Nets Willing To Take Arenas, But Heat and Knicks May Want Him

Photo

It's not a surprise that Gilbert Arenas would want to play with Dwight Howard. Howard himself has said he disagreed with the Magic's decision to waive Arenas under the amnesty provision of the new CBA. According to Marc Stein, the Nets have "quietly indicated that they plan to take Arenas on if they're able to complete the trade for Howard that the Magic keep resisting".

But if the Magic continue to resist, as expected, Arenas is likely to move on. He'd like to get signed by a contender, the Lakers, Heat or Knicks. Even after the Knicks' decision Sunday to sign another amnestied All-Star, Baron Davis, Stein thinks the prospect of signing both at a bargain price may be too hard to pass up.

Given the market, he'll get more

If Shawne Williams can get what he got, Arenas will get that minimum or more.

why would the knicks take on another guard?

also, i doubt he would pick the nets over the heat

Coming off the bench or starting?

He might play injured to get out of this team if they bid.

Gilbert at the minimum would not be handcuffing anything

When you have guys like Petro and Graham on your roster getting minutes, surely u can afford Gil, who at least knows how to play the game.

Farmar's days are numbered...

I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s dealt before the season starts. He has the talent to contend for a starting PG job, and he won’t get that with the Nets. As far as two PG sets…it would just take time away from Morrow (who’s deserving of time) and Brooks (who also deserves time to develop).

If Morrow or Brooks is dealt in a Howard deal…that leave a hole at the guard spot.

by BKNfastbreak on Dec 18, 2011 4:52 PM EST reply actions

I agree, Farmar is a luxury the Nets can't afford right now.

See what you can get for him at the PF position.

I doubt Orlando trades D12 here

Even with the salary relief that Orlando would recieve, in addition to Howard requesting a trade here, he remains on the Magic. Hopefully Mr. King has not showed all his cards, and still has an ace up his sleeve. I believe if Howard truly wants to play with Deron, he should prove it by signing in the offseason. He’s still under contract so he should honor that contract. The Magic front office either believes he’ll resign or just refuse to trade him for whatever their reasons are. With that said, the Nets as constructed are not a good team. This team has a lot of holes, but with a top 8 player in Dwill, a motivated lopez and at least 1 more piece we can make the playoffs. I believe that the Nets should try to get Josh Smith. Would Farmar+ Petro, 2 12’ picks, Nets 14’ and Nets 16’ get it done? Maybe Mr. King can do a 3 team trade and get it done somehow. Would D12 be willing to sign in the offseason to play with Dwill and Smith in Brooklyn? I cheered for the 12 win team and I’ll cheer for this team. But please get Dwill some help cuz Graham and Petro couldnt beat me and Outlaw in a two on two.

Very little

The difference here is that the target has requested a trade to the Nets and that the Nets already have a superstar in place. I would’ve felt better seriously acquiring LeBron if DWill has here before that summer.

When you hear that from someone like Howard, a once in a generation player, you have to take the shot. I for one thought the Nets would just end up with Nene and might have been the safer move. But obviously Howard wants out and BK has to go for it.

As a NJ nets fan

I find it offensive that we are a week from the season starting without a legitimate PF or SF. If King has an assurance from Smith that Howard wil be traded to us by 12/31.. that is one thing (Guess we will find out soon)

If King plans to go through the season with this dreck hoping he can trade for Howard, I find this unacceptable.

I don’t care about Brooklyn. I want my team to respect its fans

by orangeeater on Dec 18, 2011 5:40 PM EST reply actions

i kind of agree with you but its such a difficult situation

I understand its Dwight or bust and keeping the cap space available is the best way for us to enable a trade for Dwight, but at the same time this current roster is really bad is going to stay that way if the forward positions arent upgraded within the next few days. I do agree with the whole Brooklyn thing though. It is really disrespectful to the NJ fans if they just accept a terrible season in hopes that Dwight comes eventually. Such a difficult spot though because we can’t say we want the roster upgraded now while also saying Dwight or bust. Plus, the organization really doesnt care about NJ and everything is about Brooklyn and that will not change. I’m just hoping for a somewhat quick resolution to all of this but that seems highly unlikely. Chances are we make no additions and play really bad basketball until March when Dwight gets traded either to us or LA. If its LA then we are screwed and it was all for nothing but if its to us, then all of this complaining will seem foolish and we will be signing King’s praises.

I'm looking for Ray Finkle.....and a clean pair of shorts.

As a NJ Nets fan

as well as a NY Nets and soon to be Brooklyn Nets fan, I agree.

Do something, make an offer to Afflalo, sign AK-47, re-sign Hump whatever….not these has beens and never was. Build a solid team that can compete for the few NJ Nets fans they have left this year….we are coming across as the loser guy no hot chick wants to date but willing to pay whatever it takes to get the girl, including making ourselves look like a laughingstock.

If Dwight wants to really play here with Deron in Brooklyn, then he can prove it by playing out his contract and telling the Lakers he will not sign an extension. Then maybe the Magic will get desperate and we won’t have to gut the team out as much to get him. If no trade is made and Howard plays out his contract with the Magic, we’ll have three first rounders in a projected good draft, maybe Marshon will be a good off the bench instant offense guy and we won’t get stuck with toxic contracts like Hedo’s (along with the FA we sign this year). And we won’t have a gutted team

I get where you're coming from, but

BK knows his moiso is on the line. He also knows he has an incredible opportunity to go into Brooklyn with a bang, and he has to do ALL he can to get this done sooner rather than later. He basically has no choice. I seriously doubt he won’t sign anyone if he can’t get anywhere with Orlando. You need to trust him. At least he hasn’t overspent on FA after Orlando’s FO nixed the trade the first time. He was persistent and him and Fegan are keeping the pressure on, and honestly, i’m thrilled he is, because with this franchise in the past, guys like Dwight wouldn’t have even wanted to come here and in the off chance they did, if a deal couldn’t be made the first time, they’d give up. You just have to trust him and know he’ll what’s best for the franchise.

RIP baby. I love you forever. Our dream of seeing D12 with the Nets is getting closer.

Things I noticed

Arenas who wants to play with Dwight hasnt signed
Hump hasnt talked to any teams
King hasnt signed anyone

Could we be signing and trading Hump with Lopez for pieces on the Magic? And then sign Arenas?

DWill is very happy with the Nets

He has been consulted on every move that we have made since he has been here. Dont you think he would be surly in interviews if he were unhappy. He’s onboard with the current position we are taking because the Nets arent settling for medocrity. Im sure he is willing to wait 3 and 1/2 months if it means he will play with the best center in basketball for the next 5 years.

Who cares if we lose to the Knicks in the preseason or if we are only a .500 club until March. We can be the 8th seed with DWill and Howard and still make a run in the playoffs this year.

by DWILL-of-the-GODZ on Dec 18, 2011 5:43 PM EST reply actions

if we are only a .500 club until March

there’s no way we are a .500 team come March if this is our roster until then. Not even the slightest chance.

Why not in your own mind Andres

keep open the possibility of Dwight coming here now, rather than just concede until March? Until told otherwsie, it’s still a possibility.

RIP baby. I love you forever. Our dream of seeing D12 with the Nets is getting closer.

by lupojohn3 on Dec 18, 2011 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

If we arent then Dwill isnt a top PG

DWill is a top 3 player
Lopez is a 20/10 guy
Morrow/Brooks is a good rotation at SG
James is good enough at SF
All we lack is a PF

there’s no way we are a .500 team come March if this is our roster until then. Not even the slightest chance.

Last year Ins made the 8 seed with a 45.1% winning percentage.

Even if we get Howard at the trade deadline we still have 22 games of DWill/Howard they should win at least 14 of those.

30 wins should get the 8th seed (45% of 66) All we need is to win 16 of our 1st 44 games 32%
. We should be able to do that easily

by DWILL-of-the-GODZ on Dec 18, 2011 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

You mean top 3 PG?

Because Deron is not a top 3 player.

I think it's fine.

by NetsMets4Life on Dec 18, 2011 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Correct Top 3 PG. But he is top 7 all players so it's semantics

The point being is we should win at least a 3rd of our games without D12 and easily win at least 60% with D12

If Dwight wants Gil… we must take him. He obviously would be a starter, and Farmar would prob be gone with a Dwight trade. This makes perfect sense to me. I just with something would break already!

I think he will sign with the Knicks

with baron hurt he will be able to see time off the bench. The Nets right now are a d league team it’s no problem because that is the plan,

I think the problem could be if this goes on till March we will likely be out of the playoffs which will make Dwight think twice about the nets.

Also a bad team will hurt Brook Lopez chances of making an all star game. Unless he is breaking records (Kevin Love) or a highlight machine (Blake Griffin.)

I DO want to be Orlando! They went to the Finals! They are in contention every year. Gah, I am sick of sucking. Only one team wins every year, and over the last 30 years less then 10 different teams have won it. I dont need to put together a “championship” team because no one can guarantee that or even knows what that means.

Ironic part of this whole Dwight saga..

Is that with all the holes and problems and scrubs this team has, the center position is on of our stronger areas with Brook. And now were willing to throw trash out there all season with hopes of upgrading(yes its a big upgrade) a position we already have some talent at.

I said it before. Even after a Dwight trade, this team is so flawed its going to be a long way to a contender. Especially with more limited assets.

if the Nets can dump Farmar

We currently have 38 million in guaranteed salaries for 10 players (Graham and Udoka assumed cut) or still 4 million from the salary floor of 42. If there’s no Farmar, we can sign somebody for 7-8 mil and still be able to absorb Dwight and Hedo without having to trade that player we signed/re-signed.

If its rashard lewis or hedo- thats pitiful, they deserve to lose him. At least we can say worst case we lose D-will- we did EVERYTHING in our power to acquire D12. Yeah Ive been concerned about the Mavs ever since D-will was traded here. I could totally see him wearing a Mavs jersey. I think thats the likeliest place he’d bolt to. Dirk still has a good 4 years of elite level basketball in him. Thats a pretty good window for D-will. But the ball is still in the Nets court- we have more leverage than we might realize. Id say if we fail to get D12…before the deadline we have to quickly spin off D-will for the best package in return- my man Russell Westbrook. That should be our escape option. You still go to Brooklyn with a bona fide star PG in his prime- you might even get Ibaka back depending on how much they want D-will…and we get to keep our picks in a very very deep draft.

So Worst Case ( if they like my plan lol)..

Yep Howard would REALLY benefit from an elite PG like Dwill or CP3

If the game in on the line, I trust Brook more to get a bucket or fouled from the post tbh…. but Howard’s D is what makes him a great player

Lol, I honestly think Lopez gets bashed and is underappreciated way to much

he’s also a underrated shot blocker, but the dude was playing hurt last season. Honestly, Howard offensive game isn’t suited to be option number #1, and he would be even better if he did play with D-Willz.

Dwight or Bust

by Shameer1016 on Dec 18, 2011 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

Lopez gets overlooked because of a terrible rebounding season + bad defense from last season

But during his first two years EVERYONE was gaga over him… hollinger considered him like the 15th most valuable player LOL!

Brook will return to form this year getting 20/8-11/1.5-2.5/ a night this year… last year he looked like a zombie, this year he looks good and in shape.

Howard has no post moves

He relies HEAVILY on his freak athleticism to score. He can still get you 20 a night but most of those points would come from easy dunks/ free throws.

So my question is...

How do we surround a Dwight-Dwill pairing with some offense. I mean right now we’re severely lacking both but Brook seems to be our highest scorer (Brook, Deron, Morrow).

by Ccrules2791 on Dec 18, 2011 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

By keeping Brook

and signing Howard in the offseason =P

by OPtEeMoOSh on Dec 18, 2011 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

Morrow is the SG, Hedo will be the SF with $hes making

they will need to figure out something at PF position until offseason to sign someone actually decent with MLE

although they are both shooters.. but terrible on D

you would need a PF that can stretch the floor...

Not necessarily to the 3pt line, but stretch the floor.
You would 2 or 3 good deadly shooters which we got in Morrow and Extra E
and you would need a legit Wing 2/3 that can score/take ppl off the dribble

Guess what

Put it this way orlando are no where near contending and turk got hurt even though its probably not so bad…but dont u guys think that they have a lot of pressure now to trade him asap because dwight doesnt even look like he cares and if turk gets a serious injury that takes him out for the season or for a while, meaning that they wouldn’t be able to trade him. if they really want turk to get traded they better make that trade asap b4 he gets injured. what do u guys think?

by Dr3WMaN87 on Dec 18, 2011 8:27 PM EST reply actions

I think Turk's injury is the 2nd key to this

Whether it’s serious or not, they know they have to include him in any trade, so I think this will push them along even further.

There's a case of the Crazies goin' on 'rond here.

Brook plays his heart out and plays well and even rebounds!
Board Response: "Oh, it’s just pre-season. He got lucky. Oh, it was a quiet 15/11/5/.

Dwight stinks up the joint:
Board Response: Oh, he’s sending a message. He’s Rusty. That was NOT evidence he has a limited post-game. He’s taking a stand.

The reaction should have Reality and been:
Geez. are guy may be a lame duck, and he still plays with heart, hasn’t missed a game in a year despite management surrounding him w/guys like Graham and Petro and trying to tank every season since he got here. And yet still the guy is one of the most talented centers in the league and plays through the disrespect. Warrior! I love him. Glad he’s on my team. He should be the guy we build around.
And Equally:
Geez that guy had an arena built for him. Management actually bends over backwards for him. He plays hard when he feels like it.. His game is dominant, yet still limited. He’s petulant and wishy washy. And he doesn’t seem to have fire. And now, he’s not being professional. Wow, I’m thinking it’s a bad idea to waste another year tanking and then giving up 8 years of draft picks and a borderline star and pieces for this kind of player.
