Nets Sign Rookies, Camp Invites

NetsDaily

The Nets have announced the signings of their two rookies, MarShon Brooks and Jordan Williams as well as three Springfield Armor players, Dennis Horner, Jerry Smith and JamesOn Curry, as training camp invites. (A fourth Armor player, Jeff Foote signed with Portland).

All were on the practice floor at the PNY Center as training camp opened at Friday.

Brooks, the Nets first round pick, will earn $1.1 million and Jordan Williams, a little less than a half million. Camp invites are paid under a different system. If any of the three look good, the Nets can sign them to guaranteed, partially guaranteed or non-guaranteed player. Only Curry has NBA experience.

Just wondering, why are you willing to give up on Dwight when everything is pointing towards him wanting to come here.

You said it with Melo last year.

He wanted to end up on the Knicks and he did.

CB said NJ is Dwight’s number one option. Is this really so far fetched as everything has said that Brooklyn and LA have been his top two options since the D-Will trade. We just did not know the order.

Now we do.

I dont get it either especially from Killa

when his stance is that the players always end up wherever they want to which was his point before because we though Dwight preferred LA to BK.

if it was more than CB I would believe

Melo had more than one person saying his destination was the knicks

it so much against the nets. it always made more sense for the Lakers.

I will be honest when I woke up I was like I guess I was wrong then when I read the story I was like oh nothing happen.

plus hearing that Orlando doesn’t like this offer only assure me he will be a laker.

they are not looking for cap space picks or a young player?

okay either Gasol or bynum and odom for hedo and dwight

by killa kadafi191 on Dec 9, 2011 5:17 PM EST up reply actions

We heard a lot of times that Denver disliked the Knicks offer too.

It is not just one person as it has been reported throughout that LA and BK are his top two choices.

We just assumed LA is number one.

We have a lot more evidence suggesting he wants BK over LA because there is none for LA.

In light of the fact that Woj did not deny it and that nothing has come out denying it, I think we should accept it for now or at least end the assumption that LA is number one.

Orlando is just being stubborn

They don’t want to admit they lost.

My take on the situation is that Dwight gave them 7 years of his career to get it done. They didn’t. Valiant effort on Orlando for trying to put a good team together around Dwight. They failed. It’s time to move on. He gave them 7 years, that’s not enough? lol

This is also the reason why i wasn’t mad that Lebron left Cleveland. I was mad at HOW he did it lol but just like Dwight…. he gave them the years and loyalty to get it done and they didn’t.

7 years is a long time, time to let him move on to something bigger and better. BROOKLYN!

Nets tycoon urges Putin to replace Medvedev and lead Russia to fair elections

MOSCOW — Russian tycoon and Nets basketball team owner Mikhail Prokhorov called for Russian president Dmitry Medvedev to step down so that Prime Minister Vladimir Putin can assume the presidency.

Medvedev “could effectively lead the Duma, making it a ‘place for discussion’ and center of legislative initiative,” Prokhorov wrote on his blog late Thursday.

This would make Putin, the leader with higher political support, the country’s acting president and allow him to lead the country toward fair elections in March, Prokhorov wrote.

Putin chairs a committee that may or may not approve the request of Polyus Gold, part-owned by Prokhorov, to move its registration to the UK.

posted this at bottom of last thread

2012 offseason

Deron $17.8 mil
Morrow $4 mil
Petro: $3.5 mil
James: $1.3
Brooks: $1 mil
J. Williams $0.8 mil

Nets Amnesty Outlaw, and Farmar opts out as expected. Renounce lopez rights (not saying this is best move, just for sake of argument).

$28.4 mil in committed salaries.

Nets sign Nene to $16 mil contract
so $44.4 mil committed.

Salary cap around $58 mil. So Nets would be $13.6 under cap, if Nets stick to all 1-year deals to fill out roster. If Nets shed Petro contract with a dump + pick then Nets would have $17.1 mil in cap space (enough to sign Dwight outright?)

I may be missing the point of cap holds for min players, but it can be argued that every Net can be shed if Nets want to clear cap room to add Dwight next summer…and Nets could add Howard to a core of Deron, Morrow, and either Nene or Lopez?

We talk to Fagan about Nene. Fagan tells us if we sign nene, we wont be able to get Dwight. We ask if we have a shot at Dwight. Fagan tells us we are his first choice. We then go to the Magic and push for a deal. They suspect something is up and here we are

Just yesterday we thought we were getting nothing, and therefore DWill would leave.

as we saw during FA 2010...

salaries can be dumped…trades made, etc. to clear cap room.

I agree…Nets would be only legit suitor if Dwight reaches FA 2012…which gives them leverage. Dallas may try work their way into the discussion as well.

Nets may be able to get away with NOT tanking this season completely…then shedding a couple of contracts and doing some trades and STILL be able to sign Howard & Deron next summer. Would definitely be more risky.

by BKNfastbreak on Dec 9, 2011 5:28 PM EST up reply actions

I am a big believer

in the saying that everything happens for a reason.

If this tampering BS prevents Nets from getting D12, maybe it’s for a reason – Nene will have a breakout year, if signed with the Nets. He will play a major role on this team, and I would predict 18 and 10 from him on a nightly basis. D-Will is a REAL point guard, and there aren’t major ball-hogs such as Melo, JR Smith, Billups, Al Harrington, or any of the other chuckers he played with in Denver. I think he will shine! Plus, we will still have Brook, who I expect 23 and 8 from.

Just saying.

2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said

by bronxbombers2 on Dec 9, 2011 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, and I don't understant why the Nets signed Marson before the free agency signings are over?

Nets cap hold is less than $500,000 so Nets are forfeiting $600,000 to sign Marshon?
JWill’s salary is about the same as the cap hold, so it makes no difference.

Nets would now have 10 players under contract.

by jerry25 on Dec 9, 2011 5:29 PM EST reply actions

maybe they know they won't be part of

trade and want them to have a full camp? If Dwight thing drags on…these guys may be part of the core rotation.

by BKNfastbreak on Dec 9, 2011 5:32 PM EST up reply actions

The extra 600,000 could be very important in say signing Hump.

Once Nets are over the cap, they can still sign Marshon.

My understanding is that 2nd round picks don’t count against the cap yet (if CBA is the same).

by jerry25 on Dec 9, 2011 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

You may be right...

I did a calculation last night and I think Nets would be within $1 mil of the cap…depending on who was traded. I think I included Farmar leaving. That $600K may come into play.

I just can't bring myself to believe the tampering charges

Would Otis Smith really want to get his good friend BK suspended?

Would the Magic really want to take the Nets out of contention and be left with low ball offers from the Lakers?

BK waited for permission from the Nuggets last year to talk to Melo, could he have gotten that much dumber by then?

If the meeting did happen.. is there a member of that meeting stupid enough to leak the word out?

How reliable is Berger? If he is, that explains why BK is so quiet. What also makes me think Dwight’s coming here is because him and Nene share the same agent. Fegan can tell Nene to wait, cause if we get Dwight, and don’t sign him, Nene can always go back to the Nuggets.

Amensty provision

If we are to sign Nene….how much cap space would we have left once we amnesty outlaw?

by lezosamis on Dec 9, 2011 5:56 PM EST reply actions

yeah based on the offer we were to give Nene ( 60-65)

by lezosamis on Dec 9, 2011 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

We'll have between 2.5 and $3.5 million depending on his first year if cap is $58 million

If he starts 2011-12 at 13,500,000 and gets 7.5% raises each year, that’ll be around $60 million. 14,500,000 for the $65 million mark over four years.

Stern is finally doing us some good

2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said
2011-2012 = make the playoffs without hindering future flexibility
2012 off-season = sign the second All-Star
2012-2013 = make a run for the championship

Mission accomplished thus far.

by BigTom on Dec 9, 2011 6:05 PM EST up reply actions

They should send Bynum to a third team

While Gasol and Odom are also sent to either Hornets or Rockets. And then they should send Okafor to Lakers to effectively kill off their chances of Dwight trade.

Here is what I think

THE LAKERS LEAKED THE TAMPERING CHARGES.

They want to buy time for a way to get Paul so they can then get Dwight. I think its more then a coincedence that the 2nd team was HOUSTON, you know the other team that is in limbo with the Lakers. The Lakers dont want the Rockets to then go and sign Nene and fall out of the Paul talks.

It’s because Nene and Dwight share the same agent. Fegan’s probably waiting to broker the Dwight deal, then he’ll work on Nene. The Nuggets will definitely want him if we can’t get him and Dwight, so he can afford to wait.

The rules of the NBA dictate that a team can not be investigated for tampering unless another team files the charges.

Pretty sure that we get away scott-free

Magic have to file tampering charges in order for us to get punished. Same thing happened with Pat Riley & Lebron (while Lebron was in Cavs), and Cavs never filed tampering charges. After that, we all know what happened.

by DarkXaero on Dec 9, 2011 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

Here:
95. What is tampering?

Tampering is when a player or team directly or indirectly entices, induces or persuades anybody (player, general manager, etc.) who is under contract with another team to negotiate for their services. The NBA may impose stiff penalties if tampering is discovered, however the league’s practice has been to wait until a team lodges a complaint before investigating (but that’s not to say they don’t continue to monitor the leauge and won’t take action independently if they discover that tampering has occurred). Here are some examples:

The Miami Heat were discovered to have tampered with Pat Riley in 1995 by negotiating with Riley while he was still head coach of the New York Knicks. The Heat “settled,” and avoided league-imposed penalties, by compensating the Knicks with $1 million and their first round draft pick in 1996.

After Will Perdue left San Antonio in the 1999 offseason to sign with Chicago, he commented to the press about the possibility of the Bulls signing Tim Duncan and/or Grant Hill in 2000. The league considered this to be tampering, and issued Perdue a warning.

You may have noticed that when general managers and other team personnel talk to the press, they are careful to avoid talking about specific players who play for other teams. They do this in order to avoid tampering.

The facts are that Bynum is a much better defender and rebounder than Lopez. Yes, Brooks offensive numbers are higher but also don’t forget part of that is because he had NO ONE else on those teams that could score. Bynum has Kobe and Gasol to decrease his PPG.

by yanksdevsjetsnets on Dec 9, 2011 6:36 PM EST up reply actions

You could also argue that Brook had to focus all his energy on offense because no one else could score.

How much will Bynum’s defense decrease from the strain of being a number one offensive option?

7.6 rebounds per game for Lopez (inculding year with mono), 17.4 pts per game, 82 games per year… including rookie season

I’d rather have Lopez easy

If he is so good

then why wouldn’t the Magic have traded Howard already? I find it odd that they almost seem to be waiting for the Paul circus to die down until they make a move. Meaning they are waiting to see if Bynum is traded or not and if he isn’t then they will send Howard to LA? Just a thought.

Last Lakers Nets game

Do you remember the last Lakers Nets game? I’m sure the Nets lost, I but I distinctly remember NONE of any of the Lakers’ bigs including BYNUM could even touch Brook. Brook was on fire that night, and I also distinctly remembered Kobe giving praises to Brook that night. Bynum was also frustated that night. The fact is we haven’t even scratched the surface Brook’s potential. Sure Brook regress last year but that was a 50% healthy Brook. And when Deron joined our team, Brook was just about 90% healthy and you could see the true potential. When was the last time Bynum had a 30 point game???

Even if we did tamper

What do the Magic really hope to get out of it? The player’s union will never let Stern ban the Nets from signing Howard as a FA. The only tampering allegation that I know of that benefited the team filing the charge was when the Heat signed Riley after he resigned from the Knicks with a year left on his deal. The Knicks got $1mil & a first round pick from the Heat. Throw in some cash & a third first rounder & be done with this silliness.

Interesting side note… on my way home from work(in Boston) a guy called into the local sports radio station when they were discussing the NBA and how to stop the super teams that seem to be forming, and to get to his point, which was that the real problem is player to player recruitment, he said that he was recently in Turkey…

He said on the plane he sat next to Amy Williams, and he was raving about her and Deron, and how nice they seemed. But he said she was talking about all sorts of things, ranging from their kids, and then to the Olympics, and then a lot about Dwight Howard, specifically the relationship Deron had formed during the Olympics.

We pretty much knew all this already, but it was really cool to hear some guy from Boston who randomly met Mrs Williams on a plane before this Dwight rumor went crazy.

Why does Broussand have to be part of the News each time?

Yesterday he was saying all day on ESPN that Lakers would find a way to get Howard form ORL (since CP3 was already signed). With all the owners watching ESPN, they got infuriated with the thought of the Lakers building another Super Team. Had Broussard SHUT up, Stern might not have stopped trade.

Today Broussard says he has 2 sources that Proky, BK and Dwight met in Miami last night.
Obviously, Proky was in Russia and DH denies any meeting. That means that Broussard’s source was wrong.

Well look what happened to the T-Wolves (for something arguably less egregious)

From Wikipedia:

“Timberwolves salary cap scandal
Following the 1999–2000 season, it was discovered that Smith was involved in a salary cap–tampering scandal involving Timberwolves executive Kevin McHale. Smith was allegedly promised a future multi-million dollar deal if he signed with the team for below market value, allowing the team to make some additional player moves in the short term. The league later found out about this violation and voided the last year of the contract, also severely punishing the Timberwolves by taking away five first-round draft picks (though two of the picks were ultimately returned) and fining the team $3.5 million.2 The move hurt the Timberwolves in the long run, as while the team still found success, the lack of draft picks set the team up for their eventual failure in the mid-2000s.”

by nynjlawyer on Dec 9, 2011 7:12 PM EST up reply actions

It's not up to Howard

If the Nets want to contact a player that is currently under contract with another team, they are more than welcome to do so, assuming they get the teams permission.

Its looking more and more like this is all completely false. I really want to see the Nets stick it to the Magic after the trade goes through and get back their draft picks they sent over as a penalty for the false claim. That would be bitter sweet!

Wow, It's going to be a wrap for Stern; who can possibly be the next commish??

bq.

Now, Stern has apparently ceded to public backlash, as the three teams re-engaged in talks on amending Thursday’s deal in a way Stern could accept, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Friday. Now, the job of these three teams is to shake up the deal just enough for Stern to be able to save face and approve it. The basketball experts at the league office are mandating the Hornets gather younger players and draft picks for Paul. Somehow, they believe that solidifies New Orleans’ basketball future in a better way.

bq.

This wasn’t about the best interests of the Hornets, the NBA, anyone at all. This wasn’t the NBA that Stern promised those owners in a post-lockout league, and they let him have it Thursday. After all those long days and nights negotiating the end of that labor war, it turns out it isn’t over and never will be in this NBA. This is the fight to David Stern’s ignoble finish as commissioner of the NBA, the fight that’ll never end well for the NBA. That’s how Stern’s going down, and that’s how he’ll be remembered

Im sick of it
We aint getting DH12…..CP3s trade will eventually go thru, and DH will go to his original chosen destination of LA and we will look like the whorish bridesmaid again who’s just waiting for sloppy seconds at the altar!!!! A La the melodrama

Not new on here guys. Just haven't been sharing my input the past months.

I say yes we land DH12 regardless. This is just a stall tactic for the magic as they make a last attempt to keep him. Bringing in Big Baby has no affect on DH12.

No news is good news!

I feel that we are driving this Mack truck. Making sure all is in place before we add DH12 & Nene. Think about it. Nene is the best FA and has yet to be signed.

seriously…..what is nene waiting for? LOL

SO strange that the top FA has yet to sign…

I'm telling you

Nene and Howard are both coming. I’m getting a strong feeling about that ( as is SAS). Otherwise wouldn’t he have signed with Den, Ind, or Hou to get with his new teammates ASAP.

thats highly doubtful...

for starters we would not be able to take back hedo and second we would need to ship out about $6-7mil in salary after outlaw amnesty

Farmar, James, and Petro would all have to go along with Brook and Graham

my take

Magics would like to hold on Howard as long as possible –
1) Nets draft picks would be much better without Howard for half of the season.
2) They learned from Denver regarding Melo last year – need Lakers & Nets to drive the price as high as possible.
3) Also give them a chance to evaluate Lopez.

Nets – it’s obvious, would like to get Howard before the season starts to build chemistry.
1) Try to dangle with Nene to show that they do have “other” options.
2) Do not want to repeat last year’s Melo crisis – hurting team chemistry.

Plus, Howard would like to be traded before Jan 2012 to get his “bird’s right” for the new team – so he can get his money. Who’s going to blink? If Magics wait too long (assuming the Nets save enough cap space), they would get nothing – but Howard will also lose ~30million dollars. My gut feeling – trade will happen around January 2012!

by netfan1972 on Dec 9, 2011 8:28 PM EST reply actions

It will not drag out past Jan 1st.

Dwight would be losing too much money if it does. He is going to get increasingly angrier as time passes and act out. Also, nets pick will not be that great either way but if orlando starts off strong and trades dwight and then doesn’t make the playoffs they hurt their own pick.

by tategeorge on Dec 9, 2011 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

As long as the trade

happens before Jan 1 2012, Howard will get his money!
