Nets Waive Stephen Graham

The Nets announced Thursday morning that they have waived Stephen Graham, reducing their roster to 14 players. (DeShawn Stevenson would make it 15 again.) The Nets needed to waive Graham Thursday, so that he could clear waivers before his $1.1 million contract became guaranteed.

Graham was the first player off the bench in Wednesday's loss to the Knicks. He started 28 games for the Nets last season.

It’s that avery loves him too much and will give him playing time that he should not…

i don't think it's that at all

when you look at the nets wings, last year and this year, avery had no choice. it was like try to decide between a Pinto and a Pinto. You’re moiso either way. Last year, Outlaw, James, Ross, Graham…what choice does the coach have but to play what he’s dealt with.

Two preseason games, wings are James, Graham and Udoka. Not much to choose from. I’m sure if this team had better wings, Graham would’ve been at the end of the bench and only come in for garbage minutes

No need to keep Udoka around, should be gone by first game - I hope.

Shelden good for 15 minutes a game backing the PF and C. Lets hope yesterday is a sign of a different Petro for this season. If he can give us 8 points and 8 boards off the benchm that would be big for us. We may be stuck with him until this Dwight thing happens at the deadline.

by bettacalltyrone on Dec 22, 2011 10:09 AM EST up reply actions   2 recs

I would go so far as to say that Petro is the WORST back up Center in the NBA. He is not a strong defender or rebounder. His basketball IQ is exceedingly low. He forces 18 foot jumpers and seems to have a disdain for playing in the post. And he runs his own blog extolling how well he played when he puts up 6 points and 2 boards.

Josh Boone is a far superior player – and would have been a cheaper contract. So yeah, this was and is a HUGE failing in our front office for signing this guy to a 3 year deal.

To suggest Josh Boone

by Kmart6nets on Dec 22, 2011 10:15 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

i'd take boone gettin 5 points and 15 rebounds shooting 45% from the FT line

over petro getting 6 points and 4 boards shooting 20 foot jumpers every time he touches the ball without a thought of passing and never getting to the free throw line

But I think we are even better than that. Addition by subtraction no Outlaw and No Graham. Essentially replaced with ShawnE and Pimp Juice is an upgrade. Healthy D Will improving Brook and Hump for a full season.

We will be competent and when the threes are falling we will be fun to watch. I like D James and Marshon will figure it out too.

I may be alone but we don’t need AK. He is old will hamper flexibility and lately always seems hurt. DJames and ShawnE can man the Three. Our Defense will be better.

We will be better. It’s about how the team gels and meshes together.

I don’t think anyone is wishing for Farmar to be dealt – but I think the reality is that we have 3 PGs on a team where DWill is going to play 35+ minutes a night – so it becomes overkill. And Farmar is a valuable trade chip – and can easily return a draft pick…..Remember if you are going to trade for Dwight Howard you need as many picks as possible as that is what Orlando is going to want. Dealing him also frees up cap space.

He will be a casualty of putting ourselves in position to make a trade for Dwight.

Yes – and Farmar is a pretty solid NBA PG. But he is also our most tradeable asset at the moment – a playoff tested backup PG in his 20s is always in demand in the NBA – particularly for a team with championship aspirations in a shortened season where teams will play plenty of back to backs.

For the Nets – his real value is in accumulating assets for their next move.

by Ryan243 on Dec 22, 2011 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

Trade him for what

Hes still just a back up. No team will be willing to give up a fist rounder for him. Hes a good player who is a good passer and could hit the three. Dwill looks good coming off screens and knocking down jumpshots. He adds a different package of plays for Dwill to play the 2

If not Howard...

This team desperately needs a guy that can create his own shot. There’s going to be a lot of sloppy basketball this season, as clearly illustrated in the preseason. Games will be relatively low scoring, and mostly won by hustle & offensive rebounding. However teams that have guys that can create their own shots (Heat: James & Wade, Mavs: Dirk & Terry, Knicks: Melo, etc.) will be at a big advantage.

Teams will force the ball out of DWill’s hands, and this team has nobody else that can create a shot for themselves.

I'm not sure

The whole trade is puzzling…it’s hard to gauge what Orlando really wants for Dwight Howard. It will be interesting how the trade deadline plays out. The whole thing really depends on how serious Dwight Howard pushes the trade at the deadline…but the result is our team is basically in a holding pattern for the year. That is why we are signing all of these 1 year deals.

this morning Otis is trying to convince the Devos to hold on to Dwight and let him walk. If he lands in Jersey they would then go after Brook Lopez does this make sense??

•Smith realizes that Lopez can become a restricted free agent next summer. The Magic could be in play for him if Howard lands in New Jersey as a free agent. Lopez makes $3 million this season and has a $4.2 million qualifying offer next season.

The Nets can match any deal for Lopez, but why would they? The questions would be whether Orlando can clear room and what a 7-foot scoring center on the market might command. Might need to start at $10 million.

My lil man.....can't tell me god don't exist.

by killa kadafi191 on Dec 22, 2011 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

they could

just trade for Brook now and get more out of it instead of waiting for him to hit the market

and i’d wager that King would attempt to keep Lopez and Howard together if the opportunity presented itself.

by MrDollarBills on Dec 22, 2011 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

If the Magic or any other team had cap space

They can immediately sign Lopez to a large offer sheet (his max starts at $14.5mil). Once Lopez has an offer from another team we’ll be forced to sign him or renounce him, because the offer becomes our cap hold. That would ultimately force our hand if Howard was waffling between signing in NJ & Dallas in the offseason.

by TheNetsFan on Dec 22, 2011 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

If it's between Lopez and Howard in FA

We gotta wait on Howard. Although if we were assured that Howard would come to NJ then we could get rid of Hump, Stevenson (10.5 million dollars freed up + Farmar = 14). Then sign Howard and Deron. Maybe even reduce their deals?

by Ccrules2791 on Dec 22, 2011 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

we wouldnt have to renounce him

if we got rid of Farmar and Frenchie’s contract which is another 7M.

Add that to the expiring of almost 8M from humphries / and deshawn’s 2.5 plus we already still have currently 9M – 11M depends on what source.

can somebody get me accurate cap numbers?

by danxcr on Dec 22, 2011 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

call Bobby marks

I’m sure that the dude has this scenario written down somewhere on a post it

by MrDollarBills on Dec 22, 2011 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

If somebody presented Lopez a max (14.5mil) offer

We could get rid of Farmar & Petro, and still not have enough space for Howard. That would put us at $15.1mil in cap space after renouncing Humphries, not including cap holds for our first rounder(s).

by TheNetsFan on Dec 22, 2011 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

I don't believe so

I don’t see Lopez working well next to Howard on either end. David West would be ideal next to Howard, unfortunately he’s gone.

by ZR on Dec 22, 2011 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

Why wouldn't the Nets keep Brook and Howard?

I think it would be possible. It would take some good coaching but it was done in San Antonio in the early 00s (David Robinson and Tim Duncan). Remember? Avery was on that team.

by Ccrules2791 on Dec 22, 2011 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

I would love to have both but

I’m not sure how well the 2 would work together (lopez and howard) I would have to see them playing together before a final verdict could be made…

by jbbaum on Dec 22, 2011 10:42 AM EST up reply actions

So...

The Magic won’t trade D12 for a package that includes Brook, but if Dwight leaves, which looks pretty inevitable at this point, he would sign Lopez as a FA.

Ok.

I typed your symptoms into this thing up here and it says you could have network connectivity problems.

by TKFJ on Dec 22, 2011 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

No way this goes to FA

It’s obvious Orlando has interest in Brook and it’s more cap-friendly for them if they trade for him, cause it would be cheaper. Just a matter of when.

Stop saying it's obvious...it's not

Where are you’re sources? Why are you credible? This is purely speculation, so it being “obvious” makes no sense…

If they were that high on Lopez, the Magic would’ve done the deal before the season.

by ZR on Dec 22, 2011 11:27 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

depends

if we can move Farmar and Petro for (2nd rounders) and clear up an extra 7M, and all our free agent additions are 1 year deals, then we wouldnt have to renounce Lopez’s rights.

Knicks to sign Kenyon Martin?

Even if Chinese Basketball Association rules do not allow Kenyon Martin to play in the NBA until March, the Nets CANNOT allow the Knicks to sign him.

As long as it doesn’t get in the way of any potential Dwight deal, Kenyon coming off the bench, or even starting, would re-invigorate the Nets and give Deron an athletic alley-oop target.

Nets Daily, delete this post if this is against the rules. Thanks.
10. New Jersey Nets (28-38)

The Nets are the hardest team to project because of all the potential wild cards. While Kris Humphries finally signed, they still have a ton of cap room and might sign Andrei Kirilenko too; longer-term, of course, the possibility of a trade for Dwight Howard teases.

For now, the Nets are a mishmash. Star guard Deron Williams has been playing in real games since October and should be in tip-top shape, and Brook Lopez looms as a secondary offensive weapon in the middle. That’s a solid offensive foundation, and certainly one that should improve on last season’s 27th-place standing in offensive efficiency. If they indeed add Kirilenko to Anthony Morrow’s shooting, Humphries’ energy and a bench with some offensive options (Shawne Williams, Jordan Farmar, first-round pick Marshon Brooks), this should be a decent offensive team.

Defensively, they’re still short-handed. Lopez blocks shots but is ponderously slow and a comically poor rebounder for his size. The other bigs don’t offer much on defense either, and Morrow is a sieve on the wing. Williams’ effort on D has also slackened the past two seasons. Of course, if they land Howard, all of that changes.

If they don’t, the scenario is much worse. Williams is probably leaving after the season, and the Nets will effectively have given the Jazz Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter, and a 2012 lottery pick for a year-and-a-half of Deron Williams. So basically, they’re heading into Brooklyn next year either riding atop a huge wave or smashed on the rocks beneath it.

In the meantime, they should be respectable in their final season in New Jersey. I priced in a re-signed Humphries and an added Kirilenko to this projection, but no Howard. That still leaves them short of the playoffs, but the folks in Jersey should be left with some decent memories.

by Mikepop1027 on Dec 22, 2011 11:17 AM EST reply actions

Why are people not happy

We are putting a very solid team on the floor with very good depth (which will be the most important thing in this condensed season).

This also leaves us with very good options and trade chips to get a deal done for Howard down the line. I’m delighted at what Billy King is doing, in fact there isn’t anything more he can do.

I can’t wait to shock a few teams this year. Were definately a playoff team and with the depth we could cause a lot of damage. Teams like the Knicks and Boston haven’t much depth and as soon as there is an injury they will struggle.

D Will / Farmar / Gaines
Morrow / Stevenson / Brooks
James / S Williams / Stevenson
Hump / Sheld Williams / J Williams
Lopez / Petro / Sheld Williams

That is good depth with James and Williams able to play stretch 4 also. We’ve got good options to change things up for the 1st time in years.

Depth will be key this season. Love what Billy King is doing.

Can’t wait for Boxing night now

too much of a liability on the defense to start. there is a reason why last year we were always behind after the first quarter. People think it was because of offense, but it was actually because of our defense.

It makes me a bit nervous when we have Farmar out there running with DWill, let alone Gaines.

MarShon more playing time then Morrow?

by nwkiddnj on Dec 22, 2011 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

We shall see

I like morrow but the reality is he is one dimensional – 3pt shooter. he isnt even a good scorer. MarShon is better all around. Did you see him try to block Chandler’s shot last night? Once he gets rid of the nerves and let’s the game come to him, He will get more PT then Morrow.

Do you remember that morrow drive from last year when he had an open lane and the ball hit the side of the back board?

Love Morrow but MarShon will definitely get more PT. There were a few plays that MarShon attacked the rim and didnt get calls from the ref. Morrow cant do that. He is a jump shooter not a slasher.

the Kidd Finals teams was bad offensively. What kept them in games was their defense.

Dwill -18pt 10 ast
Stevenson – 10pt
DJames – 13 pt
Hump – 10 pts 8rbs
Lopez – 20 pts 8 rbs

Bench
Morrow – 10 pts
Brooks – 10 pts
rest – you can fill in the blanks.

is better offensively then the Kidd Finals team. The Kidd Teams had NO half court game. With Lopez, dwill and the 3pt threats(Morrow, Stevenson, and ShaWill) we have a very good Half Court game. . Now can they defend like the Kidd teams.

by SIC One on Dec 22, 2011 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

Very good depth?

I woudln’t ok that far, some depth which is a big step up from when we had no depth last year. We’re still light at the starting spots at the 2 and the 3, maybe the 4 as well. We’re also very light on bench bigswe don’t really have a decent one.

On the plus side we have guys that are all good players at the two or at least hopefully with Brooks, none of them are starters on this team they could only be starters on teams surronded with talent. Again we have guys that make good/ decent bench pieces at the 3 in James and WIlliams but only starters on teams that are full of talent on every other position and want defnese or to spread the floor. At the 4 Hump is a solid starter and would start on a lot of teams but every good team as a least one good big off the bench, Petro and the Williams’ would both be third string center or pf or a decent team so we realy have nothing in the way of decent resrve big.

A big step up from last year when we had some of the worst player in the nba in Graham and Outlaw getting minutes when Morrow and James went down and we have one of the best one two punches in the league so there is some competitve ball to look forward to. Internal improvment is also a possibilty Shawne Williams, Brooks or James are all guys that could still possibly be decent starters in this league (Brooks hasn’t played yet and I’m higher on James for obvious reason then Shawne who has played a little longer and been around a few years.) I don’t know that any of them are ready for it yet though, James looks like he’ll be more solid then people think.

I agree with N.Ireland...

The condensed season is going to cause havoc for teams without good depth.

This season may be more about numbers then quality when it comes to teams.

Nets might lack the quality right now, but they have the numbers…

35-31

2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said
2011-2012 = make the playoffs without hindering future flexibility
2012 off-season = sign the second All-Star
2012-2013 = make a run for the championship

Mission accomplished thus far.

ok

Stevenson is a good signing. I’ll take him over the bum Graham.

Now from what I have seen these are the others who need be left off the squad as well. Sheldon Williams is a joke. Even as bench player. Looking at Deron William’s reactions to Sheldons mishaps so far during preseason says it all.

Get rid of Petro!!!!! GET RID OF PETRO DAMMMIT. How are you 7’0" and you can’t even have the slightest presence in the paint. This guy is horrid. I don’t even think he is D league material! Guy is horrible.

Now here’s my evaluation on some other players:
Damion James, can show flashes of a “good player” but most of the time this dude is erratic! Where is the defense everyone was talking about? I haven’t seen it this preseason. Carmella manhandled this guy. The truth is Damion James is at best a player coming off the bench. He is not a true starter in this league and will not be.

My boy Marshon Brooks; what the heck is going on….. love his shot! he is fluid! but man!! he looks extremely confused, a little lost at times and of course quite nervous! he has to look for the ball more. I can’t be hard on him yet because well….. he is just a rookie. But so far from what I have seen this kid has to man up a bit, be a lot more fearless on the court when he has the basketball in his hands.

by JerseyAdam on Dec 22, 2011 11:26 AM EST reply actions

Brooks is nervous because the athletes in the NBA are so good. He is a really smart player but a lot of the athletes in the NBA can use their superior athletic skills to make up for some of their mental mistakes.

by mytoemytoe on Dec 22, 2011 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

by mytoemytoe on Dec 22, 2011 11:28 AM EST up reply actions

My thoughts on last nights game...

Five players who are strictly backups or backups to backups, played 94 minutes combined.

Shelden Williams 28
Gaines 24
Petro 23
Udoka 10
Graham 9

Lopez and Hump played a combined 28 minutes.

Enough said…

I've seen some crazy approaches to the MPG situation this pre-season

Who knows what these coaches are thinking? Of course many will hate whatever approach Avery takes. Lopez gets injured playing big mins & he’d get blamed for that too.

Moving on to Shelden, he’s a JOKE! How can a guy who appears to be so solid fall around as much as he did? He was on the ground over & over again!

I think the Hump is going to have an awesome season.

He is going to tune out all the other stuff and just play basketball. Enjoy the boos and the attention while they last and be an absolute dog on defense and on the boards.

Part of Lopez admitting he was lazy last season is looking for ways to be in the spots near the rim where Humphries ISN’T. The best part of Lopez’s offensive game, besides the amazing And-1’s he pulls off, are the rebound put-backs we were seeing last night.

There’s room in the paint for two rebounders!!! Lopez and Hump, once they get their chemistry together, are going to be a lot better than people are expecting, at least on offense.

by mytoemytoe on Dec 22, 2011 11:42 AM EST reply actions

He’s just too terrible on offense, Albo and he’s not even worth 1 million when you’re trying to save all the cap space you can.

He can’t handle the ball and so he is a black-hole. Good man defense but he just doesn’t offer you enough.
