It seems like ever since "The Decision" everyone has in their mind that the way to win is by putting 2 or 3 superstars on one team. Sorry for going against the grain, but I'll believe it when I see Miami beat an elite team or win a championship.
Nets have their superstar, and all anyone on here talks about is getting another superstar, why we need one, don't spend this summer because Dwight Howard will be available next summer, etc. etc. First things first, there will be no Dwight next summer if the Nets don't improve the team this summer. Why? Because there will be no Deron if the Nets don't improve. Coupled with the fact that Dwight will not hit free agency. Orlando has a smarter GM and ownership than Cleveland does. No team is ever going to be like Cleveland. Saving assets to make an offer for Dwight is the best thing, but it is not and will not be the #1 thing this offseason, or for the future.
With that said, the example the Nets need to follow is.......The Chicago Bulls. The Bulls have one superstar, who happens to play the same position as the Nets superstar. What they did, is build around that star, and get players that complement his game. We all know that Deron is going to have a big part in recruiting and helping mgmt with a list of players that they should go after. I'm sure mgmt will also present a list of players, and they will make the best decisions for this team. We as fans, of course, want to throw out all the possibilities that are out there. There are some realistic approaches, and some pipe dream thoughts. But look at the Bulls. There isn't more than one superstar on the team. Derrick Rose this year is averaging 24pts and 8 assists a game. I think the most impressive stat, is his 8 assists. He's not a pure pg, and yet he's making those around him better. The team recognizes their roles. Noah is not a superstar center, and one can argue that Brook is better. Boozer is not a superstar PF, he's a very good PF. Deng, Bogan, Korver, Gibson, Brewer??? If before this year, other than probably Boozer and Noah, anyone mentioned those other players, you would not put them together and say they would be the 2nd best team in the East, and they are. Why is that? Again, they no their specific roles. They play defense, and they have bought into the team and organizations goals.
The Nets need to take this example. Build a team around Deron, much like the Bulls built a team around Rose. Players that are going to come in and provide energy, defense, toughness. Players that are going to be on the same page, that the ultimate goal is a championship. Regardless of who we as fans view as stars, ultimately it comes down to how well a team gels together. Who cares if you have 3 superstars, and yet you can only beat up on sub .500 teams, while the elite teams make you cry in your locker room. The Nets have drastically improved with just one person on the floor. And it has more to do with buying into the same attitude Deron has than his play. Had he 2 good wrists, Nets would probably be 4-1 since Deron joined the team.
Forget about everything that happened before the trade. That is the past, that is the old era. A new era has begun. Nets no longer need to wait for a superstar, the superstar is already here.
