Shawne Williams Chooses Nets Over Knicks, Gets $6.1 Million Over Two
The Nets have added another free agent, and it's another Williams. Shawne Williams has chosen to sign with New Jersey, rather than returning to the Knicks.
For Williams, it's actually a return to the Nets. Dallas traded Eduardo Najera for Kris Humphries and Williams in 2009, but the Nets cut him in 72 hours.
Howard Beck tweets that Williams signed for $6.1 million over two, $2 million more than the Knicks were offering. The second year is reportedly a player option. The Knicks were offering a team option in the second year. Williams was reportedly upset that they put Jamal Crawford ahead of him on their wish list.
Shawne Williams signing brings to four the number of Williams on the Nets roster, joining former Knick teammate Shelden, Jordan and of course, Deron Williams.
Adrian Wojnarowski tweets that the Nets are now "trying to close deal with free agent Andrei Kirilenko."
- Nets reportedly agree to terms with Shawne Williams - Colin Stephenson - Star-Ledger
- Shawne Williams passes on re-signing with Knicks, will join Nets - Frank Isola - Knicks Knation
- Shawne chooses Nets over Knicks - Marc Berman - New York Post
- Shawne Williams picks Nets; Outlaw done - Mike Mazzeo - ESPN New York
- Shawne Williams Will Be a Net - Seth Rosenthal - New York Magazine
- NETS Sign Shawne Williams - New Jersey Nets

Welcome back
I’ll assume he’ll replace Graham for all intents and purposes.
2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said
2011-2012 = make the playoffs without hindering future flexibility
2012 off-season = sign the second All-Star
2012-2013 = make a run for the championship
Mission accomplished thus far.

No confirmed contract details yet, but 1 year 3-4 mil makes most sense for both sides. Knicks were offering him 2.5 per year for 2 years so if the Nets want him on a 1 year deal, we had to be offering more than that.

hehe, my opinion
If it’s a 1-year deal, then great. If it’s more than 1-year, then terrible.

Expect more of that I'm guessing
We need to put a team of decent players out there and pay them enough to only take 1 year.

People don’t realize you can do a lot worse than Graham as your 15th man. His contract makes him a potential throw in for a trade still, and theres really no reason to cut him unless we need that roster spot for someone else.

Yup, agreed
End guy on the bench in case of injuries, poor play, etc. He can do almost nothing offensively (although anyone can cut to the basket when you have Deron) but he is a marginal defender.

Obvious the Nets are not looking to win this year...
They are patching a “cheap” team together and waiting for Howard…
Oh well…
We all know Deron has major input into the team's moves
He was likely on board with waiting for Dwight and he should not bolt if this roster is the result of his decisions.
Can we just amnesty Outlaw right now?

Are we signing 1 years, or did SWill get a 2 year with a 1 year guaranteed and a team option in year 2?
Side note: Are we the Number 1 employer of Williams’ in NBA history? If not, who is?

For outside free agents like the Williamses or AK47, that doesn’t apply. It would apply to Hump though.

Jet Black Ninja

it's why Lakers will offer both Bynum and Gasol
they have no choice now. The lost the CP3 battle to their little sister. If Dwight goes to NJ, Kobe will be demanding a trade, maybe not this year, but you bet in the off-season he will. Lakers know this, so they’ll throw the whole roster at Orlando and try to find other teams to join in. If Orlando doesn’t want Pau, and Rockets still do, how’s this:
Lakers get Dwight, Hedo, Scola
Magic get Bynum, Kevin Martin and picks
Houston gets Pau, Duhon
There is nothing Nets can do that can beat that.

I doubt Houston gets back involved….they were also looking to clear alittle cap so they could sign Nene…
I think Bynum to Atlanta, Gasol to Golden State, Josh Smith and Monta Ellis to Orlando, Howard and Turk to the Lakers….is the best possible scenario for all involved

Orlando finally got it through their thick skulls that Bynum is a fragile waste.
According to a Magic beat writer the other day, “They just learned his knees aren’t very healthy.”. So if I was Otis and LA offered me Bynum and Kevin Martin, I would file tampering charges against LA for tampering with my precious time.

Shawne's mix
never seen him play as I avoid watching the knicks (unless they are playing the nets) . based on his mix looks like his skill set is pretty much catch and shoot with good range but not much else offensively. However we need the depth and certainly gives us better options than the trash we have at SF

it is what it is Sign 1 year deals, make the deal at the deadline. It stinks, and it will cause a lot of anxiety, but the Nets have staked their claim.
No turning back from here folks, we know that if Dwight isn’t a Net by March, we’re going to be rebuilding for the foreseeable future and guess what? We’re probably good enough to land in 9th place, maybe 8th. So if we miss out on Howard we probably won’t get a decent lottery pick.

The Nets can probably afford one multi-year deal
for a mid-tier FA like Kirilenko. As long as it’s not too big, so it won’t eat too much into next year’s cap space and also still tradable if it came to that.
More than that
Would be my guess on a 1 year deal. I’m guessing we’re looking at 12M.

Hump on a 1 year contract is better for the Nets…
Possible Squad:
Starters
D-will
Morrow
James
AK47 (he is slowing down… he would be better at the 4)
Lopez
This starting 5 is better than the Sixers, Pacers and possibly the Hawks
Bench
Farmar
Brooks
Shawne Williams
Sheldon Williams
Petro
That’s not a bad bench…
This team wins 38+ games this year and makes the playoffs…

Hollinger on Shawne
+ Long, slender forward who likes to take 3-pointers from corner. Limited handle.
+ Plays well as smallball 4. Can defend taller players, but lacks strength.
+ Rarely draws fouls or attacks rim. Character a question. Improved focus.
Rescued from purgatory by the Knicks after flaming out in Indiana and Dallas — as much because of what he did off the court as on it — Williams was recast as a smallball 4 and did a solid job for the ‘Bockers’ second unit. The surprise was how well he could defend the position — though he gave up inches, his length allowed him to contest taller players’ shots. As long as he wasn’t involved in a strength matchup he held his own; in fact one could argue he defended the 4 better than the 3, where quicker players could prey on his fairly average mobility.
Offensively, Williams was a Johnny One-Note who took 55 percent of his shots from beyond the 3-point arc — the fourth-highest rate among power forwards. On a similar note, he had the fourth-lowest free-throw rate at the position. His rebounding was also subpar for the position, although darned good for a small forward.
He made those 3s though, hitting 40.1 percent while being a threatening floor-spacer to pull opposing bigs away from the basket. So even though he was an infrequent shooter he was a helpful offensive player. I’m suspicious as to whether he can keep shooting at that high of a clip, and it will be tough for him to hang on to a rotation spot if the shot goes awry. But for last season, at least, he was a very useful role player.

Hmm
A full year of Deron with a healthy wrist, add in a healthy and improved Lopez. The new Williams, AK. Hump and a healthy D James. That team could hover around 8 seed in the east.

We haven't signed Hump or AK yet...

No just looking at what he can do, perhaps

LOTS of 3s coming our way this season... interesting.
Also looks to be shaping up to be a much faster team up and down the floor- fits well with DWills comments regarding adding more motion

that's no good

If the Nets could make that one year guaranteed with team options for 2nd and 3rd year
It’s a good deal and compromise.

Center is fine with Brook and ehh Petro/ williams
PF/C right now has not starters and do potential decent roleplayers in James and Williams.

Berger
Shawne Williams has agreed to sign with the Nets for the same two-year, $5M that the Knicks offered him, source confirms.
Wow he really did choose us over the Knicks

This is the equivalent of Outlaw going to the Knicks and the Knicks fans saying they owned us. Big deal, they both stink!
"LeBron puts up great numbers, can't close w/o DWade. LeBricked 3 late 3s when shouldve been driving, getting to line. What else new?"
Yet casual basketball fans think he is a God, and would exhaust their entire squads to land him...
Then you haven't seen Shawn Williams play then. Unlike Outlaw, AT LEAST SHAWN CAN SCORE AND PLAY A LITTLE 'D'!!
Outlaw has shown he can basically do NEITHER.
Why 2 years?
He moiso’d us the last time he was a Net. I hope he doesn’t do it again.
well, so not bad at all 2.5M won't make a diference in trading for Dwight in March.
DWill all the way to the Finals!! some day, very close...
I assume the second year is an option.

In the grand scheme of things 2.5 million is very little
We aren’t going to only sign 1 year deals. It just won’t happen haha

What would it take to land Milsap?
Have Kevin O bail out his good buddy again and a package of Milsap and Brook would be a nice package for Dwight.
what a garbage roster this is

Good signing
Don’t see the panic. We’re still in the D-12 sweepstakes
Re-sign Hump or trade for Millsap?
Let’s say Millsap can be had for cap space and a pick. Millsap’s got 2 years left, around 7/yr.
Just said that.
What would it take to land him? He would be a great fit..Better than Hump and he knows Deron.
ill take milsap

I deserve some apologies for being focused on Shawne last night and being called obsessed.
I was just being realistic.
That is who BK was focused on.
This will be a crazily assembled team.....Who knows what's gonna happen....
I’m hoping for the better…..
texts from a knick fan associate:
“u guys got shawn williams? what hap to dwight lol”
“is that the best ur team is gonna do? lol”
“nets r trash bro”
I tell you one thing
…knick fans…what a bunch. If only they can tell you how many rings they’ve won in the past 30 years.
If the Nets are unable to bring in Humph or AK…
Does Sheldon and Shawne split time at the 4?
by Chris3035 on Dec 15, 2011 1:22 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Not a good thought
With JWill and maybe DJames as backups.
Shawne = Backup 3, occasional 4
Sheldon = Backup 4 & 5
JWill = D-League
If a player like this has so much pride
imagine what Humphries and Lopez are really feeling.
Dwight or Bust
Nets lose 33+ games this season.

HUMPH
Based on these William’s signings, I don’t think we are signing THE HUMPH. He is gone.
Now we just have to re-sign Jason, Ray and Buck! Billy King is WILLIAMS CRAZY!
Paul from Sunny Delray Beach, Florida
Why didn't they sign Reggie Williams at that price? Much better player.
DWill is not a GM… He’s not staying because you signed Shawne Williams.
Feh. First the love affair with Caron Butler. Now two years for Williams the lesser.
Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
