The Consequences of the Playoffs: Your thoughts?
With the Nets on the brink of a critical off-season, this year's playoff matchups offer special intrigue. What will be the fallout for the Nets if certain teams and players thrive (or falter) under the bright lights of the playoffs? How will an Orlando collapse impact the flight pattern of everyone's most coveted Superman? Will epic failure in Boston, San Antonio or L.A. accelerate the dismantling of great dynasties? How might playoff performances of individual players effect our front office as they scout potential free agents or trades? If you're down for some speculation, here's your place:
1. Orlando: Let's face it. Dwight won't be happy if he's the only one who shows up for the party with the Hawks. Evidence, game 1 of the series. While Orlando fans are now putting up billboards to appeal to Dwight directly, there is real cause for concern. A bloated payroll. Marginal players who could be exposed as such (like in Cleveland), should Dwight take flight. And a head coach who is always seconds away from a nervous breakdown. Should Orlando get embarrassed by the Hawks, one can expect the talk of Dwight's Flight from Orlando to intensify to fever pitch. So I'm rooting for Hot-Lanta. Secondary consideration is Jason Richardson, who isn't exactly upping his free agency value. Yeeech. Don't want him.
2. Atlanta: Come on Hawks!!! With your enormous payroll tied down to Joe Johnson. LOL! Here's hoping that Hinrich plays like a superstar and Hawks management rewards him with a new fat contract. There's no way that Atlanta can keep all of its talents, regardless of how well they do in the playoffs. So who goes? J-Smoove? He'd be NICE at the SF position running with the Ninja. Curses to that Outlaw contract!!!
3. Indiana: A late season run might be enough to save their head coach and keep their team intact. Maybe, maybe not. The Pacers are seemingly stuck in that no-where zone. Do they trade assets and try to re-brand themselves, or do they stay pat and aim for the 8th spot every year, only to be molested by the top seed? If they're selling, Granger would be the only player I'd consider buying.
4. Philadelphia: Did you hear that Avery really, really, really likes Thad Young? No kidding. He's pretty fond of him. So consider Philly's 4-game series sweep by the Heat as Thad's audition. Other pieces that might become available if the price is right are Iggy and Evan Turner. I'm not sure if the two of them can coexist. I've read that Iggy makes Evan cry during (and maybe after) practices. Not a big Evans fan though as his defense looks lackluster. Iggy on the other hand could be a great 3rd wheel on the Ninja-mobile. Perhaps the consequence of a blowout to Miami motivates Thorn to dump Iggy and not match an offer for Thad. Not sure. Thorn is a sneaky you know what, when he's not taking one of his 23-hour power naps or plotting revenge on someone. I hate the Heat and would love to see the upset, but c'mon son. Heat in 4. 5 if they get distracted.
5. Denver: So many assets. So little cash to cover everyone. J.R. Smith, Gallo, Chandler, K-Mart. Someone has to go. Like Atlanta, the equation doesn't change even if they overachieve during the playoffs. I'm not sure if anyone on their roster who could be available is a real difference maker. My ideal youth-movement pickups would be Thornton from Sac-Town (who is drawing raves from fans and front office types for his on-court production and lockerroom presence), and Thad Young (although the Outlaw experiment has me nervous about converting PFs to SFs. Anyway, Denver is deep, so some of their guys will definitely be in play.
What say the collective?

First. oh and I also like Thad Young and Thornton. I don’t like the whole pipe dream of getting D. Howard. Kinda feels like when we were courting Lebron.
I came. I conquered. I fell asleep.
Yup. Thornton and Young
can both create their own shots and run the floor. Young is a good defender. Thornton also hustles on D and is instant offense. Deron would make them both even better players.

Thornton is a defensive liability and Young sucks as a 3, he excels as a bench 4.

I’m wondering why you wouldn’t want those players. You can state one wrong thing about anybody in the league.

I wouldn't want Young or Thornton because they both have MASSIVE flaws and would cost a ton of money...
Yet similar if not superior players will be available for next to nothing who are on expiring contracts and offer not only their play, but the bonus and must needed flexibility for the future, namely 2012.

I don't know about Young as much,
but if you think defense is a “MASSIVE FLAW” of Thornton, you’re incorrect. I’d say he’s average. Also I ‘m not sure what you mean by “a ton of money”. How much are you thinking he’ll command?

He's a liability when he isn't defending point guards and I think he gets somewhere around 5 years and $40 million.
Young is a tweener who excels as a backup power forward and is a below average small forward, he can’t shoot and if he’s inserted into the starting lineup as a small forward he’s going to fall flat on his face.

I could see him getting 8mil/year in this CBA, probably not the new one.
And I can also see him continuing to produce at 21-5-4 like he has since he became a starter in Sac. From what I’ve seen of his defense the last 20+ games, the only time I haven’t been satisfied is when he was guarding Kobe.

Sac-Town is $13m under the present cap. No reason why they wouldn’t throw money at Thornton, unless the move to Anaheim causes them to go cheap.

Tyreke Evans is one of the most overrated players in the league period.

We need to build a better Overall team first.
Resign Hump (12 and 12). Hopefully a better Brook (Version 22 and 8)
Healthy D-Will (21 and 10) and some pieces.
For me JR Swish at SG. Someone has to go in Denver he is restricted and George Karl Loves to torment the Kid. He comes “home” gets a new start, new everything, joins Avery and D-Will’s Bible study and has us on Sportscenter twice a week. Chipping in an electric 15-18 ppg.
And somehow take the dissapointing Marvin Williams from Atlanta for more of the same. 6’9 240 athletic and Atlanta’s best Perimeter defender. Comes to Jersey/Brooklyn with lower expectations(Like just be better than Outlaw) and becomes our high flying defensive anchor.
Leftover spots would go to Reggie Williams and maybe Shelden Williams to back up Hump too. Giving us four Williams’ they could start a boy band or something. Drafting either Justin Harper or Jon Leuer to be the young athletic Stretch 4. And away we go!

Josh Smith presently making $11m per year. They also have Crawford’s $10m coming off the books though. They have Horford and Johnson locked up long term. For those who said JRich is a better defender than Carter
Last year, Magic won 59 games (most than any other EC team this year except CHI) and swept the Hawks in the 2nd round.
This year, Magic won 52 games and are trailing the Hawks in the 1st rd.
Yeah, Carter was ORL’s problem, it’s sooooooooo obvious.
They should have kept Lewis more importantly
watched all their game this and last season, they missing length.
"I think I’m the best point guard in the league. No reason. I just think I’m the best.’’-Deron Williams.
But how much of it is just
Dwight making mediocre talent look good, like LeBron did in Cleveland. Like Cleveland with LeBron, the Magic don’t seem built for the playoffs (i.e. lacking a clutch ball-handler – Chicago D.Rose; Boston Rondo; Lakers Kobe)

The loss of gortat and Lewis are more of a reason why Orlando struggling, not to mention underachieving from turk and arenas
by domininaldo1981 on Apr 18, 2011 10:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
It was so obvious and McCann who wrote that article must be kidding or he doesn't know BB.
Carter has little interest or determination in playing defense. It doesn’t make JRich an all world defender to say he is better than Carter (because JRich isn’t). I think last year JJohnson just shot crappy. It happens. As for Orlando’s record, they were already on pace to win about 52 games w/Carter. As for winning less games this year, I think certain teams got better this year (Miami and Chicago for instance) and the Magic was sliding backward.
The trade did not make a difference either way as there were issues with the players going out and the ones coming in. Let’s hope it is an impetous for Howard to want to get out of there quicker as the team slides down.
Please. So it’s just coincidence that Johnson was doing worse against ORL last year. Whatever. Richardson is stinking up the place in this series, he is playing like absolute crap (2-8 and 3-12 so far). Who is Jason Richardson? Who? Carter still is the better player, even at this point in their careers.
As for teams getting better, well others got worse. Like Boston. Also, last year there was a 62 win Cleveland team led by LeBron.
Carter will always be a better player than Richardson. That's not the problem.
The lack of intensity and determination is the problem w/Carter and that is what VanGundy and the Magic wanted to get away from along with Lewis’ bad leg. I will agree the trade was lateral at best though losing Petrus and Gortat were much bigger losses than Carter and Lewis. I think giving up Petrus you lost bench scoring and defense but for some reason, he was in Van Gundy’s dog house.
correction to your statement about other teams Andres
Boston won more games this year than last year. Cleveland may have been gone, but it was replaced by Chicago. NY, Philly and Indiana got better as well. The level of competition in the East as a whole got better this year as compared to last year. Stevie G has a point Orlando’s problems are not whether Carter is better than Richardson. As you pointed out below, the desperate trade that Otis did hurt their bench more than their starting rotation. Carter and Richardson, in wins/losses really come out to a near wash. The underperforming of Arenas and Turk compared to Pietrus and Gortat is the big blow amongst other factors.

I stand corrected
Boston won more games this year than last year
true, I got it wrong, sorry. I had the impression they had been a worse team, my bad.
Boston was so-so in the RS last year but played great in the post-season, this year they started pretty well the RS and then got worse as the season went on, and from the first couple of games they’ve played I don’t think they have much left.
yea, it doesn't look good
but they still have some veteran closers on that team. Poor bench production is what’s killing them. No help from Green, Davis, West or Kristic. And two of these guys ppl keep saying to go after. Umm, no thanks.

Boston started out hot because everyone was healthy (except Perkins)
Shaq and JO played well for them, and it seemed like they could make a deep run again. But then all their aging bodies started to break down, and both Oneals went down for an extended period of time. Perkins is gone, and Shaq is still sidelined. I wouldn’t count them out until we know that Shaq isn’t returning on time
I was not impressed with Young.
A great physical talent but does not shoot well and runs around like he is lost on defense. Runs the floor well which would work with DWill but he has to bring more to the table.
+1. He runs the floor well and plays nice around the basket. Is not a good shooter, average D. No doubt he has an upside, but Nets are not in the market for upside.

My problem with Young
is he is kind of similar to Outlaw in that he is best suited to be a small ball 4 off the bench. Not saying they are similar in skills because Young is obviously a much better player right now, but just in terms of position. I think part of Young’s value is that he is such a good player off the bench, but making him a starter may expose some weaknesses (not unlike what happened with Outlaw). The problem with that is, were gonna have to pay him a lot of money to pry him away from Philly, and we seem to have bench options at both forward spots in Outlaw (simply because it will be too difficult to move him) and James (Avery really seems to love him). Assuming a starting SF is added via free agency or trade then we really dont need another SF or even another hybrid forward.

@"James (Avery really seems to love him)."
Me too! I just rewatched him against Raptors in London. He can jump, rebound, defend. Fast. Long. He’s not a project – he’s an ok player right now who MAY be on his way to being much better.
When he was getting those starts it wasn’t to showcase him or give him some experience, it was that he was the best choice to start. Decent rookie.
Damion James is one guy i hope we keep. He had a lot of injuries this year, but all the games i saw him play in in person, he was everything for us. Defense, toughness, rebounding, and just being a smart basketball player. A full season with L &P behind him, and he’ll be a fan favorite in no time!!

Martin still is a heck of a defender
Hollinger wrote some nice things about his defense on his all defensive team article last week. You should check it. Karl and his assistants coaches call him their defensive quarterback, Wilson Chandler recently praised him for being a vocal leader and backing up his words with his play, and for playing on both sides of the court.
And he’d cost us less money and years than clowns like Big Baby.
I agree. I have been watching more of the Denver games and Martin still has some gas left in the tank.
He can still defend and get up and down the court quicker than most players. Having him come off the bench to spot the PF and even the SF position and run the court with DWill might be worth something to this team. Again, it depends on how much he wants.
He might get upwards of 4 mil of year which is not bad for a top 6th man.
No more than 2 years at a time though.
How about giving Yao a 1 year, heavily insured deal to back up Brook
after addressing our most pressing needs??? I wonder what the asking price would be for him.
I'd guess around 10mil.
The potential is too high for anything less.

I doubt that.
I’m thinking 3 years for about 7 million a year, only the first season guaranteed, the second maybe 3 mill guaranteed the last completely unguaranteed.
The only reason he might command a salary like a 1 year at 10 is his enormous marketability and the point is moot anyway, I doubt he wants to sign a 1 year deal as a 15 minute per game backup.

agreed
but Portland has yet to make him a qualifying offer (8.8mil), they still have until late June to do so, but right now he’s an UFA. Some contender with throw the full MLE at him, if we still have a MLE that is. So we would have to beat that.
All in all, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll come here. He would have to be desperate for a decent deal. Why would he sign here to play behind Lopez (or possibly Dwight) unless we offered him more money than any other team?
Josh Smith
If Atlanta looks to trade Josh Smith, I think the Nets can offer something in return…
Farmar/Petro/DJames plus Lakers pick and cash for Josh Smith.
Atlanta gets a capable backup PG to pair with Crawford if they resign him. They get a young and promising SF in James, a backup C to take the place of all the C’s that are coming off the books for them, a pick and cash.
Nets may not need to include Petro if Atlanta doesn’t want him and offer a 2nd round pick or more cash.

Would we be able to maybe Eliminate DJames and give that package for Marvin Williams?

Marvin Williams to me, is Outlaw
overpaid and under producing.

Yup. He's better then Outlaw, but who isn't? Williams is garbage.

Williams can defend and is a true PF
He is Atlanta’s best wing defender and usually draws the assignment of guarding the oppositions best wing. That says enough to me. After 2 seasons of getting torched on the wings you could use a Marvin Williams.

Marvin Williams is a true power forward?
Now I’ve heard it all.

I meant SF
Reading is fundamental. evident typo. The body of that entire message spoke about Wing play. We need a true SF. Marvin fits the bill.

In exchange for Outlaw I would take him in a heartbeat, but he's pretty lame as a whole.

The Hawks would make that trade, only if they were looking to dump salary
and we’d still probably have to sweeten the pot with another pick
I would want Afflalo for Denver
Out of all the FAs they have. And then search for a starting 3.

I can get behind this, I'm a huge Afflalo fan.

I'm all for AAA
he’s a very efficient shooter and great perimeter defender. He would fit very well as our starting 2 guard. But we would still need a SF who could create for himself or penetrate deep into defenses to set someone else up, b/c D-Will can’t play every minute and we need someone else to create offense.
But from what I read, Denver will match any offer for AAA
Which is why we grab JR Smith and get a defensive minded SF
JR smith a good perimeter shooter who can create his own shot and penetrate. JR Smith will flourish beside D-Will.

Why do people want this guy?
He’s a terribly stupid and childish chucker who’s an unlikeable thug off the court.

Wow did you meet him???
Unlikeable thug? Really? Enlighten me on that one. No one is perfect. They call Kobe a Chucker too and a rapist and a ego maniac who alienates his teamates. But they also call him MVP and five time NBA champion.
Say what you will about JR the Talent is undeniable. We need someone who can create for themselves. Cant be Deron ALL the time when the clock is winding down. Funny when you go over to the Denver Stiffs page they call JR the most popular Nugget and CLEAR fan favorite. Yep that’s REALLY unlikeable.

Whatever your opinion of him is off the court forget it...
Just remember on the court he’s a mindless chucker with exceptionally low BBIQ, horrendous shot selection and he antagonizes the opposition with his clownish antics.

Kobe might be a chucker but he has a high BBIQ…
The talent is clearly not undeniable. The guy wasn’t a lottery pick (picked after Hump!)
What did George Karl have to say about him last night?
George Karl said after Wednesday’s Game 2 loss to the Thunder that “the flood gates opened” when J.R. Smith entered the game.
I wonder why…-17 in 6 minutes. UNDENIABLE TALENT! He is a fantastic dunker! He takes tons of 3s and sometimes they go in! He literally can’t guard anyone! He averages attempting 5 threes a game and 1.5 turnovers! UNDENIABLE!
