Sources: Mavs, Yi Jianlian agree on deal

    By Marc Stein

ESPN.com

The Dallas Mavericks are about to sign a player they've long coveted, reaching terms Saturday on a one-year contract with free-agent forward Yi Jianlian, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

(...)

Unlike Wilson Chandler, J.R. Smith, Kenyon Martin and Aaron Brooks -- who signed in China during the lockout and who will not be able to return to play in the NBA until the Chinese season ends in March -- Yi will receive his FIBA letter of clearance from Guangdong to immediately join the Mavericks because the Chinese Basketball Association's rules forbidding in-season out clauses for NBA players does not apply to Chinese nationals.

The world champion Dallas Mavericks signed Yi!

Let's see:

. Jason Kidd

Where have I heard these names before? Let me think, think!

I know what you're doing, Dallas Mavericks, and I don't like it one bit!

Your next target is Josh Boone!

Kidd and Carter past their prime, Yi now in his prime

And yet they will still be better than any Net team from the past 5 years.

Mavs taking the same strategy as the Nets...

One year signings to fill the roster or partial second year, dumping Butler, Deshawn, Chandler…

I wonder why… (Sarcasm)

Any chance of a Yi redemption?

And will be ready to start a new championship team...

hate to say but Mavs are more appealing to superstar free-agents than the Nets right now, based on winning culture, T-Mac`s opinion had a valid point…

Just hope we really end up with Dwight…

The team that has Deron is the team that has Dwight...

it all comes down to which team signs Deron to a multi-year deal…

Dwight wants to come here

we are his number 1 preferred destination, what is so hard to get? He obviously wouldn’t even consider us without Deron, so what does us being his number choice tell you?

For the 1000000000th time, if them teaming up in Dallas were both possible and something they wanted to do, WHY in God’s name would the Nets, not the Mavs, Dwight’s first option? That tells you everything you need to know.

Also, Mavs stand no chance at getting Dwight since they lack any assets to make it happen, their only chance to getting him is in free agency… and the Nets will have the cap space to sign both him and Deron. So if Dallas only hope is that he reaches free agency, yet we are his number 1 option and will have the cap space to sign him if that’s the case, then you can pretty much scratch Dwight as an option for the Mavs.

Sorry I don`t buy this...

Dwight has pointed Nets as first choice as he thought he was going to be traded before pre-season juts like Chris Paul, a lot has changed since.

Your whole point is based on the fact that Dwight is traded to the Nets before trade deadline. What if he stays in Orlando? What if we suck? What if Brook is not back in time? Lots of ifs…

As soon as free agency arrives, we have as good a chance as any other team of inking both players long term.

Then again, if both Deron and Dwight are really in sync with playing together on a championship team, they should just wait for the off-season and join Brook Lopez, along with, wishfully thinking, a rising star Marshoon Brooks.

Woj said

he’s 100% sold on the idea of building his own legacy in BKN with DWill.

The team sucking this year means and changes nothing, half the guys on our roster aren’t even under contract come summer time.

And no, my point is not based on him getting traded here before the deadline, as I ponted out to if he reaches free agency (which is the only way DAL can get him) he’d sign with us because we are his number one choice. So it’s safe to say Dallas has no chance at Dwight, since there is no way they can get him via trade.

Hope your right...

Also Deron has, so far, given signs he is planning on staying long term and his relationship with Dwight helps us a lot. But if there`s any chance Deron leaves there`s reason to be worried.

A lot can happen until trade deadline or off-season, until then I`m remaining skeptical.

One sure thing though is the Nets aren`t the same old Nets anymore.

If the Lakers or the Mavs were said to be Dwight's preferred destination

people would be saying there’s no we are getting him, etc. Yet they downplay the fact that Dwight has asked a trade here and that he has us atop of his wish list.

by Andres B on Jan 1, 2012 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly...

Cause both Lakers and Mavs are winning franchises with decades of playoff success. Nets still aren`t, when we start winning games it`ll be a different story.

Who cares about that?

We are Dwight’s first choice, what you said changes nothing about it. Clearly, Dwight doesn’t care about the past.

by Andres B on Jan 1, 2012 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

Which makes perfect sense

The fact that we are ahead of the Lakers and Mavs on Dwight’s list means he isn’t shortsighted. I mean, when committing long term, 34 yr olds like Dirk and Kobe are pretty much non factors. People don’t want to see that.

by Andres B on Jan 1, 2012 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

And since when are the Mavs

a winning franchise with DECADES of playoff success?

They’ve been good for 1 decade, and until last year they used to be mocked of because of their constant playofff failures.

I really wonder if Kiki has an unofficial role in their front office. It would explain a lot. Remember, he worked for Dallas in the past.

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah,

I don’t think Rick Carlisle or any other self-respecting coach would stand for that.

Fire Johnson and hire Van Gundy - I'm telling you Thorn was smoking something when he let Van Gundy slip away in the night.

Don`t bash Kiki...

He is an absolute class-act that did the best he could with the resources available, I consider him a hero for being the fall guy for that atrocious team, it completely ruined his whole professional career.

Blame is on Ratner.
