For Shawne Williams, Special Debut

Shawne Williams admits it will be weird Saturday afternoon when takes the floor at the Prudential Center and looks down the other end of the court and sees the team that gave him a second chance last season. Less than 48 hours after agreeing to terms with the Nets, he will be facing his old team, the Knicks.

The 6'9" combo forward with the sweet stroke and 7'3" wingspan won't be starting but he is expected to play. And when he does, it will be all business just as his decision to join New Jersey was. "It was a career decision, and mostly a business decision," Williams said. "It was a hard decision to make, but I feel like I made the right decision. I did it for me, my family and my career, basically."

Tbh he's had one "good" season where he shot 40% 1.3 for 3.3 Per game,

Can he really repeat that or was it a product of the Knicks hi-tempo offense the nets are trying to copy?

by Gr8tness on Dec 17, 2011 7:07 AM EST up reply actions

im not saying he'll repeat those numbers but it spreads the court

which is what you need to clear the lane for a dominant big guy

Shawne's 1.3 of 3.3 40% 3PT he put up in around 21 minutes

Favorably compares with Morrow’s 1.9 of 4.5 42% in 32 minutes.

Williams’ 3.7 rebounds and 0.8 block in just under 21 minutes are also pretty good numbers.

Sign Hump and Ike Diogu at PF.

Sign Hump and give Ike Diogu the minimum and you have three PFs with Sheldon Wiliiams and can afford Jordan Williams to play at Springfield.

Shawne Williams and Damion James can also play PF in a pinch.

Let’s see a Shawne three today. Just poop!

from rotoworld - pre fantasy draft

New Jersey Nets

A starting lineup on opening night should look like Deron Williams, Anthony Morrow, Damion James, Shelden Williams and Brook Lopez. Actually, Shelden Williams will hopefully not be starting for the Nets, but they’re so thin at PF right now it’s a possibility. They’re still talking to Kris Humphries, so we’ll see. Travis Outlaw was waived and Shawne Williams was signed from the Knicks, and Williams will likely challenge James for the starting SF job. I have James winning it for now. Deron should be in great shape after playing during the lockout, Morrow and James are sleepers if they can stay healthy and hang onto starting jobs, while Lopez will hopefully improve on his six rebounds per game. There’s still a lot of talk out there about Dwight Howard going to the Nets, but that’s not worth worrying about until something actually happens. Draft results: Deron 9th, Lopez 24th and Humphries 96th.

Question

If Dwight isn’t traded by the Jan. deadline I know he cannot sign for as much money, but if it goes past that deadline does Dwight stand to lose more if he is not traded at the deadline or would he get the same contract as an honest-to-goodness free agent.

by gsloots on Dec 17, 2011 9:39 AM EST reply actions

because Orlando loses leverage after that date

Dwight could say that he not committing to any team because he is going to become a free agent regardless and weigh his options then. The Nets could retain their assets and Dwight and Deron would walk into Brooklyn with a much better team. Right now the Nets have all the leverage.

Brooklyn
PG: Williams
SG: Morrow/ Brooks/Bogdanovic
SF: S. Williams/ James
PF: Lopez/ Williams
C: Howard/Petro

Now I think Petro would be easy to trade and would still have Bird rights of some of their free agents. The draft is deep where they would be able to add two more pieces (say McAdoo at PF and A. Thomas at SF) in the first round. Not sure all the pieces fit but you would have tons of flexibility if they didn’t.

by gsloots on Dec 17, 2011 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

one more time, that is WRONG

January 1 is relevant ONLY if the player wants an extension on his current contract. Neither Howard nor D-Will is seeking an extension. They plan opt out of the final year of their contracts and become free agents. If they are both on the Nets, the Nets will retain their Bird Rights and be able to sign Williams to five years and $101 million, Howard to five years and $109 million.

now the new CBA allows for different rules on extensions

I know I read that they can lower the salary in beginning years on an extention. Would it be possible to extend Dwight after a set time and increase his salary? How does that work?

There is still hope

At least I hope that Dwight could be convinced to wait out free agency under the premise that Deron would be the captain, but Dwight would be the figurehead in the marketing campaign. I would think that they could convince Dwight’s people that he would make more than enough money to compensate for lost salary and grow his brand tremendously.

The longer Smith waits, the more arena is built and the excitement behind Brooklyn as well as the lure will grow.

what I expect today

Knicks may have more talent on the floor today but I believe the Net will have a conditioning advantage, led by D-Will and Farmar, who I expect to see on the court together.

This will not be a real game. Johnson has said he will give the three D-Leaguers significant time at the end of the game. Horner is probably the best prospect of the three of them, but he is seen as more than a year and a lot of strength away.

James will get a lot of touches. Nets like the idea of him and Williams playing both positions up front.

The Nets will run, run, run.

Lopez will score a lot of points.

More rumors tonight.

On a normal year it would probably easily be top 5 (have to give it a few more listens to say for sure), but I’m guessing after a few more listens it will still settle in somewhere around 6 after Together/Apart, Undun, Oneiroloy, All 6s and 7s, and maybe Adventures in Counter-Culture. Haven’t listened to Common’s new album yet either.

I don't know if is "fat" but I think it had to do more with his cardio............

like McKnight with the Jets. Remember he was “about” to go play overseas when the lockout ended so he really never played like some others(Dwill/Gaines/Farmer etc) and now it seems like he didn’t even workout over the summer either which that falls on him. We read about Brooks working out, Lopez training with “The Dream” and some others but never JWilll.

We were in agreement

at first when we both thought he would be a Clipper and we were also in agreement as recently as today since we both thought he would be a Laker. Your now think he will be a Net. Happy to hear it.

Your predictions seem to always be on track so im hoping the trend continues and Dwight ends up a Net. I personally think Otos is enamored with Bynum and Gasol. I think Otis is firmly against rebuilding and when push becomes shove, the Lakers will eventually cave and give up Gasol and Bynum.

by WR3 on Dec 17, 2011 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

Well, I'm not a psychic.

I utilize all of the evidence that’s in front of me and make a general assessment of how I expect the situation to turn out. As a result, my ‘predictions’ are subject to (relative) change.

It’s not in my nature to stick by a conclusion just for the sake of it — I’m not Killa or Lupo — if there’s new information that would indicate a change, then my opinion adjusts along with it.

I’ve been saying Howard would be a Net since the Nets decided not to use up their cap-space (so whenever Nene resigned with the Nuggets). I crossed the Clippers off when they resigned DeAndre Jordan to that contract. Still don’t think the Lakers are a good situation for Howard.

I also think — and I’ve been ‘consistent’ with this — that the Nets won’t get him until March (or later).

by Dopeness on Dec 17, 2011 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

Ya

Once a huge threat im not looking at the Clippers anymore. I agree with your points. I however cannot see Otis making the right move by rebuilding. I feel this way based on his signings. He will try to stay competitive so its really up to the Lakers. If they give up both Gasol and Bynum then Otis will trade Dwight there. Will Dwight resign? Prolly not. I agree that the situation in LA is getting ugly and Dwight might prefer us come 2012

When can i get my Dwight Howard Brooklyn Nets Jersey?

So?

That’s to be expected. not changing his mind. As he said after the private meeting with Otis, ‘’I don’t go back and forth’’.

Key matchup today..

Melo was 30&10 in 4 games against our two defensive specialists in Travis outlaw and Stephan Graham. I want to see how he will match up against an unproven Damion James and Shawne Williams.
The one thing I like tho, is the fact that Melo will have to play defense against us this season cause James is a slasher and Shawne can shoot.
Gunna be fun having morrow Shawne and D-will around the perimeter. Gives Lopez and hopefully Hump 1on1 opportunities.

It would be el harsho

but at least we’d have that flexibility for a trade. Even if not Howard, a wing…Howard will be ours in FA anyhow. If we trade for a wing he’ll just want to come here more….might not even talk to other teams come FA.

Semi-skeptical of Shawne though

His rookie year: 19/52 threes (36.5%)
2nd year: 43/137 threes (31.4%)
3rd year: 1/17 threes (5.9%)
Then suddenly, 4th year, 85/212 (40.1%)

Draftexpress on Shawne, 2009

Displays a quick release on his jumper, but isn’t always consistent with his form or rhythm. Will take some shots from beyond the arc, but proves erratic at best. A mediocre catch and shoot option, especially since with a hand in his face.

Got a theory as to why Dwight wants to come to Brooklyn...

My Father is a old head. He played pro ball in the negro leagues for Memphis. His first love was baseball although he lettered in everything (Baseball, Football, Basketball, Track and Tennis – I may have forgotten something). Anyway, Dude has a real affinity for Brooklyn because he used to go to Ebbets Field as a teenager. Why, Jackie Robinson. That guy was a role model for most young black boys of that era. (should’a seen my Dad’s face decades later when he saw the huge project building sitting where Ebbet’s Field use to be – kinda sad for me actually)

Well if you take a look at Dwight Sr. you’ll see that Dudes gotta be pressing 60 or more. That would mean that he was up and around in the 50’s/ 60’s probably as a small child in South Georgia and he had to know who Jackie Robinson was. My assessment is that D12’s pop’s opinion is much more in play than anybody has stated. He made the one quick statement when this all started and you haven’t heard a peep from his since. Dwight is only 26. Guarantee you Daddio is knee deep in it…..and my guess is his Pop’s an old head like my old man and he also has an affinity for Brooklyn. I mean there was no black professional athlete before Brooklyn and Jackie Robinson (unless we’re talking Thomas Molineaux – look him up). Bottomline, Dwight’s coming.

Meantime, let me get the salsa and chips warmed up for 2pm.
