Around SBN: What If This Is It For The Celtics? End Of An Era Looming

Nets Waive Quinton Ross, Sign Mario West To 10-Day Contract

Photo

The Nets announced Thursday morning that they have waived Quinton Ross, the little used swingman acquired in last year's Yi Jianlian salary dump.  Ross, 29 with an expiring contract, suffered a herniated disc recently and is done for the season. A defensive specialist, he averaged 1.6 points and 0.8 rebounds in 36 games.

A few hours later, they announced that they have signed Mario West, a 6'5" defensive specialist, a 10-day contract. He spent the previous three seasons with the Hawks and was with the Celtics in the preseason. West, 26, has career averages of 0.8 points and 0.8 rebounds in 156 NBA games. He has played the last two seasons with the Maine Red Claws of the D-League, averaging 13.7 points and 3.1 assists. He was waived by Maine last week to be with an ailing family member.  West and Anthony Morrow were teammates at Georgia Tech and share the same agent. He will be the 22nd player to wear the Nets uniform this season.

seriously ross was actually a decent role player but he is one of the many more players that have to go within the next two years

graham – a career bum, shouldnt even be on the cavs inactive list. no reason for him to be here now. jarvis hayes, larry hughes, they would have actually made a positive impact

farmar – with d-will and jordans consistency to stay inconsistent his 4 mil salary needs to go. gaines and uzoh can equal his performance for a combined 1.5 million. send him away for a high second round pick

vujacic – 7 years in and what has he contributed? two free throws in the finals? how many 30 point games sasha had this year? morrow has outplayed him all season. let his 5 mil salary expire and replace him with a starting wing so morrow or james or both can come off the bench. i’d prefer having james white or gerald green over him: at least they can dunk. you a high percentage shot?

petro – why this year he is making triple what he made the previous three years combined, i dont know? he is a 10th-12th man that should be getting 5 mpg instead he is logging huge 6th man minutes and is a serious detriment to the growth of our team. send him away for anything. please plenty teams want big bodies but he cant stay here.

wright this kid continues to live up to his lazy, heartles, uninspired approached to the game. is he happy he isnt getting PT? does he care? on a roster this bad and depleted he cant get consistent minutes. He can go. dont need lazy bums around ruining the growth of our winning attitude

and you know i saved the best for last:
TRAVESTY “MR. 10th QUARTER” OUTLAW" this guy is a 9th man and should only get around 15 minutes a game. he only looked good because he was playing with roy, aldrdge, oden, rudy, bayless, miller, webster, batum, and camby. we’ll never have that depth because this fool cant do anything without a loaded roster and his cap hit will destroy our chances of building an elite team unless we trade him. i dont even want to waste time talking bout him. you seen him play. he plays like he can talk the talk and walk the walk but when you see his production and contract this MF must be mute and paralyzed
a list of players i would trade for the bum:
    marvin williams
    stephen jackson
    brendan haywood
    oj mayo
    drew gooden
    john salmons
    trevor ariza
    josh childress
    greg oden
    beno udrih
    francisco garcia
    leandro barbosa
please just get him out of here

He surely can’t be worse than Graham.

    yes he can

D-League is the equivalent of a second rate international league.

I believe the Julius Hodge Coefficient proves this. Hodge played three years ago in both the D-League and the Australian NBL…same season. His numbers were virtually identical, leading me to believe that the two leagues are equal.

That means that all the other international leagues like the Spanish, Italian, Russian, Greek, etc leagues are MUCH better than the D-League.

Stephen Graham would dominate in the D-League…and tell me why respected NBA coaches like Larry Brown and Avery Johnson chose Graham over Curtis Stinson? I am not a big fan of Graham’s but you guys have this exalted view of D-League players who have spent YEARS down there without a callup.

The news came a few days late. I was hoping for this the moment I heard he had a heriated disc and was in lots of pain.

Hopefully before waiving Ross, they got permission from Proky to pay for another 10 d contract. (At least 50K, more if we keep him).

Before Gaines was brought up, out of necessity at PG, they were probably looking at SF.
Now we should find out who that is? Joe Alexander? Alexander has bulked up and may be more of a PF.

    He was Avery's defensive boy.

But Avery isn’t calling the shots like he was before the DWill trade.

BKing with consultation from DWill (and Avery) probably make the player decisions.
Avery has to admit, though, that he has made some bad player decisions.

For Avery to let DWill play for nearly the whole game without any hard practice in 2 weeks, shows how things have changed.
Avery knows when to make an exception, which is why he will get along fine with DWill.

I think that would ROCK. A HUGE part of defense is OFFENSE. IF YOUR MAN ACTUALLY HAS TO GUARD YOU TOO THEY HAVE LESS ENERGY ON THE OFFENSIVE END. And JR can be a handful. I start him at the SG and if we can’t find a better sf I start him there.

if there is a training camp

expect a lot of effort to getting the two of them to play together.

Kid is 24 years old and a lot of people here (who dont understand the game) think that a back up point guard must be perfect. His pay is about the same as most backups other than those who are on rookie contracts or vets minimum.

He is capable of scoring 28 points or handing out 17 assists. How many other teams have a backup who can do that?

by Net Income on Mar 31, 2011 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

    No doubt

definitely think Farmar can play, just think that the team has other more pressing needs, that exploring ways to either clear that space for a FA wing/backup big or a direct trade. I think Gaines is more than capable at a lesser price tag.

I agree, he’s definitely more an asset/luxury for this team. He’s a good player, who’s arguably a fringe starter/solid backup on a reasonable contract, but he just doesn’t really fill a need for the Nets

This has nothing to do with Farmar. He’s a good player. But we need help badly on the wing. If watching Outlaw last night did not convince you of that, I do not know what to say.

What interests me is you say there no way Gaines could be the backup.

Yet you just said the backup doesn’t need to be perfect. Whoever it is won’t get major minutes either way. Nothing against Farmer but he’s not that much above average and we have big holes to fill with cap cloggers Like Outlaw in the way.

I have no problem going ahead with Gaines or somone else thats willing to work for scraps if it means a much need upgrade elsewhere.

    ridiculous

Sundiata Gaines has played in a handful of NBA games and yet you believe that qualifies him to the backup to an all-Star (not to mention that a fractured hip is SERIOUS).

He is a fine third string PG…period.

by Net Income on Mar 31, 2011 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

    I agree

Gaines provides a nice 6-10 minutes at best.

Farmar is a championship backup PG, finally breaking out of the triangle offense for the first time in his career. He should only improve.

Farmar can also play the two, and he could be a great weapon spotting up outside after Deron drives.

If Deron is injured, who would rather have backing him up Farmar or Gaines?

Farmar should be the correct answer. Gaines has barely made NBA teams.

    if Deron is injured

we are going to lose either way

people need to stop acting like someone is taking a dump on Farmar’s game. This isn’t about Farmar, it’s about having more flexibility

the team screwed themselves by giving Outlaw that god awful contract, and now we have to sacrifice something to get where we need to be.

Farmar's contract is not the problem here.

And people saying that paying Farmar 4 mill per year to be our back up is NOT good are delusional. YOU ALWAYS NEED A SOLID BACK-UP PG NO MATTER HOW GOOD YOUR STARTING PG IS. Injury happens.

The only problem the Nets have is Petro/Outlaw make 10 million dollars together.

There is huge void when Deron Williams is on the floor, I understand.

But if he goes down, the Nets are a more competent team.

What the Nets really need to do, like Claud said, is dump Outlaw and Petro. Even dumping Vujacic will make things easier.

Petro could be had for a 2nd rounder looking for size.

    Outlaw is the problem.

Thats not how you do it

Jordans a keeper. In the NBA you win with depth and Jordan is a quality back up. With better wings he would also be better.

Better wings makes everyone better. A Jordan Farmar is something quality teams have. If we want to be a quality team we don’t do it by getting rid of the decent parts we do have to take chances on guys who may or may not fit.

How much did the celtics pay Nate Robinson? How much is Steve Blake making? Shannon Brown? All the Laker point guards make what Farmar is making and better. He is not the problem. All energy should be devoted to getting rid of Outlaw. Lol.

i agree NI, a lot of guys are getting carried

Away by the present, backup PG was the biggest weakness in the Kidd era, farmar is absolutely essential, we know what he can do if we put the effort in coaching him to our game it would be great next year.

Last year was the worst year a team can have, it set the team back several years,
I did not realize the impacts until the after effects u notice.

For this I blame thorn, he wanted to put kiki under the bus but chose wrong approach,
We blame brook but basket ball wise he lost 1 year could be even more for the damage it might have done in terms of bad habits. That season and the fact that Thorn announced his retirement when he did made us overpay heavily.
That said having Deron shoud change all that, if luck sticks with us and we pull of some trades or deals that none of us hear dreamed about it would be great.

Kidd era should be used as a determining factor in everything we do

Farmar probably isn't going anywhere this summer because first we have to be sure that Gaines is fully recovered and see what he can do.

Farmar because of his $4 million salary, can be valuable in a big trade before next year’s trade deadline. He is desirable plus Nets would need some salary to help match a player coming in. Hopefully Gaines will be up to speed by then.

We’re not exactly winning anything this year so if we’re going to bring in a d-leaguer, makes more sense to me to audition the players who have higher upside. And maybe the Nets brass decided that West is that higher upside player, who knows, but if this is a move to help win games this year, that makes no sense at all because it’s just not going to help.

I’m just saying West has been given several opportunities and has done nothing. I understand you have guys like Sundiata Gaines for example, who don’t always succeed the first try (or three) and eventually prove themselves, but I still think you’ve got a better chance at getting lucky with the younger guy who hasn’t really had the chance yet. Also, let’s not forget Reynolds was a first team all-American. Not that college success necessarily translates, but we know he could not only play, but dominate at that level, it’s worth seeing what he can do at the higher level.

If the Nets had better defensive players there would be less fast break points

If the Nets had better defensive players there would be less layups and dunks which are the main contributors to a high FG%

by muwu on Mar 31, 2011 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

if the Nets had better FG%

there would be less fast break points. the fast break is nearly impossible to defend well, especially considering who is running the court for that team.

every team gets beat by the fast break. our goal as a defense should be to play against a half-court offense.

did you see how well the Nets played in the first half last night?

    4 turnovers
10 point lead at the half
    8 turnovers in the 3rd q
    Knicks took the lead
When players get the ball in easy positions to score they are more motivated on D
Brook for example had a great .comqst half on O and D cuz he was scoring
He didn’t get the ball in the 3rd and the team suffered

We werent’t going to go get Wilson Chandler, this doesn’t matter that much, whoever we would have picked up wasn’t going to be a difference maker. The draft is when our real moves will start. But it does continue to show money isn’t an issue finally and the front office is awake. But West is a really good wing defender and strong, looked athletic when I used to see him with Atlanta.

What's lost in the chatter last night is the fact that

The Knicks 3 stars had to combine for

95 points on 54% shooting to beat us by a measly 4 points. They all topped their season averages in points & FG% (except Amare who scored 2 less than his average, made up by Billups who doubled his average)

    A gimpy wristed D-Will, a mono-weaked Lopez, and a non-existent SF almost beat them.

Correct. And if we had a minor upgrade of Kirilenko, we win easily.

Knicks aren’t going to be able to improve much in off season. They have to focus on center position and re-signing Billups to some HUGE multi-year contract.

I say minor, because some people here are thinking Nets wouldn't be able to make any other off season moves if we got AK.

Getting Chandler, for example, would be more costly.

Getting AK would leave open the possibility to get another SF type All Star wing later on.

We wouldn’t expect big minutes from AK, but he could always be used at PF.
Either way, AK would take away Outlaws useless minutes.

Since AK is injury prone (getting reduced minutes with Utah at present) his pricetag should be less.
BTW, AK just turned 30 last month. Most people think he is older.

Does anyone have any impressive footage of Mario West?

I recall the name, but I am wondering if Nets took him, instead of a SF, because they plan to shut down DWill (use Uzoh at the point more).

I wonder if they would be considering extending West or Uzoh for next season, thus cutting into the 18+ million of cap space now projected.

People talking about this "pointless" signing...

Ross was a pointless player. There are barely any games left. We’re not making the playoffs. This guy was a gutsy player on his other teams, if offensively limited.

People said “Gaines who!?” When we signed him, and he ended up being solid. This guy could end up being a nice rotation player if he performs. It’s a tryout, just like Orien Greene. We didn’t like Greene, we dropped him. We liked Gaines, we kept him.
