Memo Okur same asTroy Murphy, if not worse?
This year's situation was the same as last year.
Last season Nets acquired Troy Murphy in exchange for Courtney Lee. Troy Murphy coming off a back-to-back double-double seasons, that had range, with a good percentage, up to the three point range.
The Nets were hoping that he would fill a void at the 4 spot while the then Nets rookie Derrick Favors get some experience. But turns out Kris Humphries played that role and he was stuck in the bench for most of the season. Although having an injury even before the season started didn't help either.
Now with Brook Lopez's injury to his 5th metatarsal, or the small toe. We now had a void at the center position, and hours after the news to Brook's injury came out, Billy King acquired Memo Okur. A big man that can shoot the three and rebound.
Now why did i say that he's the same or even worse than Murphy?
Look at Okur's stats: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3547/career;_ylt=Ah_m70bSxTw6v0UJAdxxe2OkPKB4
Now look at Murphy's: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3524/career;_ylt=Ah_m70bSxTw6v0UJAdxxe2OWPKB4
If you look at their stats, Murphy had 5 double-double seasons before his tenure with NJ, Memo had none (he came awfully close in 2004-2005, the season where Deron was a Rookie). Both shot well from the trey, with Memo averaging 37% for his career, while Murphy averaged 39%.
Both of them are not above average defenders as shown in their stats with Okur having a 0.3 advantage in blocks (to be fair both are averaging BELOW 1 block per game in their career).
With Brook out, Memo gets Brook's starting spot outright. Just like Murphy, who was suppose to be the starter last season.
Now if you still don't get why i said that Okur might be worse, Okur doesn't play rebound well even if he's a 7 feet tall, he's back from an injury meaning he'd be more rusty, plus he's at least 2 years older than Murphy.
My fear is that with both of them having the same skill set, would he have the same fate as Murphy last season?

That's why you don't just look at stats.

Rec +10,000.
You can’t tell how good a guy is at defense through his stats, you have to watch the games.

You want to compare Murphy and Okur?
Let’s stop this comparison, first of all the relative situations when each were acquired are completely different, and Okur is a much better player. I’ll even back my opinion with my own set of numbers. Let’s look at the last time both players played a full season 2009-2010, and the reasons most people say that Murphy is as good, or superior, than Okur.
Rebounding: Murphy’s rebounding numbers are greatly inflated by his defensive rebounding numbers. Most of them being relatively useless. If you look at this Offensive rebounding percentage for 09-10 it comes in at a rather paltry looking 6.0%. What was Okur’s Offensive rebounding percentage in 09-10? 7.5%
Defense: The concept that Murphy and Okur are somewhat equivalent defensively is completely off base. Murphy is one of the worst defenders in the league. If you look at opponent’s PER from 09-10 at their respective positions, which I admit is not a perfect measure, but the discrepancy is large enough to demonstrate my point, Murphy was giving up a PER of 21.5 to opposing Power Forwards. Okur on the other hand gave up a PER of 14.4 to opposing centers, which by definition, makes him a slightly above average defender. The difference gets even more drastic when the two were defending out of position, (Murphy vs C’s and Okur vs PF’s), Murphy 24.2, Okur 18.3. That’s right, Okur even defends POWER FORWARDS better than Murphy.
Shooting: I admit, Murphy may be a slightly better shooter than Okur, but the disparity is really not that great, and Okur typically acheives this with a higher usage rate, making it more impressive.
I think Okur is a great rental until Brook comes back, and he will certainly be motivated to play himself into another decent contract from someone next offseason. Okur is NOT Troy Murphy.
Doesn't like you :-) lol
I think he meant to reply to me, I have 0 thoughts about a Murphy and Okur comparison.

nothing wrong with Troy Murphy
Murphy had 10 straight good seasons before coming to the Nets, and 1 1/2 good seasons after. Maybe it’s not the player.

Murphy had 1 1/2 good seasons...
… after being traded by the Nets? In what league- NBA 2k11?
Warriors waived him post trade, did nothing for Celtics last season, remains to be seen what (if anything) he’ll do for the Lakers this year.
I don’t think Murphy got a chance but that’s a story for another day. Avery will have to play Okur with Lopez out a extended period.
yeah
Avery is a much better coach when he doesn’t have any choice about who to play.

Blocks per game
If you’ve ever played competitive basketball you would know that blocked shots mean absolutely nothing. Now the professional game is a little different from middle school, high school and junior college… but the concept is still the same. More often then not you are called for a foul when attempting a blocked shot. While blocked shots look awesome in highlight reals, can potentially change ball possession, and ultimately avoid the other team scoring, blocked shots are usually frowned upon. Good defense cant be judged by stats. I don’t think there’s a stat line that shows how efficient you are at not allowing your opponent to score by an individual player.
Okur is a completely different situation then Troy was. Troy came in not able to play because of injury. Kris Humphries turned out to be a good starter and made Murphy expendable. Okur will get playing time, be productive and make a difference till Brook gets back. For a second round pick, an expiring contract as a trade asset, and the ability to sit Petro, this is a great addition.
Tell Dikembe Mutombo and Akeem Olajuwon
that blocked shots are frowned upon. They have like 7 defensive player of the year awards between them. Oh yeah, Bill Russell blocked shots too. I bet Red Aurbach was frowning every year telling him to stop.
murphy helped us get deron indirectly
here is hoping that memo gets us dwight

smh… Morrison had never played in the nba. Okur had been a productive player for years before he was injured.

Speaking of Morrison, surprised his name didn't come up at least as a camp invite.
I know there was interest in the recent past. He’s playing well in Europe, playing tough and looks strong.
nice try on the comparison sadly its a fail
you forget the situations both player’s were in and surrounding talent…troy murphy’s complimentary players including jermaine oneal, jeff foster, roy hibbert (i belive in his first year)..whileokur had boozer and milsap…now murphy’s bloated stats came around when oneal sucked mosio…but okur’s stats came at a time when boozer was still playing at that all star level..so dont give me that okur and murphy comparison
Just because Troy Murphy's career fell apart when he came here...
…doesn’t mean every tall, white power forward with three-point range is suddenly going to suck.
Could he be as bad or worse than Murphy? Sure, that’s the absolute worst case scenario, but he is 32 coming off an injury. I’d rather be more positive and think he’ll return to near pre-injury levels and be able to help us stay afloat without Brook.
