We know if Howard ever becomes available Lopez will be gone quicker than you can say "Deron", but what about other players that may become available? When do we realize that Brook Lopez just isn't that good? Watching him play is infuriating. We all know he's terrible on defense, but he isn't that good on offense either. He is basically an Ilgauskas, but worse.
He had mono! Let's give him a training camp and full season with Deron Williams! Humphries steals his rebounds! Insert excuse here!
It has only been two games, but watching the team those two games was like watching one team with the best 8th grader playing with a bunch of 5th graders against a team full of 8th graders. And Lopez is the best 5th grader.
I probably don't need to talk about his defense, but his offense is grossly over-rated. He's methodical, mechanical, and predictable. Half of his shots are wild heaves at the basket and terrible attempts to get a call. He can't pass for beans. He doesn't set good screens. He has trouble establishing position on the box and when he does get it, he has trouble keeping it. He doesn't have a strong awareness on either end of the floor.
He averaged 8 rebounds his first two years in the league. Big whoop. 8 rebounds isn't good. The Nets were the worst rebounding team in the NBA (other than the big man-less Warriors). 8 rebounds on the worst rebounding team in the NBA when your job is to control the paint is pretty awful. There are no excuses for his rebounding, other than that he's just not good at it.
He's young, has a great touch, and he'll improve. He's a nice prospect at arguably the most important position, but he's always going to move like molasses. He'll never be a plus rebounder. He'll never be a plus defender. Why should he be untouchable?
Actually he kind of reminds me of a bigger, but less talented Al Jefferson in that he doesn't play winning basketball. Not to say that he can't, as I'm sure playing with Deron will help him tremendously eventually, but the point remains.
We'll have a bunch of cap space this summer, but I would say Lopez is a pretty good trade asset. Even if we can't get Howard, shouldn't trading Lopez be something to be considered?
