Introducing The Jazz of New Jersey
Across Utah Friday, writers are having a good time referring to the Nets as "Eastern Utah", the "Beehive State Nets", "Jazz East Coast" and "New Jersey Jazz".
And why not? Five Nets got their start or played for years in Utah.
Deron Williams was drafted at #3 by the Jazz in 2005, played five and a half years in Utah; Kris Humphries, drafted at #14 by the Jazz in 2004, played two years in Utah; Mehmet Okur, signed as a free agent by the Jazz in 2004, played seven years in Utah; DeShawn Stevenson, drafted at #23 by the Jazz in 2000, played two years in Utah; and Sundiata Gaines, signed to a 10-day contract by the Jazz in 2010, played 32 games in Utah.

Call us whatever youv want
Jazz saved our moisos and gave us a way back to getting Dwight. I’m now going to go to their board and show my appreciation for them.
RIP baby. I love you forever. Our dream of seeing D12 with the Nets is getting closer.
how?
they helped us to stay afloat, i’m not sure how Okur helps us to get Howard though?

better way to view it MDB might be...

I have no problems with King
I’m just trying to understand where the optimism is coming from in regards to Howard. We are not in the driver’s seat and our main trade chip may be done for the year.

Again, why assume how long he'll be out, when we don't know?
I get all of your other points, except that one. Remember what they say about people who assume.
RIP baby. I love you forever. Our dream of seeing D12 with the Nets is getting closer.
you assume that Howard is going to be a Net
but anyway, stress fractures aren’t a walk in the park, especially for slow, lumbering 7 footers like Brook.
I hope that he’s a fast healer, but man…

okur is such an upgrade over petro
i would be disgusted crossing over my defender, spin move pass the help defender, only to dish to Petro and he blows the dunk/layup/5 footer.
That type of crap makes you really think twice about busting your hump or staying or recruiting others
I hope Okur can still play and thus keep Dwill a little happier, that’s all MDB

im not sure it does anything now
in that sense u r very much correct
i guess we all hope Nets can play competitive ball, enough that deron and DH12 keep talking and on that day that magic and lakers r ready to pull the trigger,Dwight looks at nets. smiles and tells otis “step the Moiso off, only signing long term with the Nets”
we can all dream a little MDB

Okur is another trade chip
Come the deadline, there will be teams looking to add depth up front. Okur, who is a former all-star and veteran, is on an expiring contract. He could be moved to acquire another piece to put in a Dwight trade
Okur helps keep Deron happy...
Deron keeps Dwight happy.
If Dwight sees that Deron’s still happy with Brooklyn, Dwight lets Orlando know it’s Broolyn or bust…Ball in Orlando’s court…Point..set and match !

RIP baby. I love you forever. Our dream of seeing D12 with the Nets is getting closer.
The Magic will still be more cautious to trade for Lopez without seeing if he can improve his dismal rebounding numbers.
from the article M I K E posted. Not sure how Deron being happy with a stop gap ensures that Otis will trade Dwight for Lopez as opposed to Andrew Bynum
by MrDollarBills on Dec 23, 2011 11:11 AM EST up reply actions
Bynum is somewhat of a myth
His numbers are a product of the team he plays on. He’s not a franchise player. He has bad knees. He now has a bad rep. Cautious? Yes, but remember there was an article on here yesterday that said they would pursue Brook in FA.
RIP baby. I love you forever. Our dream of seeing D12 with the Nets is getting closer.
was that article based upon facts or just opinion?
because it sounds utterly dumb to me that the Magic would prefer to let Howard walk and then signing Lopez outright instead of trying to trade Howard for Brook and getting back more in return via picks and young players.
Bynum is a myth but he’s currently healthy and he has championship rings to back up his stature. People look at Brook and the first things that come to mind are “12-70” and “6rpg”. I hate that, but its the truth.

to be fair
Lopez has been the best offensive player on a bad team but has had to score facing double, sometimes triple teams because the team has been so bad that they can’t keep defenses honest.
I have yet to see Andrew Bynum even face 1/10th of the adversity that Brook has, but again perception is everything

By getting Okur, it keeps Deron happy
it shows Dwight that our FO listens to its star player, unlike ORL. Okur is an expiring contract, which is valuable, and he can be traded at any time. His salary matches up with Hedo’s. That’s how.
RIP baby. I love you forever. Our dream of seeing D12 with the Nets is getting closer.
as does Stevenson..
Shawne Williams, etc.
We are doing everything we can to show Deron this team is his. Which sends a message to dwight as well. I’m starting to truly believe dwight will do what it takes to come here in 2012. I don’t think that means he will pull a melo and say knicks or bust, as that is kind of a d!ck move, but him being vague about if he would resign with any team not named the Nets is the best he will do.
by Jack Handy Jr on Dec 23, 2011 11:14 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Exactly.
He’s getting everything he wants that is in the Nets power. They can’t control what the Magic do, but it has to feel good to know that when you request the team go after a player, Billy makes sure he is on the team by the end of the week.
@NetsROC
Don't know why this ended up here.
Was in respnse to Mr DB asking how Okur helps get DWight
yeah
no i realize that we have expiring deals, but imo the Lopez injury is the killer here.
Then watch the Nets push Brook onto the floor too early and he either further aggravates the problem or just looks flat out abysmal.

Great thing about Okur...
is that he has played with Deron for a number of years…
No learning curve involved. Deron knows what he can do and Okur knows what Deron does.
Can’t play Okur too many minutes. The schedule is brutal enough but other teams have to deal with it too…If Okur is healthy we should be O.K. for now.
What looked like a total disaster yesterday is now looking a whole lot better today.
Still worried… but at least on paper we should be able to thread water until Brook gets back…
Should be an interesting season full of thrills and spills…But that’s what makes it so entertaining.
I saw this from the last thread and wanyed to bring it to this one cortesy of orrechio
SI 2001 preview
By Marty Burns, CNNSI.com
Another year, another rebuilding project in the Swamp.
New Jersey turned over half its roster this past offseason, shipping out such notables as Stephon Marbury, Kendall Gill, Stephen Jackson, Evan Eschmeyer and Johnny Newman. This time, the Nets hope they got it right.
Of course, Jason Kidd is not a bad way to start a franchise makeover.
Kidd should improve the Nets’ team chemistry with his unselfish play, while also helping Keith Van Horn get untracked. It won’t make much difference, however, if Kerry Kittles doesn’t come back fully from his knee troubles. Neither Kidd nor shooting guard Lucius Harris are marksman, meaning the brick-laying Nets will need Kittles’s outside stroke more than ever.
2001 Starting Five
PG Jason Kidd
SG Kerry Kittles
SF Keith Van Horn
PF Kenyon Martin
C Todd MacCulloch
Our 2011 team
PG D Will
SG Morrow
SF S Williams
PF Hump
C Okur
Little bit of a sretch and I know the Eastern Conference is vastly improved from 2001, but I see some similarities to the 2001 team and I think we have something to build on. A fullseason of Deron is going to be great and just like Kidd 10 years ago, he will make something out of this team of ours
I see zero similarities
we have a superstar PG, that is the only thing that this team has in common with the 2001 Nets.

Come playoff time though Orlando will be dwightless. Atlanta is a pretender and Boston has some serious holes. If we make the playoffs with healthy lopez only Miami and Chicago scare me. Ny is such a wildcard, but I can’t see amare, Chandler, Davis all holding up over a condensed schedule.

Also
the end pf that article pegged us 10th. The nets won 50 and went to the finals.
Not saying the two teams are exactly alike…but with an unorthodox lineup of bombers spreading the floor for Dwill…no reason why we couldn’t compete for the 8th seed in the east.
Miluwalkee Indiana and Philly are good but not juggernauts. And we have the best singular talent of any of those teams in Dwill.

Don't know if this was posted yet...Analysis of Okur trade for what it's worth...
By Cory Bernstein
Well that was fast.
At four-ish today, I wrote a doomsday article about Brook Lopez getting an injury and how bad that was for the Nets, and many of the things I said were true. The Nets are severely impacted by the Lopez injury and there are few centers in the league that could replace him offensively. The Magic will still be more cautious to trade for Lopez without seeing if he can improve his dismal rebounding numbers.
But, the Nets traded for Mehmet Okur about eight hours after news broke of Lopez’s injury. By no means is Memo as good as Brook, but you could do a lot worse (like Johan Petro). Okur actually has a similar game to Lopez on the offensive side of the ball. Both are comically slow and favor mid-range jumpers to a traditional post up game. Okur is a solid rebounder, and is much better at rebounding and probably a better defender than Lopez………Grade: B+
Full article…

people are naive
If they think lopez prefers perimeter jumpers. Avery made him do that. He’s so much better on the block and relishes drawing contact.

the more you read people write about Lopez
the more it becomes clear that we have a lot of so called journalists that make claims and write articles about players that they DO NOT WATCH PLAY on a regular basis
The idea that Lopez is some Andrea Bargnani-esque jumpshooter is beyond idiotic. The only other center to get to the FT line as much as Brook last year was DH12.
Moronic drivel.

dwight..
Only six big men went to the line more, one center, the rest power forwards.

As upsetting this Brook injury is..
it is also a blessing in disguise. If brook was not injured trade rumors would haunt us everyday until the trade deadline, now we can focus on the team we have at the moment without the Dwight distractions. Hopfully Lopez comes back with enough time to showcase him before the trade deadline.

on Dec 21st you could have said the same thing about Brook
In the 1st Quarter he was healthy and playing well. No one can predict what’s going to happen next – to any player. (Except we know Bynum will be healthy for the first 5 games.) Wish we hadn’t had to play starters during the pre-season – but with such a short camp/pre-season it was necessary.
I am hoping for two things
1. LAL are not a desirable place for Howard, and he turns down an extension.
2. Otis is stubborn and holds onto Howard past trade deadline
I think I'd like option 2
But it would be bc ownership is too stubborn. They are obviously running things.

option 2 would be the best
I’d imagine though that Dan Fegan will eviscerate the Magic and will threaten to steer clients away from them if they screw Howard out of his $$$

if the Magic do not trade Dwight
he will not be able to get a 5th year from us.

WOW PAUSE
We’re all freaking out about the Nets and Dwight… Two people from my town just died in the last 24 hours… really puts this basketball thing in perspective.

Does this make any sense ?
Fans analysis on Okur trade (CBSSPORTS.COM)…
This move for the Nets does not change anything for the Howard trade.
In fact, I think it could help. If the Magic were to take Okur as part (a small part) of any trade with the Nets, his contract would be off the books after this season. That would leave space to go after any FAs that would be left. Of course, the most desired FA is Howard.
If the Magic were to take, say Lopez, Okur, Jordan Farmar, Jordan Williams and 2 1st round picks (only for the sake of this statement, ok) for Hedo and Howard, then Okur’s salary is more than all the others and helps the Magic stay closer to 90% of the cap. Or whatever is needed to meet min. salary level without long term damage.
Wilson Chandler in March?
I’d take him just as soon as AK47 at the sf.
This is if Djames isnt producing of course.
If he can give us 12pts 7rbs and score inside like he was doing in preseason he will be fine.
Chandler would be nice
But he’s an RFA and I see Den matching. Also I don’t think we would have capspace

I kind of like this fans analysis of Okur trade..At least the first part. (LOL)
Okur can play bro!! He was pretty good while in Utah and healthy. The Nets on the other hand will ALWAYS be HORRIBLE!!!
For Gods sake their the Nets!!!!
From Orlando blog on SB*NATION discussing what deal to take for Howard...
Nets fans will be quick to point out, however, that this broken foot has more potential than any other broken foot in the league.

this is why Lopez going down was beyond awful for us.

it just further piles onto the bad stigma that Brook has about him outside this fanbase.

i think that dude thinks the same way lol
Crappy trade gets crappier
So we can choose between an overrated center with bad knees or an overrated center with a bad foot. Hurray.

this team has a long way to go
to be as good as the Pacers, Sixers, or Hawks. We’re barely equal to the Pistons, Bucks, or Wizards. Anywhere from 9 to 12 in the East is the most likely outcome.

I been arguing with a Mavs/Knix fan all morning
He sayin the Okur move doesnt mean anything. I say it means everything.
A move had to be made and it was done
DWill obviously made the request
Billy King came through same day
Dwight doesnt get those kind of results even though he makes the requests
Nets still have a shot @ the playoffs
Brook wont have to rush back
the front court will be deep come playoff time
Orlando could have called for Okur or some other expiring deal to have cap space next summer but signed 2 players to long contracts

Ledger_Nets Colin Stephenson
Nets say doctors inserted a screw to the foot. They say he’ll be back in 6-8 weeks. Good luck with that.
Colin is a complete tool.
there is no literary, journalistic, or marketing integrity with him anywhere.
I’ll bet he got the moiso beat out of him in school, and now he’s a media bully.

long time reader
I’m a long time reader..rare poster..What is the expected starting lineup now for opening night? D-Will,Hump,and Memo are a given..SG and SF?
by jerzymook on Dec 23, 2011 12:34 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Also include Shawne if he's healthy...
SF is still a problem area for us…
Anybody hear anything on Shawne’s health status ?
At practice
"We're not there yet, but we're going somewhere," Johnson said. "And we're going to Brooklyn. We're not going to contract. We're going to Brooklyn."
I wonder
who will be the odd man out
Damion James, Shawne Williams, Marshon Brooks, Anthony Morrow, Deshawn Stevenson
who gets shafted for PT
With the brutal schedule this year...
due to the condensed season…everybody will be needed. Add in injuries and even Jordan Williams might get some playing time…D James and Morrow are injury prone and who knows if Shelden Williams and Okfur can hold up.
This year many players will feel the strain of playing so many games in a short period of time.
Lot of back to backs and even one back to back to back…
It will be intersting to see how older players and players with history of injury (I.E. Amare) hold up this season and how many minutes they actually play each game.
“All hands on deck…”
That's what I was thinking!
We should package two for one much better player

James starts
Williams play most of the back up minutes, Morrow will get a lot of time at the two. Stevenson will swtich from the two to three esp when we’re playing teams with star wings. Brooks will probably have to earn his spot and start out as odd man out. Took a long time for AJ to play DJ and that was wtth Outlaw stinking it up. Although you can argue he wanted to defend his signing.

New Jazzy Nets
If we get one more Jazz player, Kirilinko, then it is official the New Jazzy Nets. If James can play smart and aggressive, not a bad team. But I’d sure love to see another defensive stud like Kirilinko, especially with Hump and Okur up front.
If Brooks develops he should see a lot of minutes by mid-season..but you’re right we need defensive help..Brooks can’t defend right now..so he needs help so he can stay on the court long enough to polish his offensive game

I think it's great how the 2 franchises have ultimately merged fan bases
Most of the Nets fans I know personally now root for the Jazz, seeing how most of the Nets’ promising assets went there and they still root for them to succeed.
And I know a few Jazz fans that still root for D-Will to do something truly special wit his career, and would love to see the little brother Nets eclipse the Goliath Knicks after the Nets land Dwight Howard.
I live I Orlando an I’m From newark Dwight to brick city is what make sence for the magics they already was gonna do the trade but Orlando needs Dwight for the All Star game.
