicks, it came down to the last hour before the trade deadline, and it happened. Me personally, I thought I was going to end up in New Jersey."

The Nets had offered the Nuggets a package of Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh, four first round picks and $3 million for Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Renaldo Balkman, Melvin Ely and Shelden Williams. The four picks being offered were the Nets' 2011 pick; the Lakers' 2011 pick; the Warriors' 2012 pick; and the Rockets' 2012 pick. Two days later, of course, the Nets bagged Deron Williams for Favors, Harris and two picks: the Nets' 2011 pick and the Warriors' 2012 pick, and $3 million. Separately, the Nets sent Murphy to the Warriors for two expiring contracts, Dan Gadzuric and Brandan Wright.

I don't believe it

Behind the scenes I’m sure he and others knew he would somehow get traded to the Knicks. Melo is just trying to look like he forced Denver’s hand. Dolan I’m sure told him to sit tight no matter what he was hearing.

Anthony would had made us cool and a playoff team but that would be it. You need talent with high carector.

by Zartan on May 5, 2011 9:24 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Nothing to regret, no reason to be disappointed.

Thus far, the road we took has brought us a long way. The value we were giving in the Melo deal was absurd, especially with the draft picks. 2/23, we dealt for a better player and dealt less. We saved at least two draft picks, Ammo, and Uzoh. Billy King made a name for himself, and Prokhy and the FO was given a LOT of credit.

There wasn't enough time left to make playoffs. Indiana ended up winning 37 games. Denver wanted it that way so their draft pick would be better.

And Chauncey may be damaged goods, with his now “bum” knee that gave out twice already. Yet we would have had to pay him $14.2 million just like the Knicks did.

NO! We have a better chance of making the playoffs with Deron Williams leading this team.

LETS GO NETS!

by JustinNJ on May 6, 2011 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, no, we didn't

Deron was injured last season when we got him. It’s obvious that having him is better for the franchise than the Nuggets trade, but we would’ve had a better chance at the playoffs last season had we traded for a healthy Melo.

by Murse Mike on May 8, 2011 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Thank heavens we didn’t get Melo.

Deron is a building block. Melo is a piece.

Melo is not a leader and doesn’t inspire his teammates to be better.

by power_njerz on May 5, 2011 9:42 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

...to put it into perspective in terms of Nets history...

Melo would have helped our team as much as Marbury did when we traded for him.

Instead we got our Kidd in D-Will.

Melo thought we'd rather have that crappy deal

than landing the best PG in the league and, now, potentially Dwight. What an idiot!

If of course, he was serious.

WHEN YOU DESCRIBE the prototypical NBA center, he is not complete without superlative size, strength and athleticism. He’ll fight for the tough rebounds in the trenches, but is just as quick to burn you with a shot from 15 feet.

Johan Petro possesses all of these skills and more, and at a mere 23 years of age, he bears all the promise of fulfilling his vast potential.

The Nets could possibly signed Melo, but the Knicks, never would get DWill...

…DWill wasn’t on the block, we have to make a bow to billy King, because he was the one who pull that off, because he knew Jazz GM from the Sixers days and was a friend of him and almost by accident he made the trade, he wasn’t chasing Dwill, no one knew Dwill was available, and if the King didn’t pull that off, Dwiil would still be a Jazz player.

DWill all the way to the Finals!! some day, very close...

I wonder what will be the Knicks strategy for next year. Will they try to save for maximum cap space for 2012-2013 to be able to afford CP3 in free agency?

If that becomes the Knicks strategy, then they would have to think twice about trying to sign Dalembert to a multi-year contract (assuming there would be a MLE or that a hard cap with a $70+ million limit is put in place? Knicks could be worse next year, if they decide to save for 2012-2013.

I wonder if CP3 would be willing to refuse signing an extension with any team NO trades him to, except for the Knicks?
Since Knicks have nothing to offer NO in a trade, that would be the only way they could land him.

by jerry25 on May 5, 2011 11:24 PM EDT reply actions

well isnt the reason that they extended Billups

is so he would expire next year when Cp3 is a FA, and so is Deron if he doesnt sign the extension and D12 as well!

by danxcr on May 5, 2011 11:26 PM EDT up reply actions

But NO would trade CP3 elsewhere before the Feb. trade deadline and DWill will likely re-sign with Nets by the 1st regular season game (if Lopez appears more fit, if Hump re-signs, if AK47 signs up and maybe another SG and a couple of Vet Mins.)

CP3 would have to refuse signing extension with other teams.
And letting Billups $14.2 million shouldn’t make enough room for CP3 since Knicks might only be 5-10 million under the cap (assuming a new addition at Center for next year – unless the new hard cap is raised to over $70.

oh ok

Like the NBA, who own New Orleans, does something improper.

The Knicks will be at 61.2 million for next year upon signing their 1st round pick (9th player) before they fill up the rest of the roster.

by jerry25 on May 6, 2011 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

The Knicks are cheaters

and the NBA is in control of NO, so I wouldn’t put anything past them.

by Murse Mike on May 6, 2011 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

And why would Felton sign with the Knicks?

I really don’t see how any player would give any discount to the Knicks, just so that players can be dealt as soon as they play well, or dumped as soon as something better comes along ala Miami.

That’s why the Knicks are filled with rejects now, like Stoudmire, who no one else wanted to pay, Fields, who every team passed on at least once, Shawn Williams, who has somehow managed not to be arrested long enough to play an entire season

by Murse Mike on May 6, 2011 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I love Deron

The Knicks would never have gotten D-Will

Kevin O’conner’s story is very different that Billy King’s story, and is also filled with several holes. Billy King’s story makes much more sense, which would mean that D-Will would never have been dealt if not for his relationship with O’conner. And besides, were they Jazz REALLY interested in the Knicks’ assets? Look at how valuable those assets were to Denver in the playoffs.

by Murse Mike on May 6, 2011 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. If you had to trade DWILL, and you were getting Felton, Chandler, Gallo, Mozgov, and a pick then heck yeah.

That’s much better than what they have now

by xs0ng on May 6, 2011 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

All of the Knicks

that got dealt were almost completely useless against OKC, totally disappeared. And the assets we traded to the Jazz are all more valuable than anything the Knicks lost. It’s very debatable whether the Jazz would have been better with a Knicks deal, but considering that the Knicks traded 4 NBA players, as opposed to the Nets trading 2, then yeah, last year might have been a little better for them with the other deal. But those picks they got from us, versus having mediocre talent without enough minutes to go around, yeah, our assets are much better.

Besides, did you actually watch Denver vs OKC? The ex-Knicks were pathetic!
