Best lineup after seeing yesterday's game...

I think the best lineup we could put out on the floor after yesterday's game would be...... 1) Deron 2) Morrow 3) Marshawn 4) Kris 5) Shelden........ This lineup may be a bit small at the 3. I would like to be able to put in Damion James in at the 3 spot, but I just feel uneasy when he has the ball in his hands. That turnover he had yesterday in the backcourt was ridiculous. I think Shelden played really well yesterday having some offensive rebounds and a putback or 2, he has an underrated mid range jump shot, and he is a good defensive player/rebounder. Pairing him with Kris down low would give us some nice size and skill (which we wouldn't have if we put Petro in at the 5. He's the worst.). I also like Marshawn in there as much as possible because he is the only Net outside of Deron that can create his own shot. Let me know what everyone thinks

And would like Okur to split min with Shelden

Okur starting gives us no interior toughness. With the way he plays plus his injuries, he would probably be better coming off the bench for us given his style of play.

give Okur a chance

He’s not there for interior toughness, just as Shelden wasn’t signed for his scoring.

An Okur-Hump combo is better than Petro-Hump or Shelden-Hump. I think that’s what we’re going to see eventually.

by stenpoint on Dec 28, 2011 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

I hope your right!

I would love to see Okur get back to the way he used to be. that would give us another threat to spread the floor which we desperately need after watching yesterday.

by bfjr11 on Dec 28, 2011 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

There is no way that you can start Marshon at the 3. There is no chance he can defensively handle the SFs in this league – at least not yet. Damion James is a very good defensive SF – and remember, he only played about 20 games last year. He is going to continue to improve.

What makes the most sense is to start Marshon at the 2, with Morrow coming off the bench as a specialized gunner as a 6th man. Marshon and Morrow on the floor together means you literally have zero perimeter D (DWill does not play much D either) and our bigs would get murdered in the paint with guards penetrating at will.

By Game 5 (Cleveland on New Years Day) I expect to see DWill, Brooks, James, Hump and either Petro or Shelden Williams.

by Ryan243 on Dec 28, 2011 10:23 AM EST reply actions

Morrow's playing himself to start and Morrow out of it

but it probably won’t turn out well for Marshon at 3. Lebron, Melo, Deng, etc would score 10 points and get 3 fouls from Brooks in the first few minutes. Marshon’s playing himself to start at SG though.

Morrow’s a one-dimensional jump shooter best used off the bench. We’ve all wanted to believe he’d be more than that but, that’s really as good as good as it gets. I’m also getting tired of Morrow being described as “one of the best shooters of all-time.”

by stenpoint on Dec 28, 2011 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

As it's only his 4th year

in the league, I don’t think he deserves it yet. The “one of the best shooters of all time” label was based on only his first 2 years. His 3rd year was pretty average for any good shooter. This year seeing him brick it too many times only shows how premature that label is.

by stenpoint on Dec 28, 2011 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

It would be tough having Marshon or Morrow guard the 3 position your right. I just hope James can take care of the ball and be more productive on the offensive end if he is going to start, then see Morrow come in off the bench for him. We would be small but I think we would have threats at every position basically.

by bfjr11 on Dec 28, 2011 10:38 AM EST reply actions

as long as James is rebounding the ball he'll be fine

he was awful last time, but I’m looking forward to the kind of production he gave us on DC.

ideally we’d add a SF who can make things happen like AK

by Andres B on Dec 28, 2011 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

Need a little more than that

We’re going to need a little more than just rebounding out of our 3. That means 2 of our 5 starters would give us no offensive production whatsoever with James and our 5 (unless Okur gets back into it which would be great). Also, Kris isn’t much of an offensive threat, but more of a cleanup guy (which would mean we would have Deron and Marshon as our primary scoring threats? I don’t think that would workout too well). Its not like we have Deron feeding him in the post the whole game lol, although, I do think we should run our offense through him a little more.

Brooks can't play the 3

he lacks strength

and I’m not gonna get carried away by one game which basically was garbage time all the minutes he was there.

by Andres B on Dec 28, 2011 10:48 AM EST reply actions

Not all garbage time at all

He played very well in the first half with a couple nice takes to the rim, a tough jumper, and a put back, too. Your right though, he does lack strength. It would be very tough for him to guard a 3, but he’s long. He would be able to gueard some 3’s in the league.

by bfjr11 on Dec 28, 2011 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

I know

So everything after the first quarter was garbage time? What about the nets first game? Are all of Kris Humphries stats garbage time stats because the nets were down 21 at one point? I don’t think so

by bfjr11 on Dec 28, 2011 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

they came back

which tells you about the quality of those stats

after last night’s first quarter not only we didn’t come close to the Hawks they absolutely destroyed us

by Andres B on Dec 28, 2011 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

wait..

so if the nets came back, the stats that marshon put up in the first half would now become relevant? but since they didnt come back they aren’t relevant? I don’t agree with that. I do agree with you though that all the points he put up in the 4th quarter when he was out there being aggressive are garbage time stats. The first half he was playing against the Hawks staters. The 4th quarter, he was playing against Vladimir Radmanovic, Ivan Johnson, Willie Green, Jerry Stackhouse, Jannero Pargo. Def garbage time stats in the 4th not the 2nd though.

by bfjr11 on Dec 28, 2011 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

it would help indicate they had an effect that's all I'm saying

not denying the kid played well, just not ready to insert him in the lineup because of this game

by Andres B on Dec 28, 2011 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Understandable

I gotcha..I just like the fact that Marshon can create his own shot, he is the only one on the nets that can create his own shot besides Deron. With Marshon in the lineup, it seemed like there was less standing around in the offense and more attacking the rim.

okur over shelden...

between okur shelden and petro: with shelden and petro, you know they’re not good. at least with okur, there’s a track record – we should give him minutes and a chance to prove he can get back to form, before burying him. maybe he’s in a funk, not old and slow: or maybe he’s old and slow…but let’s give him 10 games to show which is true

by jsalkin1 on Dec 28, 2011 12:28 PM EST reply actions

I'd do this:

1.) Deron PG
2.) Brooks SG
3.) D. James SF
4.) Kris PF
5.) Okur C

Brooks cant play the 3 cause he is way too small and he will be pushed around at SF. He has been playing better than Morrow so he desreves the nod.

Marshon Brooks ...

although he can shoot, I’d like to see him attack the rim more instead of settling for jumpers. And when he’s on a fastbreak, he should definitely dunk that ball to bring life to the team.

I echo Deron's comments today! We need players

Through two games already it is clearly obvious that we don’t have shooters. We do not have one shooter who can knock a shot down consistently. We could have had Vince again, there was Baron Davis, and now there are two out there that can help of Gilbert Arenas, and Nate Robinson, they would be upgrades compared to the shooters we have on the roster currently. I know teams have bad shooting games but last night was absolutely horrific! I was embarrassed while watching it with my friends. I finally got smart and turned to the Celtic game. However, the true blue Nets fan that I’am had me returning to the game for more punishment.
St. Anthony’s high school would have beat them last night.

My take

Deron and Hump start – no brainer. Brooks should start over Morrow. Brooks, hard to believe, is already a better and more willing defender than Ammo. Brooks is also a much, much better ball handler. And unless Ammo finds his shot real soon, he’s useless when he’s on the floor. It’s like playing a pickup games and daring a guy you know can’t shoot to throw it up. That’s Ammo. He doesn’t command a double team because unless it’s a catch-and-shoot, defenders know he’s not driving it to the rim.

James starts at SF for now, but if Stevenson gets himself together, I’d go with him.

The Center position gives me heartburn. Petrocious makes me ill. But Sheldon is no better. And O-fer looks sad, miserable and confused on the floor. I wouldn’t name a starting center. Just have the three of them do rocks-scissors-paper before the game and live with the consequences.

by Doesthishurt on Dec 28, 2011 4:21 PM EST reply actions

We can’t start Marshon because we need him off the bench to provide scoring off the bench. We have no one on the bench that can score consistently besides him. Morrow can’t play with that unit because he can’t make his own shot, he’s better off getting looks from deron with the first team.

by Rass on Dec 28, 2011 5:53 PM EST reply actions

that was the idea but

we need to inject offense into our starting unit with Lopez out. Outside of DWill, none of Hump, James, Petro (or Okur), and Morrow can do it. Marshon’s weakness is defense but he’s still better than Morrow in that regard as he does try. The first games showed our starting unit has a problem and Marshon in, Morrow to the bench, would be part of the solution.

by stenpoint on Dec 28, 2011 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

People say that Brooks should start over Morrow,

but he should continue to come off the bench because he is currently the only player on the secind unit who can create their own shot (besides maybe Sundiata). If we took him out of the second unit, then we would get almost no production from them.

Start MarShon at SG

Nets can’t panic and redo entire starting lineup, but I’d leave Petro in for now(he plays flat-footed instead of on his toes – it’s why he plays poor defense and can’t rebound) until Shawne Williams or Okur learn the offense – then put Petro waaayyy at end of the bench.

Brooks has to start because you can’t start 4 guys who can’t create a shot for themselves. Only Brooks or DWill have ability to make a move which can stop other team’s run. Morrow will play better coming off the bench (less pressure) and James will play better (less pressure to create a shot) at SF with 2nd scorer in lineup. Humphries will continue to get his in the usual way.

Also, Brooks won’t get all the nickel and dime calls he gets now coming off the bench. Refs will let him play a little more, if he’s a starter.

Finally, offense will become more uptempo with Brooks at SG – He is able and willing to run the court – Morrow, like Vince Carter, does not run the floor. Plus, Brooks can finish at the rim.

What this team severely lacks is...

Athleticism. When you’re less talented, you have to be able to make up for it with speed, length, hustle, defense, etc. We have no real athletic freaks on the roster, either because they never were or because they’re currently out of game shape. That being said, we need to put our most athletic lineup out there. We were killed by the Hawks, because they’re far more athletic than we are. That’s also the formula they used to knock off the slower, methodical Magic in the playoffs.

Our most athletic lineup is probably DWill-Brooks-James-Hump-Crap Center, and that’s the lineup I’d go with. Try to play pressure defense & run a little. It’s probably our only hope.

by TheNetsFan on Dec 29, 2011 8:27 AM EST reply actions

As much as I love Morrow's shooting,

Brooks should start and it has nothing to do with scoring.

Brooks even though he is a rookie has a better all around game then Morrow.

I would be ok with Stevenson starting too because we cannot be down by 10+ points at the end of the first quarter. Yeah we need offense but IMO it has more to do with our defense then offense. This has haunted us before we got Dwill. This was the theme all last year. I dont know if it is Avery or the players but we need to stop this. Dwill needs to stop forcing shots too. Let the offense flow from defensive stops and rebounding.

My starting lineup would be

Dwill
Stevenson or Brooks
DJ
Hump
Okur
