Nene Reaches Deal With Nuggets

The Nets' top free agent target is gone. Nene has reached an agreement on a five-year deal worth $67 million with the Denver Nuggets, as first reported by ESPN's Marc Stein.

"Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri met Monday night with Nene and reps, one of three or four meetings the team had with its UFA to close deal," reported Ken Berger. The Nuggets are also making progress on bringing back restricted free agent Arron Afflalo, another player the Nets liked.

Only Denver could have given the free agent big man a fifth year. The Nets had reportedly offered him a four-year deal worth $64 million. Now, the consensus is that they're in Dwight-or-bust mode.

"Obviously a must, post-Nene, for Nets to win DH12 Sweepstakes," Stein tweets. "But I've always liked their chances of crafting right deal better than Lakers."

You're totally right

Really no other options at this point. I wasn’t the highest on Nene, however I thought he would have been a major plus for this organization going forward even if the price tag was a little too high.

So it’s officially Dwight or bust now. May as well pay up Kirilenko’s price tag and amnesty Outlaw too at this point, no other real ways to get better. I was against signing Crawford, but since it looks like he’ll get a one year deal, let’s hop in on that before he chooses Portland or NYK.

If L.A. is pursuing Paul again, and Orlando has high demands for Dwight, we are still in a good spot for Howard.

  3. Now it’s the same thing with Dwight Howard

If necessary, that's my thinking. A large 1-year deal to tide us over until Dwight.

2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said
2011-2012 = make the playoffs without hindering future flexibility
2012 off-season = sign the second All-Star

Mission accomplished thus far.

by BigTom on Dec 13, 2011 10:10 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt it. Will probably be a multi year if that's the route we go.

We could have been close to max while having Nene on the roster if we renounced Brook or S&T’ed him pre-Dwight.

Probably will be a 5 year $40 to $45 mill deal or in that range for the Hump, leaves a lot of cap available.

I still think you’ll see a big trade go down in the next couple days for a wing.

Will be the move that convinces Dwight here and only here, similar to when Boston got Ray Allen and it convinced Garnett.

All this still relies on Otis and the ORL owners.

The timing of it is interesting I guess, but Jordan doesn’t know any more about that FO pursuit of Dwight than we do, and it very well could be unrelated. In fact, would he even want Nene here? Severely limits his chance of earning playing time. Nothing to read into here.

I didn't at first, but it is all too coincidental.

Nene signs back with Denver and we here LA getting back into the Paul talks at the same time. It’s very suspicious.

Gun to my head though, I say Otis is still an idiot and will try to hold Dwight hostage.

I have no idea. No information to go off on. We're all speculating.

But the easiest thing for an NBA GM to do is throw big money at free agents and call it a day. Billy didn’t do that in spite of a widespread perceived notion that he had/has to bring in talent to appease Deron (a meme I never fully bought into). So there has to be something to his refusal to do that. Furthermore, N. I. reported according to his sources inside the Nets that the Nets were not going to wait around for Dwight, yet here we are waiting around for him. Convenient change of plans?

Anyway, wouldn’t Deron be shooting off at the lip on Twitter or something if he were displeased with the way the past week has turned out? Even something discrete like “SMH.” Instead, organization-wide silence.

At the end of the day, who knows? Only Billy, and I give him credit for not leaking.

Its obvious.

Nene was torn between leaving Colorado (where he met and married his wife) and getting a bigger paycheck. He decided that he would stick around for less money. That’s about it.

The hold up was him, not King, not Fegan.

Nene: 14.5 PPG and 7.6 RPG

Honestly...

This is why people shouldn’t get their hopes up. A lot of you act like BK is infallible. All of the nonsense the past few days about interpreting his “silence” as meaning he is successfully scheming is ridiculous. I would be legitimately surprised if we end up getting Howard this season.

I am definitely not giving up hope for next season – and I think there is a significant chance Deron Williams resigns with us…but I just don’t see the Magic moving the guy. They are that delusional and Dwight hasn’t helped by caring what his fans think of him.

As for Nene, yea it sucks. It puts us in a precarious season this season and it means are long-term strategy is built around a lot of high-risk, high-reward type scenarios. That said, I was never super big on a max contract to him anyway – I would hate to end up in the worst case scenario of rebuilding (again), but I think not signing him will turn out for the better over the long run.

I would encourage the following from all of you: You can maintain a positive attitude, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t critically approach these issues.

Ask Detroit if they’re happy overpaying Gordon and Charlie V (add Tayshun Prince now).
Ask Philly if they’re glad they’re paying Brand a good chunk of their cap space.

Obviously a must, post-Nene, for Nets to win DH12 Sweepstakes. But I’ve always liked their chances of crafting right deal better than Lakers

Nets do have a lot of flexibility to give Orlando what they want. However, the urgency has been taken out of this thing. Now Billy can’t exactly say there is a deadline for us taking back Hedo.

Dwight or bust, then if the Magic were not going to trade him by the end of the week, the Nets would move on to Nene. Don't fit well.

Brook can’t guard the perimeter and Dwight’s defensive impact is severely mitigated if you move him outside.

Also don’t think they fit that well offensively. Just not a good combo, in my opinion.

To be fair though, Ryan Anderson was paired with Dwight last year and he worked very well with him.

I guess it was just my assumption from the few times I've seen him play with Dwight.

I mean, yeah.

Ryan Anderson is a pick-n-pop four who has the quickness to guard other fours. He’s more comfortable on the perimeter than Lopez.

Lopez has drifted to the perimeter, but that’s not where he’s really supposed to be (or most effective).

Can't think of anyone.

Maybe a three-team trade for Gay where the Nets get a decent four back as well.

Yo.. lol

So we’re talking about flipping Lopez for a wing if Dwight was coming here via FA?

by vincecarter4pres on Dec 13, 2011 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

Yes.

Presumably, a multi-team trade where the Nets are getting adequate value.

After this season, I don’t feel that a Lopez for Gay swap will be equal. Plus, the Grizzles don’t need a center.

See what you can cook up.

by Dopeness on Dec 14, 2011 12:00 AM EST up reply actions

I had said before, if Dwight is going to make it to FA, there is a good chance we'll trade Brook for a stud on rookie deal through 2012-13 as an 11th hour deal.

To open up more cap and bring in a wing.

Maybe a 3 team deal where we get Paul George and Patrick Patterson.

DeMar DeRozan.

Outside shot of Harden.

Derrick Williams on Minny.

Evan Turner and something else.

by vincecarter4pres on Dec 14, 2011 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

yeah RA shot what 41% from 3 last year?

Brook is not the same mold, RA is a shooter and he’ll make quick drives or pass. Lopez likes to faceup and take his man off the dribble or back them down

also I would love to see RA at the 5 against Brook. remember when Dwight kept getting suspended for technicals and elbows and RA was dropping like 30/20 games as a center?

by nygiants1 on Dec 13, 2011 11:18 PM EST up reply actions

With Nene and Dwight sharing an agent

And a lucrative deal from the Nets on the table, this thing reeks of “Dwight’s coming.”

There is NO WAY Billy & Fegan let Nene take the Denver deal without their approval.

That’s the only logical thing I can think. I doubt we’d just give up or that Fagan would put a gun to our heads and say "choose now because my client won’t wait anymore!!! (even though I’m the one making him wait.) "

Signing him basically says we can’t trade for Dwight till atleast March….I said it up top Nene 14.5 PPG and 7.6 RPG vs Hump 14.8 PPG and 13.5 RPG w D-Will….and he’ll come 3x cheaper.

Nene puts us into a 7th seed?
With Hump we get 8th….
With Dwight…3rd

Nene isn’t that good. Get over it. D-Will said himself that there is no one in this free-agency that can make the Nets a championship caliber team

I still like our chances

Everybody needs to strap in tho, cuz this season is definitely going to be a rollercoast and may even be tough to deal with, in terms of the talent on the court as we stay in position for dwight

the worse we do, the more our draft pick is worth later ;)

also imagine we are mediocre BUT end up with dwight in free agency.
So Deron, Dwight, STILL have Brook, could keep him or trade him in a josh smith package or something and have 2 1st round picks in a good draft, including a not awful one cuz we were mediocre on the court.

that’s a dream scenario

Options out there

There are bigs that are likely available via trade that would come cheap (in terms of assets). They’re not Nene caliber, but they could help. Guys like Okafor, Millsap, Hickson & Speights come to mind. Moiso, maybe we can even pick up an asset in return for taking on a guy like Okafor who would compliment Lopez very well.

Ya'll are ON CRACK if you think Nene is going to take $13.5m/yr

to play for a perrenial 8th seed with no discernible star, leader, or direction while he has a $16m/yr deal on his desk from the Nets (with Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, and the richest owner in the sport)

He would be an idiot to take anything less than $15.5/yr from the Nuggets (hometown discount).

Why? Because his wife is from Denver? Big whoop. I’m sure she won’t have no gripe moving (if necessary) for a few years. It’s not like Denver is going anyway any time soon.

I'm bout to go to sleep

but I have to say this. Seeing what I saw today makes me believe that Dwight will be a Nets. Not only that but he prefers the Nets.

So I was wrong on both accounts.

Now if this was just nene I would have said okay maybe he got tried of waiting and said screw it. Maybe he just wanted to go back home to Denver. Then again he said he wanted to go to a contender and win. He just assured himself he will never see a ring in that uniform. When I heard the Lakers are talking back to get CP3.

That is the act of desperation. Why would anyone go through that. We seen and heard how frustrating the process been. The Lakers dropped out of it because of that and after a couple days they go back? Something changed. Similar to how we heard the Knicks were interested in only short term deals and then it was rumor the Lakers are trying to get CP3 and then the same day the trade goes down. Tyson gets an offer from Golden State to only have it outbid by the Knicks?

Again I was wrong. Everything I seen today points to Dwight being a Net

Didnt expect this team to win 12 games

Devin Harris – coming off an amazing season, was an all star very clutch
Courtney Lee- great defender starting 2 on finals team
Terence Williams- Promising young rookie
Yi- coming off a bad season but he was already bad
Lopez- coming off a great rookie campaign

might not happen so soon

but it looks like the Nets are going the Miami route and are going to get a bunch of 1 year deals, and trade Farmar and Petro (might be the reason why Nets got Sheldon). Maybe get an Antawn Jamison, find someone to take Farmar, Maybe a Petro and a second rounder for Thabeet, etc.

What would it matter if the Nets made the playoffs or not before?

I’m hoping they do, but in the event that they do not that doesn’t change the fact Dwight wants to play here.

That Orlando roster is space garbage hitting the atmosphere.

Why do you continually trumpet it as some great roster, if it was they would win and Dwight wouldn’t want to leave.

That team wins 12 to 18 games without Dwight in an 82 game season.

Maybe 20 to 25 with Lopez or Bynum in his place.

Sacramento is an interesting trade partner

They’re way below the salary floor. They have a bunch of young guys with potential, but can’t get it pulled together.

They’re a team I can see involved in a multi-team deal for Dwight. They might be willing to take on guys like Petro, Farmar or even Turk for a price. Would Orlando value a guy like Cousins more than Lopez? I’m sure Sacramento would do Cousins plus for Lopez, if only to unload the headache & add some experience.

by TheNetsFan on Dec 14, 2011 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

They should just trade Farmar and re-sign Uzoh.

Petro will be impossible to move.

Who long should we be willing to wait on Dwight?

Ive been a Nets fan for over 20 years. And I can tell you this,
Magic never wanted to be a Net,
Bird never wanted to be a Net,
Dominique never wanted to be a Net,
MJ never wanted to be a Net,
Shaq never wanted to be a Net,
Kobe never wanted to be a Net,
Duncan never wanted to be a Net,

BUT HOWARD DOES WANT TO BE A NET.

We have had a couple of decent teams since Ive been a fan but we never won anything. We are within reach though and the only thing that will get us over the hump ( pun intended) is A LITTLE PATIENCE. I would be willing to sacrafice the entire season for a chance to have a truely great team.

From a commenter on the the Orlando blog
I think their chances are great
It is pretty apparent Dwight wants to play with Deron, and we will not have the ability to sign him. None of the players on Dwight’s wish list besides Davis are readily attainable with the Magic’s assets. We need a hail mary to get Josh Smith or Iggy, or Dwight to realize this is a good team that can be great with his help.

My biggest consolation was the report that Dwight wanted to recruit Billups to the Magic, you generally don’t want to improve a team if you want to be traded soon after.

But the Nets have been exploring ways to bring in a third or even fourth team that could convey more assets to Orlando, and New Jersey GM Billy King has signaled to associates that such a maneuver won’t be a problem. King has proved to be one of the most adept executives in the league at assembling complicated, multi-team deals.

Billy King has been like a ninja

So many things today point to Dwight being a Net. (hopefully before the season)
Besides the obvious trade request and the Nets being on the top of his list.

The Lakers were going for Dwight again after the trade for CP3 fell through. Now they are back after Paul. It’s obvious they can’t get both. They know they can’t get Dwight.

Nene signs with Nuggets after waiting all this time. Same agent as Dwight. He knew what was going on. Now he signs for an extra year with Nuggs and only getting 3 million more. He could have made that 3 million back and more by getting another contract at age 33. Not to mention putting the extra 3 million a year to work he was getting from NJ.

It’s going to happen. But it could be ugly watching this team if it doesn’t happen soon.

by Rodney Buford on Dec 14, 2011 12:13 AM EST reply actions

It wasn't that I was in love with Nene, but, it would have been nice to have a three big man rotation of Brook, Nene and Hump.

I was saying at the end of last year, that Hump was putting up better numbers than Nene, but, lets see if he can continue that trend.

LETS GO NETS!

Dwight or Bust!

Get Dwight, D-Will resigns and other players want to play in Brooklyn (Brooklyn will be amazing-hardcore fans-been dying for a team since Dodgers left).

Don’t get Dwight and the nets lose D-Will and become completely irrelevant and are a bottom teir team for many, many years to come in a brand new billion dollar arena in Brooklyn.

Pick 1…because it’s simply one or the other. This will either be a huge celebration or a funeral.

With the recent history of the Nets, it seems like they just can’t get right and I’d be shocked if things work out for them. I can tell you about 10 things that didn’t go their way in the past 2 years!
