Nene Reaches Deal With Nuggets
The Nets' top free agent target is gone. Nene has reached an agreement on a five-year deal worth $67 million with the Denver Nuggets, as first reported by ESPN's Marc Stein.
"Nuggets GM Masai Ujiri met Monday night with Nene and reps, one of three or four meetings the team had with its UFA to close deal," reported Ken Berger. The Nuggets are also making progress on bringing back restricted free agent Arron Afflalo, another player the Nets liked.
Only Denver could have given the free agent big man a fifth year. The Nets had reportedly offered him a four-year deal worth $64 million. Now, the consensus is that they're in Dwight-or-bust mode.
"Obviously a must, post-Nene, for Nets to win DH12 Sweepstakes," Stein tweets. "But I've always liked their chances of crafting right deal better than Lakers."

You're totally right
Really no other options at this point. I wasn’t the highest on Nene, however I thought he would have been a major plus for this organization going forward even if the price tag was a little too high.

So it’s officially Dwight or bust now. May as well pay up Kirilenko’s price tag and amnesty Outlaw too at this point, no other real ways to get better. I was against signing Crawford, but since it looks like he’ll get a one year deal, let’s hop in on that before he chooses Portland or NYK.

I really hope
He hasn’t been on a bender this entire time.
Think about it: have we even seen him recently? No. It’s just been a one sentence press release. I write press releases at work all the time. They’re ghostwritten.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME ANYONE HAS SEEN BK?!
it's the higher ups fault imo
- Lebron will sign with the team (yeah right)
- We can get Melo in a trade (Melo nearly crapped his pants when a reporter said he was traded to NJ
- Now it’s the same thing with Dwight Howard
My faith in this franchise is very low right about now.
"I define passion as extreme emotion."
When you have to shoot, shoot don't talk.
If necessary, that's my thinking. A large 1-year deal to tide us over until Dwight.

I doubt it. Will probably be a multi year if that's the route we go.
We could have been close to max while having Nene on the roster if we renounced Brook or S&T’ed him pre-Dwight.
Probably will be a 5 year $40 to $45 mill deal or in that range for the Hump, leaves a lot of cap available.
I still think you’ll see a big trade go down in the next couple days for a wing.
Will be the move that convinces Dwight here and only here, similar to when Boston got Ray Allen and it convinced Garnett.
All this still relies on Otis and the ORL owners.

by vincecarter4pres on Dec 13, 2011 11:25 PM EST up reply actions
That's incorrect
As a player with 9 yrs experience, Nene is eligible for a max salary at 30% of the cap ($58.04 million)
30% X $58 million X 4 = $69.4 million
Yep. We are in for some good news, I think. Whatever it is.

I’d have rather given a monster contract to a good player than watch Dwill/Morrow/Willams/Hump/Lopez.
You guys HAVE to remember
That it is DOUBTFUL Nene truly took less money to play for Denver……we could’ve had him for 15 mil if we wanted him…..this had to be a move approved by D-Will and it means we are close with Dwight or possibly a trade that no one knows about
People are blaming Billy. That's dumb...
He offered Nene money. Nene chose to stay in Denver. What was BK supposed to do? Threaten him?

think about it. he waited this long, and has the same agent as dwight and we obviously couldnt get dwight and nene.
so nene is a nugg, we have dwight
Or ... it could mean that he didn't want to wait anymore.
Either way, it’s good news.
Actually, I am mixed right now.
I really felt confident about acquiring Nene. If Billy did not feel need to go after him so hard, they must feel confident in their ability to land Dwight, no?
Really do not know how to feel right now. Net Income, help?
I think it's fine.
I hope that Hump signs with another team.....
That should teach the Nets a lesson for treating him like Moiso after his great effort last year…..

Dwill does not pull every string in the league.
Reality is, the Magic have been very, very difficult to deal with – and Otis Smith has not done or said anything to convince me he’s going to deal Dwight.

I'm trying to be optimistic right now.
If Nene took $67 over 5 years from Denver when we offered $64 over 4, and the Lakers are all of a sudden back in for CP3, does that mean they gave up on Dwight because we got him?

Fegan represents both D12 and Nene right?
If there was a trade on the table for D12 that was close to happening it would make smart business sense to hold off on Nene signing until that was announced just to up the ante…

I have no idea. No information to go off on. We're all speculating.
But the easiest thing for an NBA GM to do is throw big money at free agents and call it a day. Billy didn’t do that in spite of a widespread perceived notion that he had/has to bring in talent to appease Deron (a meme I never fully bought into). So there has to be something to his refusal to do that. Furthermore, N. I. reported according to his sources inside the Nets that the Nets were not going to wait around for Dwight, yet here we are waiting around for him. Convenient change of plans?
Anyway, wouldn’t Deron be shooting off at the lip on Twitter or something if he were displeased with the way the past week has turned out? Even something discrete like “SMH.” Instead, organization-wide silence.
At the end of the day, who knows? Only Billy, and I give him credit for not leaking.

Honestly...
This is why people shouldn’t get their hopes up. A lot of you act like BK is infallible. All of the nonsense the past few days about interpreting his “silence” as meaning he is successfully scheming is ridiculous. I would be legitimately surprised if we end up getting Howard this season.
I am definitely not giving up hope for next season – and I think there is a significant chance Deron Williams resigns with us…but I just don’t see the Magic moving the guy. They are that delusional and Dwight hasn’t helped by caring what his fans think of him.
As for Nene, yea it sucks. It puts us in a precarious season this season and it means are long-term strategy is built around a lot of high-risk, high-reward type scenarios. That said, I was never super big on a max contract to him anyway – I would hate to end up in the worst case scenario of rebuilding (again), but I think not signing him will turn out for the better over the long run.
I would encourage the following from all of you: You can maintain a positive attitude, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t critically approach these issues.
You sound reasonable but ..
No one has any idea until its all over. He does his best and we hope for the best. Until then, it’s just people giving their uninformed opinions.

Look guys I know Nene is a good player and all but the worst thing you can do in the NBA is sign average guys to absurd contracts.
There’s no way in hell guys like Nene and Chandler are worth 15m a year THAT IS INSANE.
We keep our cap space wait for the trade market, than we make our big move.
Ask Detroit if they’re happy overpaying Gordon and Charlie V (add Tayshun Prince now).
Ask Philly if they’re glad they’re paying Brand a good chunk of their cap space.
Ask Orlando and the Cavs if overpaying solid guys helped them satisfy Lebron and Dwight.
Kevin Martin is a good 1st target.
Dwight or Bust?
I think this season is a bust. Maybe even on purpose. If we’re “all in” for Dwight why not throw a whole season away, get a good draft pick and put Dwight and DWill together in free agency? If that is the case it’s a huge, absolutely huge risk.

Dwight or bust, then if the Magic were not going to trade him by the end of the week, the Nets would move on to Nene. Nene goes back to Denver
Same hour we hear the Lakers focusing efforts back on CP3???
Dwight has told them either he will remain in Orlando or he wants one team and one team only.

may not be but for the Lakers to
be focusing attention back on Paul and we know how messed up that has been.
For them to be even considering to go through that again it means they have learn something. Howard is either staying in Orlando, a trade is done and will be completed tomorrow or he told them it’s only the nets

why would the Lakers go back and deal with Stern. Look what the clippers are going through and what they went through before. Either way it’s likely the Lakers are out of it.

Golden State: Luck out and get a disgruntled point guard with all-star capability plus 6th man of the year in the 2nd round because he hurt his ankle in pre-draft workouts along with dumping all your trash for solid role players who tore up the palace at auburn hills
sacramento: landing a disgruntled yet beastly power forward who’s new profound thug image clashes with the owners new image cleansing, plus being able to trade your reckless point guard for a dead-eye shooting beast who refused to play in Canada and landing one of the best foreign shooters ever
Clippers: still confused how they make the playoffs and how they were able to have Bob Mcadoo, Bill Walton, Danny Manning, Shaun Livingston, Elton Brand, and Blake Griffin and watch them all suffer brutal injuries while with the team(save for Mac i dont think he got dinged up). I think they also had Moses Malone for one day(literally one day)

Two ways to look at things
1) Orlando agrees to trade us Dwight, and so we don’t have enough money for Nene, so he signs with Denver. Meanwhile, the Lakers shift their focus to CP3.
2) Orlando says they’re not trading Dwight, Nene only wanted to be here because of Dwight, so he signs with Denver. Meanwhile, Lakers shift their focus on CP3 because Orlando isn’t trading Dwight.
Which do you think?
Or maybe Nene got tired of waiting around
For Dwight drama to end?
What about CP3
We have nothing to do with CP3. The Rockets deal for Pau has been dead but Rockets still had an offer up.
I think Denver wasn't willing to give him that much of a money and now they are,
and Nene has been all is career in Denver so he obviously like the place.

Don't fit well.
Brook can’t guard the perimeter and Dwight’s defensive impact is severely mitigated if you move him outside.
Also don’t think they fit that well offensively. Just not a good combo, in my opinion.
Alright.
To be fair though, Ryan Anderson was paired with Dwight last year and he worked very well with him.
His game is similar to Brook’s. Nice to hear your thoughts though. It’s amazing that we can even have this discussion haha.

"When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?" - Dan Gilbert
I disagree.
I don’t see Ryan Anderson similar to Lopez at all.
Explain that for me, if you would.
I guess it was just my assumption from the few times I've seen him play with Dwight.
It really didn’t have anything to do with statistics.
He takes a lot of perimeter jumpers, no? I’m probably wrong. I was too excited to look it up. Ha.

"When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?" - Dan Gilbert
I mean, yeah.
Ryan Anderson is a pick-n-pop four who has the quickness to guard other fours. He’s more comfortable on the perimeter than Lopez.
Lopez has drifted to the perimeter, but that’s not where he’s really supposed to be (or most effective).
Eh. It wouldn't be horrible.
I see your point though.

Can't think of anyone.
Maybe a three-team trade for Gay where the Nets get a decent four back as well.
I really think Lopez is gonna boost his value, this season.
VC4Prez, you around? You’re better at orchestrating potential trades than I am.
Yo.. lol
So we’re talking about flipping Lopez for a wing if Dwight was coming here via FA?
by vincecarter4pres on Dec 13, 2011 11:59 PM EST up reply actions
Yes.
Presumably, a multi-team trade where the Nets are getting adequate value.
After this season, I don’t feel that a Lopez for Gay swap will be equal. Plus, the Grizzles don’t need a center.
See what you can cook up.
I had said before, if Dwight is going to make it to FA, there is a good chance we'll trade Brook for a stud on rookie deal through 2012-13 as an 11th hour deal.
To open up more cap and bring in a wing.
Maybe a 3 team deal where we get Paul George and Patrick Patterson.
DeMar DeRozan.
Outside shot of Harden.
Derrick Williams on Minny.
Evan Turner and something else.
by vincecarter4pres on Dec 14, 2011 12:31 AM EST up reply actions
yeah RA shot what 41% from 3 last year?
Brook is not the same mold, RA is a shooter and he’ll make quick drives or pass. Lopez likes to faceup and take his man off the dribble or back them down
also I would love to see RA at the 5 against Brook. remember when Dwight kept getting suspended for technicals and elbows and RA was dropping like 30/20 games as a center?

Honestly guys...
I don’t think BK lets Nene walk unless he is pretty sure he can grab Dwight. Thing is, if he signed Nene, all we lose is the ability to absorb Turk… which no other team can do, unless the Lakers part with Gasol AND Bynum, in which case.. they had the better offer anyway.
you are the king of denial
HOW DO YOU KNOW BILLY “LET” NENE WALK? EVER THINK NENE WENT ELSEWHERE?
With Nene and Dwight sharing an agent
And a lucrative deal from the Nets on the table, this thing reeks of “Dwight’s coming.”
There is NO WAY Billy & Fegan let Nene take the Denver deal without their approval.
That’s the only logical thing I can think. I doubt we’d just give up or that Fagan would put a gun to our heads and say "choose now because my client won’t wait anymore!!! (even though I’m the one making him wait.) "

So … either the Nets trade for him during the season or they sign him in the summer. That is, assuming that the Magic don’t turn around and trade him to the Lakers.

So basically we are rejoicing that we are going to suck all year? And hope that the Magic change their minds (based on reporting) that Bynum is a better grab than Lopez?

an article
The Denver Nuggets re-signed forward/center Nenê to a five-year contract worth $67 million, according to multiple reports Tuesday night, with ESPN’s Marc Stein (by my unofficial observation) tweeting the news first. The burly Brazilianear had a four-year, $64 million offer from the New Jersey Nets, but chose to stay with the one NBA team he’s ever known over the chance to anchor a front line with Brook Lopez when the Nets move to Brooklyn before the next season.

64M for 4 years or 67M for 5 years.
I would take $64M for 4 and hope for another contract
What was not guaranteed with out the Nets offer
The only thing guaranteed to Nene in the Nuggs offer was that he was guaranteed to get paid $2.5 million less per year than with the Nets.

Nene isn't even that good
Signing him basically says we can’t trade for Dwight till atleast March….I said it up top Nene 14.5 PPG and 7.6 RPG vs Hump 14.8 PPG and 13.5 RPG w D-Will….and he’ll come 3x cheaper.
Nene puts us into a 7th seed?
With Hump we get 8th….
With Dwight…3rd
Nene isn’t that good. Get over it. D-Will said himself that there is no one in this free-agency that can make the Nets a championship caliber team
yeah but if we dont get dwight we are totally moisoed at this point
nene was a backup plan
There's other guys out there
We do have 2 first round picks….that could EASILY get you a good power forward
I still like our chances
Everybody needs to strap in tho, cuz this season is definitely going to be a rollercoast and may even be tough to deal with, in terms of the talent on the court as we stay in position for dwight
the worse we do, the more our draft pick is worth later ;)
also imagine we are mediocre BUT end up with dwight in free agency.
So Deron, Dwight, STILL have Brook, could keep him or trade him in a josh smith package or something and have 2 1st round picks in a good draft, including a not awful one cuz we were mediocre on the court.
that’s a dream scenario

2010-2011 = acquire an All-Star via cap space as Thorn himself said
2011-2012 = make the playoffs without hindering future flexibility
2012 off-season = sign the second All-Star
2012-2013 = make a run for the championship
Mission accomplished thus far.

honestly i think that some of us on here have more bball iq in management than our front office. All i know is if we dont get Dwight its over. We signed 3 dleaguers and a bum…out of all the FA you couldnt get a decent SF? are you kidding me?? Even with Dwight we still need a 3 and 4. Honestly Nene was the perfect fit for this team at the 4… i don’t know what to say really. Hopefully something good happens, but who knows
There are still some SFs available
AK, J.Howard, maybe Afflalo? Kinda small but…I’d do it instead of putting outlaw there.

this is how i predict the team to look like
Deron Williams/farma/gaines
Maroow/marshon
Hedo/maybe RJ/james
humphries/jordan williams
Howard/williams
that right there is a conteder in my eyes
Ya'll are ON CRACK if you think Nene is going to take $13.5m/yr
to play for a perrenial 8th seed with no discernible star, leader, or direction while he has a $16m/yr deal on his desk from the Nets (with Deron Williams, Brook Lopez, and the richest owner in the sport)
He would be an idiot to take anything less than $15.5/yr from the Nuggets (hometown discount).
Why? Because his wife is from Denver? Big whoop. I’m sure she won’t have no gripe moving (if necessary) for a few years. It’s not like Denver is going anyway any time soon.

A Western club re-signing its top frontcourt player, oddly enough, has bearing on the Orlando Magic’s goal of doing the same when Dwight Howard hits free agency next summer. Had Nenê chosen New Jersey, it would have limited its long-term salary outlook, complicating its pursuit of Howard.

Man. Listen to what he is preparing them for.
Instead, the Nets’ salary cap is mostly clear for 2012-13, making a run at Howard possible and giving them some leverage; if the Nets stay far enough below the cap, it can afford to sign Howard outright as a free agent. And if Howard makes clear the only team with which he’ll play is Brooklyn—as Carmelo Anthony did with the New York Knicks last season—he and the Nets can effectively force Orlando to trade him there or risk losing him for nothing come summer.
Again, that outcome is contingent on the Nets being fiscally responsible and Howard ruling out Orlando, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Los Angeles Lakers, which are reportedly the other teams to which he’s considering committing long-term.

I'm bout to go to sleep
but I have to say this. Seeing what I saw today makes me believe that Dwight will be a Nets. Not only that but he prefers the Nets.
So I was wrong on both accounts.
Now if this was just nene I would have said okay maybe he got tried of waiting and said screw it. Maybe he just wanted to go back home to Denver. Then again he said he wanted to go to a contender and win. He just assured himself he will never see a ring in that uniform. When I heard the Lakers are talking back to get CP3.
That is the act of desperation. Why would anyone go through that. We seen and heard how frustrating the process been. The Lakers dropped out of it because of that and after a couple days they go back? Something changed. Similar to how we heard the Knicks were interested in only short term deals and then it was rumor the Lakers are trying to get CP3 and then the same day the trade goes down. Tyson gets an offer from Golden State to only have it outbid by the Knicks?
Again I was wrong. Everything I seen today points to Dwight being a Net

They’re a team I can see involved in a multi-team deal for Dwight. They might be willing to take on guys like Petro, Farmar or even Turk for a price. Would Orlando value a guy like Cousins more than Lopez? I’m sure Sacramento would do Cousins plus for Lopez, if only to unload the headache & add some experience.

I especially liked the part where Petro was included in the deal
As if..
Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
Petro will be on the move, much like his hairline.

Petro has a higher PER than OutLOL
Wow. Just wow.

Adam Morrison got his team multiple championships barely trying, if that's not a great player...I don't know who is.
alright...guess I should take it down for the night. not expecting any news overnight or tomorrow regarding the Nets
maybe on the CP3 front we will..but nothing with the Nets
I expect Outlaw to be amnesty’d tomorrow. It’s time for some damage control.

Which only makes the Nets sign more players to get to the floor
Outlaw is going to be on the Nets this year
by No Sleep Till Brooklyn on Dec 14, 2011 12:05 AM EST up reply actions
Noooooo
Outlaw’s contract still counts towards the floor if we amnesty him
Incorrect
His number would not count against the cap
That is the point of amnesty
by No Sleep Till Brooklyn on Dec 14, 2011 12:07 AM EST up reply actions
Wouldn't count against the cap
But would count against the floor if we are under it. We wouldn’t need to sign anyone to meet the minimal threshold.
His money is going to count towards the floor whether they amnesty him or not.
Oh pissing blimey there's jam coming out of the walls!
Outlaw would count against the floor. He would be invisible (but there) like wonder woman’s plane

It would really suck
If we amnesty Outlaw and he goes back to Portland and is Mr. 4th quarter again. Who knows man….maybe coaching is the problem. Had ANYONE improved under Avery last year? Hump got playing time for first time in his life, so he doesn’t count.

I say
We all find newspaper clippings from Orlando-area papers in the summer of 96 when Shaq left and mail them to Otis.
Thousands upon thousands.
From a commenter on the the Orlando blog
I think their chances are great
It is pretty apparent Dwight wants to play with Deron, and we will not have the ability to sign him. None of the players on Dwight’s wish list besides Davis are readily attainable with the Magic’s assets. We need a hail mary to get Josh Smith or Iggy, or Dwight to realize this is a good team that can be great with his help.
My biggest consolation was the report that Dwight wanted to recruit Billups to the Magic, you generally don’t want to improve a team if you want to be traded soon after.

Based on
What Otis said today, I think this will play out all the way to the trade deadline. And it will be excruciating

I'm sure this has been asked but do we have to amnesty Outlaw before the season to take back Hedo with Dwight?

We just need the Lakers to get CP3 and Brook to improve from last year. Worth the wait.

But the Nets have been exploring ways to bring in a third or even fourth team that could convey more assets to Orlando, and New Jersey GM Billy King has signaled to associates that such a maneuver won’t be a problem. King has proved to be one of the most adept executives in the league at assembling complicated, multi-team deals.

Billy King has been like a ninja
So many things today point to Dwight being a Net. (hopefully before the season)
Besides the obvious trade request and the Nets being on the top of his list.
The Lakers were going for Dwight again after the trade for CP3 fell through. Now they are back after Paul. It’s obvious they can’t get both. They know they can’t get Dwight.
Nene signs with Nuggets after waiting all this time. Same agent as Dwight. He knew what was going on. Now he signs for an extra year with Nuggs and only getting 3 million more. He could have made that 3 million back and more by getting another contract at age 33. Not to mention putting the extra 3 million a year to work he was getting from NJ.
It’s going to happen. But it could be ugly watching this team if it doesn’t happen soon.
It wasn't that I was in love with Nene, but, it would have been nice to have a three big man rotation of Brook, Nene and Hump.
I was saying at the end of last year, that Hump was putting up better numbers than Nene, but, lets see if he can continue that trend.
LETS GO NETS!
If we signed Nene we were never signing Hump.
Or ANY contract past this season.

…how many reporters (and non-Net fans) will spin it that the Nets were “Lucky” that the Lakers got back in the Chris Paul trade talk otherwise we wouldn’t have him.

why wouldn’t you just make you-know-who a Net?

you think they'd take outlaw and morrow for wallace?
if anyone takes outlaw it would be portland they love him there.
Well
Billy has rolled the dice. We’re all in now. At least we’ve eliminated the possibility of overpaying for someone. We’re either going to hit it big, or we’re about to lose our shirts.

Don’t crap out.
Over the last ten days the Nets have acquired
All the Street Cred they will need. All indicators pointing up!!!
Well if the proposed trade is going to work gotta amnesty Outlaw

If BK pulls this off
You guys wanna get a giant thank you card (I mean giant), sign it all, and send it to his office?
waiting till the weekend.
then I will panic.

Let's panic together
I’m in
1 - D. Williams / J. Farmar / S. Gaines
2 - A. Morrow / S. Graham / M. Brooks
3 - T. Outlaw / D.James
4 - K. Humpries / J. Williams / S. Williams
5 - B. Lopez / J. Petro
Waiting until league offices close for the holiday before Jan. 1st deadline for Dwight's Bird Rights transfer eligibility to expire.
Then I panic a little. Not even full on panic.

Dwight or Bust!
Get Dwight, D-Will resigns and other players want to play in Brooklyn (Brooklyn will be amazing-hardcore fans-been dying for a team since Dodgers left).
Don’t get Dwight and the nets lose D-Will and become completely irrelevant and are a bottom teir team for many, many years to come in a brand new billion dollar arena in Brooklyn.
Pick 1…because it’s simply one or the other. This will either be a huge celebration or a funeral.
With the recent history of the Nets, it seems like they just can’t get right and I’d be shocked if things work out for them. I can tell you about 10 things that didn’t go their way in the past 2 years!

OH CRAP!
I wanted NENE because we wouldn’t have to give up our future to get him. NOW we have to give up everything, including THE NETS DANCERS to get Dwight. My only hope, is that someone will also take Stephen Graham from us as part of the deal….
