Around SBN: Roy Nelson Willing to Pay for His Next Opponent's Drug Test

Doing The Nets' Roster Math

New Jersey Nets

As of Thursday evening, the Nets have 11 players with guaranteed deals that extend beyond Christmas. That doesn't include Stephen Graham who the Nets have to make a decision within the next 10 days or their two top free agent targets, Andrei Kirilenko and Kris Humphries. It does include Shelden and Shawne Williams.

And they are still $18 to $19 million under the salary cap. With the waiving of Travis Outlaw, there is only one Net with a contract that will pay more than $4 million this season: Deron Williams and only one who's owed $10 million over the course of their contracts: again, D-Will. So, as John Schuhmann writes, "they could give Kirilenko a pretty lucrative one-year deal."

1 year 11 million…i think he’d have to take that

by BenJ16 on Dec 15, 2011 7:22 PM EST reply actions

Why do it if you don't have to?

It’s more valuable to have cap room than a large expiring.

by head_hunter on Dec 15, 2011 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

with the new rules your allowed to take 150% of salaries back

so no matter what if we traded AK we can take back 18 mil why not at least have a player that can contribute. Plus if we use any other contracts that increases to more then the cap we would have available

by ncquake24 on Dec 15, 2011 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

No you have to

The Nets need veterans and have to hit the salary floor. I’d rather spend it on AK47 than anyone else out there right now.

If we have no interest in anyone else besides AK & Hump...

then (Cap Room – Hump Cap Hold) seems reasonable to offer to AK…then we can sign Hump to anything we want and go over to do so

I'm betting they are close to having some deals in place with Hump and/or AK

I would not doubt that there will be ONE last ditch effort for Dwight, given his comments today, his attitude, and some pushing by Fegan.

If you read the comments on the Sentinel, people want him out of there. Calling him names, wishing him ill will, ready to boo him.

I think Billy might make another phone call, and after that, we’ll talk again in March.

He’s comfortable playing overseas right now. Hump on the other hand is only making tabloid headlines. The preseason is almost here, and we haven’t heard of a single suitor or potential offer. He’s obviously asking for way too much, and I’m sure many teams don’t want to deal with the circus surrounding him right now.

If we sign AK to a large 1-year expiring contract

and then we trade him, say, to Orlando, do we get a large trade exception in return? How does a team acquire these sorts of large trade exceptions?

2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said
2011-2012 = make the playoffs without hindering future flexibility
2012 off-season = sign the second All-Star
2012-2013 = make a run for the championship

by BigTom on Dec 15, 2011 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

this is what i could find
Traded Player Exception: If a team trades away a player with a higher salary than the player they acquire in return (we’ll call this initial deal “Trade #1”), they receive what is called a Traded Player Exception, also known colloquially as a “Trade Exception”. Teams with a trade exception have up to a year in which they can acquire more salary in other trades (Trade #2, #3, etc.) than they send away, as long as the gulf in salaries for Trade #2, #3, etc. are less than or equal to the difference in salary for Trade #1. This exception is particularly useful when teams trade draft picks straight-up for a player; since draft picks have no salary value, often the only way to get salaries to match is to use a trade exception, which allows trades to be made despite unbalanced salaries. It is also useful to compensate teams for losing free agents as they can do a sign and trade of that free agent to acquire a trade exception that can be used later. Note this exception is for single player trades only, though additional cash and draft picks can be part of the trade.

Call Utah for a Petro for Okur swap

Okur’s now dispensable for Utah with Jefferson/Kanter and Millsap/Favors.

Petro’s tragic but his smaller contract will save Utah around 5 mil in total.

Okur would be a nice back-up to Brook, maybe even allow Brook to slide to PF in some situations if they’re together. A big man shooter, not known for defense but a decent rebounder.

The cap hit though would be 10.9 less 3.2, so 7.7 but he’s a tradable expiring. Only after we get Hump and AK; preferably we’re also able to dump Farmar for cap space.

by stenpoint on Dec 15, 2011 7:42 PM EST reply actions

expiring contract as pointed out

tradable this year, gone next year, unlike Petro.

Okur was hurt most of last year, the only season he didn’t play 72-82 games, so it’s baseles to say he “didn’t play in 3 years”. Seemed healthy in Turkey. He’ll be a better back-up than Petro and a more tradable/useful expiring contract.

PF/C:
Hump, Shelden
Lopez, Okur

And with Morrow, Williams the Shawne one, and Okur, we’d have shooters of all sizes!

by mb4th on Dec 15, 2011 7:44 PM EST via mobile reply actions

To make a difference with Dwight Howard we need another big man...

In Orlando, Dwight only has shooters around him, and their game become addicted to that. They only play inside to Dwight, and the rest of their game is raining 3’s all night because Dwight demands double and triple teams, they make little mid range shots, so their game become predictable.
A team with Dwight and another nice big man that can play some good offense is unbeateable.
Dwight and Lopez together would be amazing, alongside DWill, we just needed to add defenders and shooters

DWill all the way to the Finals!! some day, very close...

If he gets traded to the Lakers in March, is it a foregone conclusion he re-signs in the off season? If he plays out the year there and just doesn’t seem to get along with Kobe, maybe theres a chance he doesnt stay.

MAN!!!

I just got done explaining to my wife this crazy conspiracy theory. I told her that I think the trade was a done deal but it wasn’t Orl ownership that nixed it but the league privately asked all 3 teams to hold off until the CP3 dust settles. The league looks bad right now. Go read Woj’s piece today about Stern and how that whole CP3 mess developed.

It sounds crazy but part of that whole Portland side of the trade was that they wanted to shed Wallace’s contract before signing Crawford. Now that Crawford is signed, looks like at least that little tidbit of the 3 team trade came to fruition.

Just yesterday we find out that D12 was telling teammates he was ‘OUT’…on his way to the Garden State!!!! From reports we read throughout Wednesday ,we all automatically make the presumption that Otis agreed but never brought it to ownership for approval. But i wonder though…wouldn’t a GMz agreement mean he already got the “go ahead” from ownership? With DWill, we all read how that trade developed…the call was about other players then the discussion eventually became DWill. Billy and Utah’s GM found the pieces…Utah GM went to ownership and got the ok and only then did Billy and Utah have the agreement. See where I’m going with this? There’s a chance IMO that the D12 “agreed upon” trade was absolutely “agreed upon” by all parties, even by Orl ownership.

The league would not have looked good to see two super stars move to their choice of destination. CP3 may not be a Laker or Knick…or Net ;-)…but he’s in a big market with a pretty darn good team now. So ummm, he got what he wanted. Then throw in a Dwight trade to his choice(Nets!!!!) in the same week? I’m telling you, this would not look good at all for the NBA.

I don’t think it’s farfetched to think that the NBA asked for this trade to be put on hold. Wishful thinking? I don’t wish for silly things…but I think my idea has some merit to it.

don’t get me wrong, i do think without a doubt that Brook Lopez is the better player. But, if you factor in the fact that he’s a better rebounder, defender and more efficient scorer, he’s pretty much what most teams would want in a center. Lopez however, has one of the most unstoppable offensive arsenals in the game, good free throw shooting and is very durable. I’ll take his pros over Bynum’s (not so hard to find) pros any day.

by Rass on Dec 15, 2011 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

Look...

…if Bynum could stay healthy, he can be nasty. “But if my aunt had a beard, she’d be my uncle”(thanks Mike Kay for that one!).

Odd…if I had to choose between BLo and Bynum if they were on the draft board…be hard to pass up Bynum just from a physical standpoint. Luckily, we’ve gotten to see what they both can do at this point in their careers and Lopez looks like he can be special in his own right.

Yes you can

Player contracts can be renegotiated downward in extensions, as long as the player’s salary does not decrease by more than 40 percent. Previously, renegotiations could only increase a player’s salary. This could provide another key avenue for teams to maintain roster flexibility and add players with space created by restructuring existing contracts, similar to the NFL.

I think that was misinterpreted

Coon had a tweet the other day stating that he thinks that the language in the official CBA document makes it sound like you’re only permitted to have lower annual salaries in the extended years. For example if a player is in the final year of his contract earning $10mil, he can sign a 2 year extension for $6mil per season.

Here's my roster by the end of the year(Dec 31)

PF-Hump

I know this

But what you apparently don’t know is that Orlando ownership said Dwight is off the trade block. They can field trades, it doesnt matter because they don’t have any intentions of trading him RIGHT NOW.

Which is why i say he will be traded at the deadline. So….. Come on, bro!

Why do you think BK is signing FA’s now? Because a Dwight trade isn’t happening right now. BK was holding off because he needed the cap for the Dwight trade. That obviously isn’t happening right now or he wouldn’t be signing players till AFTER the trade went down.

So again, unfortunately when Dwight does get traded Marshon will have passed his 30 days after signing so he is free to be traded. I can’t imagine Orlando not wanting him included.

by breaking20 on Dec 15, 2011 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

He's not waiting to sign players because

he needs 12 to play against the Knicks. He has 11 days until the season starts. And I don’t care what ownership says. They’ve said so much moiso since this began that I take nothing they say seriously. Between the tampering charges, then he’s off the block and then Otis says they’re taking offers, they have no idea. If BK can just add some stuff to the deal + Fegan putting the pressure on + Dwight finally speaking up for himself, I think ownership will eventually realize it’s a mess that they’ll want no part of.

Last try @ Dwight

After Dwight still demanding a trade, it’s clear that he wants Magic management to give one more go before the season. He clearly got annoyed and said are you gonna ask me about this every day? This saga will just drag on the whole season…but this Saturday I think is the deadline to trade him before the season, cuz otherwise we have to get Hump and AK

But you can bet the Nets are making one last go at Dwight before March

by davidnets on Dec 15, 2011 9:29 PM EST reply actions

We can play the preseason shorthanded

so the real deadline is the 31st.

reading articles and watching espn videos about Dwight being traded, but they ONLY mention the Lakers. The guy freakin’ requested a trade to the Nets, AND told his teammates on Tuesday that he thought trade “was imminent” to the Nets, yet still no love for the Nets. smh…

He has 4 teams he prefers

Lakers a team that can give the magic what they want and offer blows the Nets away.

Dallas a team that is not in play unless Dwight is not traded. They don’t have the pieces or the players to make a deal work.

Nets the team we keep hearing but can’t put a package that will get the job done. Even though the Owners are calling the shots looks like Lopez and picks are not enough

No I don't

the Lakers are not the Nets. They are not desperate. Two big men for one?? If Kobe was unhappy with Odom leaving for nothing now their front line is weak with an old pack court.

Even if they make it out the west Lebron and them will kill them.

Kobe said during his exit interview they didn’t need Dwight. The Lakers are not desperate where the magic say jump and they say how high

sign AK for 3 years and Hump for 1 year.

if we are 18-19 under the cap…

how much cap do we need for dwight?

say…give hump 8 million (8 b/c on year deal and he’s a trade option)
and ak 7 million (3 years,21 preferred but 4 years, 28 ok)

then we still have 3-4 free and can trade hump’s 8 – making 11-12 free and give up brook. also prevents them from throwing turkoglu on us. which could be good or bad.

LOL d-will is the man
Good for the Orlando center, who apparently believes that life with an aging Kobe Bryant — and without an aging Phil Jackson — might not be all it’s cut out to be. Who needs glitz and glamour and all that fun in the sun when you can own Brooklyn with the all-seeing likes of Williams, who spent part of Thursday’s practice flagging teammate Anthony Morrow for excessive movement on what became a wayward pass?

“I can see you on the floor wherever you are,” Williams told Morrow. “Don’t move. I’ll get the ball to you. Just worry about spotting up.”

This time around, King is older, wiser, and secure enough in his front-office skin to cop to his own mistakes. “I didn’t want to go out and just spend a bunch of money,” he said of recent conservative choices in free agency, “because if it doesn’t work, that’s your roster. I’ve done that in the past.”
