Doing The Nets' Roster Math
As of Thursday evening, the Nets have 11 players with guaranteed deals that extend beyond Christmas. That doesn't include Stephen Graham who the Nets have to make a decision within the next 10 days or their two top free agent targets, Andrei Kirilenko and Kris Humphries. It does include Shelden and Shawne Williams.
And they are still $18 to $19 million under the salary cap. With the waiving of Travis Outlaw, there is only one Net with a contract that will pay more than $4 million this season: Deron Williams and only one who's owed $10 million over the course of their contracts: again, D-Will. So, as John Schuhmann writes, "they could give Kirilenko a pretty lucrative one-year deal."

with the new rules your allowed to take 150% of salaries back
so no matter what if we traded AK we can take back 18 mil why not at least have a player that can contribute. Plus if we use any other contracts that increases to more then the cap we would have available
No you have to
The Nets need veterans and have to hit the salary floor. I’d rather spend it on AK47 than anyone else out there right now.

But is there something I’m missing with ak47?

If we have no interest in anyone else besides AK & Hump...
then (Cap Room – Hump Cap Hold) seems reasonable to offer to AK…then we can sign Hump to anything we want and go over to do so
maybe we could add three pieces hump ak
And someone else??

I'm betting they are close to having some deals in place with Hump and/or AK
I would not doubt that there will be ONE last ditch effort for Dwight, given his comments today, his attitude, and some pushing by Fegan.
If you read the comments on the Sentinel, people want him out of there. Calling him names, wishing him ill will, ready to boo him.
I think Billy might make another phone call, and after that, we’ll talk again in March.

I can see AK playing hardball
He’s comfortable playing overseas right now. Hump on the other hand is only making tabloid headlines. The preseason is almost here, and we haven’t heard of a single suitor or potential offer. He’s obviously asking for way too much, and I’m sure many teams don’t want to deal with the circus surrounding him right now.
I think Hump can get 3 / 25
So not sure why he’d take 1 year at 10 with us.

10 and 10?
In 25mpg last year is worth more than the MLE.
Dude averaged 14 and 14 w/ Deron and you don’t want to pay him 5m/yr??
Yes
What did he do for the rest of his career? He put up gaudy numbers once on a terrible team. He’s also surrounded by nothing but tabloid controversy right now.
How many teams have you heard offering him any contract let alone a big contract? That should give you an indication of his worth.
Sorry
All that really matters is the contract year. That is how players get paid, for better or worse.
In this case, this was Humps first real opportunity, he took advantage, and it is also his contract year.
It's just a case of the grass being greener on the other side. The Kardashian thing is what hurt him.
If there was a PF who averaged 10.0 PTS and 10.4 REB on another team on 52.7% FG% that was 2nd in the league in total rebound percentage, we would be dying to sign him.
Especially if said player had little to no interest on the FA market.
The Nets should definitely keep this guy.
Just to put it in perspective.
Defensive Rebound Percentage:
Humphries (2nd) – 32.2%
Dwight Howard – 30.6%
Offensive Rebound Percentage:
Dwight Howard – 12.6%
Humphries (5th) – 12.5%
Total Rebound Percentage:
Kris Humphries(2nd) – 22.1%
Dwight Howard – 21.8%
The other metrics seem to bear this out. Humphries has seen the majority of his defense in the post, and while he’s not a top-tier defender, he’s certainly been impressive. According to Synergy Sports Technology, in 113 post defense possessions Humphries has allowed just 0.81 points per possession, holding opponents to just 42% shooting and forcing 11 turnovers. Over the course of the season, Humphries has shown that he’s capable of using his wide upper body to defend backdowns, as well as his surprisingly agile feet to cut off quick moves. He’s not great by any measure, but he’s pretty good – definitely better than I’d expected.
But the numbers that really surprised me were the ones in isolation.
Humphries has utterly shut down opponents in isolation sets this season. He’s shut down players in isolation at every position – literally, he’s been switched onto little guys like Steve Nash & Jose Calderon, to wings like Carmelo Anthony and Tayshaun Prince, to bigs like Carlos Boozer, Dirk Nowitzki, & David West, and he’s stopped all of them.
(Yes, Blake Griffin too.)
Perhaps opponents think they can score on him in isolation, but he’s got quicker hands and feet than nearly everyone expects, and most guys just end up throwing up bad shots when they’re unable to create good looks.
The numbers don’t lie: in iso, Humphries is allowing just 19-71 shooting (26.8%) and has forced eight turnovers. That adds up to just 0.6 points per possession. That’s, obviously, one of the best marks in the NBA.
It’s certainly strange that a guy who’s so well known for dating a superstar outside of basketball can play like the polar opposite – the dude just busts his butt constantly on both sides of the floor. While that adds up to an efficient – albeit low-usage – player on the offensive side, it’s weirdly the defense that he’s shown that he can stick with some of the best players in the NBA. I still have questions about his rotations – the Nets aren’t a great defensive team, and he’s got a lion’s share of that responsibility – but there’s no question that the guy has ramped it up on the defensive side of the floor.
http://netsarescorching.com/2011/03/17/kris-humphries-defensive-wizard/
Humphries:
Career Rebound Rate: 18.0%
04 – 14.0%
05 – 15.4%
06 – 16.4%
07 – 16.6%
08 – 15.5%
09 – 17.8%
10 – 22.1%
He’s been improving. He can definitely rebound at around 18.0% and pick up 10 points a game with D-Will lobbing him alley-oops.
This dude would be coveted if he hadn’t married a foisoin boiso. He would be a great signing.

Then it won’t be as hard. Because it won’t be about gathering the right package, just the Magic ownership signing off on the deal
I'm sure the Nets will get AK by Saturday on a 1 year

dont see why he would take a one year deal, knowing he would likely get traded in a few months

If we sign AK to a large 1-year expiring contract
and then we trade him, say, to Orlando, do we get a large trade exception in return? How does a team acquire these sorts of large trade exceptions?

this is what i could find
Traded Player Exception: If a team trades away a player with a higher salary than the player they acquire in return (we’ll call this initial deal “Trade #1”), they receive what is called a Traded Player Exception, also known colloquially as a “Trade Exception”. Teams with a trade exception have up to a year in which they can acquire more salary in other trades (Trade #2, #3, etc.) than they send away, as long as the gulf in salaries for Trade #2, #3, etc. are less than or equal to the difference in salary for Trade #1. This exception is particularly useful when teams trade draft picks straight-up for a player; since draft picks have no salary value, often the only way to get salaries to match is to use a trade exception, which allows trades to be made despite unbalanced salaries. It is also useful to compensate teams for losing free agents as they can do a sign and trade of that free agent to acquire a trade exception that can be used later. Note this exception is for single player trades only, though additional cash and draft picks can be part of the trade.

Call Utah for a Petro for Okur swap
Okur’s now dispensable for Utah with Jefferson/Kanter and Millsap/Favors.
Petro’s tragic but his smaller contract will save Utah around 5 mil in total.
Okur would be a nice back-up to Brook, maybe even allow Brook to slide to PF in some situations if they’re together. A big man shooter, not known for defense but a decent rebounder.
The cap hit though would be 10.9 less 3.2, so 7.7 but he’s a tradable expiring. Only after we get Hump and AK; preferably we’re also able to dump Farmar for cap space.
Okur didnt play in 3 years
what make’s you belive he wont get hurt again? and he will ask for cake bet on that. AK with his broken body is a same way finished

Doesn't matter
He’s an expiring deal. Saves Petro’s money off next year’s cap.
Its about the expiring contract
Okur makes 10m this year, so the Nets could take that on and get rid of Petros 3.5m for the next 2 years
it aint about salary cap all the time
with the roster that we have now we need depth at 4 and 5. Beside’s we have so many expiring or easy tradeable contracts i dont think we need more, what we need is good players right now.
by Aidar Berlinbayev on Dec 15, 2011 7:49 PM EST up reply actions
expiring contract as pointed out
tradable this year, gone next year, unlike Petro.
Okur was hurt most of last year, the only season he didn’t play 72-82 games, so it’s baseles to say he “didn’t play in 3 years”. Seemed healthy in Turkey. He’ll be a better back-up than Petro and a more tradable/useful expiring contract.
PF/C:
Hump, Shelden
Lopez, Okur
And with Morrow, Williams the Shawne one, and Okur, we’d have shooters of all sizes!

To make a difference with Dwight Howard we need another big man...
In Orlando, Dwight only has shooters around him, and their game become addicted to that. They only play inside to Dwight, and the rest of their game is raining 3’s all night because Dwight demands double and triple teams, they make little mid range shots, so their game become predictable.
A team with Dwight and another nice big man that can play some good offense is unbeateable.
Dwight and Lopez together would be amazing, alongside DWill, we just needed to add defenders and shooters
DWill all the way to the Finals!! some day, very close...
We should only spend to the salary floor of $50m

Question about Dwight...
If he gets traded to the Lakers in March, is it a foregone conclusion he re-signs in the off season? If he plays out the year there and just doesn’t seem to get along with Kobe, maybe theres a chance he doesnt stay.
nah, he would sign that extension no doubt about it

Thats what im saying..
I know Dwight loves the city of LA but what if they get bounced early in the playoffs and Dwight is frustrated with his role playing next to Kobe? Meanwhile, hes got a great PG sittin here.

MAN!!!
I just got done explaining to my wife this crazy conspiracy theory. I told her that I think the trade was a done deal but it wasn’t Orl ownership that nixed it but the league privately asked all 3 teams to hold off until the CP3 dust settles. The league looks bad right now. Go read Woj’s piece today about Stern and how that whole CP3 mess developed.
It sounds crazy but part of that whole Portland side of the trade was that they wanted to shed Wallace’s contract before signing Crawford. Now that Crawford is signed, looks like at least that little tidbit of the 3 team trade came to fruition.
Just yesterday we find out that D12 was telling teammates he was ‘OUT’…on his way to the Garden State!!!! From reports we read throughout Wednesday ,we all automatically make the presumption that Otis agreed but never brought it to ownership for approval. But i wonder though…wouldn’t a GMz agreement mean he already got the “go ahead” from ownership? With DWill, we all read how that trade developed…the call was about other players then the discussion eventually became DWill. Billy and Utah’s GM found the pieces…Utah GM went to ownership and got the ok and only then did Billy and Utah have the agreement. See where I’m going with this? There’s a chance IMO that the D12 “agreed upon” trade was absolutely “agreed upon” by all parties, even by Orl ownership.
The league would not have looked good to see two super stars move to their choice of destination. CP3 may not be a Laker or Knick…or Net ;-)…but he’s in a big market with a pretty darn good team now. So ummm, he got what he wanted. Then throw in a Dwight trade to his choice(Nets!!!!) in the same week? I’m telling you, this would not look good at all for the NBA.
I don’t think it’s farfetched to think that the NBA asked for this trade to be put on hold. Wishful thinking? I don’t wish for silly things…but I think my idea has some merit to it.
Then again...
Otis is an idiot so he mighta just said yeah sure w/o consulting

If you can't match someone in points after 6 years
compared to someone inn 3 years, I don’t think shoot % matters that much.
And its not like Lopez has a bad shoot% too and is chucking up 22-25 shots per game
Nets Mets Giants ALL DAY
don’t get me wrong, i do think without a doubt that Brook Lopez is the better player. But, if you factor in the fact that he’s a better rebounder, defender and more efficient scorer, he’s pretty much what most teams would want in a center. Lopez however, has one of the most unstoppable offensive arsenals in the game, good free throw shooting and is very durable. I’ll take his pros over Bynum’s (not so hard to find) pros any day.
Look...
…if Bynum could stay healthy, he can be nasty. “But if my aunt had a beard, she’d be my uncle”(thanks Mike Kay for that one!).
Odd…if I had to choose between BLo and Bynum if they were on the draft board…be hard to pass up Bynum just from a physical standpoint. Luckily, we’ve gotten to see what they both can do at this point in their careers and Lopez looks like he can be special in his own right.
thats what

Appearing on SportsCenter, Smith said "I predicted that Kobe Bryant will demand a trade, and I am not budging from that. He’s livid. I’ve known Kobe too long. He is ticked off.
"It’s not just because [the Clippers] got Chris Paul, which is a guy that he expected to have. It’s because Jim Buss seems to be doing the inexplicable," Smith said. "It makes no sense. It’s one thing for the team not to have improved [after losing to the Mavericks], it’s another thing entirely for them to regress. If you know anything about Kobe, that is the last thing that he wants to do.
Kobe wants to add
Not swap. Howard would strip them of all frontcourt depth, and Kobe knows it’s a move for the future, not the present. Kobe would rather see the Lakers use their trade exception & picks on bring in additional help, e.g. Millsap, Mo Williams, etc. rather than thin the team out further.
Nah muwu
If he’s this ticked off, the last thing that’ll happen is for the Lakers to tarde Pau and Bynum.

unless a bad team wanted him to just sell tickets.. where would he accept a trade to?
He's got a few years on his contract
A team wouldn’t need a guarantee. But I don’t see him getting traded.
he has to agree to the trade to
Cant see him agreeing to go to a small market or bad team.. has a no trade clause
say what you want
but kobe’s malcontent attitude is probably the reason they won two more championships after shaq. i don’t think that front office would’ve been motivated enough to build another great team if they weren’t being pressured by a superstar who is so miserable when he loses. i wish we had a player that “whined” like kobe.
i dont even get why lakers fans love kobe so much
remember last time they didn’t look to be contenders in the pre-season? what did kobe do? asked for a trade. this guy is such a whiney entitled little moiso. he has 5 rings already, you don’t have to win a title every year you’re in the league. he also whined and cried until they got rid of shaq when they didn’t get along. guy is a whiner plain and simple.

You expect to get a pick for Petro?
Try trading Petro with a pick to get rid of him
They might need a backup center
But they don’t need Petro
Not even for a 2nd
Only thing I can think is if they want to dump Gomes, but his contract is slightly higher than Petro’s. The only reason why we consider it is because he could give us some Forward depth.

Yes you can
Player contracts can be renegotiated downward in extensions, as long as the player’s salary does not decrease by more than 40 percent. Previously, renegotiations could only increase a player’s salary. This could provide another key avenue for teams to maintain roster flexibility and add players with space created by restructuring existing contracts, similar to the NFL.

"Your 2010-2011 New Jersey Nets - It Is What It Is"
I think that was misinterpreted
Coon had a tweet the other day stating that he thinks that the language in the official CBA document makes it sound like you’re only permitted to have lower annual salaries in the extended years. For example if a player is in the final year of his contract earning $10mil, he can sign a 2 year extension for $6mil per season.
Here's my roster by the end of the year(Dec 31)
PF-Hump
SF-Turkoglu
C-Dwight(obviously)
PG-Deron
SG-Morrow
Bench: Shawne, Shelden, Marshon, Duhon, Udoka, Jordan, and you can insert the 12th man.

No. Dwight will be traded at the deadline.
Since talks are now off you can count on Marshon being included in the Dwight trade when it does happen which really sucks.

I agree avilane
It’s once again too quiet, and BK left open the possiblity of a trade.
I'm bipolar. Just remember to read this before you respond to or read my comments. Someone here forgot to.
I know this
But what you apparently don’t know is that Orlando ownership said Dwight is off the trade block. They can field trades, it doesnt matter because they don’t have any intentions of trading him RIGHT NOW.
Which is why i say he will be traded at the deadline. So….. Come on, bro!
Why do you think BK is signing FA’s now? Because a Dwight trade isn’t happening right now. BK was holding off because he needed the cap for the Dwight trade. That obviously isn’t happening right now or he wouldn’t be signing players till AFTER the trade went down.
So again, unfortunately when Dwight does get traded Marshon will have passed his 30 days after signing so he is free to be traded. I can’t imagine Orlando not wanting him included.
He's not waiting to sign players because
he needs 12 to play against the Knicks. He has 11 days until the season starts. And I don’t care what ownership says. They’ve said so much moiso since this began that I take nothing they say seriously. Between the tampering charges, then he’s off the block and then Otis says they’re taking offers, they have no idea. If BK can just add some stuff to the deal + Fegan putting the pressure on + Dwight finally speaking up for himself, I think ownership will eventually realize it’s a mess that they’ll want no part of.
I'm bipolar. Just remember to read this before you respond to or read my comments. Someone here forgot to.

Nope
It’s the lesser of 150% or $5mil. There’s loopholes to get around that though, such as multiple simultaneous trades.

From Billy's Mouth
"We will add some more pieces," King said. "We’ll get there. It just may not be [by] opening day, but I think our fans shouldn’t panic because we didnt’ get names. We’re trying to build a team."
"I happen to be in Philadelphia quite a bit," said King, the 76′ers GM for nine years. "[The Eagles] have the dream team and it didnt’ work out for them. They [got] every big name in free agency, and it just didn’t work out. So, sometimes it’s not always about the names you get. It’s how you put it together."
"I didn’t foresee the salaries going where they did," King said. "And once they did, it gave me a little pause to back off a little bit, because — I did it in Philly, where you lock in. And if you don’t have a championship-caliber team, it’s hard to regroup."
"I just think [patience] is the way to go," King continued. "I guess maybe as I’ve gotten older and wiser, you’re a little more patient and understanding. The great thing about it is the relationship that I’ve developed with Deron and Avery’s developed with Deron and our team. The great thing is that we’re all on the same page.
"We understand what we’re trying to get to and that’s where the confidence comes from, I guess. We all understand where we’re trying to get to, and we don’t want to make a mistake."

Billy has grown up quite a bit as a GM from his Philly days. He understands he needs to wait this out. The worst possible scenario is for this team load up on fat contracts for mediocre players just for the sake of making the playoffs and feeding into the mass hysteria of the masses (who refuse to see the big picture). I much prefer to be in our current position than a team like the Knicks who will win plenty of games but not sniff a championship with that roster.

No reason it can't be
All that has to happen is for pressure to keep being applied. Orlando’s ownership doesn’t seem too smart, and when you pressure people who aren’t smart, they have to think, but since that requires being smart, they’ll just do the easy thing and cave in.

That article doesn't say that,
Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said he has discussed Kirilienko with his agent, Marc Fleischer. The Kings have made an offer to Kirilenko, who could command as much as $9 million per season.
Kirilenko does not appear to be in a hurry to return to the NBA.
“He’s still in Russia and he’s playing for CSKA (Moscow) and he’s under contract over there,” Petrie said.

After Dwight still demanding a trade, it’s clear that he wants Magic management to give one more go before the season. He clearly got annoyed and said are you gonna ask me about this every day? This saga will just drag on the whole season…but this Saturday I think is the deadline to trade him before the season, cuz otherwise we have to get Hump and AK

because Orlando doesn't find our offer
appealing. The Lakers offer Pau and Bynum? Done deal

depends
if they are struggling??
yes
if they are on top of the west?? no.
thing is anything that makes the lakers feel they need to make a splash or change up is bad for the nets.

all i’m saying is if LA does do that trade it’s basically rebuilding in 2 years
by avilanets85 on Dec 15, 2011 10:21 PM EST up reply actions
depends where they are at come march
they might be there any way. Better to rebuild with Howard right?

idk bro i didn’t hear him request a trade to LA. all i hear is jersey baby. yeah i’m bias

He has 4 teams he prefers
Lakers a team that can give the magic what they want and offer blows the Nets away.
Dallas a team that is not in play unless Dwight is not traded. They don’t have the pieces or the players to make a deal work.
Nets the team we keep hearing but can’t put a package that will get the job done. Even though the Owners are calling the shots looks like Lopez and picks are not enough

You think they haven't offered that yet??
I don’t buy it.

"Your 2010-2011 New Jersey Nets - It Is What It Is"
No I don't
the Lakers are not the Nets. They are not desperate. Two big men for one?? If Kobe was unhappy with Odom leaving for nothing now their front line is weak with an old pack court.
Even if they make it out the west Lebron and them will kill them.
Kobe said during his exit interview they didn’t need Dwight. The Lakers are not desperate where the magic say jump and they say how high

same here i agree. they would have been better off with cp3.
by avilanets85 on Dec 15, 2011 10:22 PM EST up reply actions
Dont understand why they would rather have Pau and Bynum with long deals too
by RandyOreens on Dec 15, 2011 10:20 PM EST up reply actions
they are not rebuilding
they want to remain competitive. What looks better? A championships front line or a center who you hope will reach his potential and a bunch of so so draft picks?

thats just denial that they dont want to rebuild
by RandyOreens on Dec 15, 2011 10:26 PM EST up reply actions
they aren't looking to
you don’t make the decisions Otis has and think rebuilding pieces will interest him. He wants to put a competitive team together

sign AK for 3 years and Hump for 1 year.
if we are 18-19 under the cap…
how much cap do we need for dwight?
say…give hump 8 million (8 b/c on year deal and he’s a trade option)
and ak 7 million (3 years,21 preferred but 4 years, 28 ok)
then we still have 3-4 free and can trade hump’s 8 – making 11-12 free and give up brook. also prevents them from throwing turkoglu on us. which could be good or bad.

LOL d-will is the man
Good for the Orlando center, who apparently believes that life with an aging Kobe Bryant — and without an aging Phil Jackson — might not be all it’s cut out to be. Who needs glitz and glamour and all that fun in the sun when you can own Brooklyn with the all-seeing likes of Williams, who spent part of Thursday’s practice flagging teammate Anthony Morrow for excessive movement on what became a wayward pass?
“I can see you on the floor wherever you are,” Williams told Morrow. “Don’t move. I’ll get the ball to you. Just worry about spotting up.”

this is a great article
This time around, King is older, wiser, and secure enough in his front-office skin to cop to his own mistakes. “I didn’t want to go out and just spend a bunch of money,” he said of recent conservative choices in free agency, “because if it doesn’t work, that’s your roster. I’ve done that in the past.”

Nets 2011-12 Season Wishlist
1. Get Dwight Howard
2. Make the playoffs
Or if 1. doesn’t work out during the season : Hope Andrew Bynum gets another knee injury.
YOu dont have to Hope, most likely it will happen
