Hey y'all, big Nets fan here, first time poster. I read NetsDaily on, well, a daily basis (harhar), and always like to read what you guys have to say about the direction of this team. So I thought I might put a few observations out there, get some input from fellow Nets fans, who I still can't believe actually exist.
Considering the thorough drubbing we took last night, I thought that the team showed some really nice energy. We crashed the glass, and really had a good flow going offensively. Being that Deron came back to play this game, obviously, this wasn't coincidence. That being said, don't know about everyone else, but even went we went up 16, I just had this feeling that we still weren't going to pull this one out. Call it the chronic pessimism that stems from being a Net fan, but the defense was just SO porous. Giving away layup after layup, letting Anthony freakin Carter penetrate and create for Shelden freakin Williams, and Carmelo blowing by Outlaw/Morrow so consistently. It was just going to be tough to sustain the offense at that high a level, because we played the game at their tempo with, lets face it, a much lesser roster.
I love Morrow, think dude's a killer, and he always leaves it all out on the floor, same goes for Humphries. But there are so many instances where he gets beat off the dribble by his man, and it was downright sad when he was trying to cover Carmelo tonight. The combo of him and Outlaw defending the wings is awful, quite possibly the worst in the game right now. Morrow needs to be paired with a lockdown perimeter defender if he's going to remain a starter, an area that I think the Nets absolutely have to make a priority this offseason. The perimeter defense is atrocious when they're on the floor together, and I feel that it's a big reason why Humphries and Lopez are so exposed when they're forced to protect the paint on every single possession. When the other team's wings are getting into the paint at will, can't expect those two to contest everything without getting into foul trouble. The 3 spot is so critical defensively with the makeup of our starting lineup right now. Ideally, I'd like to see Morrow as an elite 6th man scorer type, and Outlaw as an elite towel boy type. All jokes aside, though, I think Outlaw, despite never being able to justify his contract, can be a decent to good stretch 4 off the bench. That's the perfect role for a guy with his skill set. Guy's just not a starter, point blank. Oh, and no more giving the ball to Sasha, can't stand watching the guy chucking line drives with a man in his grill.
It'll be interesting to see how we plug these holes in the offseason, but, on the bright side of things, watching the energy on this team when Deron's on the floor gives reason for plenty of optimism. The offense was, for the most part, fluid. Just need to feed Lopez on the block early in possessions. Guy was an absolute beast early on. An offseason to gel, get some fresh talent in there, and a healthier D-Will, and we're on our way. Let's go Nets!!
