Nets Assets, Post-Draft Night

The Nets dipped into their assets to acquire Deron Williams, move Troy Murphy, sign Sundiata Gaines, and trade up for MarShon Brooks and Bojan Bogdanovic on Draft Night. But they still have five draft picks, including four first rounders, over the next three years  and at least  $17.5 million (maybe as much as $20.8 million) in expiring contracts this off-season...although they've made it clear they'd like to bring back Kris Humphries.

Here are the details...

Star-divide

Cap Space:

The Nets finished the season about $870,000 over the cap after trading for Deron Williams and signing Gaines but more than $10 million under the luxury tax threshold. The Nets gave out a reported $635,000 in partial guarantees last summer which are also part of the mix: $450,000 for Stephen Graham; $100,000 for Sean May; $50,000 for Brian Zoubek and $35,000 for Ben Uzoh -- two of them long departed. The Nets also paid small sums to three players originally signed to 10-day deals: $50,000 to Orien Greene as well as $157,354, to Mario West and $204,000 to Gaines, the latter two having parlayed  their 10-day contracts into roster spots at year's end.  Gaines was signed to a two-year guarantee late in the season before fracturing his hip. Graham and Uzoh's guarantees ultimately became part of their veterans' minimum salaries. The guarantees paid May and Zoubek along with Greene' and West's 10-days counted against the cap this past season.

Expiring contracts:

As of June 30, the Nets have six players on expiring contracts totaling $17.5 million, with the strong possibility those numbers could rise to seven and $20.9 million. The expiring contracts, in descending order of size, are: Dan Gadzuric, $7.243 million; Sasha Vujacic, $5.475 million; Kris Humphries, $3.2 million; Graham, $1,106,941; Uzoh, $473,604; and West, $157,354. Brandan Wright, on the last year of his rookie contract, is a restricted free agent making $3.398 million. Should the Nets renounce his contract, which is likely even if they want to re-sign him, he too becomes expiring, bringing the total to nearly $21 million. Only two NBA teams have more in expiring deals, the Pacers and Kings. No one knows what the salary cap will look like after the new CBA is drawn, but having a limited payroll works no matter what.

Graham's contract situation deserves special mention. The Nets have a team option to re-sign Graham for 2011-12. It expires the day before the season opens, whether that's in October or January. This makes his contract, while small, an attractive piece in a larger trade concluded before the season begins. Its value can be added to a trade but the receiving team can simply waive him and save his salary. The contract originally required the Nets to make the decision on the option by July 5, but was recently extended.

The remainder of the team is either on rookie contracts--Brook Lopez ($3.08 million), Damion James ($1.24 million), MarShon Brooks ($954,000) and Jordan Williams ($473,604); or multiple year deals --Deron Williams ($16.36 million), Travis Outlaw ($7 million), Anthony Morrow ($4 million), Jordan Farmar ($4 million), Johan Petro ($3.25 million), and Gaines ($884,293). Williams of course can opt out at the end of next season and become a free agent, sign an extension, or play out his contract through 2012-13.  Also, the figures for Brooks and Jordan Williams are based on last year's rookie scale, which will also change once a new CBA is approved.

Draft rights:

The Nets hold the rights to Bojan Bogdanovic, selected in the 2011 draft. He is not expected to join the team till 2012-13 when the team opens Barclays Center.  As a second round pick, he can negotiate a contract beyond the rookie minimum.

Draft picks:

The Nets have five picks over the next three years, three of their own two acquired in trades, including the Rockets' 2012 first rounder obtained in the Terrence Williams/Vujacic deal. The Rockets' 2012 pick is lottery-protected pick.Only two other teams have two first round picks in 2012.

Here are the details:

In 2012, the Nets have their own first round pick; the Rockets' first round pick (lottery-protected), acquired in the Terrence Williams trade; and the Heat's second round pick (unprotected), acquired along with Chris Quinn. Only two other teams have two first round picks in the 2012 draft which is viewed as one of the strongest in years.

In 2013 (and beyond), the Nets have their own first round pick.

In 2015 (and beyond) the Nets have their own second round picks, having sent their 2012 second rounder to the Warriors in the Brandan Wright trade; their 2013 second rounder (plus cash) to the Timberwolves in the Bojan Bogdanovic trade and their 2014 second rounder to the Celtics in the MarShon Brooks trade.

Regarding protections:

--The Rockets' 2012 first rounder. The pick is lottery protected (1-14) through 2016. If the Rockets pick falls in the lottery in 2012, the pick rolls over each year, again through 2016.  In 2017, it would become a second round pick.

Until the Deron Williams' trade, the Nets had not traded one of their own first round picks since 1999, preferring to keep their picks and trade those acquired from other teams. (The last two first round picks the Nets traded turned into Matt Harpring and Wally Szczerbiak.)

Trade exception:

--an estimated $1.3 million exception acquired in the Deron Williams trade...if such exceptions exist in the new CBA.  It expires at the trade deadline in 2012.  There are restrictions on its use ...it can't be traded with a player for example... but they can be valuable. If the Nets wanted to trade a draft pick to, or swap picks with, a team in return for a player, they can use a trade exception to do so.  Trade exceptions can also be used to grab a player off the waiver wire if he makes less than the value of the TE plus $100,000.  The status of TE's after the new CBA remains murky.

Mid-level and Low-level exceptions:

With the Nets go over the cap, they would normally be able to use their mid-level (MLE) and low-level (LLE) exceptions, worth $5.85 million and $2.0 million, to sign and trade players in a more complicated deal. The team renounced both last summer to get room for free agent signings. It's uncertain if the MLE and LLE will exist under a new CBA or in what form.

What we need to do is Be smart with the cap space we have in the offseason
Lets get guys but dont use all the money and dont give them 3-4-5 yrs deals because it will kill us down the road.

Also lets worry about Howard when the time comes, i understand its a exciting time right now but im sorry there are alot of people who are talking about Howard already, it is what it is. Im not trying to kill the party but i believe we should worry about what we have now and how to improve Lopez Morrow James etc etc. Then when the offseason comes we worry about adding a SF and a backup PF.
When 2012 offseason comes around and howard is there then we worry about that. Ive learned my lesson with Wall,James,Wade,Amare and Melo so i dont want to get carried away with myself.

Melo Goes to NYK, Nets fans are thrilled=Who Cares anymore i guess

Look at the Cavs without Lebron

A star player that makes his team better is more important then a player that can put up 20+pts a game.

Kudos to B.King now #1 priority right now maintain flexibility to make smart and strategic moves

We are in much better shape than the Knicks and other teams to upgrade in the near future. We cannot afford another T. Outlaw contract slip up with our remaining assets, especially with a new CBA on the horizon.

Best thing to do is let the trade deadline expire, sit back and see if any buyouts are worth picking up instead of the 10 day contract options and let D. Williams perform his magic in facilitating the development of our current players. Most importantly, A. Johnson has zero say in any future personnel moves from this point forward.

When the new playbook (CBA) comes into effect, be ready, willing, and able to make quick and decisive power move a la D. William trade whether it is for D. Howard or another Top 15 player and also we can then decide on Sasha, Humphries and even B. Lopez as part of the future.

i still think king needs one more starter, morrow, hump, and outlaw would be best off the bench

i expect in the offseason they chase david west and zach randolph real hard and then look at jason richardson and jamal crawford. also deandre jordan, glen davis, and reggie evans would be great additions as well

One li'l note to add:

Li’l asterisk on the Nets 2012 pick. Yeah, it’s an asset but an unmovable one that can’t be used in any future trade. NBA doesn’t allow teams to trade their own picks two years in a row.

Opulence, I has it.

This post was not entirely corrrect about trading draft picks in back to back years....

It does not need to be your own first round picks that you are restricted to in this case. As long as you have ANY team’s first round pick (ie they have the Lakers in 2011) you are OK in trading your own pick the following year (Nets pick in 2012)

the nets need scoring and defense at the wing

TPrince plays D and has enough offense to keep defenses honest

The future is bright again for this team, awesome.

And I LOL’ed pretty hard when this article reminded me that Sean May was on the Nets for a minute.

2011 draft

i think this is key to Deron’s re-signing too.

How deep is this year’s draft?

Great job crunchtime on asset analysis....I like the fact B. Wright is a RFA this coming summer

serves twofold purpose:
1. We will get the maximum output from him in the remaining games this season. He knows this may be his last chance to obtain a worthy NBA contract this summer. The word on Wright is he possess the combination flaws of both Harris and Favors (he is often injured and plays with no passion). But he is a skilled player albeit rather meager physically. A. Johnson should give him as much opportunity as possible to fairly asses his potential ceiling.

2. More importantly, it allows us to maintain flexibility and act from strong leverage position. It should be easy to determine if he is worth the cap space and if so, we can let the market dictate his worth under the new CBA.

BTW, B. Wright looks like Kerry Kittle’s son…..hope he plays as good as his dad for us.

TO ALL MY FELLOW NETS FANS!!!!

I just wanna say that I am a long time nets fan since my cousin took me to my first game when I was 9 years old. I’m on Nets daily every single day. I just sit back and wait till something happens before I let my fingers get me in trouble by typing something negative. That’s why u guys don’t know me here. I’ll tell u one thing. I’d rather have haters rain on our parade than fellow NETS fans. Well my cousin and a lot of my family are knicks fans these days. Our FO’s move was so brilliant that they were more excited for us than they were about the melo trade to their team. Some even said they were giving up on NY. So let’s bask in our FO’s move more than knicks fans to show our loyalty. Its gonna be a good thing when we get to BK. Plenty of converted fans. LET’S GO NETS!!!!

For some perspective

The year before the Jazz drafted D-Will, they had 26 wins and were last in their division. The next year they had 41 and were second in their division.

Their roster was:

Starting 5
Deron Williams
Matt Harpring
AK-47
Carlos Boozer
Mehmet Okur

They really had ZILCH on their bench

Gordan Giricek
Jarron Collins
Devin Brown
Milt Palacio
Keith McLeod
Greg Ostertag
Kris Humphries (the 3.5 pts, 2 rebounds per game version)
Robert Whaley
Andre Owens
C.J. Miles

They had the better starting 5, but their bench was atrocious. So who has the better team? The 10/11 Nets or the 05/06 Jazz?

We should give out some big 1 year contracts

If we have 19mil in cap space
maybe we can give Humphries 9mil/ 1 yr extension
and get T Mac and VC for 5mil 1 yr a piece

They would love to play together again and with D Will and Brook holding things down. That gives us real firepower and allows us to hold onto our 2012 cap room

by Murse Mike on Feb 24, 2011 1:00 PM EST reply actions

I dont understand why people continue to want to get VC.

He is a LOSER. NO killer instinct at the SG position. Plays ZERO defense.

He had the best opportunity handed to him, playing with the MAGIC, and he LOST it.

So PLEASE stop with the VC BS and get it through your head. Kidd didnt want to play with VC why should we force DWill to?

SMH!!!!!!

I say be smart

Find out the Market for prince and the. Find out if you can add a Michael Redd on the super cheap. Last thing to go on shooters is their shot. Redd and prince also played with DWILL on that 2008 Olympic squad. At the right price those are the moves to make. And hump at three years and twenty mil sounds right depending on the new CBA.

The JETS/NETS are coming!

Thank you so much

I have been wanting to get all the draft pick clarifications cleared!

I am VERY against Lebron, completely ignoring the stats. He ruins teams, despite what his great stats say. I dont care what anyone says, he ruins teams. - anonymous nets fan

New Player Salaries are out and include latest acquisitions

Storytellers looks good and includes the Knicks/Nets deals.
http://www.storytellerscontracts.com/

ShamSports still has some missing salaries.
http://www.shamsports.com/content/pages/data/salaries/knicks.jsp

You can see from the Knicks salaries that they would already be at just over $60 million for 2011-2012 by keep Billups 14.2 million, rather than buying him out for 3.7 million and not having a star PG. It should be assumed that Fields would be kept at 0.79 million. Knicks would have 8 players contributing to that 60+ million and even and any additional players would have to been minimum salary players, if the current CBA was applied.

Knicks would have to wait until 2012 to sign a star, and even then they would probably have to take a huge discount and let Billups walk along with other players.

Nets of course are in better shape. Ric Bucher said pretty much the same thing in an argument with Chris Broussard.

by jerry25 on Feb 24, 2011 3:38 PM EST reply actions

Outlaw and Petro contracts are so ugly

over 10 mil every year for 10 pts and pathetic shooting off the bench. It wouldn’t be so bad if we were already over the cap, but since we’re trying to sign FAs with cap space, we better hope that they decide to retire

by Murse Mike on Feb 24, 2011 10:55 PM EST up reply actions

Theory

Virtually every front office move the past three years has been a disaster. Or when it was good, like drafting Anderson and CDR, they screwed it up later by trading them away for nothng. It’s good to see the in -season trades this year have been respectable. Actually if you look back, the in-season trades have been uniformly better than the offseason trades and free agent signings. Maybe they should stick to the draft and inseason trades.
