Backcourt Big Strength...On Offense

PrintMike Mazzeo of ESPN New York is breaking down the Nets roster and starts from strength, the Nets backcourt which if only because of Deron Williams has to be counted among the best in the NBA, on offense. Mazzeo cites the amazing offensive abilities --and consistency-- of the five guards with guaranteed deals.
But he also suggests that the Nets backcourt is not what you would call an defensive juggernaut. Williams is "capable of playing tenacious defense when he wants to," he writes. Anthony Morrow "isn't a great defender by any means", Marshon Brooks "defense still leaves much to be desired" although he could improve. As for Jordan Farmar and Sundiata Gaines, Mazzeo is silent on their defense.

I did notice Brooks seemed to improve defensively as the game went on. Seemed to calm down a bit, may have come out a bit overexcited

Also thought he looked upset/frustrated that teammates were no looking his way. Rook has to show more mental toughness but it was said that he looked better as the game went on.

Whats really scary about this team..
Is how far they clearly are from being real contenders. Even if we trade for Dwight, theres just too many holes everywhere else.
Not enough smart, veteran players. Not enough athleticism and toughness down low. (Besides Dwight)
Its a long road.

If we get Dwight all we need is one stronf sf/or pf and we’ll be inthe top 5 in the east. Idk if it’s possible but this lineup to me looks like a solid/great team

I agree with this. Hypothetical roster after Dwight
Dwight, Shelden, Hedo, Morrow, Deron, Gaines, Shawne, James, Duhon, Brooks, JWill
That’s a pretty sad team even with Deron and Dwight.
You can add some guys later on, but how far will you really get with the mid-level? That’s what, 5 million?
I mean, you can still be a 50 win team with this

Scary about the team....
The net should sign aaron afflalo to be their new starting sg and have morrow and brooks off the bench. Afflalo give the nets the D they have lacked at sg since kerry kittles. He is avail though he is a rfa, he can still be signed. Very very good defensively and can hit the open shot.
Defense is definitely still gonna be an issue this year
Brook blocks shots, but his rotations still aren’t good at times. James still has his inexperienced moments, Brooks is likewise inexperienced. Morrow is just bad and everyone knows it. Shelden can rebound but isn’t some great defender by any means, Petro is a foul machine, Farmar isn’t really above average or anything (gives up a 17.5 PER to opposing PGs)

Then Brooks needs to have a "mysterious injury" before the Dwight Howard trade so he can't be included.

Okay I get that we are a bad team
but honestly lets look at this realistic. Does anyone believe that King doesn’t have a plan. This year is too important and he knows this. I am not saying Dwight is in the bag but if you have a chance to get a player like Dwight you take it.
Lets be honest signing hump to a 2 or 3 year deal isn’t going to keep Deron here. We either get Dwight or we lose. It’s that simple. Lets be honest a team of hump or nene isn’t going to be able to compete with the Knicks. The Nets would be the Clippers.
I know the team is bad but I’m glad there is a plan. I know the plan may not workout. Hell it’s very very likely it will back fire but at the same time don’t stress yourself out

Offense
Lopez should be screening for Dwill at half court to rub the defender and pull his defender out of the paint. Dwill can attack tthe basket, pass the ball when a defender rotates, flip the ball to lopez at the foul line or score for himself. There need to be more pick and roll plays and Morrow need the ball more. He needs 15 shots per game to keep the defense honest and off of Brook.
The Nets should be using the fullcourt press if they really want to take advatage of the teams strengths and pgs being in game shape. You can’t run if you don’t play D.

There's still a need to sign a cheap, D-and-3 SG
Bogans, Stevenson, etc. They’re not very good but probably available for minimum in a limited role. At least to show Morrow and Marshon what defense looks like.
