Nets Sign Ime Udoka

Ime Udoka, a 34-year-old small forward who played limited minutes for the Spurs last year before being cut, is the Nets latest signing. Like Shelden Williams, Udoka has agreed to one-year contract. It is non-guaranteed. Udoka has played for both the Trail Blazers, Kings, Knicks and Spurs.

A Nigerian-American, the 6'6" Udoka has played for Team Nigeria in FIBA Africa competition. He couldn't come to camp earlier, because his mother passed away last Wednesday.

both guaranteed?

nets historically when they sign one year deals include a team option on second year.

Nets don't have many roster spots left.

They are obviously still thinking about Howard.

What about Hump? Nets could lock up Hump for less $ by offering him 5 years.

He is a tradeable asset. I doubt Hump would accept a 1 yr. offer.

Yeah I saw that

As long as he can play defense, I am ok with it.

If he can hound Swag and Little King in practice, I am ok with that too. Those guys need some tough practice opponents so they can develop fast.

There is no period, to this debate so little seperates them.

Its a matter of opinion so save your period, thanks. I’ve felt than D Will overtook CP3 or reached the same the year CP3 got injured. If he hadn’t maybe I wouldn’t feel that way but I’d take Deron just for his bigger body on D and makes him more Dynamic to play some 2. I also think he may be a better shooter by a tiny margin and can finish stronger around the rim.

I called it last week when you guys thought Howard was in the bag

First off…Billy King is not a good GM…lets clear the air on that.

Second..they are going to tank the season. That was the plan from day 1. I got killed from you guys when I said that last week, but I’m clearly right.

I’m assuming Deron and Management have a handshake agreement in place that he won’t leave regardless of the record this year. The goal is to get a top 5-10 pick. We will pick up a future star via the deep draft. Then the ultimate goal is to sign Howard in free agency.

We draft a PF in the draft (or a shooting guard) and then trade Lopez for another starter (We don’t need Lopez and Howard, nor could we fit Lopez under the cap once he is up for a new contract).

We should have a very good team in place next year in Brooklyn…but this year is going to be abysmal…we are one injury away (d-will) from being the worst team in the league.

by jbbaum on Dec 15, 2011 12:32 PM EST reply actions

Thanks Mike

I am pretty certain that’s how its going to play out.

I can’t envision how a trade would work at the deadline for Howard since we are now in the process of filling up the cap to reach the cap minimum for the year. I don’t know the numbers…but if we reach the cap minimum, can we still absorb the big contracts from Orlando that they are looking to dump if they change their mind?

If we don’t see Outlaw amnestied before the deadline…there should be no question as to whether we can trade for Howard at the deadline…I’m pretty sure that salary on our cap would kill the trade.

In my opinion, the move to start filling up the cap is a clear showing the Nets are throwing in the towel for the season. I don’t think it’s a bad thing necessarily. We can get a great talent in the 2012 draft (which will be one of the best in years). The best part is…if Howard truly wants to sign with us in the offseason, now we don’t have to give up any assets to get him. I can live with being bad for another year if it means a top talent in the draft and Howard.

Our team moving forward will/could be

Howard
2012 Top Pick
Top quality player in trade for Lopez (we can also package the Houston pick and receive bench help as well)
Morrow or someone else
Williams

Let's analyze your post here :

“First off…Billy King is not a good GM”

>>> Based on what, exactly? He had Otis practically ready to gift-wrap D12 to us until Orlando Ownership(clueless as they are) pulled the plug on that. If that deal went through, you wouldn’t be saying this…AT ALL.

“Second…They are going to tank the season”

>>> Again I ask : Based on what, exactly? You think Deron is going to stand for any sort of Tanking? The Nets are Professionals and will act as such and try to WIN GAMES ‘cause that’s their goal every season.

by BrockRocks on Dec 15, 2011 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Glad Someone Responded

Why is Billy King a terrible GM?

Easy – first off he is a 76ers reject…who was fired and replaced by Ed Stafanski of the Nets.
Ever since he has been here..he has made terrible signings (name me one good signing other than Morrow!)

He gave up way to much in the Deron Williams trade. If Deron Williams doesn’t re sign with us our future is shot…so he essentially went all in on that trade

Next point – “they are going to tank the season”

Yes they are going to tank the season. And no…it won’t be on “purpose” THEY ARE GOING TO TANK THE SEASON BECAUSE THEY STINK! Deron can try all he wants..there is not enough depth or quality around this team to make any sort of run whatsoever!

by jbbaum on Dec 15, 2011 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

Haha dude!

You called me out and then you essentially agree with me haha!

It’s not like I want them to stink BrockRocks..but its reality the team is not capable of competing…especially in the improved eastern conference..we are definitely looking at lottery right now…which like I mentioned in my first post…is not a bad thing…at all

I can sit through one more year of torment…but they better show me something next year with the glamorous new move that we have been hearing about for years…the folks in Brooklyn won’t support this franchise either if they continue down this path of failure

We know we ain’t getting Dwight before the season starts, so BK has to do whatever he can to get to the floor. We can still trade for Dwight by trading these peeps that we just signed for Hedo and Duhon at a later date. That way, the Magic get their expiring contracts, and everythings still cool.

They jus signed telfair and Ronnie Price

not that they are better than Farmar, but they have depth behind nash and would only trade a big for a PG if it is for someone to be Nash’s eventual replacement

by bettacalltyrone on Dec 15, 2011 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

Nothing is definite for Dwight. It could sweeten the deal.

Ship them together! Orlando could easily lock them both up for the rest of their careers if they wanted. People, especially children are fascinated by twins. The idea sells itself in the Disneyworld market. The Lopez twins would garner positive interest and energy in a post-Dwight Orlando.

by Coach Joe on Dec 15, 2011 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

You are correct in saying nothing is definite, but

Don’t think Fegan and BK won’t ride this out until the end of the month. Fegan will do WHATEVER he has to to try and get Dwight his money. Now, if by the 31st, he’s unsuccessful, then I think this could go on for a while.

we get all excited, spend $ on tickets, get crapped on in free agency again. this crew could go toe to toe with last year’s free agenct signings in a charity game for Newark’s unemployed.

just got my invite for the Nets Chamber of Commerce opening night pregame tho – how exciting that will be!!!

Agreed.

I have been following the Nets since the beginning of the ABA days, people do not underestimate Brooklyn, we will have a good team when we hit Brooklyn. And if Dwight will only sign with Nets, next season we have draft picks, Brook, Dwight and Deron. Lets hope one of our young guys take it to the next level.

Keep the faith.

See theres where I have the problem. We dont know that. One day passed since they said that, and Dwights agent hasnt even had a chance to be pissed of and demand things yet! This was all prior to the CP3 hat dropping as well. So now we lost most of or flexibility over sub par players like these? We could just play our great young rookie Damion James and get the same(if not better) results, AND leave the option open with Orlando.

If the Nets can retain Humphries and add Kirilenko, we will be better for at least having an NBA caliber starting small forward that can score and defend.

This is obviously not a playoff team but I will at least be happy to see the team win more games than they won last year.

Hopefully Kirilenko is a 1 year deal, and the Nets can still find a way to trade for Dwight Howard. If Lopez can step his game up, and Brooks and James impress, the Nets might be able to cobble together a package that approaches what New Orleans got for Paul.

The key hinges on Lopez. Before the 2010-11 season, Lopez and Gordon, both very young, would have been equally valuable pieces since they both play very well at premium positions. If Lopez can rebound the Howard trade is still feasible.

by mytoemytoe on Dec 15, 2011 12:42 PM EST reply actions

I think the Nets could sneak into the playoffs

Wasn’t the 8th seed last year under .500? Or near .500?

If the Nets get AK47, they’re actually a better team than last year. Healthy DWill and Lopez will get the Nets close to .500 at least.

Keep Deron happy.. but build wisely

1) See how Brook, Marshawn, and Damion play.
2) In March, send a HUGE offer sheet to Wilson CHandler. He is a RFA. Make it max $ for this shortened season. After which, he is a UFA.
3) If needed, use cap space to sign Kenyon MArtin for the remainder of the season

The best free agency class coming up is 2013… build carefully and wisely.. DONT MAKE MISTAKES.. and it can all work out

Nets Prediction for this year if Orlando doesnt trade Howard

C | B Lopez – 20 PPG 9.2 RPG 1 Blocks 80% FT at Center

- Meet the 2011 Allstar Center for the East (If Howard is a Laker of Course). D Will will be determinded to get him stats to raise his value for possible March Howard trade. Plus he is in a contract year. Motivation abound.

PF | Hump – 12 PPG / 12 RPG / 1 Block

-Who has more to prove that last year wasnt a fluke. Getting Kim was a fluke. Getting 10 Boards was Much Much easier.

SF | AK47 – 12 PPG / 6 RPG / 1.5 Blocks / 3 APG

-Has the Most experience playing with D Will. Good Defensive SF with the size to guard Melo. Lopez/Hump/AK Makes a decent matchup vs Knicks. Good player all around with underated passing skills and can hit a 3. Can play PF and play it well.

SG | Morrow – 15 PPG / 44% 3PTS

- What has 2 Thumbs and is automatic from downtown, THIS GUY<=.2nd most accurate 3 pt shooter in NBA History. FACT. D Will is going to get alot of corner 3 assits from Morrow

PG | D Will 21 PPG / 12 APG / 46% FG / 84% FT

- Out to prove he is the BEST PG. Hasnt been healthy in 2 years. In game shape and just dropped 50 in a game last week. He knows he has to Play on KOBE level. Lucky for us he has the talent to do so. One of the FEW differnce makers in the NBA and unlike most of the other franchise players, he makes everyone on the court play better.

6th man – M Brooks 16 PPG / 44% FG / 1.5 Steals

- I have been singing his praise since predraft. He is the real deal. Best scorer in college basketball not named Jimmer. People know he can score, 24.6 PPG but did you know that he also pulled 7 RPG, 1.5 Stl 1.2 Blocks…….. in the Big East. He is has the talent to be a great defender especially with Avery’s defensive mind. Made himself into a good player, you have to respect that. Dont be surprised to se him play alot of minutes at SF since he has a 7’ 1" Wingspan. We are going to get alot of fastbreaks with this guy playing the passing lanes. Remeber how good our fastbreak was when we had Kidd and Kittles. DWill and Brooks is just as good……..He is only one year younger then Brook. He is ready to contribute now. He will be neck and neck with Kemba for ROY.

Lopez | Petro | Sheldon
Hump | AK | Sheldon
AK | Shawne | James
Morrow | Brooks | Farmar
D Will | Farmar | Gaines

IF we dont get Howard then plan B is K Mart and Chandler when they get back from China. Seems like Denver is moving on from Chandler. We can save some cash for Howard trade knowing that we will have more money then Denver to bid on him. He would be a nice platoon with AK. K Mart back in NJ for its last year is only fitting, Brooklyn was the reason we lost him in the 1st place. It would be good karma to open Brooklyn with him on the squad.

PS SORRY GUYS JWILL aint making the team.

They really arent going up

DWill makes people better. Hump was 14 and 14 with DWill. I dont see him sustaining that level but 12/12 sounds realistic

I dont see Lopez scoring much more then he did last year. I do see him rebounding alot better closer to what he did his 1st 2 years

by DWILL-of-the-GODZ on Dec 15, 2011 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

Agree mostly

with Brook, DWill, Morrow, AK, Hump. Brook could go 22-23 even if he becomes the focus of the offense as he should be. All optimistic but almost all achievable.

You’re waaay too high on Marshon though if you think he’ll be a 16ppg rookie. Just making the regular rotation and contributing 6-7 ppg should already be a good start.

by stenpoint on Dec 15, 2011 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

When Marshon blows up you will be surprised, I wont

He played in one of the fastest paced offenses in college last year. We are going to be more of a running team with him. He will turn the ball over alot since he is a rook tho but that part of a young players development

Just as a reminder, if Nets are looking to sign Hump to 1 year contract ....

then they just need to maintain a 6.08 million cap hold.

Then Nets could go over the cap by any amount because they own his Bird Rights.

For say 12 million, I could definitely see Hump agreeing to a 1 yr contract, if that is what BK is up to.

by jerry25 on Dec 15, 2011 12:55 PM EST reply actions

Nets would have to Amnesty Outlaw and sign AK47 first.

It is possible that around 12-13 Million for 1 year would make AK a Nets player.

Then Hump’s signing would put them over the cap.

by jerry25 on Dec 15, 2011 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

Jerry if we go over the cap, we only take back 125% of salary in a Dwight deal

Under cap means we can take back 150%.

Still, we may currently have about 18 million in cap space between Hump and AK.

Any team that gets Lopez should want Hump thrown in too, so maybe a multiyear deal is possible for Hump.

by jerry25 on Dec 15, 2011 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

Incorrect

Under the cap you can use your cap space to take back as much extra salary as you can.

Over the cap, but under the tax = 150%

Over the tax threshold = 125%

by TheNetsFan on Dec 15, 2011 1:24 PM EST up reply actions

At this point we need a decent starting PF though

Like Humphries or maybe if AK can play there. The problem with getting Humphries is that it will kinda take away from Lopez’s trade value. You know the way he rebounds the ball, Lopez will have low numbers again.

by DarkXaero on Dec 15, 2011 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

it would help if avery stops playing him at the top of the key or near the 3 point line

i mean how many games last season did we see lopez hanging around the top of the key and shooting 17-18 foot jumpshots. he needs to be down the post more.

the other issues is if we’re running and gunning more this year it will change lopez’s game dynamically, typically lopez needs a half court offense to set him up.

Just cause we signed these guys doesn’t mean we’re not getting Dwight. Its a condensed schedule where u play back-back-back games. We have to keep Deron and Brook healthy throughout. Brook healthy for when he gets traded. With a decent squad we can stay competitive @ .500 or betta till Dwight comes in. I think we’ll have a few upsets cause we’re still under the radar without DH. Its up and down with most u guys. I have barely flinched with these reports. I’m still @ 99.9% that we will have SUPERMAN in uniform.

The Thing is

We dont know if LA is really in the loop.

There was a link where that was a quote of a rumor that said that Magic FO might be worried about Bynum’s knee issues.

So are the lakers really an option. Does Dwight really want to go to the Lakers? or is that all BS to raise the stakes?

All these BSPN reporters claim that Dwight wants to be a Laker or is it just that he wants to be in movie and TV. of course when add the history, SHAQ, Magic and Lakers connection and Dwight want the same thing then the logical place for Dwight would be LA. But I work in Manhattan, every corner downtown there is a show, a movie or some amateur Youtube shows filming stuff and blocking sidewalks. Ignorance by these so called NBA connoisseurs is unbelievable.

and the other aspect we may have going for us (not sure how much it’ll help) i’m hoping that magic doesn’t want to send dwight to LA to lose out like they did with Shaq. I’m not trying to argue that acquiring Deron wasn’t worth it, just that he doesn’t have some magical ability to make the good free agents want to come here (Butler, Chandler, etc.). They have to see a good team before they are willing to sign the dotted line.

Obviously, Howard would go a long way, all 100 yards down the field.

My goodness

People on this board are sounding like a bunch of Outlawing children today. These are decent to good signings until proven otherwise. These are depth players on minimum to two year salaries. The end game is D12, point blank. These signings do not hinder that in the grand scheme of things. We still need to add talent at the 3 and 4, but we also still have cap space, draft picks, time and a few assets to get it done. Yes everyone wants to see a championship squad from day 1, but unfortunately it’s not happening. Let the front office do what they have to do, while remaining flexible to either trade or sign D12 next year. Can it all blow up and Dwill leaves? Absolutely, but at the end of the day thats life. Outlawing and complaining isn’t gonna change that. Sit back, watch the Nets, wait for Dwight or go jump on the Knicks/Lakers/Heat and Outlaw yourself… Have a nice day

Big Picture is not the only picture

Stay in the hunt for Howard and not get him? Keep being the bridesmaid but never the bride? This is a risky strategy b/c Howard has said Nets and Lakers and Mav’s. If he just said Nets, great strategy or if DWill were signed long term, great strategy, but this risks it all and all the Lakers have to do is outbid us even a little. King needs to diversify his strategy and find some players. I doubt AK47 is signing a one year deal as he will have other suitors and the same may be said for Hump.

Why won't Dwill

Do what Paul is doing for Clips and pick up his option for next season so we at least get a couple season from him? It would really hurt the team if they lose him this summer and gave up all those assets for what amount to less then a full season

CP3 can't make more if he opts out as well?

But there’s a line when it comes to commitment towards your team and commitment towards getting paid. CP3 agreed not to opt out, Williams had made up his mind that he will and he does not guaranteed the Nets he will re-sign with us.

by Shameer1016 on Dec 15, 2011 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

Clippers wouldn’t have done the deal without CP3 opting in. Clippers don’t do the deal, where is he going to go? Stern wasn’t going to let him go to LAL and Paul likely would have had to stick around in New Orleans, lose his bird rights, and sign somewhere else at a much lower price. By opting into that deal, he’ll be able to get more money, just he’ll have to wait another year for it.

So let me get this straight

he can’t opt out next season and re-sign with the Clippers for more money, even if the Clippers agreed with it? Because the topic here is commitment.

lets be realistic here, brook will average like 17/5 which is still pretty good, but he isn’t the best defensively against guys like amare or tyson, we need a BIG Center which someone like Howard can provide

by Jron on Dec 15, 2011 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

I fully agree that Lopez is undervalued.

But getting D12 is not overrated at all. Somebody said before that its a superstar driven league. This ain’t just about wins. Dwight and his brand legitimizes Brooklyn and the new Barclays Center. Not only does he add wins, he alongside Deron Williams brings about a culture change to the organization. We can finally be among the “big boys” and I think you are seriously underestimating how important that is in terms of financial opportunity and marketing, attracting other players (look at the lakers and bulls!) and bringing in and widening the fanbase.

Luck plays a part

but OKC has done great by just letting players play and produce. But if you can make it to the NBA, you must have some sort of talent or ability or do something well on the court. The Thunder just assembled the right pieces to form a GOOD TEAM, and not go out on a trading spree or tanking spree.

Zing!!

DPOY, yet he’s gone down the ladder every year in the playoffs. He’s not a great offensive Center, and is only one player, so unless he can guard 2-3 people at once, its a bit overwhelming. . I would say he’s overrated, but over valued might be right. Its real easy to look good on a bad team, especially for C to look so great since its a thin pool of talented C.

I really think the key lies with Damion James

If we compare the Paul trade, Brook is equivalent to Gordon, our TE would be the same as Kaman (actually a little better), we have the draft picks, and the added bonus of taking on Turk (in case you wanna say Howard is more valuable than Paul).

The key is that 2nd young player. Like Aminu. If James can play at a high level, and show that he is a good young prospect.. I think we got a deal.

I say start him, and let him play through his mistakes. We have the advantage of Dwill being his PG, and Outaw being his back up (as of now). Both those factors have the capability of making him look better than he really is.

by KingofDenial on Dec 15, 2011 1:45 PM EST reply actions

just on ND for the first time today and I cant believe the amount of people jumping off the cliff already

Udoka and the Williams brothers (not really) are low risk-low reward signings people need to stop flipping out about them. Theres a chance we will add Hump and AK by the end of the day and then all of a sudden our roster looks pretty solid and theres always the chance of a Dwight trade mid-season. This team is going to improve significantly from last year simply from a full year of a healthy DWill and a likely improved Lopez. Lets actually allow everything to take shape and see some game action before we start saying this team sucks.

D Will had a bad wrist

Lopez had mono and lost a ton of muscle

Morrow was hurt for most of the year

Hump was an unknown commodity until the end of the year when he started getting big minutes

D James was hurt most of the season

Gaines played real well before he was injured

Anybody is an improvement over Outlaw. AK would be huge upgrade

Marshon has a ton of potential

Shawne Williams should help improve our depth

I dont see why we wont be at least a 6th seed if not 5th

Mia – 2nd year together and good glue guy in Battier
Chi – Hamilton fills on of the few holes they had
Bos – Getting old but hard to count out thier talent
Atl – Losing Crawford hurts but still a solid team
NY – Yeah Chandler, Stat, Melo is good Fields and Bibby not so much
NJ – Allstars at PG and Center. Hump and Ak will be solid contrbutors

the team has deron brook and morrow thats better then most of the team competing for the 6 7 or 8 seed in the east where you can make the playoffs with a bellow .500 record

I disagree

D-Willz is a great PG, but he’s no one to take over he game like the great SG’s and SF’s in the league and throughout history. This team isn’t a playoff team as is, and everything fans bring up here is based on potential. In the end, no matter how godo they look on paper, you must go out there on the court and PROVE that you are that good. Nets have failed every time period, no excuse is needed or should be used. If I’m wrong I’m wrong, if I’m right, I’m right, but I’ll wait til the end of the season to see if I really am a pessimistic person.

The Magic’s decision came Wednesday after the Nets assembled a multiteam trade proposal for Howard that would have sent the Magic center Brook Lopez, Portland Trail Blazers forward Gerald Wallace, point guard Jordan Farmar and a first-round draft pick. The Nets also would have taken on Chris Duhon and Hedo Turkoglu. The Blazers would have received four draft picks for Wallace.

With the framework of a deal in place, talks had reached the ownership level in Orlando, league sources said. Nevertheless, Magic ownership did not approve of the trade, and general manager Otis Smith then informed teams Howard had been removed from the market.

At the end of the day, Travis Outlaw was a TERRIBLE fit in New Jersey. He’s definitely not a great player but there were a lot of fans in Portland who appreciated what he did for their team.. maybe some team takes a chance on Travis
