Backup Plans

The Nets aren't in the top tier of the NBA yet.  To get there, they need help, whether it be in the form of Dwight Howard or some other guy.  But what other superstars could we get?

In my opinion, the true superstars in this league are: LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Dirk Nowitzki, Amar'e Stoudemire, Blake Griffin (maybe a little early) and Derrick Rose.

So who could we acquire? Let's break it down.

LeBron, Durant, Anthony, Wade, Bryant, Griffin, Nowtzki, Stoudemire, and Rose are completely untouchable.  So that leaves Chris Paul and Dwight Howard.  We don't need Paul.  So that leaves Howard.

So, if we need another superstar to win, we have one option, and it's a big, strong option in Dwight Howard.  But what worries me about this, is that Howard might choose somewhere else, and where do we go then? It's certainly not a given that Howard signs here, and if he doesn't we may be stuck in post-LeBron syndrome again, without D-Will OR Howard.  So we need to go to the second tier to create backup plans.

Pau Gasol, Russell Westbrook, Rajon Rondo, Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, John Wall, Manu Ginobili, Paul Pierce, Danny Granger, Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry, Rudy Gay, Josh Smith, Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer.

Gasol, Westbrook, Rondo, Wall, Ginobili, Pierce, Gay, Bosh, Curry, and Boozer either don't make any sense or are unattainable.  So that leaves us with Love, Aldridge, Ellis and Smith.

Love and Aldridge would be phenomenal guys to pick up.  However, it's extremely unlikely we could get either without giving up everything and getting very creative.  So that leaves us with Monta Ellis and Josh Smith, who should, in my opinion, be the top Nets backup plans.  We could get creative with an Ellis deal in the offseason, maybe S&T a guy like Jamal Crawford, add two picks and Damion James, and we'll have GS at least listening.  Crawford would be okay with GS because there he could put up all the shots he wants and not play much D.

Smith would be harder to pry away.  I think Atlanta still thinks they have a chance at being elite, so it would (rightfully) take a huge package.  In fact, I think he's be unattainable without dealing Lopez, and that would be counterproductive.

Another option, one that I like, is trying to deal for Kevin Martin and Luis Scola from Houston.  Houston apparently is having a fire sale, and if we called and offered up James, Morrow, two picks, and a signed and traded Kris Humphries along with a huge trade exception, I think Houston might jump at the opportunity to shed cash.  After this deal we could sign AK47 to a cheap deal and have the solid foundation to try to attract Dwight via a S&T, and still be a solid team without him.  I know Martin is somewhat injury prone but I think that has been slightly exagerrated by the members of this community.  He scores among the best of them (literally, top 10 in the NBA) and would create an outside option for DWill who could actually do other things besides shoot.  Scola is a surprisingly skilled offensive power forward who would give us great offensive firepower.  Of course, the defense would be awful and we'd need to bring in some defensive big men for the bench, but it looks nice.  We could draft Kenneth Faried for that.

PG: Williams, Farmar, Uzoh

SG: Martin, Vujacic (re-signed)

SF: Kirilenko, Outlaw

PF: Scola, Faried

C: Lopez, Petro

Would win 50 games, be a 5 seed, hopefully make the second round, and then attract Dwight and win championships.

The alternate lineup of

PG: Williams, Farmar, Uzoh

SG: Ellis, Morrow

SF: Kirilenko, Outlaw

PF: Humphries, Faried

C: Lopez, Petro

Would be slightly worse, but still solid.
