Shawne Williams Chooses Nets Over Knicks, Gets $6.1 Million Over Two

The Nets have added another free agent, and it's another Williams. Shawne Williams has chosen to sign with New Jersey, rather than returning to the Knicks.

For Williams, it's actually a return to the Nets. Dallas traded Eduardo Najera for Kris Humphries and Williams in 2009, but the Nets cut him in 72 hours.

Howard Beck tweets that Williams signed for $6.1 million over two, $2 million more than the Knicks were offering. The second year is reportedly a player option. The Knicks were offering a team option in the second year. Williams was reportedly upset that they put Jamal Crawford ahead of him on their wish list.

Shawne Williams signing brings to four the number of Williams on the Nets roster, joining former Knick teammate Shelden, Jordan and of course, Deron Williams.

Adrian Wojnarowski tweets that the Nets are now "trying to close deal with free agent Andrei Kirilenko."

Welcome back

I’ll assume he’ll replace Graham for all intents and purposes.

2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said
2011-2012 = make the playoffs without hindering future flexibility
2012 off-season = sign the second All-Star
2012-2013 = make a run for the championship

Mission accomplished thus far.

No confirmed contract details yet, but 1 year 3-4 mil makes most sense for both sides. Knicks were offering him 2.5 per year for 2 years so if the Nets want him on a 1 year deal, we had to be offering more than that.

End guy on the bench in case of injuries, poor play, etc. He can do almost nothing offensively (although anyone can cut to the basket when you have Deron) but he is a marginal defender.

I think the reason is...

This offseason isn’t very good… Free Agent wise. So when we strike out on “Big Targets,” it’s really only Chandler and Nene.

Dwight is not a FA so we didn’t lose him per se

+ MarShon

+ Shawne and Sheldon. Those are little improvements and we still have major flexibility. Just what I have been advocating the Nets do all along. Now we just need Lopez to play well and for the team to overachieve and our assets may look better to Orlando ownership.

Usefull role player

by ToddMacCulloch11 on Dec 15, 2011 11:49 AM EST reply actions

Can someone clarify the nature of these "1 year deals"?

I was under the impression that the end of the 1 year deals left a player trade discretion.

Are we signing 1 years, or did SWill get a 2 year with a 1 year guaranteed and a team option in year 2?

Side note: Are we the Number 1 employer of Williams’ in NBA history? If not, who is?

Jet Black Ninja

8 > 3

by NJNM on Dec 15, 2011 11:53 AM EST up reply actions

it's why Lakers will offer both Bynum and Gasol

they have no choice now. The lost the CP3 battle to their little sister. If Dwight goes to NJ, Kobe will be demanding a trade, maybe not this year, but you bet in the off-season he will. Lakers know this, so they’ll throw the whole roster at Orlando and try to find other teams to join in. If Orlando doesn’t want Pau, and Rockets still do, how’s this:

Lakers get Dwight, Hedo, Scola
Magic get Bynum, Kevin Martin and picks
Houston gets Pau, Duhon

There is nothing Nets can do that can beat that.

by domininaldo1981 on Dec 15, 2011 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt Houston gets back involved….they were also looking to clear alittle cap so they could sign Nene…

I think Bynum to Atlanta, Gasol to Golden State, Josh Smith and Monta Ellis to Orlando, Howard and Turk to the Lakers….is the best possible scenario for all involved

by Chris3035 on Dec 15, 2011 12:27 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Orlando finally got it through their thick skulls that Bynum is a fragile waste.

According to a Magic beat writer the other day, “They just learned his knees aren’t very healthy.”. So if I was Otis and LA offered me Bynum and Kevin Martin, I would file tampering charges against LA for tampering with my precious time.

a lot of sense.

Dwight’s agent has told Nets he wants to be in BK. Magic is playing hardball.

I just hope when March comes around we lowball them too. They dont want lopez now we dont give him then. Draft picks and expiring and maybe a third team. Keep Turk.

No deal. Oh Well. Sorry Not our fault Dwight. Think about it. Melo forced his way to Knicks and Knicks gutted team. If you come here, we will have all the right role players for you but you will make less.

anyone not named deron is out of here in favor of Dwight

it is what it is Sign 1 year deals, make the deal at the deadline. It stinks, and it will cause a lot of anxiety, but the Nets have staked their claim.

No turning back from here folks, we know that if Dwight isn’t a Net by March, we’re going to be rebuilding for the foreseeable future and guess what? We’re probably good enough to land in 9th place, maybe 8th. So if we miss out on Howard we probably won’t get a decent lottery pick.

for a mid-tier FA like Kirilenko. As long as it’s not too big, so it won’t eat too much into next year’s cap space and also still tradable if it came to that.

Hollinger on Shawne
+ Long, slender forward who likes to take 3-pointers from corner. Limited handle.

+ Plays well as smallball 4. Can defend taller players, but lacks strength.

+ Rarely draws fouls or attacks rim. Character a question. Improved focus.

Rescued from purgatory by the Knicks after flaming out in Indiana and Dallas — as much because of what he did off the court as on it — Williams was recast as a smallball 4 and did a solid job for the ‘Bockers’ second unit. The surprise was how well he could defend the position — though he gave up inches, his length allowed him to contest taller players’ shots. As long as he wasn’t involved in a strength matchup he held his own; in fact one could argue he defended the 4 better than the 3, where quicker players could prey on his fairly average mobility.

Offensively, Williams was a Johnny One-Note who took 55 percent of his shots from beyond the 3-point arc — the fourth-highest rate among power forwards. On a similar note, he had the fourth-lowest free-throw rate at the position. His rebounding was also subpar for the position, although darned good for a small forward.

He made those 3s though, hitting 40.1 percent while being a threatening floor-spacer to pull opposing bigs away from the basket. So even though he was an infrequent shooter he was a helpful offensive player. I’m suspicious as to whether he can keep shooting at that high of a clip, and it will be tough for him to hang on to a rotation spot if the shot goes awry. But for last season, at least, he was a very useful role player.

You and I generally agree....

But, honestly- I think ORL ownership is beyond impossible. Its nice we’re keeping flexibility just in case. But I really think they could care less.

To be clear- I think its over for now. I think ORL drags this out for a good long while.
