Following the Knicks
Perhaps it's blasphemy to suggest that the Nets should follow in the footsteps of the Knicks, but I just read on ESPN Insider that the Knicks may be the first in line to sign K-Mart when the dust settles from his China situation. Say what you want against the Knicks, but this season they picked up Tyson Chandler, Mike Bibby and Baron Davis, just to name a few. Now it looks like they are going after another tough veteran, Kenyon Martin. While opinions may vary on all of these guys, one thing is for sure: the Knicks are making moves. There may be some value in King's desire to let the season play out and be patient, but as a Nets fan I am really eager to see the Nets do SOMETHING. Aside from Humphries, none of the signings the Nets have made will make any major impact, except for MAYBE DeShawn Stephenson who openly admitted to being out of shape. Though the free agent market was somewhat weak this year, guys like Big Baby, D-West, Nene, Jamal Crawford, Josh Howard and even Vince Carter all could have been had but we let them pass.
As I watch the Lakers and the Mavericks struggle, I become increasingly more worried that either team will make a major play for Dwight in an effort to make a splash. I think that the Nets need to make some moves to sign some quality guys and improve the team for D-Will, otherwise we may be in trouble next year. I was unable to see the game last night because I am on vacation, but from what I can surmise, it was truly the Humphries and D-Will show. If Hump continues to play like that, he may be gone for greener pastures and a longer, more lucrative deal with another team next year. Who knows what Brook Lopez's mindset may be when he comes back. He SEEMS professional, but he may be a little ticked off with these trade rumors and want to leave himself. I could see Orlando being a major threat - if he has a chance to play alongside his best buddy Ryan Anderson and frequent Disney weekly, why not? Then there's D-Will, who I fear more and more will be leaving for Dallas. If those three guys move on, we are left with nothing more than a roster full of role players. Let's bolster the team and really try to compete. AK-47? Agent Zero? Come on, Let's Do SOMETHING!

Um
They got themselves a star, used him to recruit another, and got rid of contracts to sign another guy. That’s what we are already doing.

Yet...
the Nets only have Deron Williams. They haven’t gotten that next star and they haven’t made any splash in free agency. So, basically the Nets aren’t even close to doing what the Knicks are doing.

well to be fair the Knicks have been in rebuilding mode for the past 10 years
so it shouldn’t be a surprise if they are ahead of us in the that process.
Dont upset yourself by comparing the Nets and Knicks…

This stranger KFM has a point, but I suppose it’s a bit early to really make the call.
Losing Brook Lopez hurt… a lot… in the groinal region. But that was unexpected. Apparently Billy King is a high risk high reward guy and right now it’s all about keeping Deron. And losing Brook damaged that plan to trade for Dwight in order to keep DWill.
I agree with KFM that they should have signed someone like Nene to shore up this team this season. They could still have shot for Dwight but would have given us a better possibility to win this season (and then help us keep DWill).
I’m willing to wait and see how Billy plays it. He shocked us with the DWill trade and maybe he’ll pull another rabbit out of the hat (a Magic trick if you will… get it? Get it? Never mind.)
The most unfortunate part of all of this is that Dwight wants to come to Brooklyn and DWill will likely resign in Brooklyn to play with Dwight, but it’s too much of a chance for Billy to get them both this off season without giving up someone via trade.
I wouldn't be shocked if Brook and pretty much all our long term salary is dealt in an 11th hour deadline trade...
I could see the possibility Rudy Gay is available for the right package.
A three team with Boston could make a lot of sense for all parties.
Something where the framework was based around:
Boston sending out Rondo, the worse of their or the LAC first rounder and Wilcox or JO for Brook, Mike Conley and Petro.
Memphis sending out Rudy Gay and Conley for Rondo, Morrow, Damion James, Farmar and the pick from Boston, maybe an additional pick from us like the Houston pick.
New Jersey sending out Brook, Morrow, Farmar, James, Petro and maybe the Houston first for Rudy Gay and Chris Wilcox or Jermaine Oneal.
Probably a 4th team to take some of the smaller pieces for a legitimate younger starting small forward on a reasonable contract sent to Memphis.
Maybe Phoenix, with Farmar and James for Jared Dudley.
So essentially Rudy Gay and Mike Conley for Rajon Rondo, Jared Dudley, Anthony Morrow and a couple 1sts.
But yeah, I could certainly see something like that if Dwight is definitely making it to free agency.
