"Jubilation in Newark"

It's already going viral... on NBA.com; NBC Sports, Basketball Jones, Yahoo!  and ESPN.  YES Network cameras caught a young Net fan's reaction as Deron Williams hit the dagger against the Celtics Monday night. As Ian Eagle crowed, "Jubilation in Newark!"  Even D-Will took note on his Facebook page. "Hilarious", he wrote.

And last night put me in Big Baby’s corner for the Nets. 7.5M starting for Hump and Baby. AK will have to take what is left if he wants the Nets.

by rundmc00 on Mar 15, 2011 7:50 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Anybody could be

Not like anyone knows for sure. Big Baby would be an alright backup, but for no more than 5-7 million a year. 5 years, 25-30 million.

Draft upper classmen wings. Start Morrow and hope James develops.

by rundmc00 on Mar 15, 2011 8:12 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

That is assuming that Hump keeps up this level of play

And that Brook does too. As well as staying healthy. One of those two slip and you’ve suddenly got a pretty thin froncourt when it comes to the playoffs

by muwu on Mar 15, 2011 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions

8 Million for both. The cap is 19 million for 7 players at present.

Hump was interviewed on NBATV and he really appreciates how DWill has helped him.

Hump wants to return. How about 5, 5.5, 7 million over 3 years for Hump. Let it increase in 3rd year if possible.

Maybe the thought of Nets getting West and Big Baby will get Hump to sign sooner.

Big Baby was getting 3 million and Boston doesn’t seem to want him back. DWill will have to convince Big Baby to take a discount to come to Nets. Baby isn’t a starter, so I don’t think any team will offer him starter $.

yup

not a difference maker, duplicates Hump

by Fr@nkl1n on Mar 15, 2011 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Well it often comes up because people are pointing to Hump as the difference maker

While Hump is a great rebounds/finishing guy, he doesn’t fulfill our need for another go to guy. When it comes down to the grind of the playoffs, the Nets will be awfully easy to stop if all they have to worry about is Deron and Brook.

We most definitely need another guy that can perform at a near allstar level, even in the playoffs. Not many guys in FA fulfill that criteria. Not Jeff Green, not Wilson Chandler, not Shannon Brown. As relatively old as they are, Z-Bo and west fit that and Nene as well.

Even if it means having Hump as a 6th man, we need a difference maker

by muwu on Mar 15, 2011 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Duplicates Hump?

So you’re looking for a front-court player who doesn’t rebound and doesn’t bring energy?

Could anyone have said on draft day whether he would shed the pounds? And he still hasn’t. He’s got a lot going for him that he’s in Boston with guys to cover for him or divert attention to give him easy shots.

And it's not crazy to think either that Pierce, Allen, and KG would take minimum salary deals so that Boston can get talent in there

You could have Dwight, KG, Pierce, Allen, and Rondo. Sure KG and Pierce and Allen would be somewhat broken down by then, but that’s still formidable, especially on defense

I don't see how Boston can clear cap space (for DH) without losing the players that got them to be an elite team.

Ray Allen should retire after next year.

Boston needs to clear cap space just to re-sign KG if he returns in 2012.

The new CBA may prevent teams like this years Boston – $81 million in salary.

With the excess of a hundred million that KG’s earned, I don’t think him or Allen would have any issues playing with a minimum contract

by muwu on Mar 15, 2011 9:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe BABY is an Unrestricted FA this time.

I don’t think Boston is going to be a top 3 NBA team next year, so Baby would be wise to leave.
Boston isn’t the type of team to out bid other teams. They are used to players taking a discount to play there.

Baby would be wise to listen to DWill and accept 3 million from Nets to back up Hump.
Baby needs to realize that it will be more fun for him playing for a rising playoff team that is “movin on up”.
Nets fans will cheer for Baby.

by jerry25 on Mar 15, 2011 8:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't see why Boston would drop off

Allen keeps himself in excellent shape, and he’s still as good as ever. Pierce is also playing as well as ever. Rondo is still so young and is as good as ever.

heard on a podcast

that Garnett is thinking of retiring at the end of this year. I doubt it happens but if he is at least thinking about retirement he is not going to be negotiating a new contract after his current one has expired. He has played a lot of minutes since coming in from high school.

He is an unrestricted FA. Boston is well over the Cap. Most people don't believe there will be a MLE to pay him with.

KG probably plans on playing a few more years and I’m not sure Boston (or anyone else) views Baby as playing starter minutes.

Hopefully the new CBA will dethrone most of the elite teams and OKC, Clippers and Nets will rise.

by jerry25 on Mar 15, 2011 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with getting Big Baby

He would be a good 3rd big off the bench because of his size and scoring ability. I think it would be hard to pursue ZBo or West and still be able to re-sign Hump. Another benefit to pursuing Baby is that if Dwight should happen to land on our team, we at least have a good option to compliment him in the frontcourt. Hump would not be nearly as effective next to a guy like Howard. If Baby is out of our range, I would also look at Carl Landry before West or ZBo.

I know it would be difficult to get a scoring wing this offseason but that still remains our greatest need. Thus, I wouldn’t just look to add a big name especially if that player isn’t going to fit alongside Deron and Lopez. ZBo, for one thing, will take away baskets from Lopez thus making him less effective.

has anyone seen what this kid has been doing out there in Sacto as a starting SG???

23, 3, and 4 as a starter.

It might be worth it to check him out, and swoop in on him as a free agent

we have to get upgrades ANY way we can. I’m not sure about his defense though.

I’m just trying to figure out ways to improve on the perimeter because I honestly think our money would be better invested in building up the frontcourt(frontloaded offer to Nene, resigning Hump).

Well we need a difference maker

As good as this team can be, it’s still only 40 win team or something like that. We need a major talent upgrade. I mean, Wilson Chandler is nice and all, but will he be someone that will be a big factor in a 7 game series against the Bulls or the Heat?

We need that someone who can be a big difference maker not only in the regular season, but in the playoffs against the best the East has to offer. Stacked teams like Boston and Orlando back then already found the playoffs tough enough with all their talent, what more the Nets?

I mean if you can make a trade for a great wing, then do it. But with the assets the Nets currently possess, it’s not gonna be easy unless you can get someone for a bargain price.

I can live with DJ as a starter. I can live with Morrow as a starter. I can live with Hump as a starter. As long as the talent is there elsewhere. Much like how Miami can live with Chalmers as a starter. How Atlanta could have bibby as a starter. etc etc

If you can’t find a good defensive star, then get a good star and fill in the team around him with good defenders. Individually the Bulls aren’t the greatest defenders. But as a team and with Joakim Noah and guys like Ronnie Brewer around, they’re a good defensive unit.

Kim Hughes was in trouble, more trouble than he ever envisioned.

While working as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers seven years ago, Hughes was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

But then Hughes encountered yet another major obstacle.

“I contacted the Clippers about medical coverage and they said the surgery wouldn’t be covered,” Hughes said. “I said, ‘Are you kidding me?’ And they said if they did it for one person, they’d have to do for everybody else.”

Rondo

is the MOST overrated PG in the league. He is the product of the big three. Yes he can break down defenses and get his teammates shots, but there is no way he can CARRY a team.

He “dropped” out of Team USA, because he knew he would not get burn in international play. Rondo needs good teammates to be successful. You put Rondo on the current nets team and take out Deron, and we might not win 12 games.

by danxcr on Mar 15, 2011 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

rondo is an excellent PG

all he needs is a mid-range jumper….

the great PGs are great shooters...

or they figure out how to be. Steve Nash is an excellent shooter. Jason Kidd became an excellent shooter.

its such a necessary asset to a PGs offense, because, as made evident by D.will, you can give Rondo 10 feet of space, eliminating his speed/ability to get to the rim… no more quick dishes in the paint, no free throws as a result.

i’m reading a little too far into it, but its never been a secret that rondo has no outside game

I am serious

I think this offseason Josh Smith will be made available. I do not see the Hawks getting past anybody in the 2nd round. And they have commited a lot of money to the 3 (JJ, Josh and Horford).

Their ownership will want to dump salary this offseason and Josh Smith is going to be the odd man out. He would be another great fit next to Deron, and Brook Lopez. And might cost less than trying to outbid Boston for Jeff Green. I am not saying not to go after Jeff Green, even if we raise the price for the Celtics, i am HAPPY :)

by danxcr on Mar 15, 2011 10:22 AM EDT reply actions

But does that mean they will give him away for cheap?

There’s no way they can’t save money AND get a good player back in return for J Smith. We don’t have lottery picks to give away, and only role players to trade.

by muwu on Mar 15, 2011 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Morrow isn't nearly valuable enough to land J Smith

If we were trading Brook, would you be happy to get only Morrow and others in return?

by muwu on Mar 15, 2011 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Other teams couldn't make a better offer?

And no, they don’t have plenty of guys. Who would play center for them with J Smith gone? Jason Collins? The whole J Smith trade rationale is that they want to move Horford to PF. They need a center

by muwu on Mar 15, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

The bulls gave up Kirk for basically nothing

just to clear cap. If ATL wants to save money (and if the new CBA is in placed and is a lot LESS or heavier luxury tax fines) i can see be had for a bargain.

It isnt a guaranteed thing, but imagine, the Hawks getting bounced again in the 2nd round? And the ownership knows they need to change things up. They arent going to keep the 3 intact. First mistake was giving JJ that much money, but at the same time, if they didnt than their fans would of been like oh you guys gave up.

But JJ’s contract is horrendous, and Horford’s extension kicks in. I am not exactly sure what we can offer, but maybe Houston’s pick and Lakers pick, and somebody else (not sure who). They will not a PG as they have Kirk, and i do not know how they feel about Jamal Crawford, if they are going to resign him or not.

by danxcr on Mar 15, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Kirk Hinrich is NOT Josh Smith

You’re talking 2 ends of a spectrum there. That’s like comparing Brook and Outlaw (even if Hinrich is better than Outlaw)

by muwu on Mar 15, 2011 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh i agree

But isnt ATL ownership losing lots of money? They do not sell out, and constant 2nd round exits needs change. Do you think ATL would like to keep that core 3 intact?

by danxcr on Mar 15, 2011 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Even if they are

They can trade him, save money, AND get a good player in return. Would Detroit not give Greg Monroe and a pick for Smith? Would Toronto not give Ed Davis and more for Smith? Would the Pacers not heavily consider trading Hibbert for him? They can get that done and get something good in return too

by muwu on Mar 15, 2011 10:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I know - it's insane

Hump has been close to an All-Star this year. And if Avery had played him major minutes instead of showcasing Favors, he might be viewed as just a notch down from Love. (Hump’s not even averaging 27 minutes per game! He should be playing 36-38.)

by A.S. on Mar 15, 2011 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

and this is when people take it too far

c’mon Hump gets lots of rebounds but that doesn’t make him some allstar. Reggie Evans isn’t some allstar even if he can grab 15 rebounds a game.

by muwu on Mar 15, 2011 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

And Hump isn't just a rebounder either

That’s what is making him known but the guy can knock down shots from 15 feet in and has a bit more length and athleticism. You also can’t deny that he’s been outplaying some of the best PFs in the league lately. Reggie Evans is just a rebounder. He can outrebound other PFs but rarely do you see any other aspect of his game.

"The trade that usually happens is the one you never hear about" - Net Income

by imdkidd on Mar 15, 2011 1:23 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Hump is MUCH better than Evans

Evans problem is that he is a very bad offensive player. Evans simply cannot shoot the basketball — his TS% is .433 this year. Hump’s TS% is .567. There is no comparison.

Now, Hump isn’t as nearly good as Love – Love has a .597 TS% and is shooting over 42% from 3-point land – but Hump is clearly closer to Love than he is to Evans.

Moreover, getting a lot of rebounds is ESSENTIAL for this team, given that there is literally NOBODY else on the team that is an above-average rebounder (and Brook is very much below-average rebounder).

by A.S. on Mar 15, 2011 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

The last point may be the most important, BTW

We simply cannot get a mediocre rebounder at the PF like David West. The team would be absolutely crushed on the boards.

by A.S. on Mar 15, 2011 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not taking into account minutes played per game

Will a player’s rebound rate remain constant with more minutes? Dwight grabs 21.7% of rebounds of 37 minutes a game. Hump grabs 21.9% over 26 minutes a game. Will that 21.9% remain constant if you play him 10 more minutes a game?

Semih Erden grabs 26% of rebounds in 11 minutes a game. Will he be the next Kevin Love?

by muwu on Mar 15, 2011 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

and he’s averaging 15.7 rebounds per game.

I'll take the "Banger" any day!

So many NBA teams are soft and lack the Banger. We have one. And Brook is even banging a bit too. People can say we stink and say negative things. But with the Hump and DWILL around they won’t call us soft.

Was letting Rondo have it all night and Murphy when he was on the bench. Going back and forth with Boston fans.

Proky got enough money

Nets should be first team in NBA History to have 2 home stadiums. We should play half in Newark and Half in Brooklyn, that would be crazy

by CStanley028 on Mar 15, 2011 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

NBA teams used to do that in the past

When the Kings were in Kansas City, they would also play games in Omaha, Nebraska.

That would be awesome!

Half and half. Or atleast give us like 10-12 at the ROCK! Guaranteed sellouts!

To the best of my knowledge, Rondo didn't injure his ankle on a D Will cross over.

Deron actually lost the ball while dribbling and Rondo rolled his ankle for no reason.

Five great games.....

These last five games have been the highlight of my NETS season so far. A win against Chicago would just be the absolute END for me. I am thinking that 28 wins is reachable this season, but if we get really lucky, we might just steal a few more, and reach 30. I certainly want better than a 500 record at home this year. DWILL’s arrival, and Devin’s departure seems to have really made a difference in our team. AND Brook and HUMPH seem to be thriving. It’s a great time to be a NETS fan. GO NETS!

not to disrespect Devin

but Deron is not just a better player, but has that killer instinct. Is also a leader and it is showing. The whole team is responding, and i love it. I love everything about this!

by danxcr on Mar 15, 2011 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

And ironically while Devin is a faster player, DWill makes the whole team faster. No more getting into your offensive set with 10 seconds left to shoot.

Trying to come up with realistic FA possibilities,

Re-sign Hump — 4 yrs/35 mil, starting at 6 million
Sign AK — 3 yrs/15 mil, starting at 4 million
Sign Marcus Thorton — 4 years/25 mil, starting at 5 million

Deron/Farmar/Gaines
Thorton/Morrow
AK/James/Outlaw
Hump/Outlaw/AK
Lopez/Petro

Gives us a wing scorer as well as a wing defender that we desperately need.

Thoughts?

by Clayton Balch on Mar 15, 2011 11:47 AM EDT reply actions

i wish AK-47 wasn't a part of realistic speculation...

but that seems to be the case now…. i really, really don’t think this guy is the answer, short-term or otherwise

I miss the days when America was only morally bankrupt...

by Chakroot on Mar 15, 2011 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

he will be

and he will be a FO guy. Remember the Nets are also Russia’s team. And there is nothing wrong with AK. He wont cry for minutes, plays well, and has good bball IQ. He plays good defense, (really long), and help defense. Always moving on offense, and hustles…

I do not think he will hurt the team, he will help! And i expect him to take a major cut from his current salary of 17M.

by danxcr on Mar 15, 2011 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he's a great player or anything, but he would be a great fit here

and that’s usually the most important thing. He would instantly be our best defender, and also would help cover up Lopez’s rebounding deficiencies even more.
