Mavs Clear More Cap Space For 2012
The Dallas Mavericks made a relatively minor trade on Tuesday, sending Rudy Fernandez and Corey Brewer to Denver. The deal doesn't affect the Nuggets' ability to re-sign Nene, but it does give the Mavs about $3 million more of cap space in 2012, when they aim to sign a big free agent, like Deron Williams.
"Mavs lining up their ducks to be major player in 2012 free agency. Will be in play for both DWill and D12," tweets David Aldridge. "Mavericks are clearly going all in for Deron Williams and the summer of 2012," adds Chris Mannix.
If Dallas were to waive Lamar Odom and use the amnesty clause on Shawn Marion or Brendan Haywood next summer, they'd have about $22 million in cap space. They'd have to trade Marion or Haywood to come close to having enough space to add two max free agents next to Dirk Nowitzki.

Okay.
New plan: Don’t sign Nene. Don’t sign any large contracts that last past this season.
The Nets need to have cap-space in the summer of 2012 if another viable option (for these top-tier free agents) will have it.
One-year deals and expirings.

Completely the opposite of what they should do.
Specifically, if there’s another team — which happens to be in Williams’ home state — that will be able to sign him in the off-season.
Why does home state matter so much?
Paul Pierce returned home to beat the Lakers in the 2008 finals, against the team he grew up idolizing. Do you think he cared when he was hoisting the trophy?
If Portland and New Jersey offered you, Chakroot, identical contracts and they were both equal in opportunity, who would you be more inclined to sign with?

Just because he grew up in Texas, it doesn’t guarantee that deron will eventually play for the mavericks.
That was just a hypothetical to show that hometown does matter.

who the hell would the Mavs have to interest Dwill/D12?
If it came down to it we’d have at least Morrow, Brooks. Lopez and maybe even Nene. Add that to the fact that we move to Brooklyn in a brand new arena along with the fact that Deron more or less has ALREADY settled down here with his wife and children and could have more money by staying here PLUS the fact that D12 has expressed interest in signing an extension with the Nets makes it a no-brainer in my eyes

So...did everyone forget about this?
I saw it while looking for that Fanpost by Dopeness. It was in one of his other fanposts.
Look at what Otis said after ORL was eliminated.
“We’re not trading him,” Smith told ESPN.com on Thursday regarding Howard. “You can print it wherever you want it, but it ain’t ever going to bed until he signs a contract extension or signs somewhere else.”
Smith said Howard has never given the Magic any indication that he wants to be anywhere other than Orlando. Because of that, Smith said, there is no circumstance under which he would consider entertaining trade offers that are certain to come this summer and leading up to next year’s trade deadline.
http://www.netsdaily.com/2011/5/1/2147102/otis-smiths-proclamation-is-bad-news-for-the-nets-or-is-it

OK for the arguments sake let's assume they dump everyone except Dirk (they'd need to dump Marion, Jones and Beaubois, amnesty Haywood)
Dirk 20.9
TWELVE cap holds to meet the 13 player roster minimum- 5.6
Odom’s partial guarantee- 2.4
total = 28.9M
cap = 58M/ 29.1M in cap space
max for DWill would start at 17.4
max for Dwight would start at 19
cap space required to sign both to max deals = 36.4
Sooooooooo even if they dumped EVERYONE but Dirk, they would not be close to signing 2 maxes. SImple math. This is a fact. Even in BCS for Dallas they would not have enough… not close.

I also fall back on the fact that the Nets will be able to offer Deron 5 years with 7.5% raises vs. Dallas going INTO Brooklyn…as long as BK doesn’t totally mess this whole thing up…Nets will be in prime position around the deadline and also in the summer of 2012.
If it’s clear that Orlando is not budging by Friday…sign Nene and 1 year contracts to fill out the roster. Amnesty Outlaw so the Nets have additional flexibility mid-season.

Nice to know you DWill & D-12
Ouch! Homecooking for Dwill. Billy King must be shaking. If no DHoward bye-bye Dwill. They have trade exceptions and other pieces to do sign and trades. They will make it happen if we don’t step up. I think the next few weeks will determine our fate. These two are as big as Lebron and DWade so unless we put something awesome together I doubt we can stop DWill from going home.
FWIW, here are some interesting answers from Eric Pincus of Hoopsworld.
He is a Clippers and Lakers reporter and he is followed by Marc Stein, Larry Coon, and David Aldridge.
Nathan
From you’re perspective, what are realistic trade scenarios that don’t include L.A. Shipping both Gasol & Bynum and receiving Turkoglu?
Eric Pincus
If the Magic want to trade Howard and feel Bynum is a worthy centerpiece, then maybe something develops (regardless of the minute details). At this point that’s not the case, given they hope to keep Dwight.
Raph
With the Nets moving on to "Plan B, C and D" after this week, will the Lakers push harder to make a trade for Dwight or will they sit back and wait for the Magic to come to them if things don’t go as planned in the season? Will Dwight be traded before XMas?
Eric Pincus
Nah, I don’t think Dwight is traded before Christmas
Zico, India
hi eric! please…do you think the lakers can get DH12 without giving up gasol??? and what smaller moves can they pull off?
Eric Pincus
I Howard does go on the block in earnest, I don’t believe Gasol would go out.
Tony Sandoval
Eric,
Don’t you think Howard is just saying that because management told him to say that? Unless he’s going John Kerry on us and flip flopping. Bottom line the Magic have no tradeable assets to get an impact player that will convince Howard to stay. I just don’t buy it.
Eric Pincus
Howard is saying that – not the team. And until he puts a stronger foot out the door, he won’t leave.
Eddie K.
I’ve heard that January 1st is a big day for Dwight Howard, in that he needs to sign his extension by then in order to lock in 7.5% raises under the new CBA. True or False, the "Dwight Howard Watch" ends by then?
Eric Pincus
Not exactly. I don’t believe any of these guys sign extensions. They have more to gain in opting out and then re-signing. The power of extensions for guys like Howard/Paul?Williams = greatly diminished.
MarShon Brooks has the dreaded.
"When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?" - Dan Gilbert
This guy is a complete fool
The answer to the last question is incorrect. Howard can opt out at the end of the season and lock in a 5 year Bird max deal, unless he is traded after Jan 1. If he is traded after Jan 1, that team can only offer him a 4 year non-Bird deal.

Ive posted this a couple of times because I think we are getting Howard. This news by Dallas gives us more leverage. Otis is trying to get us to waste our cap space. Dallas helps us in that they will be very competive this year while having the money to sign Howard next year. Lucky for us that there player dont hold much trade value. Otis is going to cave in soon or get stuck with Turk and no Howard
The 2 teams accused of tampering were NJ and Hou. What’s the connection you ask?
The Nets own the Rockets 1st round pick but it is lottery protected.
Howards agent, Fegan, is also Nene’s agent and has been rumored to be a target of Houston. Fegan probably promised the Rockets he would secure them Nene if they took off the lotto protection on their pick the Nets own.
Why would Fegan want that. It would make the Houston draft pick more attractive for a potential Howard to the Nets trade. He would get Howard to NJ to play with Williams and Nene would get his big contract. Everyone wins.
Dont be surprised if the deal is something like this
Orlando gets
-Lopez
-Kevin Martin (Fegan’s Client)
- Nets 2012 1st round pick
-Houston’s unprotected 2012 1st round pick
Houston gets
-Nene(Fegan’s Client)
Denver gets

-Turk

It's very possible that the Rockets
are willing to dump Martin. He’s 1 dimensional, on a big contract, and gets injured a lot. If they can flip him for someone like Nene, I think they would
just so people don't forget about this
One source close to Williams, for example, says it’s unlikely that the New Jersey Nets’ point guard would consider signing with the Mavericks unless he was joining both Nowitzki and Chandler.
And if he was joining Howard?...
Cuban obviously has a plan here.

Yes they can, if they take a pay cut, they could make a scary team in Dallas...
Dallas can waive Odom next year, they already opened some more space trading Rudy and Brewer and can amnesty Marion or Haywood, they can have about 25M in cap space… this is what is really scaring me right now, I believe they will be willing to take that pay cut to along side Dirk, that would be the best team in the league, you can’t make a better combo of Big Mens than Dirk-D12…
Even if they don’t take the paycut if we don’t put together a good team this year, we may lose DWill for the Mavs.

Options
D-Will/D12 and CP3 are all going to consider their options after this season and that includes ANY team that can sign two of them. Especially a team with a proven track record like Dallas.
It seems that Deron is open to discussing things with King and vice versa. My guess is the Nets won’t do anything that dramatically reduces cap space unless D-Will signs off.
Now that was the same scenario that buried Cleveland and LBJ but in reverse (in that D-Will might actually bolt to play closer to home).
Remember at this point it’s not about team loyalty.. It’s about the players finding a place to join forces.. Seems like Dallas, LA and NJ are options but i wouldn’t place one above the other just yet.
It’s the NBA and these cats clearly don’t care..

This will all work out this week. Otis seems crazy now, but to become a GM of a pro franchise, you need to be somewhat intelligent. He has to understand that Dwight isn’t gonna stay, and that Orlando is now rebuilding.
Orlando will suck this season after the trade. That means they’ll end up with a decent draft pick. To rebuild successfully and quickly, they’ll need 3 things: picks, youth, and cap space. The Nets are the ONLY team that can offer that. Lopez plus 2 first rounders plus taking back Hedo is seriously the best option Orlando has at this point. You won’t beat the Heat or the Knicks by adding Gasol and Bynum, or any of the pieces Dallas would send them. It’s just that simple.
Whether it happens this week or at the deadline, Otis has no better option than to trade Dwight to NJ. He might wait until the deadline so the Nets picks are more valuable, but what else is he really gonna do? If he takes a package from LA or Dallas, he’s just being spiteful; those deals will not be the best option for his franchise. We can’t help if he’s crazy, but it’s safe to assume that he’s a reasonably smart guy.
Sit tight, Nets fans. Good things are on the horizon. 2 first rounders, plus Orlando’s own first rounder, plus Lopez, plus cap relief, plus whatever else a 3rdgame team will throw in is just too good to pass up. We’re gonna make it to the promised land, just trust BK…

Turned out Outlaw was their prize.
I do agree with the Mavs approach, nevertheless.
Staying competitive while freeing up cap space for 2012. That’s what I’ve wanted the Nets to do. Put together a playoff team while retaining cap space for next summer so we have leverage. Heat did it with Wade coming up on f.a. and now the Mavs doing it too. I guess it’s easier to do when you already have a winning team in place.

They lost soooo many key guys
I would have to disagree with you on that. Chandler was the difference between 1st round exits and last season’s championship, he’s gone.
Barea’s energy and penetration off the bench, gone
Butler – gone
Stevenson- gone
Kidd – 1 yr older
Brendan Haywood is a starting caliber center. Tyson wasn't the only reason they won.
Barea can be replaced by Beaubois without a problem.
Butler didn’t even play in the playoffs, and besides, they added Odom for nothing.
They lost Stevenson but gained Carter.
Tyson’s departure is going to hurt, but they’re fine right now and maybe they can still go after Dalembert.
Also, look at how weak their competition is in the West. The Spurs, Lakers, Nuggets, Hornets, and Blazers are all worse.

No way
If the Nets don’t land D12 this week, they’ll end up with Nene, who will be very tradeable. The Mavs clearing cap space actually helps the Nets’ leverage b/c it puts pressure on Orlando knowing that the Mavs are waiting with cap space.
healthy bigs are always tradeable, epecially ones that can score
last off-season, the Mavs picked up Chandler for a non-guaranteed contract
Well, he is and he isn't.
There are a number of other teams that want to give him the identical or nearly identical contract.
The problem is, how many of those teams just ahppen to have pure unadulterated 2012 cap they will trade for him next offseason if we need it?
by vincecarter4pres on Dec 13, 2011 9:03 PM EST up reply actions
this is correct...
Remember, many teams did NOT use amnesty yet so there will be a chunk of cap space coming off team’s books next summer.
Nene will have 3 years remaining on his contract. May or may not be tradeable.
If I had to choose my fantasy for summer of 2012 (Dwight opts out), I would rather have Brook (+ extra few mil in space) + Deron + Howard rather than Nene + Deron + Howard next summer.
by BKNfastbreak on Dec 13, 2011 9:15 PM EST up reply actions
Didn't the Mavs just pick up both those players?
WTF? They just traded picks for Fernandez and then, without him even suiting up for a single game, trade him AGAIN?
Nets just signed S.Williams to a one year deal may have the same plan.
Can’t quite figure this out.
Nets sign Nene and nobody but one year deals.
2012 Free Agency cap 58 Million
Dwill hold will be around 17.5 million
Nene gets extension after this season lowering his 2012 and spreading it over the length of his contract while adding a year. 15 million or he gets traded to Atlanta for 13.
Outlaw finally gets amnestied.
Morrow makes 4 million but may have to get traded
Farmer opts out
Gaines and Graham come off the books
James, Brooks and Williams are all on reasonable rookie contracts
they still have two first round picks who have slight holds
and they would have around 7 million dollar hold on Brook
The Nets would be under the cap with a one year 3 million dollar Petro deal the only bad contract (which would easily be dealt for money and 2nd rounder)
The Nets could pick and choose trade partners but would have no problems finding the room.
Who would you pick if you were Dwight?
2011 team still
Williams Farmar Gaines
Morrow Brooks
Outlaw James
Nene Williams
Lopez Williams Petro
and whatever other one year deals.
Not bad plan B
I don't get it
Why does everyone expect Famar to opt out? When do players, who aren’t all-stars, opt out?
when they are still young and only have one year left
when they want to start and are behind an all world point guard
and when they have already stated that they will opt out
Even if he didn’t he would be easy to trade
2012 Lineup
Williams/ K. Marshall (drafted)
Brooks/Bogdonovic
Kirelenko (vet min)/ James
Nene/ McAdoo (drafted)
Howard/ vet min/
Any plan that includes Outlaw playing for us
is a bad plan

I like the above outlook! Lets get Nene, keep Brook/picks and sign Dwight when he can walk!
That would be the best case for the us! The question comes back to, would Howard be williing to take a less to sign with this team out right? That would be a very good team!
LETS GO NETS!
Open practice / Selling Tickets / X-Mas game ....you guys thing he will be traded before X-Mas.
As per tweet below, I don’t think we getting any news tonight …you think it’s safe to x my browser for tonight, or NOT.

#Magic will hold free, open practice Saturday. @AmwayCenter doors to open at 10 a.m. A scrimmage will begin at 11 a.m., team official said
See Ya!!!!!
If the Nets do not get D12 and retain D-Will, the new BK Arena will look like Citifield.
Nice Michael Kay quote
And good luck with all that money and no PG hahah

Hate to say I told you so, NI
But Dallas is and has been a threat for Deron williams. Luckily I go to Dallas about once a month to see him or dwight.
by Jack Handy Jr on Dec 13, 2011 9:07 PM EST via mobile reply actions
if he wants to go home, he will,
But how is a team with basically just older dirk and deron better than a team of deron, pre-brook, and nene?
by vijay311 on Dec 13, 2011 9:12 PM EST via iPhone app reply actions
Signing Nene and keeping an eye on the cap space for 2012
to make sure we have enough to offer dwight a max (if it comes to that)
would make this offseason full of win
dont get into any other LT deals beyond Nene plz
keep the faith nets nation
in a year we’ll either be building a statue of billy king or sharpening pitchforks
4M offer to williams per isola

If Jamal decides to sign with Knicks look for Shawne Williams to sign with Nets (4 mil) or Warriors
2 minutes ago
ya, its a lot
but as long as its 1-year, then who cares
i’d imagine that’s why its such a healthy bid
has to be 1 year deal...
Would Shawne take a 1 year $4 mil over a 2 year $2.5 mil offer from Knicks if it came down to it?
by BKNfastbreak on Dec 13, 2011 9:22 PM EST up reply actions
One year deal?
Brilliant if so.
He’s a guy probably looking for 2 or 3 years at about 2.5 to 3 million dollars per.
He might not be finding what he wants, but there are probably a few teams willing to give him that mini-mini-MLE for 2.5 a year for 2 years.
One year at $4 mill is a great compromise for him and works perfectly for us.
by vincecarter4pres on Dec 13, 2011 9:22 PM EST up reply actions
give him a 1 or 2 year deal

NO to 2 year deal...
If Nets amnesty Outlaw, and sign Nene to a $16 mil contract. They would still have 7 mil to sign players on 1 year contracts. $4 mil to Shawne, then $3 mil more to finish the roster. And if they wanted $2.5 mini.
Expiring contracts will have value around the deadline, and Nets would maintain cap space potential for next summer.
by BKNfastbreak on Dec 13, 2011 9:28 PM EST up reply actions
whether its one or two it shouldnt matter
as long as the total is 4 million over the life of the deal and there is some type of partial guarantee/team option involved

They completely ignored Dwight's trade request to the nets
Or has that been proven untrue in recent days?
no one knows anything really
they could be not talking at all or knee deep in it
all we know is what’s said publicly, which has changed by the minute and likely all been posturing instead of reality
alright this is just annoying
we’re analyzing and speculating ourselves crazy. this site is full of Chicken Littles. We need a signing or confirmation of a strategy so we don’t all go insane. Really, nothing has changed since the weekend, but reading posts here you would make you think we should trade D-Will immediately.
I’m done here until something actually happens, idle hands is NetsDaily’s undoing.
I still don't think Dallas is a real threat to land D-Will
At the very least, the Nets will have Lopez and Nene locked up. D-Will could play with a very young Brook Lopez and still young Nene and make max money, or play for less to play with a 34yr old Dirk, that IF the Mavs can even clear enough cap room.
but they're gonna get Howard too!
even if the math says that’s impossible!
by sheepareevil on Dec 13, 2011 9:19 PM EST up reply actions
If the Nets get Dwight, which i believe they will, then you are SCREWED Mark Cuban. The Mavs are stupid because most likely the Nets will end up with Dwight and Deron and Dallas will be left with just Dirk.,
What makes you so sure we'll get Dwight?
Forget about Cuban. I’m more concerned about Dwight staying in Orlando more than anything. Otis Smith is determined not to trade him, even if that means letting him walk in free agency to screw Dwight out of millions of dollars.
These decisions that are slowly being made arent in our favor and they will all cause a domino effect which will ultimately leave us without Dwight or Deron. Billy King needs to make something happen soon.
Dwight will leave
I think he has his heart set on it. I could be wrong, but unless Orlando can manage to pull of a trade for Smith or Iggy, Dwight is going to walk. My biggest fear is the Lakers, a team that has assets(beat up center and more old garbage) and a place where Dwight would most likely sign long term if given a short stint in the area.
Can things get any worse?
Graham at PF, Mavs and Lakers clearing space, our prize acquisition is Mr. Parker, and Dwight having a soap opera moment
Feels good to be back
Why are you guys freaking out? Because we havent signed overpaid SCRUBS?
We are still on the Dwight hunt and have set a deadline/
Nene is waiting for us
Hump will come back cheap
and we’ll probably sign another wing like S williams or AK47
Dwill has said many times he wants to stay here and win in BK, loves the organization, etc
Why are you impatient?
BK got this.

I appreciate your positive attitude
BUT…. those scrubs are better than every player on our team with the exception of Deron and Brook. lol
Nene has never said he is waiting for us…. we haven’t signed him yet and until that happens leave him out of the future equation.
Hump will come back, hopefully. But that still gives us the same team we had last year.
AK47 is asking for 8mil a year.
Dwill is saying the right things because he has faith in Billy King bringing in top talent. That hasn’t happened yet.
Those are the reasons why everyone is impatient and panicing. This is a repeat of last offseason and it’s looking to be a trend for the Nets. We all want that trend to end, we want the Nets to be a key player like EVERY OTHER TEAM not named the Raptors or Warriors.
I hope BK got this. lol
This is interesting
First, Dwight demands a trade to NJ.
Later, NJ sets deadline for a deal at the same time Dwight leaves open the possibility of him staying (shortly after explicitly saying he wanted out of Orlando).
I think this is all a plan. NJ signs Nene, Dwight plays through till the deadline and then makes it clear: NJ or nothing. Then, Otis, who initially hesitated, is forced to take just Brook and a pick for Dwight, with no Hedo. We win in every way possible.
IMO, this is all set up between the Nets and Dwight
if dirk, dwight, and deron is then so is nene dwight and deron

I think it depends more on the players around them then just the three. So it would be difficult to compare

No,
Nets would need to clear out a significant amount.
by BKNfastbreak on Dec 13, 2011 9:31 PM EST up reply actions
Nice theory
Dwight clearly does not want to be seen as the bad guy. But the Orlando front office controls the outcome. Dwight’s leaving, it’s obvious. Dwight’s lasting image is directly tied to the value orlando gets in return for him, if any
calling it now...
nene signing announced thursday afternoon. and i’m perfectly fine with that. big guy that can run the floor and jump out of the building? we add a SG or SF and we’re a decent team. not to mention exciting.
Vince Carter
Looks like VC’s deal is for 3 years, which also would get in the way of them making a run for both Howard and D-Will
Alvaro Martin: ESPN: #DallasMavericks sign #VinceCarter for $9.4 million over three seasons and sign #DelonteWest for the veteran’s minumum salary. about 16 minutes ago

I read he signed 3 for $3 Million deal
which is scrap money. A million a year? If he averages 10+ points, hes earning his paycheck lol
Feels good to be back
impossible, I think you read that wrong
the veteran’s minimum for Carter is much larger than $1mil
what i think is
magic told dwight..we`ll trade you. just wait till closer to the deadline and pretend you wanna be here. that way the magic can get more for him. since signed players cannot be traded till 30 days after the signing
Jersey Strong, Brooklyn Ready
Dont you guys think we should make a bid for Jamal Crawford
He’s looking for a one year deal so he can test free agency again next summer. I know he doesn’t shoot efficiently but he’d definitely be worth the 5 million that Portland and Kings are offering. Rather pay him that Shawnee Williams
by djeterfan on Dec 13, 2011 9:34 PM EST via mobile reply actions
so...
ESPN sources: Lakers continue to express serious interest in Paul, w/package built around Pau, but search for third team on to supply youth
The funny part is on the LAC one that should happen...
The league is basically asking LAC for the equivalent of us sending Brook Lopez, Derrick Favors and the 2011 pick for Chris Paul.
Crazy.
As for LAL, they’re still trying to get Paul and Dwight.
