Deron Williams - a future in NJ?

Deron Williams having not yet signed an extension with the New Jersey Nets is not a secret. In fact, it's common knowledge that the Nets have taken a huge gamble in trying to persuade him to resign with them and help build the empire that Russian billionaire, Mikhail Prokhorov, dreamed of when he bought the Nets back in 2009.

In the media scrum of the O2 arena in London, the questions came thick and fast but as always with Williams, he answered them in much the same way that he plays the game – providing all the answers with minimum fuss.

But when asked about New Jersey Nets GM, Billy King's, statement that Deron Williams has been tasked with the responsibility of helping the building process of the Nets, the point guard said more than just a few words about whether it was a positive for his future in a Nets uniform:

“Yeah, like I said, my ultimate goal is to win an NBA championship and that's the direction I want to go and in order to do that, we're going to need to get some more players in here that can help us towards that goal. A lot of that is on him (Billy King) but it's also on me to recruit guys and get them in here.”

There's no doubt that all eyes are on Williams and how he answers the questions that he has forced upon him on a daily basis but what about the pressure on the organisation to please Williams and ensure that the gamble they took wasn't all for nothing?

“I think so. I think when they traded for me they gave up so much and that I could possibly be a free agent a year from now so there's pressure on everybody. For me, it's to win here because they (the Nets) gave up so much, for the organisation it's for them to get people in to keep me here.”

There's no doubt that Deron keeps his cards close to his chest regarding his future but for possibly the first time in a Nets uniform, he's indicated that he's willing to look at the future in a Nets uni.

If that truly is the case, then the gamble which has been under so much scrutiny may turn into a masterstroke.

And for Prokhorov, a man who is used to getting what he wants, he can put that achievement at the top of his accomplishments list.
