The crucial point to start Nets' misery

In my opinion, the first mistake made by the Nets' Front Office last summer was not accepting the trade that would have sent us Michael Beasley in exchange for Keyon Dooling.

Our basis of a promising young core would have been much more impressive saying we had Harris, Lopez , the Nr.3 draft pick AND  Michael Beasley (who is dropping super stats for the Wolves)..

I think me might have had a better chance at a top free agent with Beasley on our roster.

Of course, after that there were some other bad mistakes, we all know. Not to mention the 35 mio. $ for Outlaw.

But I really think passing on Michael Beasley was the crucial point in that whole story. I almost blame that move for all our problems we are having now. Even if everything would have played out like it did now, we at least had Michael Beasley's services available.

Not sure if you can blame all our problems on the failure to make that trade – however – the value would have been great and he could have at least played minutes for us and prevented us from having to sign Outlaw to that contract.

But you make great points with the youth movement discussion – and I think this is precisely why the Nets should be looking seriously at trading for Gallinari, Felton, and OJ Mayo. At least it provides continuity to what we have been looking to do.

At some point though, I think a front office can look so bad that every other GM looks to take advantage of them and only offers them far fetched trades under the assumption that they are dealing from a weak hand and is forced to trade. Unfortunately, I think we have reached that point Monday night.

How was that a mistake?

Number 1: The Nets were in a cap space race for the LeBron chase, they weren’t going to ruin a chance at LeBron for Beasley

Number 2: No one could or can tell even now how Beasley will pan out long term. Sure he’s scoring fine now, but he isn’t doing much else. His defense is still as bad as ever, and he constantly talks to himself. Excuse the Nets and everyone else in the league if they don’t leap on someone who’s had difficulties finding a position in the NBA while dealing with pot issues

Actually, thinking about the fan post about the failure to deal Dooling for Beasley as the start of this team’s problems….got me thinking.

I would argue that the mystery and all the drama surrounding Proky becoming the owner and what he was going to do with this team (from a management perspective) was where all the problems came from. Think about this for a moment – I believe it was the middle or end of April before Kiki was informed (via a Proky radio interview) that he had been fired. And then Thorn kind of hung around in the balance for a couple of months unsure if he was going to be resigned.

That uncertainty in the front office led to us getting into the coaching search late – as Thorn wasn’t going to do anything until he knew what his future held. We missed out on even interviewing Tom Thibedeu who was the Celtics defensive coach and now a coach of the year candidate in Chicago.

It led to us having to bring in a name brand coach like Avery Johnson and giving him input into personnel decisions (that never works well with coaches) and then having to find a GM (like King) who was virtually out of the league and was fine with taking a GM job where he was more a figurehead than anything (as the ownership group and coach would ultimately call the shots).
