Rebuilding the Nets in 2011.....

Now the Nets have Deron Williams, what should be their next step? Some on here have said that the Nets should bring in talent next year to try and keep Williams happy, trying to convince him into signing an extension while others wanted the Nets to be patient and wait until the 2012 FA class because some feel it's stronger then the 2011 class. Lets just say we had to go for it next year to keep Williams. Going for it next year might not be as bad as it sounds because in 2011 the UFA's might be better then the UFA's in 2012 and here is why. In 2012 you have two superstars coming out (if you don't include D.Williams), Dwight Howard and Chris Paul. I would LOVE Howard here but I am a realist and just like I knew Lebron James, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade etc etc wasn't coming here (I did believe Amare would come here but we didn't make an offer...too bad we didn't), but I know the Nets are not getting Howard and I don't want to waste any more time waiting for a guy who doesn't want to be here or has to be begged to come (like Anthony). Howard already has his sights being with Kobe in LA and being a movie star as well as a basketball player. So Howard is out and the Nets don't need another PG so Paul is out as well as Steve Nash and Raymond Felton who also will be UFA's in 2012. As for the other UFA's there is Chris Kaman, Vince Carter, Elton Brand, Gerald Wallace, Andrew Bynum and well as a few others but no superstars or even "great" talent. Out of the list above, I see maybe only Wallace as a decent option, Bynum will stay in LA or be traded to Orlando for Howard. Now before I move onto the 2011 class of free-agents lets just go over why the RFA's are not coming here. Their teams will have the right to match any contract, the same way Rudy Gay didn't come here because Memphis offered the max for him so he HAD to sign it. Guys like D.Rose, K.Love, R.Westbrook, E.Gordon and even guys like JJ.Hickson, Landry Fields, Michael Beasley and Danilo Gallinari will probably be resigned by their respectful teams unless you want to offer "max money" or grossly overpay for players like Landry Fields or Michael Beasley?

So if I had 1 year to build the Nets, this is how I would do it assuming these player haven't sign extensions yet. For one I would go after Zach Randolph, yes Zach Randolph. He is a legitimate 20-10 guy who can score with the best of the power-forwards. He gives us an inside presence and will take pressure off Brook Lopez. Backup plan would be David West (maybe he won't resign with NO if he thinks Paul is leaving the following year). Next would be going after Caron Butler who can score and play great defense, something Avery loves. Back-up plan would be Wilson Chandler (he's RFA but maybe Denver would let him go because they have Gallo already and he might be too expensive for a back-up). Last I would go after Jason Richardson. He also plays good defense and still can score even though he's not what he use to be. He's a hard-nose player who doesn't mind getting dirty. Back-up plan is Jamal Crawford (who is avg over 15pts a game). As for our UFA's, bring back Humphries for the right price and let Vujacic walk and well as the others. Next step, use LA's and even Houston's 1st round picks if we have to and trade Outlaw away for cap space. His 7mil is very important in bringing in all this talent.

So lets look at the NEW Brooklyn/NJ Nets

C - Lopez/Petro

PF - Randolph/Humphries

SF - Butler/James

SG - Richardson/Morrow

PG - Williams/Farmer

This team would be a good, deep team that would be in the playoffs next year making some noise. Even if there is a "franchise tag" or some other stipulation that gives a great advantage to the team holding the rights to their superstar, these players would still be available in 2011 and probably would love to come here playing along side with Deron Williams and Brook Lopez knowing that in 1 year they would be opening up a brand-new arena in Brooklyn. What are your thoughts and ideas if you had to build the Nets in 2011?

this would make the nets a playoff team for sure

by GiantsYankees on Mar 4, 2011 9:36 PM EST reply actions

This would make the Nets right on the side of the Heat, Bulls and Magic teams...

…But I think that team is impossible, right the only guy I’m most sure we will sign is AK47

by Heavinsent on Mar 4, 2011 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

what are you kidding me?

…sure AK shot isn’t better than Outlaw, but is BBIQ, great defense, steals, blocks, versatility to post up or put on the floor and very good passer make him a great guy to have on a winning team. Great guy to build chemistry with.

by Heavinsent on Mar 4, 2011 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

randolph is really solid, can score easily and is great rebounder

just worried about his off the court issues and if we do go after him, i hope its not some long term deal or absurd amount

I dont know how's next season with CBA is gonna run, but ...

…if the salaries really go down with less money, the free agents will certainly look for a long term contract… I don’t think we will go and we shouldn’t go for rental players for 1 or 2 years because they will refuse and sign with another team… our chance to build a great team is this summer, we can’t wait for Howard and then loose Howard and DWill…we have to surround DWill and sign the most amount of good players we can, and than letted them gel with each other… if doesn’t work, with good amount of good players, and very draft picks we can make some trades and upgrade us even more…

by Heavinsent on Mar 4, 2011 11:54 PM EST up reply actions

I think zack would hurt Brooks production

I say resign the Hump then sign Big Baby on the Cheap. Love big babys game and hustle. He and hump would make a nice PF rotation and the also could play together. You need three solid bigs not just two.

Also JR Smith and Tayshun Prince are available. My thing is if we aren’t getting bonafied winning star players don’t overspend

DWILL/FARMAR
JRSMITH/AMMO
TPRINCE/DJAMES
HUMP/BIG BABY
LOPEZ/PETRO

PLAYOFFS!!!

The JETS/NETS are coming!

Is Lopez, Hump, James, Morrow and Williams the team?

Can’t go into next season with this team again. I’m not saying we should do all these moves but moves will have to be made before next season starts or Williams might start looking elsewhere for running-mates.

by gambi99 on Mar 5, 2011 8:05 PM EST up reply actions

Impossible

How exactly would you pull that off with the cap space? And no, Outlaw is not trade-able. Even if he was, that would still be very difficult to pull off. Z bo is on 14 million right now, he’ll demand no less than 11 mill in free agency. Both Butler and J Rich are at least 8 million each.

by DarkXaero on Mar 4, 2011 11:56 PM EST reply actions

I agree with you on the championship....

probably would need Brook Lopez to turn into a star but they could hold their own against teams like the Knicks and Orlando. Maybe in a year when Boston breaks up, they cold even beat them. Miami and Chicago would still be the class of the east but it’s better then being on the bottom and if we are on the bottom next year too, we will be looking for a “new” point guard also!!!

by gambi99 on Mar 5, 2011 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

NENE

Is he a UFA? Because I have seen him play a few times and he is very very good. If you didn’t know he was a Power Forward coming out of the draft.

by rodrain2 on Mar 5, 2011 9:01 AM EST reply actions

nets need an upgrade at the 4, hump puts up great numbers, but we lack defense

I don’t think west is the guy either, think smaller, maybe a jason thompson. Still split the minutes with hump. Gives us a bench of farmar, vujacic, outlaw, hump, and petro, all high energy bench guys

by Benl1 on Mar 5, 2011 9:26 AM EST reply actions

good observation

other than the fact that he has good production on the floor, in limited minutes, in a guard friendly system. if he could limit fouling he would be a good option for the front court, and would set the pace defensively. Hump is his best off the bench with his energy

It’s funny — this is exactly what the Nets shouldn’t do.

I agree but what else can they do....

They are in a tough spot here. They need to win now because there are NO other superstar player coming here. We would of had a better shot if Amare or Boozer were free-agents this year with Williams already here or if we didn’t have Williams (maybe had Amare or Boozer already) then we could go after Paul. This year there are no big-time free agents and in 2012….the year Williams can run far away from this organization if he wants, only Howard and Paul are the “big” fish. Well Paul is not coming here to back-up Williams and Howard, again for the 1000th time, is not coming here. So who else can we bring in? Remember last off-season when the Nets decided NOT to offer Amare a “max” contract and most said it was the right thing to do, well how many of us would LOVE to have him running next to Williams and Brook now? All I’m saying is we can’t just pin all our hopes in landing Howard because it’s an extreme long-shot!!!

by gambi99 on Mar 5, 2011 8:24 PM EST up reply actions

i don’t like the 2011 free agency class. a lot of 2nd tier guys like randolph, west or crawford who are not worth 10+ millions a year.

i wouldn’t mind if the nets would offer MLE money to tayshaun prince or kirilenko. they should also look to fill out the roster (9-12 spot) with hard working character guys like shane battier, craig smith or reggie evans and taking a gamble with michael redd for a small contract could also be something that the nets might want to consider but other than that they should largely stay away from free agency.

instead of spending big money in free agency i would like the nets to be active on draft day. with prokhorov’s money and the cap space that we have it shouldn’t be a problem to aquire at least two picks or do some deals with teams who want to shake up their roster.

by Z_Z_Z on Mar 5, 2011 10:34 AM EST reply actions

i hate to break it to you but the 2012 class....

isn’t any better. Unless BK can make another trade for a “problem” star in the league, I feel the only way to compete is trying to build around Williams now. Howard is a pipe-dream for us, he’s not coming here when he could just stay in Orlando, which is a very good team already, or he could go play in Hollywood with Kobe. Nets, like with Lebron, will be his third choice……I do agree with you on the draft day. Maybe BK can make a deal or two.

by gambi99 on Mar 5, 2011 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

You make the most sense

I been saying the same thing.
Tayshun Prince. Hump. Big baby. Mike Redd AK and JR Smith are on my list and can be had.

The JETS/NETS are coming!

by MrBDown on Mar 6, 2011 7:32 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I don't think people get it.

We HAVE to win next season. Dwill will NOT stay here if were not winning. We have to get good free agents. We need to find a way to get rid of outlaw and petro ( mostly outlaw) we need to go after west or Randolph ( I prefer west) and a sf as in young Chandler green prince ak. If we were to choose on talent alone I would go after green. And we were to get rid of outlaw and/or petro we could also go after afflalo or vc or Jason Richardson.

by NetsVC15 on Mar 5, 2011 10:56 AM EST reply actions

but it doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of money for those guys when you can get such players via the draft for a fraction of the price. just look at the last 10 drafts:

gerald wallace (25th pick), zach randolph (19th), mehmet okur (38th), nenad kristic (24th), tayshaun prince (23th), carlos boozer (35th), kendrick perkins (27th), boris diaw (21st), anderson varejao (31st), jason maxiell (26th), david lee (30th), ronnie turiaf (37th), paul millsap (47th), carl landry (31st), glen davis (35th), serge ibaka (24th), ryan anderson (21st) deandre jordan (35th), Taj Gibson (26th), dejuan blair (37th)

that’s only pf/c but the same list could be made for sg/sf. my point is that there is some very valuable guys in the 20th-40th pick range and every year teams are giving away those picks for 3millions or a future 2nd round pick.

with prokhorov’s money we can easily buy 2-4 picks and stockpile young talent. if we find one or two guys who can play right away we’re in a great position since they are on rookie scale contracts, provide immediate help and are great trade assets for the future if orlando or another team wants to make a trade.

by Z_Z_Z on Mar 5, 2011 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with some

Nets HAVE to do something now, and not wait on the chance that they can get Dwight. Dwight loves Orlando, and will only leave Orlando to two cities, LA or NY. So the bid on trades for Dwight (because I don’t think he will make it to free agency) are between Lakers & Nets (knicks got rid of all their tradeable assets for Melo).

So what do we do? I say, emulate the Bulls. They have one superstar in Rose, and surrounded him with good, hard working, energy filled talent. They have size and play defense. All of this, is what the Nets lack. Nets don’t need to make a superteam with 2 or 3 superstars. They need to make a well balanced, defensive oriented team around DWill. Most importantly, they need to start building towards that in this offseason, or Deron will be gone. Players like Nene, AK47, Battier, Chandler, Butler, West, Randolph, Humphries, all players that the Nets should target. Grabbing a 3-4yr guy (like King said) in the draft at either the 3 or 4 slot. Getting Brook some much needed offseason workout plan to improve. This is the type of team Nets need. Remember, Deron makes those around him better.

Nets need defense, west just brings offense

by Benl1 on Mar 5, 2011 1:29 PM EST reply actions

West is more than just offense

Hornets have been one of the best defensive teams in the league this season and part of it is because of West’s improvement in defense. He has improved his defense a lot this season and he’s actually a very decent defender now. So I don’t understand why you all keep saying that he can’t defend.

by DarkXaero on Mar 5, 2011 2:20 PM EST reply actions

"Decent" defender at PF is not the answer when you have Lopez at C!!!

With West playing with Okafor best believe it is because of Okafor why West looks “Decent”…… Smh Yo Jaydee don’t waste ya time anymore…..

by boogeewon on Mar 5, 2011 3:05 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

boogeewon, I didn’t say we should go for West. I’m just saying that West is a better defender than most people here give him credit for. Of course I realize that he won’t be a good fit next to Brook because they’re both poor/sub par rebounders. For West it makes sense because he’s undersized but Brook has been really poor rebounding the ball this season as we all know.

While Z Bo would be a great fit next to Brook for his rebounding, Z Bo is a poor defender too. So that front court would actually be terrible defensively. Z Bo is a worse defender than West.

by DarkXaero on Mar 5, 2011 8:27 PM EST up reply actions

why would the nets do this?

they give up all their cap space on zbo (to me not an upgrade to hump b/c he is not a great pick and roll player and a terrible defender so how is that an upgrade? plus he has had a past filled w/problems and he will cost you 3-4 mm more than hump. butler is coming off a major injury and jrich might be decent but this team goes no where and loses in 2nd round at best. they have to middle it a bit more. jason thompson not the worst idea. a lot of talent and they could get him on the cheap.

by pearlw31 on Mar 5, 2011 7:35 PM EST reply actions

Well I wrote in my post if they "had" to rebuild in 2011.....

also, do you guys think Deron Williams will just stay around while we wait and hope a big-time free-agent signs here. They are not coming next year and they are not coming here in 2012 …..so why are we waiting? Our problem is that we missed out on last years free-agents (Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Amare, Boozer) so now we used most of our assets to bring in Williams. I agree on not using our cap space on players who aren’t stars but I really don’t see any star players available next year and if we stink next year……say good bye to D-Will!!!!

by gambi99 on Mar 5, 2011 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

We won't stink next year

Full training camp improvement from our young core guys. Then you hand DWILL the free agent list and you say which three do you want/need. DWILL plays D and mostly won’t push for guys who don’t.

The JETS/NETS are coming!

by MrBDown on Mar 6, 2011 7:29 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

In my opinion they need to go after either jeff green, or wilson chandler, then look to trade for jason thompson with garbage

by Benl1 on Mar 5, 2011 9:26 PM EST reply actions

with deron running the point we need high flyers to run with him, either green or chandler will fill this void.
the nets also lack an interior presence on defense, Thompson could be a big help here.

by Benl1 on Mar 5, 2011 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

ZBO----NO!

I don’t like Zach Randolph. He is not a team player. I would rather have West, or Wilson Chandler, or Wallace. But small forward is a bigger need than PF, as I have hopes that HUMPH can progress, with Deron passing him the rock.
