I was looking over the Memphis grizzlies situation and i took notice of their payroll. they have over 51 million commited for the 2011-2012 season and more the season after that because Gay's and zach's salaries increase every year. This is without counting Marc Gasol
and Shane Battier
Now it is probably a forgone conclusion that they are going to let Battier walk, but after the postseason success they had, I really can't see them allowing Gasol to get away and he is due a substantial raise. (He made 3.5mil last year) how does this translate to Gay? Well if they end up paying Gasol somewhere in the 8mil. range, (BTW he may command more)that will put them at roughly 59mil. for 10 players. i forgot to add sam young who made $800K last year so the number is actually higher. They have to by NBA rules add 3 more players, which even at the veterans min. will probably add 2-3 mil. Memphis IS NOT a financially sound franchise. They can't afford to Keep high payrolls. I'm assuming that maybe they might try to jettison Gay because let's face it, they had all this postseason success without him. They actually became more defensively sound on the perimeter without him. If they figure we can have success without paying our small forward 14mil. they might decide for the financial well being of the franchise to unload him.
Now what would it take to get him. That is the tricky part. Well they want Financial relief, we can give them that because we are under the cap so we can absorb his salary without sending the equivalent anmount of salary in return. I know they are in the Market for a Backup point and Jordan Farmar
is good and attractively priced. They would want another small forward to fill in the minutes void created by gay's departure, Damion James
anyone. Finally, they would want Draft picks of which we have few, May be the houston pick and a couple of 2nd rounders to sweeten the pot. If they still won't bite make it the Houston pick and one of our own 1st rounders. What do you guys think about this?
