Avery: 13 of 15 Nets Ready To Go

Avery Johnson told beat writers Saturday that all the Nets, other than Brook Lopez and Jordan Williams, will be ready for action Monday when the Nets open in Washington vs. the Wizards. Lopez, of course, is recovering from foot surgery and Williams hasn't practiced after a bout of dehydration.

Mehmet Okur arrived about 1 a.m. Saturday, got 2-3 hours of sleep, but looked "OK" at practice, said Johnson. He'll play Monday. Okur said his sister, who lives in New York, nearly fainted on hearing the news of the trade. WIth Ime Udoka cut, Okur's long time uniform number, 13, is available for him. In other number news, DeShawn Stevenson will wear 92, Dennis Horner has switched from 40 to 31, and Shawne Williams is 7.

It was family day at the PNY Center, meaning Candace Parker, aka Mrs. Shelden Williams, was around while another celebrity wife (whose name must not be spoken) wasn't.

I mean even with a healthy Okur I'm not expecting a very good team, but...

How can you have us behind?:

Toronto
Charlotte
Cleveland
Detroit
Washington
Phoenix
Sacramento

I mean those teams are obviously super awful.

Then I think we could easily be better then:
New Orleans
Golden State
Milwaukee

But 30th?

a comment from that same site from a Jazz fan
That Jazz ranking is way off. We’ll win 25 games at least, and more importantly, Derrick Favors will be a 20-10 guy by season’s end, if not sooner. That’s still lottery bound, but with the Okur trade exception, GSW pick, and our own lotto pick, this team will be damn good next year.

Not sure about Favors dropping 20 and 10, but I’ve developed an appreciate for the Jazz’s GM. He’s bailed us out twice and both times imo he was rewarded well for it. They’re rebuilding very nicely. Its cool that with the Jazz entering a rebuild and the Nets trying to climb their way out of one, both GMs are smart enough to work with each other to achieve their goals.

by MrDollarBills on Dec 24, 2011 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

The Jazz GM is very smart

He avoided a potential Dwill drama where a trade was demanded. He handled the situation brilliantly, trading the superstar at the peak of his value, when an extension was NOT required in order to make a trade happen. In return, he got two number 3 picks who were big men and the team is set up very well for rebuilding.

The Jazz are the team i root for after the Nets.

And a reply from Sheridan himself
They [the Nets] were my favorite team until I was 11. I was an ABA fan. Then Roy Boe sold Dr. J., and my fanship ceased soon thereafter. But I do not hate them. They just stink, and they have for two years, and they just lost Lopez to a broken foot, hence the No. 30 ranking. If you go back a couple posts, I actually lauded Billy King for his quick move to get Okur– and get him on the cheap.

I think it's fine.

nice history lesson

but that means you go to root for the team that is the main reason the nets went from powerhouse to doormat?

He was cut as a freshman. Difficult to make any HS basketball team as a freshman.

Furthermore, he was cut in favor of a player who had a major height advantage, which is important at that age. MJ played JV, it’s not like he wasn’t out of HS basketball system period.

Memphis has every reason in the world to salary dump and then an extra one.

Problem is we can’t truly salary dump anymore.

Do we really need to keep trying to get guards? we should be trying to get

Anthony Randolph or even Tolliver for forwards’ spot. Maybe for a future second rounder.

Minny already has their 5 big rotaion, not including those guys and 6’11" Pekovic.

by bkfire on Dec 24, 2011 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

I think we still need a legit 2.

Morrow showed how he’s a liability if his shot isn’t falling and although I know that’s not often it really showed how terribly one dimensional he is and why he’s only a starter in a certain type of specific lineup.

MarShon has looked a little lost and has shown a lot of the bad traits that make some on here ooh and aah even though they should cringe and squint.

Guy is the definition of a ball stopper and doesn’t understand any other way to play.

I’m not saying he can’t or won’t change eventually, but I think he’s going to be quite limited this year and even next and I don’t see major potential where he should be nearly untouchable either.

I will say you have to love his effort on D most of the time, but even there he in general looks like the flat out bad defender he was his senior year in college and even occasionally gives up on plays.

Stevenson is a bucket of meh and shouldn’t really be playing more then around 10mpg on any type of team with actual goals of winning.

I’m not even all aboard the Mayo express, but if he could get back to his rookie and sophomore type production he’s a solid, slightly above average starter.

Again though, my real problem with Mayo lies in his cap hold and RFA status if he was viewed as a long term piece.

by vincecarter4pres on Dec 24, 2011 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

For sure.

Or it could be an entire season of Providence and then him looking identical in 2 games?

And what exactly is “all I got out of it?”

That he’s a ball stopper and suspect defender?

Cause he is.

If he ever becomes a good or really good player, it will be a result of dramatically changing his style and approach to the game, not by remaining the same and just improving and acclimating.

by vincecarter4pres on Dec 24, 2011 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

In Games 1 and 2

there were definitively two different Marshon Brooks and Anthony Morrow that showed up. I’m just saying don’t blow a fuse over one bad game that didn’t count. In game 1 Morrow didn’t play like the regular SG that camps by the 3 point line, and Brooks was hitting his shots also. In Game 2, not sure exactly what happened. And this team need more than you love fest Moiso hugging boy Mayo on this team.

Dwight or Bust

by Shameer1016 on Dec 24, 2011 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not blowing a fuse dude.

I would have gave you the same scouting report this offseason or on draft night.

This isn’t knee jerk or going crazy, it’s just honest observation and reality, games 1 and 2 of the preseason didn’t change or really even confirm what I believed they just demonstrated what I know.

Morrow is a deadly league leading shooter who’s a mediocre but not bad defender who can do little to nothing else.

On the rare occasion his shot is completely broken, he’s not just worthless, he’s a liability.

But even on nights when his shot is on, he’s more or less a one trick pony, he’s just extremely good at that one trick.

He should only be starting with an uber athletic 3 who can handle the ball and create next to him.

If not he should be coming off the bench at the 2 and the 3 for around 24 to 28mpg to be specific.

With Brooks, he’s a rookie and chances were as NBA ready as he is advertised, he wasn’t going to come in and set the league on fire.

He looked better game 1 cause his shot was falling.

He still got past people in game 2, he just couldn’t finish cause he’s a ballhog and jacks up bad attempt after bad attempt.

His jumper is solid but not great, but again, his selection is bad.

And the real concerning thing is, you give him the ball you are not seeing it again. It goes dribble, dribble, pound pound, shot clock running out, circus shot attempt, hope it goes in cause I’m a good bad shot shooter.

His defense is bad too. He’s athletic with crazy length so he should be able to excel there, but old habits are hard to break.

What he showed in game 2 was not a surprise to me, like it maybe to some of you. Expect game 2 twice as many nights to game 1.

He’s going to be inconsistent.

He’s probably going to stick in this league a long time, but not necessarily as the type of player I ever want on my team, just as a name that puts up some numbers on paper that people love for reasons unbeknownst to me.

And he’s a guy I’m never going to win the argument with when going against his supporters and apologists, just like the Jamal Crawford and Nick Young fans on here.

Cause he’ll eventually put up solid numbers and make the ZOMG hero play every once in awhile that will be all his fans point to, even though he’s hurting your team the other 88% of the time.

And I’m not saying he’ll definitely remain what I’m describing, I’m just saying, that is who he is right now and chances are he’ll just be a better version of himself in 2 or 3 seasons, not some wildly different impactful player who’s done a complete 180.

by vincecarter4pres on Dec 25, 2011 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

Ok, NOW you blew a fuse over 2 games lol

Its just too early to judge a rookie and our one dimensional player, which I agree with. I’m not saying Brooks will be a Super star, but the kid has potential to be darn good. And ALL good scorers, are high usage and volume shooter. I’m just saying don’t look to deep into 2 Pre-Season games, in a 1 week training camp. We’re lottery bound right now anyways, so I expect Brooks to get a lot of playing time and show off his game. He also looks nervous out there, and you can tell by his movement and ball handling, I expect that to change once he gets comfortable. As for Morrow, he is an ideal SG to come off of the bench and only a starter if you have a Melo or Lebron as your starting SG, I can agree with you on that, but who else do we put at the SG spot? Your just as bad shooter Mayo? or the DPOY candidate Stevenson?

Like I was saying, I'm not coming to conclusions over 2 preseason games.

In fact I’m not coming to conclusions at all, but I’m saying that likely case IMO is what I’m saying.

I watched a number of Providence games last year.

I wasn’t a big fan by halfway through the year.

MarShon was a player I had lower on my overall board but higher on our board, as in the 27th pick range.

There was nothing wrong with taking him at 25 and he might provide sick value, but he’s a ball stopper plain and simple.

Right now we need someone to score though, so that can be overlooked, we also have a lack of overall talent, so again, some of that can be worried about later.

But I wasn’t saying to play DeShawne, I was just saying our situation isn’t ideal and if it wasn’t for his cap hold and upcoming free agency I would trade Farmar and MarShon for a Mayo type and level and age player in a heartbeat and then bring Morrow off the bench as a 2 position 6xth man gunner like he should be.

I don’t think you need Lebron or Melo to start Morrow, but actually even though I’m not a huge fan, he would fit picture perfect with say Andre Iguodala.

For Brooks though, I won’t disagree, it’s early and he has some very real rookie jitters.

I also love the play where after he foolishly turned the ball over to Harrelson, he chased the play down and blocked a Landry layup.

Also love the play where he challenged Tyson at the rim and almost comes up with the clean block, gets put on his ass and jumps right up like it’s business as usual.

The kid has a pretty good attitude, a good skill set, a couple things he stands out at, he’s long and wiry and athletic, I am just not a fan of his actual style of play, I don’t think it leads to wins, even in a limited role.

I think you’re misreading what I’m saying.

I am not saying, MarShon Brooks sucks, he’ll never put up numbers.

I am saying I don’t like his game much at all and he has the looks of a Jamal Crawford type which will make some people label him as a great player and steal of the draft, where as to me Jamal Crawford is a guy I almost don’t want on my team for free in ANY ROLE, ever.

Right now while he’s a rookie and on rookie contract, I hope he tricks the eye and becomes a valuable trade chip and then I’m selling high, that is all.

I'm just saying you observed a boat load

and I’m not surprised at Brooks game at all because he averaged like 35 PPG in college, and just like most scorers in the NBA, there ball stoppers. Not that the NCAA level is even close to the NBA level, but Brooks overall stats are pretty nice as a scorer. I’m not selling the kid short, and the only way for him to get better is to see how he plays with no limits, and then try to mold him into the player he can either become or that you want him to become. But, I don’t expect the Nets to do it, we might be gone before he ever becomes a decent player or a good player.

This crap says his best case is Nick Young? Trade his behind now, if that his ceiling.

vincecarter...

With all due respect, how can you say Brooks is a ball stopper?! that is utterly ridiculous to claim by watching him play a total of 30 odd minutes in 2 preseason games… That statement alone tells me how little you know about this game, period..#smh

I'm not going to win this argument I know this.

He’s a ball stopper because he was a ball stopper all year last season.

He’s a ball stopper because, well he’s a ball stopper.

Why does one call Artest crazy?

Or Humphries a good rebounder?

Or Nash a bad defender?

by vincecarter4pres on Dec 25, 2011 9:55 AM EST up reply actions

He absolutely is a ball stopper

and Brooks himself has said Avery gets all over him when he hogs the ball for like 10 or more seconds before jacking up a shot.

You could already see it in college. He is a ball stopper, plain and simple.

stupid trade for Memphis

Vazquez had potential, at least more than Poindexter. It would be interesting if King somehow stole Mayo for Farmar, J-Will, and whatever else (like people said, they almost did a McRoberts swap, you never know). Would give the Nets a lot of wing players, but I guess DeShawn would officially be a 3, and Mayo would compete with Morrow for starting 2. Kid helps a lot in the scoring department

by JerseysFinest. on Dec 24, 2011 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

If we got Mayo I think it's going to cost us Farmar and MarShon.

Morrow and Stevenson then come off the bench with Mayo and James as the starters.

by vincecarter4pres on Dec 24, 2011 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

To much for Mayo

"We're not there yet, but we're going somewhere," Johnson said. "And we're going to Brooklyn. We're not going to contract. We're going to Brooklyn."

by Atronic on Dec 24, 2011 8:18 PM EST up reply actions

Meh really?

I don’t even think Mayo is worth a ton, but he’s certainly worth more then Farmar.

And I think Nets fans are gassed up on their own guy in Swag.

Yeah sure he’s got potential, but he was the 25th overall pick in a pretty weak draft, he’s 23 already and has just as many cons as pros, he’s not worth what Nets fans would like to think.

Basically a very late first and a serviceable younger player at a position of need on a fair contract.

Sounds exactly like Mayo’s value.

but his price was a bit steep. They could have easily retained Stevenson if they wanted to, especially for what we signed him for, I wonder why they didn’t though.

by universal on Dec 24, 2011 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yes I would agree Andres, but you're leaving out important info.

A) No one is guaranteed to get last year’s Chandler. Not NYK, not Dallas or us if either of us had signed him.

For maybe 3 seasons before last he was considered an always injured touch above average albatross contract.

He is a very good player when healthy and motivated in the right fit/situation/lineup, but in all reality he’s just the flavor of the month right now.

B) He was the final piece, albeit the most important one and centerpiece to a brilliant defensive scheme, system and team effort.

It’s not like there were a bunch of schlubs around him and a bad defensive coach and system and he single handedly turned it around like he’s Dwight.

by vincecarter4pres on Dec 24, 2011 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, the injury disclaimer I put in the original post.

I meant to post something about that earlier today just to clear the air with you guys before the season started, I’ve just been crazy busy the last 3 days and have posted sparingly from my phone, the last week or so honestly.

by vincecarter4pres on Dec 24, 2011 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

Hmm...

IDK man, Lopez was to be such a huge part of our success and the main chip in a Dwight deal.

Who knows when he comes back and how limited he is for the first few weeks after returning and although I think Orlando will take a wait and see approach about trading for him, it will certainly mean they won’t deal until the deadline, where as I thought there was a chance a deal got down in the next few weeks before the injury.

Also I’m very unsure about Okur’s health.

It’s a stupid bet for me unless you want to spot me some absurd amount of games that makes it too risky for you.

did anyone see what buss said

Jim Buss not interested in dealing Gasol & Bynum for Dwight Howard, calls the idea “silly”
According to latimes.com:
There’s an Internet report suggesting Orlando was willing to trade Howard for Bynum and Pau Gasol, but now he’s shaking his head as if in pain.

“Where does this stuff come from?” he says. “You’d have to be kind of silly to give up two All-Stars like that for Howard. Zero truth to it. We have never been asked for Andrew and Pau and we’ve never offered them. I think they know we’d either say no or they would sound crazy for asking.”
